We study FRW cosmology for scalar tensor theory where two scalar functions nonminimally coupled to the geometry and matter Lagrangian. In a framework to study stability and attractor solutions of the model in the phase space, we simultaneously solve the dynamical system and best fit the stability and model parameters with the observational data. The approach imposes restrictions on the model constraints while providing information about the universe dynamics. The model predict current accelerating universe, with a phantom crossing in near future.
We study the dynamics of the scalar tensor cosmological model in the presence of tachyon field. In an alternative approach, in two exponential and power law form of the scalar field functions in the model, field equations are solved by simultaneously best fitting the model parameters with the most recent observational data. This approach gives us an observationally verified interpretation of the dynamics of the universe. We then discuss the best fitted of equation of state parameter, the statefinder parameters and the reconstructed scalar field in the model.
We study the dynamical description of gravity, the appropriate definition of the scalar field energy-momentum tensor, and the interrelation between them in scalar-tensor theories of gravity. We show that the quantity which one would naively identify as the energy-momentum tensor of the scalar field is not appropriate because it is spoiled by a part of the dynamical description of gravity. A new connection can be defined in terms of which the full dynamical description of gravity is explicit, and the correct scalar field energy-momentum tensor can be immediately identified. Certain inequalities…
We refine and slightly enlarge the recently proposed first-order thermodynamics of scalar-tensor gravity to include gravitational scalar fields with timelike and past-directed gradients. The implications and subtleties arising in this situation are discussed and an exact cosmological solution of scalar-tensor theory in first-order thermodynamics is revisited in light of these results.
Stationary, asymptotically flat black holes in scalar-tensor theories of gravity are studied. It is shown that such black holes have no scalar hair and are the same as in General Relativity.
We reconstruct the potential of minimally coupling inflation model which produces small value of the tensor-scalar ratio. In these inflation models, tensor-scalar ratio is proportional to 1/N^2 scalar spectral index is in good agreement with recent cosmological observations, in which N is the e-folding number and p is a positive number. We also reconstruct f(R) gravity inflation from small tensor-tensor ratio.
In this paper within the scope of FRW cosmology for k = 0, \pm1 we study the dynamics of the universe for a cosmological model with a scalar field nonminimally coupled to matter. By best- fitting the model parameters with the observational data for the direct interaction between the dark sectors in the model we obtain observational constraints on cosmological parameters. The result shows that with the best fitted model parameters, only in flat universe, the phantom crossing occurs twice in the past and once in the future, whereas no crossing occurs for open and closed models of the universe.
The timing of binary pulsars allows us to place some of the tightest constraints on modified theories of gravity. Perhaps some of the most interesting and well-motivated extensions to General Relativity are scalar-tensor theories, in which gravity is mediated by the metric tensor and a scalar field. These theories predict large deviations from General Relativity in the presence of neutron stars through a phenomenon known as scalarization. Neutron stars in scalar-tensor theories develop scalar charges, which directly enter the timing model for binary pulsars. In this paper, we calculate and tab…
A role of the scalar-matter direct coupling in the evolution of scalar-tensor gravity was studied. If the coupling functions in the generalized scalar-tensor gravity satisfy a definite equation the scalar-tensor gravity is reduced to Einstein's tensor gravity. We consider the issue in Jordan frame and then Einstein frame. It is shown that the coupling strength in the right hand side of the master equation obtained in Damour and Nordtvedt(1993) must be added by a coupling strength $\hatβ$ which characterizes the scalar-matter direct coupling. If a minimum of potential $\ln C(φ)$ does not coinci…
It is shown that a Brans-Dicke scalar-tensor gravitational theory, which also includes Bekenstein's kind of interaction between the Maxwell and scalar fields, has a particular kind of solutions with highly enhanced gravitational effects as compared with General Relativity, prone to laboratory tests.
We present the relativistic hydrostatic equilibrium equations for a wide class of gravitational theories possessing a scalar-tensor representation. It turns out that the stellar structure equations can be written with respect to the scalar-tensor invariants, allowing to interpret their physical role.
We generalize the scalar tensor bigravity models to the non-minimal kinetic coupling scalar tensor bigravity models with two scalar fields whose kinetic terms are non-minimally coupled to two Einstein tensors constructed by two metrics. We show that a broad class of expanding universes can be explained by some solutions of this model. Then, we study the stability issue of the solutions by means of imposing homogeneous perturbation on the equations of motion and extract the stable solutions.
We reformulate the recently proposed regularized version of Lovelock gravity in four dimensions as a scalar-tensor theory. By promoting the warp factor of the internal space to a scalar degree of freedom by means of Kaluza-Klein reduction, we show that regularized Lovelock gravity can be described effectively by a certain subclass of the Horndeski theory. Cosmological aspects of this particular scalar-tensor theory are studied. It is found that the background with a scalar charge is generically allowed. The consequences of this scalar charge are briefly discussed.
We derive the scalar waveform generated by a binary of nonspinning compact objects (black holes or neutron stars) in a general class of scalar-tensor theories of gravity. The waveform is accurate to 1.5 post-Newtonian order [$O((v/c)^3)$] beyond the leading-order tensor gravitational waves (the "Newtonian quadrupole"). To solve the scalar-tensor field equations, we adapt the direct integration of the relaxed Einstein equations formalism developed by Will, Wiseman, and Pati. The internal gravity of the compact objects is treated with an approach developed by Eardley. We find that the scalar wav…
Recently published experimental results indicate the appeareance of unusual forces on asymmetric, electromagnetic resonant cavities. It is argued here that a particular class of scalar-tensor theories of gravity could account for this effect.
