IAU Commission 35 consists of members of the International Astronomical Union whose research is concerned with the structure and evolution of stars in all parts of the H-R diagram. Their interests range from various aspects of stellar interior physics, such as convection, diffusion, rotation, magnetic fields, to asteroseismology and the prediction of the evolutionary and nucleosynthetic histories of stars that are of vital importance for our understanding of stellar populations and galactic chemical evolution. This report presents some highlights that were published during the present triennia…
We present the first catalogue of known variable stars in open cluster regions and with up to two times the given cluster radius. This gives basic information about the distribution of variable stars in cluster fields for the complete sky. Knowledge of the variable star contents in open clusters is a significant advantage in their study. Analysing variability of cluster members and fields stars as well, allows us to study the characteristics of stars and clusters together. This catalogue of variable stars in open cluster fields is the first step in supporting such studies. We took all variable…
We present results of a UBVIc variability survey in the young open cluster NGC 2244. In total, we found 245 variable stars. Most of them, 211 stars, are variables with irregular variations. Furthermore, 23 periodic variables were found. We also detected four candidates for delta Scuti stars and 7 eclipsing binaries. Based on the mid-infrared Spitzer and WISE photometry and near infrared JHKs 2MASS photometry we classified 104 young stellar sources among our variables: 1 Class I object, 1 Class I/flat spectrum object, 4 flat spectrum objects, 91 Class II objects and 7 transition disk objects. T…
Nine new short period variable stars have been discovered in the direction of the open cluster Cr464 in Camelopardalis. The field was observed using Tzec Maun Observatory's telescope AP180. Two new variable stars were classified as pulsating stars (RRab and RRc types). The other seven stars are binary systems. One of them is of ELL-type, four binaries were recognized as EW-type, and two systems are rather short period EA-type binaries. All new variables were registered in the VSX catalogue.
The fifth part of the OGLE-III Catalog of Variable Stars presents 23 R CrB (RCB) stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). 17 of these objects have been spectroscopically confirmed by previous studies, while 6 stars are new candidates for RCB variables. We publish the VI multi-epoch OGLE photometry for all objects. We use the sample of carbon-rich long-period variables released in the previous part of this catalog to select objects with severe drops in luminosity, i.e. with the DY-Per-like light curves. DY Per stars are often related to R CrB variables. We detect at least 600 candidates for D…

本研究利用TESS前67个扇区的2分钟采样数据发现72505颗周期性变星,通过随机森林方法基于19个参数将其分为12个亚型,其中87.0%为新分类变星,各类纯度表现不一,该成果助力银河系与恒星相关研究。
We present time series photometry in the field of Stock 8 and identified 130 short period variable stars. Twenty eight main-sequence and 23 pre-main-sequence variables are found to be part of cluster Stock 8. The main-sequence variables are classified as slow pulsator of the B type, $β$ Cep and $δ$ Scuti stars. Fourteen main-sequence stars could be new class variables as discussed by Mowlavi et al. (2013) and Lata et al. (2014). The age and mass of pre-main-sequence variables are found to be $\lesssim$ 5 Myr and in the mass range of 0.5 to 2.8 M$_{\odot}$, respectively. These pre-main-sequence…
A photometric study of variable stars in the field of old open cluster NGC 188 is discussed. Observations were carried out in two bands R and I for 5513 stars up to R = 17 mag in the field of 1.5 x 1.5 grad. around the cluster. The photometric data were processed by the console application "Astrokit", which corrects brightness variations associated with the variability of atmospheric transparency and carries out searching for variable stars. We found 18 new variable stars and determined the parameters of one previously known variable. Among discovered stars one is a low-amplitude pulsating var…
