We study the LHC potential for discovering TeV-scale SU(2)_L 5-plet fermions introduced recently to explain small neutrino masses. We show that the Drell-Yan production and the decays of new exotic Sigma leptons are testable at the LHC. Their production is abundant due to nontrivial electroweak gauge charges. For 1 fb^-1 of integrated luminosity at the present LHC sqrt{s}=7 TeV, there can be 270 Sigma-Sigmabar pairs produced for M_Sigma = 400 GeV. Besides producing same-sign dilepton events, they could lead, due to a chosen small mixing between heavy and light leptons, to ~10 golden decays Sigma^{+++}(Sigma^{+++}-bar) --> W^\pm W^\pm l^\pm with a specific decay signature.
The observation of charged lepton flavour violation would be a smoking gun for new physics and could help in pinpointing the mechanism at the origin of neutrino masses and mixing. We present here our recent studies of lepton flavour violating Higgs decays in the inverse seesaw and its supersymmetric embedding, two examples of low-scale seesaw mechanisms. We predict branching ratios as large as $10^{-5}$ for the decays $h\rightarrow τμ$ and $h \rightarrow τe$ in the inverse seesaw, which can be probed in future colliders. Supersymmetric contributions can enhance the branching ratio of $h\righta…
One of the main purposes of SHiP experiment is to shed light on neutrino mass generation mechanisms like the so-called seesaw. We consider a minimal type-I seesaw neutrino mass mechanism model with two heavy neutral leptons (right-handed or sterile neutrinos) with arbitrary masses. Extremely high active-sterile mixing angle requires a correlation between the phases of the Dirac neutrino couplings. Actual experimental limits on the half-life of neutrinoless double beta decay $0νββ$-rate on the active-sterile mixing angle are not significative for SHiP.
In this paper, the lepton flavor violating $τ\to \ell P(V)$ ($P,V= π^0, η, η^{\prime}, ρ^0, ω, ϕ$) and $τ\to 3\ell$ ($\ell = e, μ$) decays are studied in the framework of the type-III seesaw model, in which new triplet fermions with a zero hypercharge (Y=0) interact with ordinary lepton doublets via Yukawa couplings, and affect tree-level leptonic Z-boson couplings. We investigate the experimental bound from the leptonic Z decay to get contraint on the exsiting parameters space. We predict that the upper limits on the branching ratios of $τ\to \ell P(V)$ and $τ\to 3\ell$ can reach the experime…
The canonical type-I seesaw model with three heavy Majorana neutrinos is one of the most natural extensions of the standard model (SM) to accommodate tiny Majorana masses of three ordinary neutrinos. At low-energy scales, Majorana neutrino masses and unitarity violation of lepton flavor mixing have been extensively discussed in the literature, which are respectively generated by the unique dimension-five Weinberg operator and one dimension-six operator in the seesaw effective field theory (SEFT) with the tree-level matching. In this work, we clarify that a self-consistent calculation of radiat…
We discuss the impact of fermion mass matrices on some lepton number violating processes, namely baryogenesis via leptogenesis and neutrinoless double beta decay, and on some lepton flavor violating processes, namely radiative lepton decays in supersymmetric seesaw models.
We investigate a model with local U(1)$_{B-L}$ and discrete $Z_2$ symmetries where two types of weak isospin singlet neutrinos, vector-like charged lepton and exotic scalar fields are introduced. The linear seesaw mechanism is induced at one-loop level through Yukawa interactions associated with the standard model leptons and exotic fields. We also discuss lepton flavor violation and muon anomalous dipole magnetic moment induced by the new Yukawa interaction. In addition, our model has dark matter candidate which is the lightest $Z_2$ odd neutral particle. We calculate the relic density and co…
We explore generic features of the leptonic CP violation in the framework of the seesaw type I mechanism with similarity of the Dirac lepton and quarks mass matrices $m_D$. For this, we elaborate on the standard parametrization conditions which allow to simultaneously obtain the Dirac and Majorana phases. If the only origin of CP violation is the left-handed (LH) transformation which diagonalizes $m_D$ (similar to quarks), the leptonic CP violation is suppressed and the Dirac phase is close to $π$ or to $0$ with $\sin δ_{CP} \approx (\sin θ_{13}^q /\sin θ_{13}) \cos θ_{23} \sin δ_q \sim λ^2 \s…
