I compute the Lorentzian EPRL/FK/KKL spinfoam vertex amplitude for regular graphs, with an arbitrary number of links and nodes, and coherent states peaked on a homogeneous and isotropic geometry. This form of the amplitude can be applied for example to a dipole with an arbitrary number of links or to the 4-simplex given by the compete graph on 5 nodes. All the resulting amplitudes have the same support, independently of the graph used, in the large j (large volume) limit. This implies that they all yield the Friedmann equation: I show this in the presence of the cosmological constant. This result indicates that in the semiclassical limit quantum corrections in spinfoam cosmology do not come from just refining the graph, but rather from relaxing the large j limit.
We examine spinfoam cosmology by use of a simple graph adapted to homogeneous cosmological models. We calculate dynamics in the isotropic limit, and provide the framework for the aniostropic case. The dynamical behaviour is calculating transition amplitudes between holomorphic coherent states on a single node graph. The resultant dynamics is peaked on solutions which have no support on the zero volume state, indicating that big bang type singularities are avoided within such models.
The dynamics of a homogeneous, anisotropic universe are investigated within the context of spinfoam cosmology. Transition amplitudes are calculated for a graph consisting of a single node and three links - the `Daisy graph' - probing the behaviour a classical Bianchi I spacetime. It is shown further how the use of such single node graphs gives rise to a simplification of states such that all orders in the spin expansion can be calculated, indicating that it is the vertex expansion that contains information about quantum dynamics.
We study the behaviour of the Lorentzian Engle-Pereira-Rovelli-Livine spinfoam amplitude with homogeneous boundary data, under a graph refinement going from five to twenty boundary tetrahedra. This can be interpreted as a wave function of the universe, for which we compute boundary geometrical operators, correlation functions and entanglement entropy. The numerical calculation is made possible by adapting the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm, along with recently developed computational methods appropriate for the deep quantum regime. We confirm that the transition amplitudes are stable against su…
We explore how to extract effective dynamics from loop quantum gravity and spinfoams truncated to a finite fixed graph, with the hope of modeling symmetry-reduced gravitational systems. We particularize our study to the 2-vertex graph with N links. We describe the canonical data using the recent formulation of the phase space in terms of spinors, and implement a symmetry-reduction to the homogeneous and isotropic sector. From the canonical point of view, we construct a consistent Hamiltonian for the model and discuss its relation with Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmologies. Then, we analyze th…
We compute the transition amplitude between coherent quantum-states of geometry peaked on homogeneous isotropic metrics. We use the holomorphic representations of loop quantum gravity and the Kaminski-Kisielowski-Lewandowski generalization of the new vertex, and work at first order in the vertex expansion, second order in the graph (multipole) expansion, and first order in 1/volume. We show that the resulting amplitude is in the kernel of a differential operator whose classical limit is the canonical hamiltonian of a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmology. This result is an indication that the d…
It is shown that the RTG predicts an opportunity of the intensive production of gravitons at the early stage of evolution of the homogeneous isotropic Universe. A hypothesis is suggested that the produced gas of gravitons could be just the ``dark matter'' which presently manifests itself as a ``missing mass'' in our Universe.