The studies of pulsating variable stars are traditional subjects of astronomers in Odessa. In the last half of the 20th century, the studies of the physical variable stars were the topics of 15 PhD theses of the collaborators of the Odessa State (now National) University. Continuing the tradition of studies of long-period variable stars in the Astronomical Observatory of Odessa University, we try to conduct a detailed classification of the Mira-type stars, semi-regular variable stars and also find out the location of symbiotic stars among other long-period variables in their evolution to the p…
The thirteenth part of the OGLE-III Catalog of Variable Stars (OIII-CVS) contains 19384 long-period variables (LPVs) detected in the Small Magellanic Cloud. The sample is composed of 352 Mira stars, 2222 semiregular variables (SRVs) and 16810 OGLE Small Amplitude Red Giants (OSARGs). Sources are divided into oxygen-rich and carbon-rich stars. The catalog includes time-series VI photometry obtained between 1997 and 2009. Methods used to select and classify variable stars are described. We show some statistical properties of the sample, and compare it with LPVs in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Add…
The number of known variable stars has increased by several magnitudes over the last decade, and automated classification routines are becoming increasingly important to cope with this development. Here we show that the "upside-down CBH variables", which were proposed as a potentially new class of variable stars by Heinze et al. (2018) in the ATLAS First Catalogue of Variable Stars, are, at least to a high percentage, made up of alpha2 Canum Venaticorum (ACV) variables - that is, photometrically variable magnetic chemically peculiar (CP2/He-peculiar) stars - with distinct double-wave light cur…
We present time series photometry of 57 variable stars in the cluster region NGC 7380. The association of these variable stars to the cluster NGC 7380 has been established on the basis of two colour diagrams and colour-magnitude diagrams. Seventeen stars are found to be main-sequence variables, which are mainly B type stars and are classified as slowly pulsating B stars, $β$ Cep or $δ$ Scuti stars. Some of them may belong to new class variables as discussed by Mowlavi et al. (2013) and Lata et al. (2014). Present sample also contains 14 pre-main-sequence stars, whose ages and masses are found …
We identify the RR Lyrae and delta Scuti (DSCT) stars in three catalogs of GALEX variable sources. The NUV amplitude of RR Lyrae stars is about twice that in V-band, so we find a larger percentage of low amplitude variables than catalogs such as Abbas et al (2014). Interestingly, the (NUV-V)_0 color is sensitive to metallicity and can be used to distinguish between variables of the same period but differing [Fe/H]. This color is also more sensitive to T_eff than optical colors and can be used to identify the red edge of the instability gap. We find 8 DSCT stars, 17 RRc stars, 1 RRd star and 84…
As extensive ground-based observations and characterisation of different variable stars are of the utmost importance in preparing optimal input catalogues for space missions, our aim was to search for new variable stars in selected fields of the northern sky. We obtained 24470 CCD images and analysed photometric time series of stars using the DAOPHOT based package Muniwin as the first step, and the Period04 package was used to further analyse the suspected new variable stars. The light curves and other observational results are presented for 3598 stars online. We found 81 new variable stars, a…
Using an image subtraction method we have searched for variable stars in the globular cluster M14. We confirmed 62 previously known catalogued variables. In addition to the previoulsy known variables we have identified 71 new variables. We have confirmed the periods of most of the cataloged variables with just a few exceptions. Of the the total number of confirmed variables, we found a total of 112 RR Lyrae stars, several of which exhibited the Blazhko Effect. Of the total we classified 55 RR0, 57 RR1, 19 variables with periods greater than 2 days, a W UMa contact binary, and an SX Phe star. W…
We have analyzed OGLE-III photometry for stars in the SMC cluster NGC 299. Two eclipsing binaries and one intrinsic variable (most likely a Be star) are identified. Unlike other young SMC clusters, no low-amplitude pulsating variables are present.