The type-I seesaw model is probably the most straightforward and best studied extension of the Standard Model that can account for the tiny active neutrino masses determined from neutrino oscillation data. In this article, we calculate the complete set of one-loop corrections to charged lepton flavour violating processes within this model. We give the results both using exact diagonalisation of the neutrino mass matrix, and at at leading order in the seesaw expansion (i.e. $\mathcal{O}(v^2/M_R^2)$). Furthermore, we perform the matching onto the $SU(2)_L$ invariant Standard Model Effective Fiel…
We study phenomenological implications of a radiative inverse seesaw dark matter model. In this model, because neutrino masses are generated at two loop level with inverse seesaw, the new physics mass scale can be as low as a few hundred GeV and the model also naturally contain dark matter candidate. The Yukawa couplings linking the SM leptons and new particles can be large. This can lead to large lepton flavor violating effects. We find that future experimental data on $μ\to e γ$ and $μ- e$ conversion can further test the model. The new charged particles can affect significantly the $h \to γγ…
The Majorana nature of neutrinos is strongly motivated from the theoretical and phenomenological point of view. A plethora of neutrino mass models, known collectively as Seesaw models, exist that could generate both a viable neutrino mass spectrum and mixing pattern. They can also lead to rich, new phenomenology, including lepton number non-conservation as well as new particles, that may be observable at collider experiments. It is therefore vital to search for such new phenomena and the mass scale associated with neutrino mass generation at high energy colliders. In this review, we consider a…
The type II seesaw mechanism introduces a hypercharged Higgs triplet to explain the observed neutrino masses and mixing. Among three triplet components, the doubly charged Higgs boson can be the lightest and decay mainly to same-sign di-leptons. Furthermore, the heavier singly charged or neutral Higgs boson produces a doubly charged Higgs boson through its fast gauge decay. This leads to a novel signature of same-sign tetra-leptons resulting from a pair production of same-sign doubly charged Higgs bosons caused by the nearly degenerate neutral scalar mixing which can be sizable for an appropri…
Now the bounds on the lepton-flavor violating (LFV) decay modes of tau lepton are being improved by the Belle experiment in the KEK B factory. In this paper the LFV decay of tau lepton is discussed in the supersymmetric seesaw model, using the current neutrino oscillation data.
We revisit minimal non-supersymmetric models of SU(5) Grand Unification with the type II seesaw mechanism as the origin of neutrino masses. Imposing the requirement of gauge coupling unification and the proton lifetime bounds, we perform a Bayesian fit and obtain robust quantitative information on the mass scales of the beyond the Standard Model particles. We then study lepton-flavour-violating (LFV) processes induced by the type II scalar triplet and its SU(5) partners, showing that the interplay of upcoming searches for different LFV observables can provide additional information on the mass…
We show that models with exotic leptons transforming as E ~ (1,3,-1) under the standard model gauge symmetry are well suited for generating neutrino mass via a radiative inverse seesaw. This approach realizes natural neutrino masses and allows multiple new states to appear at the TeV scale. The exotic leptons are therefore good candidates for new physics that can be probed at the LHC. Furthermore, remnant low-energy symmetries ensure a stable dark matter candidate, providing a link between dark matter and the origins of neutrino mass.
The sensitivity of beam dump experiments to heavy neutral leptons depends on the relative strength of their couplings to individual lepton flavours in the Standard Model. We study the impact of present neutrino oscillation data on these couplings in the minimal type I seesaw model and find that it significantly constrains the allowed heavy neutrino flavour mixing patterns. We estimate the effect that the DUNE experiment will have on these predictions. We then discuss implication that this has for the sensitivity of the NA62 experiment when operated in the beam dump mode and provide sensitivity…
We propose a left-right symmetric framework with universal seesaw mechanism for the generation of masses of the Standard Model quarks and leptons. Heavy vector-like singlet quarks and leptons are required for generation of Standard Model-like quark and lepton masses through seesaw mechanism. A softly broken $Z_2$ symmetry distinguishes the lepton sector and the quark sector of the model. This leads to the presence of some lepton-specific interactions that can produce unique collider signatures which can be explored at the current Large Hadron Collider run and also future colliders.