Some basic theorems on Killing vector fields are reviewed. In particular, the topic of a constant-curvature space is examined. A detailed proof is given for a theorem describing the most general form of the metric of a homogeneous isotropic space-time. Although this theorem can be considered to be commonly known, its complete proof is difficult to find in the literature. An example metric is presented such that all its spatial cross sections correspond to constant-curvature spaces, but it is not homogeneous and isotropic as a whole. An equivalent definition of a homogeneous and isotropic space…
We give a simple example of spacetime metric, illustrating that homogeneity and isotropy of space slices at all moments of time is not obligatory lifted to a full system of six Killing vector fields in spacetime, thus it cannot be interpreted as a symmetry of a four dimensional metric. The metric depends on two arbitrary and independent functions of time. One of these functions is the usual scale factor. The second function cannot be removed by coordinate transformations. We prove that it must be equal to zero, if the metric satisfies Einstein's equations and the matter energy momentum tensor …
We obtain expressions for the vacuum expectations of the energy-momentum tensor of the scalar field with an arbitrary coupling to the curvature in an N-dimensional homogeneous isotropic space for the vacuum determined by diagonalization of the Hamiltonian. We generalize the n-wave procedure to N-dimensional homogeneous isotropic space-time. Using the dimensional regularization, we investigate the geometric structure of the terms subtracted from the vacuum energy-momentum tensor in accordance with the n-wave procedure. We show that the geometric structures of the first three subtractions in the…
We prove well-posedness of the initial value problem for the Einstein equations for spatially-homogeneous cosmologies with data at an isotropic cosmological singularity, for which the matter content is either a cosmological constant with collisionless particles of a single mass (possibly zero) or a cosmological constant with a perfect fluid having the radiation equation of state. In both cases, with a positive cosmological constant, these solutions, except possibly for Bianchi-type-IX, will expand forever, and be geodesically-complete into the future.
The paper deals with cosmological solutions describing different phases of the Universe for the homogeneous and isotropic FLRW model of the Universe with torsion. Normally, torsion field is not suitable for maximally symmetric space time model. However, one may use a specific profile of vectorial torsion field, derived from a scalar function. By proper choices of the torsion scalar function, it is shown that a continuous cosmic evolution starting from the emergent scenario to the present late time acceleration is possible. Also thermodynamics of the system is analyzed and equivalence with Eins…
Recently, a new class of scalar constraint operators has been introduced in loop quantum gravity. They are defined on a space of solutions to the Gauss constraint and partial solutions to the vector constraint, called a vertex Hilbert space. We propose a subspace of the vertex Hilbert space formed by homogeneous-isotropic states, which is invariant under the action of the new scalar constraint operators. As a result, the operators can be reduced to our homogeneous-isotropic subspace. The (generalized) eigenstates of the reduced operator are eigenstates of the full operator. We discuss the feas…
4-dimensional homogeneous isotropic cosmological models obtained from solutions of vacuum 5-dimensional Einstein equations are considered. It is assumed, that the G(55)-component of the 5-d metric simulates matter in the comoving frame of reference. Observable 4-d metric is defined up to conformal transformations of the metric of 4-d section \tilde{g}, with a conformal factor as a function of the component G(55). It is demonstrated, that the form of this function determines the matter equation of state. Possible equations of state are analyzed separately for flat, open and close models.
We study the cosmological evolutions of the equation of state (EoS) for the universe in the homogeneous and isotropic Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) space-time. In particular, we reconstruct the cyclic universes by using the Weierstrass and Jacobian elliptic functions. It is explicitly illustrated that in several models the universe always stays in the non-phantom (quintessence) phase, whereas there also exist models in which the crossing of the phantom divide can be realized in the reconstructed cyclic universes.
Propagation of gravitational and acoustic plane waves in a flat universe filled with a general relativistic, homogeneous and isotropic, spatially flat continuum is studied. The continuum is described by analogues of nonrelativistic characteristics, namely energy per particle, pressure and Lame coefficients, and considered in the comoving proper-time gauge. For all modes with the given wave covector, differential equations governing the time dependence of the amplitudes are derived. In particular, longitudinal acoustic waves are described, in analogy with the nonrelativistic theory, by two coup…
Decoherence of Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) geometries due to massive vector fields with $SO(3)$ global symmetry is discussed in the context of Quantum Cosmology. (Talk presented at the 3rd National Meeting of Astronomy and Astrophysics, July 1993, IST, Lisboa, Portugal. -- A more complete version will be presented at MG7 conference and in the report CERN-TH.7241/94 DAMTP R-94/22 by the same authors)
We consider a Weyssenhoff fluid assuming that the spacetime is homogeneous and isotropic, therefore being relevant for cosmological considerations of gravity theories with torsion. In this paper, it is explicitely shown that the Weyssenhoff fluids obeying the Frenkel condition or the Papapetrou-Corinaldesi condition are incompatible with the cosmological principle, which restricts the torsion tensor to have only a vector and an axial vector component. Moreover it turns out that the Weyssenhoff fluid obeying the Tulczyjew condition is also incompatible with the cosmological principle. Based on …
The "dark energy" problem is investigated in the framework of the Poincare gauge theory of gravity in 4-dimensional Riemann-Cartan space-time. By using general expression for gravitational Lagrangian homogeneous isotropic cosmological models with pseudoscalar torsion function are built and investigated. It is shown that by certain restrictions on indefinite parameters of gravitational Lagrangian the cosmological equations at asymptotics contain effective cosmological constant and can lead to observable acceleration of cosmological expansion. This effect has geometrical nature and is connected …
Retrieval of classical behaviour in quantum cosmology is usually discussed in the framework of minisuperspace models in the presence of scalar fields together with the inhomogeneous modes either of the gravitational or of the scalar fields. In this work we propose alternatively a model where the scalar field is replaced by a massive vector field with global $U(1)$ or SO(3) symmetries.