We look for high-amplitude variable young stars in the open clusters and associations of the Orion Belt. We use public data from the ASAS-3 Photometric V-band Catalogue of the All Sky Automated Survey, infrared photometry from the 2MASS and IRAS catalogues, proper motions, and the Aladin sky atlas to obtain a list of the most variable stars in a survey area of side 5 deg centred on the bright star Alnilam (eps Ori) in the centre of the Orion Belt. We identify 32 highly-variable stars, of which 16 had not been reported to vary before. They are mostly variable young stars and candidates (16) and…
The fourth part of the OGLE-III Catalog of Variable Stars presents 91 995 long-period variables (LPVs) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). This sample consists of 79 200 OGLE Small Amplitude Red Giants (OSARGs), 11 128 semiregular variables (SRVs) and 1667 Mira stars. The catalog data include basic photometric and astrometric properties of these stars, long-term multi-epoch VI photometry and finding charts. We describe the methods used for the identification and classification of LPVs. The distribution of I-band amplitudes for carbon-rich stars shows two maxima, corresponding to Miras and SRV…
We examine 4-yr almost continuous Kepler photometry of 115 B stars. We find that the light curves of 39 percent of these stars are simply described by a low-frequency sinusoid and its harmonic, usually with variable amplitudes, which we interpret as rotational modulation. A large fraction (28 percent) of B stars might be classified as ellipsoidal variables, but a statistical argument suggests that these are probably rotational variables as well. About 8 percent of the rotational variables have a peculiar periodogram feature which is common among A stars. The physical cause of this is very like…
We discuss moderate resolution spectra, multicolor photometry, and light curves of thirty-one of the most luminous stars and variables in the giant spiral M101. The majority are intermediate A to F-type supergiants. We present new photometry and light curves for three known "irregular blue variables" V2, V4 and V9) and identify a new candidate. Their spectra and variability confirm that they are LBV candidates and V9 may be in an LBV-like maximum light state or eruption.
The studies of semiregular variables of stars by different authors are considered, and the main theoretical and observational problems associated with these stars are reviewed. Their evolutionary status and possible connection with long-period variables such as Mira Ceti are discussed. Individual objects belonging to different types of semiregular variables are described in detail. After leaving the main sequence, the stars pass through the region of instability of Cepheids, turning into radially pulsating variables of type δCephei. These stars can be associated with semiregular variables gian…
This paper presents the Charge-Coupled Device time-series photometric observations of the open cluster NGC 1582 and its surrounding field with Johnson B, V and R filters by using Nanshan 1m telescope of Xinjiang Astronomical Observatory. 19 variable stars and 3 variable candidates were detected in a 45 {\times} 48.75 field around the cluster. 12 of the variable stars are newly-discovered variable objects. The physical properties, classifications, and membership of the 22 objects are studied through their light curves, their positions on the color-magnitude diagram, and with the archival data f…
Photometric Search for variable stars in the field of two Northern open clusters, DOLIDGE 14 and NGC 1960
本工作利用次级标准转换和较差测光法分析 NGC 1960 和 DOLIDZE 14 视场内的恒星光变曲线,发现了 22 颗变星,并通过周期分析、成员星分析和 C-M 图确认了它们的分类与演化状态。
We report the discovery of 19 variable stars and two blue-stragglers in the field of the open cluster NGC6866. Three of the variable stars we classify as delta Sct, two, as gamma Dor, four, as WUMa, two, as ellipsoidal variables, and one, as an eclipsing binary. Seven stars show irregular variability. Two of the pulsators, a delta Sct star NGC 6866-29 and a gamma Dor star NGC6866-21, are multiperiodic. From an analysis of proper motions, we conclude that the delta Sct stars, one of the gamma Dor stars and both blue-stragglers are very probable members of the cluster. The position on the color-…
In this paper we present time series photometry of 104 variable stars in the cluster region NGC 1893. The association of the present variable candidates to the cluster NGC 1893 has been determined by using $(U-B)/(B-V)$ and $(J-H)/(H-K)$ two colour diagrams, and $V/(V-I)$ colour magnitude diagram. Forty five stars are found to be main-sequence variables and these could be B-type variable stars associated with the cluster. We classified these objects as $β$ Cep, slowly pulsating B stars and new class variables as discussed by Mowlavi et al. (2013). These variable candidates show $\sim$0.005 to …
Recent progress in the studies of pulsating variable stars is summarized from an observational point of view. A number of unexpected phenomena have been revealed in the case of pulsators in the classical instability strip. These discoveries -- lacking theoretical explanation yet -- make pulsating stars more valuable objects for astrophysics than before. The emphasis is laid on Cepheids of all kind and RR Lyrae type variables, as well as binarity among pulsating variable stars.
