These are lecture notes from the IMPANGA 2010 Summer School. The lectures survey some of the main features of equivariant cohomology at an introductory level. The first part is an overview, including basic definitions and examples. In the second lecture, I discuss one of the most useful aspects of the theory: the possibility of localizing at fixed points without losing information. The third lecture focuses on Grassmannians, and describes some recent positivity results about their equivariant cohomology rings.
This survey paper is based on my IMPANGA lectures given in the Banach Center, Warsaw in January 2011. We study the moduli of holomorphic map germs from the complex line into complex compact manifolds with applications in global singularity theory and the theory of hyperbolic algebraic varieties.
This document contains notes from the lectures of Corti, Kollár, Lazarsfeld, and Mustaţă at the workshop ``Minimal and canonical models in algebraic geometry" at MSRI, Berkeley, April 2007. The lectures give an overview of the recent advances on canonical and minimal models of algebraic varieties obtained by Hacon--McKernan and Birkar--Cascini--Hacon--McKernan.
On August 5, 2005 in the American Mathematical Society Summer Institute on Algebraic Geometry in Seattle and later in several conferences I gave lectures on my analytic proof of the finite generation of the canonical ring for the case of general type. After my lectures many people asked me for a copy of the slides which I used for my lectures. Since my slides were quite sketchy because of the time limitation for the lectures, I promised to post later on a preprint server my detailed notes from which my slides were extracted. Here are my detailed notes giving the techniques and the proof.
Lecture 1: Projective and Kähler Manifolds, the Enriques classification, construction techniques. Lecture 2: Surfaces of general type and their Canonical models. Deformation equivalence and singularities. Lecture 3: Deformation and diffeomorphism, canonical symplectic structure for surfaces of general type. Lecture 4: Irrational pencils, orbifold fundamental groups, and surfaces isogenous to a product. Lecture 5: Lefschetz pencils, braid and mapping class groups, and diffeomorphism of ABC-surfaces. Epilogue: Deformation, diffeomorphism and symplectomorphism type of surfaces of general type.
An expository lecture on the analogy between the subjects of the title. Delivered at the International Conference on Number Theory at the Korea Institute for Advanced Study in December 1997.
These are lecture notes on a recent remarkable preprint of Ein-Popa, which simplifies the algebraic proof of the finite generation of the canonical ring given by the team BCHM. The Ein-Popa extension result has been translated in the analytic language by Berndson-Paun and Paun. In these notes we follow the analytic language used in Berndson-Paun and Paun. The author of this manuscript does not claim any originality of the main ideas and arguments which are due to Ein-Popa, based in their turn in the ideas of Hacon-McKernan, Takayama and Siu.
These lecture notes provide a unified overview of most known canonical desingularization methods in characteristic zero. It starts with discussing the classical method, and then proceeds with the recently discovered ones: logarithmic desingularization of logarithmic schemes and morphisms, weighted methods: logarithmic and non-logarithmic ones, desingularization in wider contexts: quasi-excellent schemes and formal schemes, complex and non-archimedean spaces.
These lecture notes were prepared for the workshop ``Algebraic Geometry: Presentations by Young Researchers'' in Snowbird, Utah, July 2004, and for the autumn school in Lukecin, Poland, September 2004. In six lectures I attempted to present a non-technical introduction to derived categories of sheaves on varieties, including some important results like: -- the description of the derived category of P^n; -- Serre duality; -- the Bondal-Orlov result about derived categories of varieties with ample or antiample canonical class; -- the Mukai-Bondal-Orlov-Bridgeland criterion for equivalence; -- eq…
These are lecture notes for a course to be held. They provide a full discussion of certain analytic aspects of the uniformisation theory of (singular) holomorphic foliations by curves on compact Kaehler manifolds, with emphasis on their consequences on positivity properties of the corresponding canonical bundles.
These are lecture notes intended to supplement my second lecture at the Current Developments in Mathematics conference in 2014. In the first half of article, we give an introduction to the totally nonnegative Grassmannian together with a survey of some more recent work. In the second half of the article, we give a definition of a Grassmann polytope motivated by work of physicists on the amplituhedron. We propose to use Schubert calculus and canonical bases to replace linear algebra and convexity in the theory of polytopes.

The purpose of this note is to give an overview of our work on defining algebraic counterparts for W. Chen and Y. Ruan's Gromov-Witten Theory of orbifolds. This work will be described in detail in a subsequent paper. The presentation here is generally based on lectures given by two of us at the Orbifold Workshop in Madison, Wisconsin. Following the spirit of the workshop, we give a nontechnical introduction to stacks, a general discussion of twisted stable maps, and a run-through of the issues that arise when generalizing Gromov-Witten theory to Deligne-Mumford stacks. We make a special effort…