A method for constructing statistically homogeneous and isotropic perfect fluid universe models with significant cosmic backreaction is proposed. The method is illustrated using a simplified model constructed as a Swiss-cheese model with Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi structures. The model exhibits significant cosmic backreaction and is used to study methods proposed in the literature for relating volume averaged quantities with observations. The comparison shows a poor agreement between exact redshift-distance relations and the relations predicted by schemes based on volume averages. Most of these dev…
This paper is devoted to study the cosmological behavior of homogeneous and isotropic universe model in the context of $f(R,T^φ)$ gravity where $φ$ is the scalar field. For this purpose, we follow the first order formalism defined by $H=W(φ)$. We evaluate Hubble parameter, effective equation of state parameter $(ω^{eff})$, deceleration parameter and potential of scalar field for three different values of $W(φ)$. We obtain phantom era in some cases for the early times. It is found that exponential expression of $W(φ)$ yields $ω^{eff}$ independent of time for flat universe and independent of mod…
We apply topspin network formalism to Loop Quantum Gravity in order to include in the theory the possibility of changes in the topology of spacetime. We apply this formalism to three toy models: with the first, we find that the topology can actually change due to the action of the Hamiltonian constraint and with the second we find that the final state might be a superposition of states with different topologies. In the third and last application, we consider an homogeneous and isotropic Universe, calculating the difference equation that describes the evolution of the system and which are the f…
We study relations between hydrodynamical (H) and scalar field (SF) models of the dark energy in the early Universe. Main attention is paid to SF described by the canonical Lagrangian within the homogeneous isotropic spatially flat cosmology. We analyze requirements that guarantee the same cosmological history for the SF and H-models at least for solutions with specially chosen initial conditions and we present a differential equation for the SF potential that ensures such a restricted equivalence of the SF and H-models. Also, we derived a condition that guarantees an approximate equivalence w…
The diagonalization of the metrical and canonical Hamilton operators of a scalar field with an arbitrary coupling, with a curvature in N-dimensional homogeneous isotropic space is considered in this paper. The energy spectrum of the corresponding quasiparticles is obtained and then the modified energy-momentum tensor is constructed; the latter coincides with the metrical energy-momentum tensor for conformal scalar field. Under the diagonalization of corresponding Hamilton operator the energies of relevant particles of a nonconformal field are equal to the oscillator frequencies, and the densit…
The diagonalization of the metrical Hamiltonian of a scalar field with an arbitrary coupling with a curvature in N-dimensional homogeneous isotropic space is performed. The energy spectrum of the corresponding quasiparticles is obtained. The energies of the quasiparticles corresponding to the diagonal form of the canonical Hamiltonian are calculated. The modified energy-momentum tensor with the following properties is constructed. It coincides with the metrical energy-momentum tensor for conformal scalar field. Under its diagonalization the energies of relevant particles of a nonconformal fiel…
The kinetic energy of a local system of objects placed in a curved spacetime is gained by the subsequent acceleration of the object following the more contracted region of spacetime. Normally this happens near massive gravitating stars. However, the gravitational dipole moment has been shown to be capable of self creating asymmetrically distorted spacetime in its vicinity, therby, capable of being accelerated indefinitely following the successive self created loophole of the spacetime. Localization of this kinetic energy may be possible by designing a system that uses the artificially created …