We report the results of our search for pulsating subdwarf B stars in Full Frame Images collected during Year 2 of the TESS mission and covering the northern ecliptic hemisphere. This is a continuation of our effort we presented in Paper I. We found 13 likely new pulsating subdwarf B stars, 10 pulsating candidates that are identified as other hot subdwarfs, and 30 spectroscopically unclassified objects that show amplitude spectra typical of pulsating subdwarf B stars. We found 506 variable objects, most of them spectroscopically unclassified, hence their specific variability class yet to be co…
The sixth part of the OGLE-III catalog of Variable Stars presents δSct pulsators in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Altogether 2786 variable stars were found and amongst them 92 are multi-mode objects, including 67 stars pulsating in the fundamental mode and the first overtone (F/1O), nine double-mode pulsators with various combinations of the first three overtones excited (1O/2O, 2O/3O and 1O/3O pulsators), and two triple mode (F/1O/2O) δSct stars. In total 1490 of stars are marked as uncertain, due to scattered photometry and small amplitudes. For single-mode objects it was not possible to unamb…
We have searched for variable stars in deep V-band images of a field towards the Galactic plane in Carina. The images were taken with VIMOS instrument at ESO VLT during 4 contiguous nights in April 2005. We detected 348 variables among 50897 stars in the magnitude range between V=15.4 and V=24.5 mag. Upon detection, we classified the variables by direct eye inspection of their light curves. All variable objects but 9 OGLE transits in the field are new discoveries. We provide a complete catalog of all variables which includes eclipsing/ellipsoidal binaries, miscellaneous pulsators (mostly delta…
A long-term project, aiming at systematic search for variable stars in Galactic Open Clusters, was started at the Geneva Observatory in 2002. We have been observing regularly a sample of twenty-seven Galactic Open Clusters in the U, B, V Geneva filters. The goal is to identify and to study their variable stars, as well as the connection between the variable stars in a cluster and the cluster properties. We present the status of this work in progress, and show preliminary results for one of these clusters, IC 4651.
We identify 228 periodic variables in the region of young open cluster NGC 281 using time series photometry carried out from 1 m class ARIES telescopes, Nainital. The cluster membership of these identified variables is determined on the basis colour-magnitude, two colour diagrams and kinematic data. Eighty one variable stars are found to be members of the cluster NGC 281. Of 81 variables, 30 and 51 are probable main-sequence and pre-main-sequence members, respectively. Present study classifies main-sequence variable stars into different variability types according to their periods of variabili…
An Audit of the Light Curves of RV Tau Variable Stars in the ASAS-SN Database
本研究审计了 ASAS-SN 数据库中 84 颗 RV Tau 变星的光变曲线,通过周期分析发现交替极小值特征易导致自动分类混淆,并提供了更新的周期与分类结果。
The fifteenth part of the OGLE-III Catalog of Variable Stars (OIII-CVS) contains 232,406 long-period variables (LPVs) detected in the OGLE-II and OGLE-III fields toward the Galactic bulge. The sample consists of 6528 Mira stars, 33,235 semiregular variables and 192,643 OGLE small amplitude red giants. The catalog data and data resources that are being published include observational parameters of stars, finding charts, and time-series I- and V-band photometry obtained between 1997 and 2009. We discuss statistical features of the sample and compare it with collections of LPVs in the Magellanic …
We present the first scientific results of the program on short term period variable stars observed using the OAUNI facility at the peruvian Andes. These results include good quality light curves of delta Scuti stars, rapidly oscillating stars along with eclipsing and cataclysmic binaries. The photometric precision reached by the available instrumental and equipment, and used in the several scientific subprograms, has satisfied the initial expectations.