We study LHC signatures of Type III seesaw in which SU(2)_L triplet leptons are introduced to supply the heavy seesaw masses. To detect the signals of these heavy triplet leptons, one needs to understand their decays to standard model particles which depend on how light and heavy leptons mix with each other. We concentrate on the usual solutions with small light and heavy lepton mixing of order the square root of the ratio of light and heavy masses, (m_ν/M_{ν_R})^{1/2}. This class of solutions can lead to a visible displaced vertex detectable at the LHC which can be used to distinguish small m…
In the context of supersymmetric seesaw models of neutrino masses with non-degenerate heavy neutrinos, we show that Dirac Yukawa interactions N^c_i (Y_nu)_{ij} L_j H_2 induce large threshold corrections to the slepton soft masses via renormalization. While still yielding rates for lepton-flavour-violating processes below the experimental bounds, these contributions may increase the muon and electron electric dipole moments d_mu and d_e by several orders of magnitude. In the leading logarithmic approximation, this is due to three additional physical phases in Y_nu, one of which also contributes…
The inverse seesaw mechanism of neutrino mass, i.e. m_nu = (m_D^2/m_N^2)epsilon_L where epsilon_L is small, is discussed in the context of the U(1)_Sigma model. This is a gauge extension of the Standard Model of particle interactions with lepton triplets (Sigma^+,Sigma^),Sigma^-) as (Type III) seesaw anchors for obtaining small Majorana neutrino masses.
We discuss a supersymmetric inverse seesaw model in which lepton flavour violating decays can be enhanced either by flavour violating slepton contributions or by the non-unitarity of the charged current mixing matrix. As an example we calculate Br(mu -> e gamma) taking into account both heavy lepton exchange as well as supersymmetric diagrams in a minimal supergravity framework. We find that the for the same parameters the rate can be enhanced with respect to seesaw model expectations, with or without supersymmetry.
We examine the role of seesaw motivated exotic scalars in loop-mediated Higgs decays. We consider a simple TeV-scale seesaw model built upon the fermionic quintuplet mediator in conjunction with the scalar quadruplet, where we examine portions of the model parameter space for which the contributions of charged components of the scalar quadruplet significantly increase the $h \to γγ$ decay rate. The most significant change in the diphoton width comes from a doubly charged scalar Φ^{--} which should be the lightest component in the scalar quadruplet. There is a mild suppression of the $h \to Z γ…
We study the constraints on a minimal supersymmetric seesaw model imposed by neutrino data, charged lepton flavor violation, thermal leptogenesis and perturbativity. We show that it is possible to constrain the three heavy Majorana neutrino masses as well as the complex Yukawa coupling matrix. Our results provide a first step towards a seesaw benchmark model for further phenomenological studies and model building.
In the inverse seesaw mechanism where the spontaneously broken B-L symmetry induces tiny B-L violating Majorana masses for right-handed neutrinos, non-standard Higgs signatures can arise due to a possible Higgs doublet and singlet mixing and/or Higgs boson decays to a left- and right-handed neutrino. This leads to a remarkable feature of hadronically quiet di-lepton final states which can exhibit, in particular, lepton flavour violating signatures coming from flavour-dependent neutrino Yukawa couplings. In this process, one lepton coming from the right-handed decay could be soft enough can be …
I argue that LHC may shed light on the nature of neutrino mass through the probe of the seesaw mechanism. The smoking gun signature is lepton number violation through the production of same sign lepton pairs, a collider analogy of the neutrinoless double beta decay. I discuss this in the context of L-R symmetric theories, which led originally to neutrino mass and the seesaw mechanism. A W_R gauge boson with a mass in a few TeV region could easily dominate neutrinoless double beta decay, and its discovery at LHC would have spectacular signatures of parity restoration and lepton number violation…
We study the implications of the global $U(1)_R$ symmetry present in minimal lepton flavor violating implementations of the seesaw mechanism for neutrino masses. Our discussion is done in the context of explicit minimal type-I seesaw scenarios, where depending on the R-charge assignment different models can be constructed. We study the charged lepton flavor violating phenomenology of a concrete realization paying special attention to $μ\to eγ$ and $μ\to 3e$.
There exist tree-level generalizations of the Type-I and Type-III seesaw mechanisms that realize neutrino mass via low-energy effective operators with d>5. However, these generalizations also give radiative masses that can dominate the seesaw masses in regions of parameter space --- i.e. they are not purely seesaw models, nor are they purely radiative models, but instead they are something in between. A recent work detailed the remaining minimal models of this type. Here we study the remaining model with d=9 and investigate the collider phenomenology of the exotic quadruplet fermions it predic…
In a version of the 3-3-1 model proposed by Duong and Ma the introduction of the scalar sextet for giving mass to the charged leptons is avoided by adding a singlet charged lepton. We show that in this case the $τ$ lepton gains mass through a seesaw--like mechanism. Besides we show how to generate neutrino masses at the tree and at the 1-loop level with the respective Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata leptonic mixing matrices.