We describe the fully gauge invariant cosmological perturbation equations in teleparallel gravity by using the gauge covariant version of the Stewart lemma for obtaining the variations in tetrad perturbations. In teleparallel theory, perturbations are the result of small fluctuations in the tetrad field. The tetrad transforms as a vector in both its holonomic and anholonomic indices. As a result, in the gauge invariant formalism, physical degrees of freedom are those combinations of perturbation parameters which remain invariant under a diffeomorphism in the coordinate frame, followed by an ar…
Geometrical structure of homogeneous isotropic models in the frame of the metric-affine gauge theory of gravity (MAGT) is analyzed. By using general form of gravitational Lagrangian including both a scalar curvature and various invariants quadratic in the curvature, torsion and nonmetricity tensors, gravitational equations of MAGT for homogeneous isotropic models are deduced. It is shown, that obtained gravitational equations lead to generalized cosmological Friedmann equation for the metrics by certain restrictions on indefinite parameters of gravitational Lagrangian. Isotropic models in the …
We study homogeneous and isotropic cosmologies in a Weyl spacetime. We show that for homogeneous and isotropic spacetimes, the field equations can be reduced to the Einstein equations with a two-fluid source. We write the equations as a two-dimensional dynamical system and analyze the qualitative, asymptotic behavior of the models. We examine the possibility that in certain theories the Weyl 1-form may give rise to a late accelerated expansion of the Universe and conclude that such behaviour is not met as a generic feature of the simplest cosmologies.
The relation between angular diameter distance and redshift in a spherically symmetric dust-shell universe is studied. This model has large inhomogeneities of matter distribution on small scales. We have discovered that the relation agrees with that of an appropriate Friedmann-Lemaitre(FL) model if we set a ``homogeneous'' expansion law and a ``homogeneous'' averaged density field. This will support the averaging hypothesis that a universe looks like a FL model in spite of small-scale fluctuations of density field, if its averaged density field is homogeneous on large scales.
A solution of the linearized Einstein's equations for a spherically symmetric perturbation of the ultrarelativistic fluid in the homogeneous and isotropic universe is obtained. Conditions on the boundary of the perturbation are discussed. The examples of particle-like and wave-like solutions are given.
We study the late time evolution of flat and negatively curved Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) models with a perfect fluid matter source and a scalar field arising in the conformal frame of $f(R)$ theories nonminimally coupled to matter. Under mild assumptions on the potential V we prove that equilibria corresponding to non-negative local minima for V are asymptotically stable, as well as horizontal asymptotes approached from above by V. We classify all cases of the flat model where one of the matter components eventually dominates. In particular for a nondegenerate minimum of the potential w…
We calculate the relative conserved currents, superpotentials and conserved quantities between two homogeneous and isotropic universes. In particular we prove that their relative "energy" (defined as the conserved quantity associated to cosmic time coordinate translations for a comoving observer) is vanishing and so are the other conserved quantities related to a Lie subalgebra of vector fields isomorphic to the Poincaré algebra. These quantities are also conserved in time. We also find a relative conserved quantity for such a kind of solutions which is conserved in time though non-vanishing. …
We investigate the time evolution of a homogeneous isotropic universe which consists of a perfect gas governed by the Einstein-Euler-de Sitter equations. Under suitable assumptions on the equation of state and assumptions on the present states, we give a mathematically rigorous proof of the existence of the Big Bang at the finite past and expanding of the universe in the course to the infinite future.