We have recently announced that the General Catalogue of Variable Stars enters the stage of its fifth, purely electronic edition (GCVS 5.1). Recently, we have incorporated a new, completely revised version for 1408 variable stars in the constellation of Centaurus into the GCVS 5.1. Working on this revision, we used current possibilities of data mining, suggested new variability types for many variable stars, found new light elements for a large number of periodic variables. This paper describes the work fulfilled during the preparation of the GCVS 5.1 version for Centaurus, discusses in detail…
Photometric data from the ASAS - South (declination less than 29 deg) survey have been used for identification of bright stars located near the sources from the ROSAT All Sky Survey Bright Source Catalog (RBSC). In total 6028 stars brighter than 12.5 mag in I- or V -bands have been selected and analyzed for periodicity. Altogether 2302 variable stars have been found with periods ranging from 0.137 d to 193 d. Most of these stars have X-ray emission of coronal origin with a few cataclysmic binaries and early type stars with colliding winds. Whenever it was possible we collected data available i…
This study aims to assess the properties and classification of 62 variable stars in Cygnus, little studied since their discovery and originally reported in the Information Bulletin on Variable Stars (IBVS) 1302. Using data from previous studies and several astronomical databases, we performed our analysis mainly utilizing a period analysis software and comparing the photometric characteristics of the variables in a Colour-Absolute Magnitude Diagram. For all stars, the variability is confirmed. We discovered new significant results for the period and/or type of 17 variables and highlighted inco…
We report the results of a search for variable stars in the open cluster NGC 2141. Ten variable stars are detected, among which nine are new variable stars and they are classified as three short period W UMa type eclipsing binaries, two EA type eclipsing binaries, one EB type eclipsing binary, one very short period RS CVn type eclipsing binary, one d type RR Lyrae variable star, and one unknown type variable star. The membership and physical properties are discussed, based on their light curves, positions in the CMDs, spatial locations and periods. A known EB type eclipsing binary is also iden…
This study aims to assess the properties and classification of 55 variable stars in Scutum, little studied since their discovery and reported in the Information Bulletin on Variable Stars (IBVS) 985 and update. Using data from previous studies and several astronomical databases, we performed our analysis mainly utilizing a period analysis software and comparing the photometric characteristics of the variables in a Colour-Absolute Magnitude Diagram. For all stars, the variability is confirmed. We discovered new significant results for the period and/or type of 17 variables and highlighted incor…
From TESS photometry, 493 mid- to late-B stars with high frequencies (Maia variables) have been identified. The distribution of projected rotational velocities shows that the rotation rates of Maia variables are no different from those of SPB stars. Moreover, many Maia stars pulsate with frequencies exceeding 60 c/d. Rapid rotation is ruled out as a possible factor in understanding the Maia variables. There is clearly a serious problem with current pulsational models. Not only are the models unable to account for the Maia stars, but they also fail to account for the fact that SPB and gamma Dor…
Models of period variations are basic tools for period analyzes of variable stars. We introduce phase function and instant period and formulate basic relations and equations among them. Some simple period models are also presented.
We present a catalog of 4880 newly identified RR Lyrae variable stars (4433 RRab, 446 RRc and 1 RRd) found during the search for supernovae by the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN). The light curves, classified using the "Upsilon" random forest classifier and visually verified, are available through the ASAS-SN variable star database (https://asas-sn.osu.edu/variables). The database also contains light curves for an expanding number of additional new variables (~50,000 at present) and will begin to include the light curves of known variable stars in the near future.
