In this paper, convolutional network coding is formulated by means of matrix power series representation of the local encoding kernel (LEK) matrices and global encoding kernel (GEK) matrices to establish its theoretical fundamentals for practical implementations. From the encoding perspective, the GEKs of a convolutional network code (CNC) are shown to be uniquely determined by its LEK matrix $K(z)$ if $K_0$, the constant coefficient matrix of $K(z)$, is nilpotent. This will simplify the CNC design because a nilpotent $K_0$ suffices to guarantee a unique set of GEKs. Besides, the relation between coding topology and $K(z)$ is also discussed. From the decoding perspective, the main theme is to justify that the first $L+1$ terms of the GEK matrix $F(z)$ at a sink $r$ suffice to check whether the code is decodable at $r$ with delay $L$ and to start decoding if so. The concomitant decoding scheme avoids dealing with $F(z)$, which may contain infinite terms, as a whole and hence reduces the complexity of decodability check. It potentially makes CNCs applicable to wireless networks.
Two concatenated coding schemes incorporating algebraic Reed-Solomon (RS) codes and polarization-adjusted convolutional (PAC) codes are proposed. Simulation results show that at a bit error rate of $10^{-5}$, a concatenated scheme using RS and PAC codes has more than $0.25$ dB coding gain over the NASA standard concatenation scheme, which uses RS and convolutional codes.
$2^m$-ary modulation creates $m$ bit channels which are neither independent nor identical, and this causes problems when applying polar coding because polar codes are designed for independent identical channels. Different from the existing multi-level coding (MLC) and bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) schemes, this paper provides a convolutional polar coded modulation (CPCM) method that preserves the low-complexity nature of BICM while offering improved spectral efficiency. Numerical results are given to show the good performance of the proposed method.
Distributed matrix computations -- matrix-matrix or matrix-vector multiplications -- are well-recognized to suffer from the problem of stragglers (slow or failed worker nodes). Much of prior work in this area is (i) either sub-optimal in terms of its straggler resilience, or (ii) suffers from numerical problems, i.e., there is a blow-up of round-off errors in the decoded result owing to the high condition numbers of the corresponding decoding matrices. Our work presents convolutional coding approach to this problem that removes these limitations. It is optimal in terms of its straggler resilie…
We propose in this paper to exploit convolutional low density generator matrix (LDGM) codes for transmission of Bernoulli sources over binary-input output-symmetric (BIOS) channels. To this end, we present a new framework to prove the coding theorems for linear codes, which unifies the channel coding theorem, the source coding theorem and the joint source-channel coding (JSCC) theorem. In the presented framework, the systematic bits and the corresponding parity-check bits play different roles. Precisely, the noisy systematic bits are used to limit the list size of typical codewords, while the …
Designs and methods for nested lattice codes using Construction D' lattices for coding and convolutional code lattices for shaping are described. Two encoding methods and a decoding algorithm for Construction D' coding lattices that can be used with shaping lattices for power-constrained channels are given. We construct nested lattice codes with good coding properties, a high shaping gain, and low-complexity encoding and decoding. Convolutional code generator polynomials for Construction A lattices with the greatest shaping gain are given, as a result of an extensive search. It is shown that r…
Convolutional precoding in polarization-adjusted convolutional (PAC) codes can reduce the number of minimum weight codewords (a.k.a error coefficient) of polar codes. This can result in improving the error correction performance of (near) maximum likelihood (ML) decoders such as sequential decoders and sphere decoders. However, PAC codes cannot be decoded by sphere decoding. The reason is twofold: 1) Sphere decoding of polar codes is performed from the last bit - due to the lower rectangular shape of the polar transform. Whereas the shape of PAC codes generator matrix is no longer triangular. …

This paper explores the design of convolutional codes for varying constraint lengths, focusing on their role in error correction in digital communication systems. Convolutional codes are essential in achieving reliable data transmission across noisy channels. The constraint length, which determines the memory of the encoder, plays a critical role in the performance of convolutional codes. This study investigates the effect of varying constraint lengths on coding performance, including code rate, complexity, and decoding accuracy. Simulation results and theoretical analysis illustrate the trade…