The question of whether the Universe is spatially homogeneous and isotropic on the largest scales is of fundamental importance to cosmology, but has not yet been answered decisively. Surprisingly, neither an isotropic primary CMB nor combined observations of luminosity distances and galaxy number counts are sufficient to establish such a result. The inclusion of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect in CMB observations, however, dramatically improves this situation. We show that even a solitary observer who sees an isotropic blackbody CMB can conclude that the universe is homogeneous and isotropic in …
We derive the redshift and the angular diameter distance in rotationless dust universes which are statistically homogeneous and isotropic, but have otherwise arbitrary geometry. The calculation from first principles shows that the Dyer-Roeder approximation does not correctly describe the effect of clumping. Instead, the redshift and the distance are determined by the average expansion rate, the matter density today and the null geodesic shear. In particular, the position of the CMB peaks is consistent with significant spatial curvature provided the expansion history is sufficiently close to th…
We give the generalization of the method of the space-time description of particle creation by a gravitational field for a scalar field with nonconformal coupling to the curvature. The space-time correlation function is obtained for a created pair of the quasi-particles, corresponding to a diagonal form of the instantaneous Hamiltonian. The case of an adiabatic change of the metric of homogeneous isotropic space is analyzed. We show that the created pairs of quasi-particles in de Sitter space should be interpreted as pairs of virtual particles.
Various theoretical obstacles are associated with a homogeneous and isotropic distribution of ``charge'' which is subject to a repulsive, long-range force. We show how these can be overcome, for all practical purposes, by the simple device of endowing the particle which carries the force with a small mass. The resulting situation may be relevant to a phase of cosmological acceleration which is triggered by the approach to masslessness of such a force carrier.
We argue that all homogeneous and isotropic solutions in nonlinear massive gravity are unstable. For this purpose, we study the propagating modes on a Bianchi type--I manifold. We analyze their kinetic terms and dispersion relations as the background manifold approaches the homogeneous and isotropic limit. We show that in this limit, at least one ghost always exists and that its frequency tends to vanish for large scales, meaning that it cannot be integrated out from the low energy effective theory. This ghost mode is interpreted as a leading nonlinear perturbation around a homogeneous and iso…
We derive the relationship of the redshift and the angular diameter distance to the average expansion rate for universes which are statistically homogeneous and isotropic and where the distribution evolves slowly, but which have otherwise arbitrary geometry and matter content. The relevant average expansion rate is selected by the observable redshift and the assumed symmetry properties of the spacetime. We show why light deflection and shear remain small. We write down the evolution equations for the average expansion rate and discuss the validity of the dust approximation.
The problem is solved of describing scale factors of a homogeneous isotropic spaces-time such that the exact solution for the scalar field with a nonconformal coupling to curvature can be obtained from solutions for the conformally coupled field by redefining the mass and momentum. Explicit expressions for dependence of time from the large-scale factor are presented in the form of Abelian integrals in these cases. The exact solution for a scalar field with Gauss-Bonnet type coupling with curvature is received and it is shown that the corresponding nonconformal additions can dominate at the par…
The Einstein-Vlasov-Fokker-Planck system describes the kinetic diffusion dynamics of self-gravitating particles within the Einstein theory of general relativity. We study the Cauchy problem for spatially homogeneous and isotropic solutions and prove the existence of both global solutions and solutions that blow-up in finite time depending on the size of certain functions of the initial data. We also derive information on the large-time behavior of global solutions and toward the singularity for solutions which blow-up in fine time. Our results entail the existence of a phase of decelerated exp…
The covariant understanding of dispersion relations as level sets of Hamilton functions on phase space enables us to derive the most general dispersion relation compatible with homogeneous and isotropic spacetimes. We use this concept to present a Planck-scale deformation of the Hamiltonian of a particle in Friedman-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) geometry that is locally identical to the $κ$-Poincaré dispersion relation, in the same way as the dispersion relation of point particles in general relativity is locally identical to the one valid in special relativity. Studying the motion of parti…