We review ways in which observations of the changing periods of pulsating variable stars can be used to detect and directly measure their evolution. We briefly describe the two main techniques of analysis -- (O-C) analysis and wavelet analysis -- and results for pulsating variable star types which are reasonably periodic: type I and II Cepheids, RR Lyrae stars, beta Cephei stars, and Mira stars. We comment briefly on delta Scuti stars and pulsating white dwarfs. For some of these variable star types, observations agree approximately with the predictions of evolutionary models, but there still …
The Mt. Suhora M\,dwarf survey searching for pulsations in low mass main sequence stars has acquired CCD photometry of 46 M\,dwarf stars during the first year of the project (Baran et al 2011). As a by-product of this search hundreds field stars have been checked for variability. This paper presents our initial result of a search for periodic variables in field stars observed in the course of the survey. On the basis of the periodicity and the shape of the light curves, eight new variables has been detected, among which five are $δ$ Scuti stars and three likely RR Lyrae stars. Although variati…
We present an update on the variable star survey performed on the TESS 30 min Full Frame Image (FFI) data reported by our first two papers in this series. This update includes a contamination analysis in order to identify false positives and analysis of the TESS 10 min FFI data collected during Years 3 and 4 of the mission. We clarify the variability status of 2 995 targets identifying 1 403 variable stars. In addition, we spectroscopically classify 24 pre-filtered targets sampled with the 10 min FFI data and discover 11 new sdB pulsators. Future follow-up space- and/or ground-based data of va…
The ESA Gaia mission provides a unique time-domain survey for more than 1.6 billion sources with G ~ 21 mag. We showcase stellar variability across the Galactic colour-absolute magnitude diagram (CaMD), focusing on pulsating, eruptive, and cataclysmic variables, as well as on stars exhibiting variability due to rotation and eclipses. We illustrate the locations of variable star classes, variable object fractions, and typical variability amplitudes throughout the CaMD and illustrate how variability-related changes in colour and brightness induce `motions' using 22 months worth of calibrated pho…
We present results of a CCD variability search in the field of the young open cluster NGC 6834. We discover 15 stars to be variable in light. The brightest, a multiperiodic Gamma Doradus-type variable is a foreground star. The eight fainter ones, including a Gamma Cassiopeiae-type variable, two Lambda Eridani-type variables, an ellipsoidal variable, an EB-type eclipsing binary, and three variable stars we could not classify, all have E(B-V) within proper range, thus fulfilling the necessary condition to be members. One of the three unclassified variables may be a non-member on account of its l…
This study aims to assess the properties and classification of 40 variable stars in Sagittarius, little studied since their discovery and reported in the Information Bulletin on Variable Stars (IBVS) 985 and update. Using data from previous studies and several astronomical databases, we performed our analysis mainly utilizing a period analysis software and comparing the photometric characteristics of the variables in a Colour-Absolute Magnitude Diagram. For all stars, the variability is confirmed. We discovered new significant results for the period and/or type of 15 variables and highlighted …
This is the first in a series of papers studying the variable stars in Large Magellanic Cloud globular clusters. The primary goal of this series is to better understand how the RR Lyrae stars in Oosterhoff-intermediate systems compare to those in Oosterhoff I/II systems. In this paper we present the results of our new time-series BV photometric study of NGC 1466. A total of 62 variables were identified in the cluster, of which 16 are new discoveries. The variables include 30 RRab stars, 11 RRc's, 8 RRd's, 1 candidate RR Lyrae, 2 long-period variables, 1 potential anomalous Cepheid, and 9 varia…
We present the database of maser sources in H2O, OH and SiO lines that can be used to identify and study variable stars at evolved stages. Detecting the maser emission in H2O, OH and SiO molecules toward infrared-excess objects is one of the methods of identification long-period variables (LPVs, including Miras and Semi-Regular), because these stars exhibit maser activity in their circumstellar shells. Our sample contains 1803 known LPV objects. 46% of these stars (832 objects) manifest maser emission in the line of at least one molecule: H2O, OH or SiO. We use the database of circumstellar ma…
I report the discovery of nine new variable stars in Cygnus: five pulsating (VSX J192319.8+280832, VSX J192405.8+280352, VSX J192220.7+275518, VSX J192304.4+280231, VSX J192255.1+274744) and four eclipsing (VSX J192252.4+280217, VSX J192251.4+280456, VSX J192226.0+281019, VSX J192524.9+275342). The variability type of the variable star [WM2007] 1176, that was considered in literature a possible RRC, was found to be a W UMa variable with an obvious O'Connell effect.
