Particles that are heavy compared to the electroweak scale ($M \gg m_W$), and that are charged under electroweak SU(2) gauge interactions display universal properties such as a characteristic fine structure in the mass spectrum induced by electroweak symmetry breaking, and an approximately universal cross section for scattering on nuclear targets. The heavy particle effective theory framework is developed to compute these properties. As illustration, the spin independent cross section for low-velocity scattering on a nucleon is evaluated in the limit $M \gg m_W$, including complete leading-order matching onto quark and gluon operators, renormalization analysis, and systematic treatment of perturbative and hadronic-input uncertainties.
Super-weakly interacting massive particles produced in the late decays of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) are generic in large regions of supersymmetric parameter space and other frameworks for physics beyond the standard model. If their masses are similar to that of the decaying WIMP, then they could naturally account for all of the cosmological dark matter abundance. Their astrophysical consequences and collider signatures are distinct and different from WIMP candidates. In particular, they could modify Big Bang Nucleosynthesis, distort the Cosmic Microwave Background, reduce ga…
We study a Light Shinning Through the wall type setup with microwave cavities, where the regeneration cavity has a moving boundary condition oscillating harmonically. We find a parametric resonance that could enhance the probability conversion between Weakly Interacting Slim Particles and photons by several orders of magnitude.
The hypothesis of dark matter interacting with the standard model uniquely via the Higgs portal is severely challenged by experiments. However, if dark matter is a fermion, the Higgs-portal interaction implies the presence of mediators, which can change the phenomenology significantly. This article discusses the impact of weakly-interacting mediators on the dark-matter relic abundance, direct detection, and collider searches. At the LHC, a typical signature of Higgs-portal fermion dark matter features soft leptons and missing energy, similarly to gaugino production in models with supersymmetry…
In this paper we consider very weakly interacting and ultra light scalar and pseudoscalar dark matter candidates. We show that quantum gravity has important implications for such models and that the masses of the singlet scalar and pseudoscalar fields must be heavier than $3\times 10^{-3}$ eV. However, if they are gauged, their masses could be much lighter and as light as $10^{-22}\, {\rm eV}$. The existence of new gauge forces in the dark matter sector can thus be probed by atomic clocks or quantum sensors experiments.
In this paper we find new scaling laws for the evolution of $p$-brane networks in $N+1$-dimensional Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universes in the weakly-interacting limit, giving particular emphasis to the case of cosmic superstrings ($p=1$) living in a universe with three spatial dimensions (N=3). In particular, we show that, during the radiation era, the root-mean-square velocity is ${\bar v} =1/{\sqrt 2}$ and the characteristic length of non-interacting cosmic string networks scales as $L \propto a^{3/2}$ ($a$ is the scale factor), thus leading to string domination even when gravitational bac…
Future electroweak precision measurements in the Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC) project would significantly improve the precision of electroweak oblique parameters. We evaluate the expected precision through global fits, and study the corresponding sensitivity to weakly interacting fermionic dark matter. Three models with electroweak multiplets in the dark sector are investigated as illuminating examples. We find that the CEPC data can probe up to TeV scales and explore some regions where direct detection cannot reach, especially when the models respect the custodial symmetry.
Following a recent work on equation of state for strongly interacting quark-gluon plasma [J. Phys. G: Nucl. Part. Phys. 32, 993 (2006)], we revisited the equation of state by incorporating the non-perturbative effects in the deconfined plasma phase. Our results on thermodynamic observables viz. pressure, energy density, speed of sound etc. nicely fit with the lattice equation of state for gluon, massless and as well massive flavored plasma. Motivated by this agreement with lattice results, we have employed our equation of state to estimate the quarkonium suppression in an expanding, dissipativ…
A method is suggested for calculating the critical temperature in multicomponent field theory with weak interactions. The method is based on self-similar approximation theory allowing for the extrapolation of series in powers of asymptotically small coupling to finite and even infinite couplings. The extrapolation for the critical temperature employs self-similar factor approximants. The found results are in perfect agreement with Monte Carlo simulations.
Theories beyond the standard model include a number of new particles some of which might be light and weakly coupled to ordinary matter. Such particles affect equation of state of nuclear matter and can shift admissible masses of neutron stars to higher values. The internal structure of neutron stars is modified provided the ratio between coupling strength and mass squared of a weakly interacting light boson is above $g^2/μ^2 \sim 25 ~\mathrm{GeV}^{-2}$. We provide limits on the couplings with the strange sector, which cannot be achieved from laboratory experiments analysis. When the couplings…
An unbroken discrete symmetry, analogous to G-parity in QCD, exists in standard model extensions with vector-like coupling of electroweak SU(2) to "hidden sector" fermions that are confined by a strong gauge force. For an irreducible SU(2) representation of the hidden sector fermions, the lightest hidden sector states form an isotriplet of "pions" with calculable mass splittings and couplings to standard model fields. The parity can be extended to fermions in real representations of color SU(3), and can provide dark matter candidates with distinct collider signatures.
We examine the "naturalness" of the scaling of multiplicity and elliptic flow $v_2$ with rapidity in weakly and strongly coupled systems. We show that multiplicity scaling is relatively straight-forward to incorporate in existing ansatze with no unnatural assumptions, and argue that this scaling is relatively insensitive to the transport properties of the system. On the other hand, we argue that the observed scaling of elliptic flow observed is problematic to describe within a hydrodynamic model (the Knudsen number $K \ll 1$), but arises more naturally within weakly coupled systems (where the …