Within low-scale seesaw mechanisms, such as the inverse and linear seesaw, one expects (i) potentially large lepton flavor violation (LFV) and (ii) sizeable non-standard neutrino interactions (NSI). We consider the interplay between the magnitude of non-unitarity effects in the lepton mixing matrix, and the constraints that follow from LFV searches in the laboratory. We find that NSI parameters can be sizeable, up to percent level in some cases, while LFV rates, such as that for μ-> e γ, lie within current limits, including the recent one set by the MEG collaboration. As a result the upcoming …
In minimal supersymmetric seesaw models, the contribution to lepton flavour violation from Z-penguins is usually negligible. In this study, we consider the supersymmetric inverse seesaw and show that, in this case, the Z-penguin contribution dominates in several lepton flavour violating observables due to the low scale of the inverse seesaw mechanism. Among the observables considered, we find that the most constraining one is the muon to electron conversion rate which is already restricting the otherwise allowed parameter space of the model. Moreover, in this framework, the Z-penguins exhibit …
In leptogenesis scenario, the decays of heavy Majorana neutrinos generate lepton family asymmetries, $Y_e, Y_μ$ and $Y_τ$. They are sensitive to CP violating phases in seesaw models. The time evolution of the lepton family asymmetries are derived by solving Boltzmann equations. By taking a minimal seesaw model, we show how each family asymmetry varies with a CP violating phase. For instance, we find the case that the lepton asymmetry is dominated by $Y_μ$ or $Y_τ$ depending on the choice of the CP violating phase. We also find the case that the signs of lepton family asymmetries $Y_μ$ and $Y_τ…
We study the lepton electric dipole moments in the framework of the supersymmetric type II seesaw model where the exchange of heavy SU(2)_W triplets generates small neutrino masses. We show that the CP violating phase of the bilinear soft supersymmetry breaking term associated with the SU(2)_W triplets contributes to lepton electric dipole moments mainly through threshold corrections to the gaugino masses at the seesaw scale. As a consequence, the ratio of the electric dipole moments of the muon and the electron is the same as the ratio of their masses in a wide region of parameter space.
We calculate the contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of leptons in the type-I and type-III seesaw models. We show that, even if the scale of the new physics is pushed down to the electroweak scale, this contribution is not large enough to explain the measured discrepancy of the muon anomalous magnetic moment.
The non-unitarity effects in the leptonic flavor mixing are regarded as one of the generic features of the type-I seesaw model. Therefore, we explore these effects in the TeV-scale type-I seesaw model, and show that there exist non-trivial correlations among the non-unitarity parameters, stemming from the typical flavor structure of the low-scale seesaw model. In general, it follows from analytical discussions and numerical results that all the six non-unitarity parameters are related to three model parameters, while the widely studied parameters η_{eτ} and η_{μτ} cannot be phenomenologically …
We present a novel framework within the conformal inverse seesaw scheme allowing large lepton number violation while the neutrino mass formula is still governed by the low-scale inverse seesaw mechanism. This model includes new contributions to rare low-energy lepton number violating processes like neutrinoless double beta decay. We find that the lifetime for this rare process due to heavy sterile neutrinos can saturate current experimental limits. The characteristic collider signature of the present conformal inverse seesaw scheme includes, same-sign dilepton plus two jets and same-sign dilep…
We study the supersymmetric version of the type-II seesaw mechanism assuming minimal supergravity boundary conditions. We calculate branching ratios for lepton flavour violating (LFV) scalar tau decays, potentially observable at the LHC, as well as LFV decays at low energy, such as $l_i \to l_j + γ$ and compare their sensitivity to the unknown seesaw parameters. In the minimal case of only one triplet coupling to the standard model lepton doublets, ratios of LFV branching ratios can be related unambigously to neutrino oscillation parameters. We also discuss how measurements of soft SUSY breaki…
We present a general framework for models in which the lepton mixing matrix is the product of the maximal mixing matrix U_ω times a matrix constrained by a well-defined Z_2 symmetry. Our framework relies on neither supersymmetry nor non-renormalizable Lagrangians nor higher dimensions; it relies instead on the double seesaw mechanism and on the soft breaking of symmetries. The framework may be used to construct models for virtually all the lepton mixing matrices of the type mentioned above which have been proposed in the literature.
We propose a model for the vector-like lepton to explain the small muon mass by a seesaw mechanism, based on lepton-specific two Higgs doublet models with a local $U(1)'$ symmetry. There is no bare muon mass for a nonzero $U(1)'$ charge of the leptophilic Higgs doublet, so the physical muon mass is generated due to the mixing between the vector-like lepton and the muon after the leptophilic Higgs doublet and the dark Higgs get VEVs. In this scenario, the non-decoupling effects of the vector-like lepton give rise to leading contributions to the muon $g-2$, thanks to the light $Z'$ and the light…
In the context of a typical model for fermion mass matrices, possibly based on the horizontal U(2) symmetry, we explore the effect of the type II seesaw mechanism on lepton mixings. We find that the combined contribution of type I and type II terms is able to explain the large but not maximal 1-2 mixing and the near maximal 2-3 mixing, while the 1-3 mixing angle is predicted to be small.