We have conducted a photometric survey of the globular cluster NGC 6397 in a search for variable stars. We obtained ~11h of time-resolved photometric images with one ne European Southern Observatory-Very Large Telescope using the FOcal Reducer and low dispersion Spectrograph imager distributed over two consecutive nights. We analyzed 8391 light curves of stars brighter than magnitude 23 with the 465 nm-filter, and we identified 412 variable stars, reaching ~ 4.8 +- 0.2 per cent of variability with timescales between 0.004 and 2d, with amplitudes variation greater than +- 0.2 mag.
We present the results of spectroscopy and multi-wavelength photometry of luminous and variable star candidates in the nearby spiral galaxies NGC 2403 and M81. We discuss specific classes of stars, the Luminous Blue Variables (LBVs), B[e] supergiants (sgB[e]), and the high luminosity yellow hypergiants. We identify two new LBV candidates, and three sgB[e] stars in M81. We also find that some stars previously considered LBV candidates are actually field stars. The confirmed and candidate LBVs and sgB[e] stars together with the other confirmed members are shown on the HR Diagrams for their respe…
We present optical $I$-band light curves of the stars towards a star-forming region Cygnus OB7 from 17 nights photometric observations. The light curves are generated from a total of 381 image frames with very good photometric precision. From the light curves of 1900 stars and their periodogram analyses, we detect 31 candidate variables including five previously identified. 14 out of 31 objects are periodic and exhibit the rotation rates in the range of 0.15 to 11.60 days. We characterize those candidate variables using optical/infrared colour-colour and colour-magnitude diagrams. From spectra…
C. Ragoonatha Chary, the first assistant at Madras Observatory during 1864 to 1880 was not only a celebrated observational astronomer but also a person who emphasized the need for incorporating modern observations based improvements into the traditional methods of astronomical calculations. He was one of the first few people who argued for establishment of independent modern Indian observatory for education and training. He was credited with the discovery of two variable stars R Reticuli and another star whose identity is uncertain. The person and his variable star discoveries are discussed.
The variable stars in the VSX catalog are derived from a multitude of inhomogeneous data sources and classification tools. This inhomogeneity complicates our understanding of variable star types, statistics, and properties, and it directly affects attempts to build training sets for current (and next) generation all-sky, time-domain surveys. We homogeneously analyze the ASAS-SN V-band light curves of ${\sim}412,000$ variables from the VSX catalog. The variables are classified using an updated random forest classifier with an $F_1$ score of 99.4\% and refinement criteria for individual classifi…
An increasing number of non-terminal eruptions are being found in the numerous surveys for optical transients. Very little is known about these giant eruptions, their progenitors and their evolutionary state. A greatly improved census of the likely progenitor class, including the most luminous evolved stars, the Luminous Blue Varaibles (LBVs), and the warm and cool hypergiants is now needed for a complete picture of the final pre-SN stages of very massive stars. We have begun a survey of the evolved and un stable luminous star populations in several nearby resolved galaxies. In this second pap…
Periodic variable A-F spectral type stars in the southern TESS continuous viewing zone
本研究利用TESS光变曲线和傅里叶变换人工分类南部连续观测区亮于10星等的A-F型变星,并与既有目录定量比较,证明TESS分类更可靠。
An analysis of a group of seven variables stars, classed by ASAS-SN as uncertain RRab, is performed comparing their position in a H-R diagram with respect to a sample of variables of the same type built from public astronomical databases.
The study of open clusters and their short period variable stars is fundamental in stellar evolution. Because the cluster members are formed in almost the same physical conditions, they share similar stellar properties such age and chemical composition. The assumption of common age, metallicity and distance impose strong constraints when modeling an ensemble of short period pulsators belonging to open clusters (e.g. Fox Machado et al., 2006). Very recently, Luo et al. (2009) carried out a search for variable stars in the direction of NGC 6811 with CCD photometry in B and V bands. They detected…