Homogeneous, nearly-isotropic Bianchi cosmological models are considered. Their time evolution is expressed as a complete set of non-interacting linear modes on top of a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker background model. This connects the extensive literature on Bianchi models with the more commonly-adopted perturbation approach to general relativistic cosmological evolution. Expressions for the relevant metric perturbations in familiar coordinate systems can be extracted straightforwardly. Amongst other possibilities, this allows for future analysis of anisotropic matter sources in a more general g…
Given the present status of the problem of the electromagnetic energy tensor in matter, there is perhaps use in recalling a forgotten argument given in 1923 by W. Gordon. Let us consider a material medium which is homogeneous and isotropic when viewed in its rest frame. For such a medium, Gordon's argument allows to reduce the above mentioned problem to an analogous one, defined in a general relativistic vacuum, in presence of a suitably determined effective metric. For the latter problem the form of the Lagrangian is known already, hence the determination of the energy tensor is a straightfor…
We review the evolution of a spatially homogeneous and isotropic universe described by a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spacetime filled with a collisionless, neutral, simple, massive gas. The gas is described by a one-particle distribution function which satisfies the Liouville equation and is assumed to be homogeneous and isotropic. Making use of the isometries of the spacetime, we define precisely the homogeneity and isotropicity property of the distribution function, and based on this definition we give a concise derivation of the most general family of such distribution functions. For this fa…
Observables which would indicate a modified vacuum dispersion relations, possibly caused by quantum gravity effects, are a four momentum dependence of the cosmological redshift and the existence of a so called lateshift effect for massless or very light particles. Existence or non-existence of the later is currently analyzed on the basis of the available observational data from gamma ray bursts and compared to predictions of specific modified dispersion relation models. We consider the most general perturbation of the general relativistic dispersion relation of freely falling particles on homo…
Lorentz gauge theory of gravity was recently introduced. We study the homogeneous and isotropic universe of this theory. It is shown that some time after the matter in the universe is diluted enough, at $z \sim 0.6$, the decelerating expansion shifts spontaneously to an accelerating one without a dark energy. We discuss that Lorentz gauge theory puts no constraint on the total energy content of the universe at present time and therefore the magnitude of vacuum energy predicted by field theory is not contradictory anymore. It is demonstrated that in this theory the limit on the number of relati…
Usually, we assume that there is no inhomogeneity isotropic in terms of our location in our uni- verse. This assumption has not been observationally confirmed yet in sufficient accuracy, and we need to consider the possibility that there are non-negligible large-scale isotropic inhomogeneities in our universe. The existence of large-scale isotropic inhomogeneities affects the determination of the cosmological parameters. In particular, from only the distance-redshift relation, we can not dis- tinguish the inhomogeneous isotropic universe model from the homogeneous isotropic one, because of the…
Quantization of arbitrary free scalar fields in spatially homogeneous and isotropic space-times is considered. The quantum representation allowing a unitary evolution for the fields is taken as a requirement for the theory. Studying the group of linear canonical transformations, we show the relations between unitary evolution and choice of canonical variables. From these relations we obtain the conditions on the Hamiltonian such that there are canonical variables for which the field has unitary evolution. We then compute the linear transformation leading to these variables, also proving that t…
We show that the standard representation of homogeneous isotropic loop quantum cosmology (LQC) is the GNS-representation that corresponds to the unique state on the reduced quantum holonomy-flux $^*$-algebra that is invariant under residual diffeomorphisms $-$ both when the standard algebra is used as well as when one uses the extended algebra proposed by Fleischhack. More precisely, we find that in both situations the GNS-Hilbert spaces coincide, and that in the Fleischhack case the additional algebra elements are just mapped to zero operators. In order for the residual diffeomorphisms to hav…
Simply-connected homogeneous spacetimes for kinematical and aristotelian Lie algebras (with space isotropy) have recently been classified in all dimensions. In this paper, we continue the study of these "maximally symmetric" spacetimes by investigating their local geometry. For each such spacetime and relative to exponential coordinates, we calculate the (infinitesimal) action of the kinematical symmetries, paying particular attention to the action of the boosts, showing in almost all cases that they act with generic non-compact orbits. We also calculate the soldering form, the associated viel…