Lepton flavor violating Higgs boson decays are studied within the context of seesaw models with Majorana massive neutrinos. Two models are considered: The SM-seesaw, with the Standard Model Particle content plus three right handed neutrinos, and the MSSM-seesaw, with the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model particle content plus three right handed neutrinos and their supersymmetric partners. The widths for these decays are derived from a full one-loop diagrammatic computation in both models, and they are analyzed numerically in terms of the seesaw parameters, namely, the Dirac and Majorana ma…
A previous short analysis of the seesaw mechanism, based on quark-lepton symmetry, experimental data and hierarchical neutrino spectrum, is enlarged to include small but not zero U_{e3}, inverted mass hierarchy, and the qualitative effect of Majorana phases. The structure of the heavy neutrino mass matrix obtained in several cases is discussed. We find two leading forms for this matrix. One is diagonal and stands at the unification scale or above. The other is off-diagonal and stands at the intermediate scale.
We provide an $A_4$ based flavor symmetric scenario to accommodate the inverse seesaw mechanism for explaining light neutrino masses and mixing. We find that the lepton mixing, in particular the tri-bimaximal mixing pattern and its deviation through nonzero $θ_{13}$, is originated solely from the flavor structure of the lepton number violating contribution of the neutral lepton mass matrix. Here we discuss in detail how a nonzero value of $θ_{13}$ is correlated with the other parameters in the framework and its impact on the Dirac CP phase $δ$. We also analyze the non-unitarity effects on lept…
We investigate the LHC discovery potential for electroweak scale heavy neutrino singlets (seesaw I), scalar triplets (seesaw II) and fermion triplets (seesaw III). For seesaw I we consider a heavy Majorana neutrino coupling to the electron or muon. For seesaw II we concentrate on the likely scenario where the new scalars decay to two leptons. For seesaw III we restrict ourselves to heavy Majorana fermion triplets decaying to light leptons plus gauge or Higgs bosons, which are dominant except for unnaturally small mixings. The possible signals are classified in terms of the charged lepton multi…
We study the possibility of generating non-zero reactor mixing angle $θ_{13}$ by perturbing the $μ-τ$ symmetric neutrino mass matrix. The leading order $μ-τ$ symmetric neutrino mass matrix originates from type I seesaw mechanism whereas the perturbations to $μ-τ$ symmetry originate from type II seesaw term. We consider four different realizations of $μ-τ$ symmetry: Bimaximal Mixing(BM), Tri-bimaximal Mixing (TBM), Hexagonal Mixing (HM) and Golden Ratio Mixing (GRM) all giving rise to $θ_{13} = 0, θ_{23} = \fracπ{4}$ but different non-zero values of solar mixing angle $θ_{12}$. We assume a mini…
In minimal supergravity (mSugra), the neutrino sector is related to the slepton sector by means of the renormalization group equations. This opens a door to indirectly test the neutrino sector via measurements at the LHC. Concretely, for the simplest seesaw type-I, we present the correlations between seesaw parameters and ratio of stau lepton flavour violating (LFV) branching ratios. We find some simple, extreme scenarios for the unknown right-handed parameters, where ratios of LFV rates correlate with neutrino oscillation parameters. On the other hand, we scan the mSugra parameter space, for …
We study the impact of the inverse seesaw mechanism on several low-energy flavour violating observables such as tau decaying to three muons in the context of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. As a consequence of the inverse seesaw, the contributions of the right-handed sneutrinos significantly enhance the Higgs-mediated penguin diagrams. We find that different flavour violating branching ratios can be enhanced by as much as two orders of magnitude. We also comment on the impact of the Higgs-mediated processes on the leptonic B-meson decays and on the Higgs flavour violating decays.
We study the impact of the inverse seesaw mechanism on several leptonic and hadronic low-energy flavour-violating observables in the context of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. Indeed, the contributions of the light right-handed sneutrinos from the inverse seesaw significantly enhance the Higgs-mediated penguin diagrams. We find that this can increase the different branching ratios by as much as two orders of magnitude.
We discuss a GUT realization of the supersymmetric triplet seesaw mechanism(recently proposed by us in hep-ph/0604083 and further analyzed in hep-ph/0607298) where the exchange of the heavy triplet states generates both neutrino masses and soft SUSY breaking terms.