In a space of 4-dimensions, I will examine constrained variational problems in which the Lagrangian, and constraint scalar density, are concomitants of a (pseudo-Riemannian) metric tensor and its first two derivatives. The Lagrange multiplier for these constrained extremal problems will be a scalar field. For suitable choices of the Lagrangian, and constraint, we can obtain Euler-Lagrange equations which are second order in the scalar field and third order in the metric tensor. The effect of disformal transformations on the constraint Lagrangians, and their generalizations, is examined. This w…
We consider spinning generalizations of the Ellis wormhole in scalar-tensor theory. Analogous to other compact objects these wormholes can carry a non-trivial scalarization. We determine the domain of existence of the scalarized wormholes and investigate the effect of the scalarization on their properties. Depending on the choice of the coupling function, they may possess multiple throats and equators in the Jordan frame, while possessing only a single throat in the Einstein frame.
In this paper, we analyze a simple class of Horndeski scalar-tensor theory. We investigate several cosmological solutions for inflation, bounce scenario and finite future-time singuarities. Perturbations respect to Friedmann-Robertson-Walker metric are studied and discussed in the context of inflation.
The problem of determining the post-Newtonian parameter $γ$ in massive scalar-tensor theories is considered. We demonstrate equivalent correspondence between the post-Newtonian parameter $γ$ and the parameter appearing in the equation of null geodysic in massive scalar-tensor theories. We show that massive scalar-tensor theories can be distinguished from general relativity based on the predictions of Shapiro time delay. All calculations are presented using hybrid metric-Palatini f(R)-gravity as an example. The expression for Shapiro time delay in hybrid f(R)-gravity is obtained for the first t…
We have shown that, within the context of Scalar-Tensor theories, the anisotropic Bianchi-type cosmological models evolve towards de Sitter universe. A similar result holds in the case of cosmology in Lyra manifold. Thus the analogue of cosmic no-hair theorem of Wald (1983) hold in both the cases. In fact, during inflation there is no difference between scalar-tensor theories, Lyra's manifold and general relativity (GR).
We consider a scalar-tensor theory of gravitation with the scalar source being the trace of the stress-energy tensor of the scalar field itself and matter. We obtain an example of a numerical solution of the cosmological equations which shows that under some special choice of the scalar parameters, there exists a slow-roll regime in which the modern values of the Hubble and deceleration parameters may be obtained.
We calculate the most general action for a scalar-tensor model up to quadratic order in derivatives with deformed general covariance and non-minimal coupling. We demonstrate how different choices of the free functions recover specific well known scalar-tensor models. We look at the cosmological dynamics and find the general conditions for either inflation or a big bounce. Using this we present a novel non-minimally coupled scalar model which produces a bounce, and describe how to find similar models.
A generalization of the Hawking-Hayward quasilocal mass to scalar-tensor gravity is compared, in vacuo and for asymptotically flat stationary geometries, with a recent multipole expansion of the gravitational field. The quasilocal mass seen at spatial infinity coincides with the monopole term, lending credibility to this construct.
In this review we focus our attention on scalar-tensor gravity models and their empirical verification in terms of black hole and wormhole physics. We focus on a black hole, embedded in an expanding universe, describing both cosmological and astrophysical scales. We show that in scalar-tensor gravity it is quite common that the local geometry is isolated from the cosmological expansion, so that it does not backreact on the black hole metric. We try to extract common features of scalar-tensor black holes in an expanding universe and point out the gaps that must be filled.
In a four-dimensional space, I shall construct all of the conformally invariant scalar-tensor field theories, which are flat space compatible; i.e., well-defined and differentiable when evaluated for a flat metric tensor and constant scalar field. It will be shown that all such field theories must be at most of fourth-order in the derivatives of the field variables. The Lagrangian of any such field theory can be chosen to be a linear combination of four conformally invariant scalar-tensor Lagrangians, with the coefficients being functions of the scalar field. Three of these "generating" Lagran…
Starting from the second post-Keplerian (2PK) Hamiltonian describing the conservative part of the two-body dynamics in massless scalar-tensor (ST) theories, we build an effective-one-body (EOB) Hamiltonian which is a $ν$-deformation (where $ν= 0$ is the test mass limit) of the analytically known ST Hamiltonian of a test particle. This ST-EOB Hamiltonian leads to a simple (yet canonically equivalent) formulation of the conservative 2PK two-body problem, but also defines a resummation of the dynamics which is well-suited to ST regimes that depart strongly from general relativity (GR) and which m…

A short overview of black hole entropy in alternative gravitational theories is presented. Motivated by the recent attempts to explain the cosmic acceleration without dark energy, we focus on metric and Palatini f(R) gravity and on scalar-tensor theories.
We consider an approach to Brans-Dicke theory of gravity in which the scalar field has a geometrical nature. By postulating the Palatini variation, we find out that the role played by the scalar field consists in turning the space-time geometry into a Weyl integrable manifold. This procedure leads to a scalar-tensor theory that differs from the original Brans-Dicke theory in many aspects and presents some new features.
In this paper I shall consider field theories in a space of four-dimensions which have field variables consisting of the components of a metric tensor and scalar field. The field equations of these scalar-tensor field theories will be derivable from a variational principle using a Lagrange scalar density which is a concomitant of the field variables and their derivatives of arbitrary, but finite, order. I shall consider biconformal transformations of the field variables, which are conformal transformations which affect both the metric tensor and scalar field. A necessary and sufficient conditi…
In the framework of f(R) scalar-tensor cosmology, we use the Noether symmetry approach to find the cosmological models consistent with the Noether symmetry. We obtain the functions f(R) and H(a), or the corresponding differential equations, according to specific choices for the scalar field potential V(ϕ), the Brans-Dicke function ω(ϕ), some cosmological parameters, and the constants of motion.
