Using a plaquette formulation for lattice gauge models we describe monopoles of the three dimensional SU(2) theory which appear as configurations in the complete axial gauge and violate the continuum Bianchi identity. Furthemore we derive a dual formulation for the Wilson loop in arbitrary representation and calculate the form of the interaction between generated electric flux and monopoles in the region of a weak coupling relevant for the continuum limit. The effective theory which controls the interaction is of the sine-Gordon type model. The string tension is calculated within the semiclassical approximation.
In this series of three papers, we generalize the derivation of dual photons and monopoles by Polyakov, and Banks, Myerson and Kogut, to obtain approximative models of SU(2) lattice gauge theory. Our approach is based on stationary phase approximations. In this third article, we start from the plaquette representation of 3-dimensional SU(2) lattice gauge theory. By extending a work of Borisenko, Voloshin and Faber, we transform the expectation value of a Wilson loop into a path integral over a dual gluon field and monopole variables. The action contains the tree-level Coulomb interaction and a…
We study the heavy quark potential in the SU(2) positive plaquette model using monopoles in the maximum abelian gauge, and vortices. Monopoles give a quantitative description of the string tension. Vortices approximately reproduce the entire heavy quark potential.
Confinement via 't Hooft-Mandelstam monopoles is studied for the positive plaquette model in SU(2) lattice gauge theory. Positive plaquette model configurations are projected into the maximum abelian gauge and the magnetic current extracted. The resulting magnetic current is used to compute monopole contributions to Wilson loops and extract a monopole contribution to the string tension. As was previously found for the Wilson action, the monopole contribution to the string tension agrees with the string tension calculated directly from the SU(2) links. The fact that the positive plaquette model…
I evaluate S_{APQCD}, the exact action of Abelian projection QCD, using the microcanonical demon method. Starting with a trial action consisting of L=1, L=2, & L=3 LxL plaquettes plus a Smit-van-der-Sijs magnetic monopole ``mass'' operator, I show that coefficients of the L=2 and L=3 plaquettes vanish at all beta_{SU2}. In fact, at strong coupling S_{APQCD} is essentially the 1x1 compact QED action with beta_{U1}=beta_{SU2}/2. Beyond beta_{SU2}>=2, S_{APQCD} gains an exogenous negative 1x1x1 magnetic monopole mass shift. Note that my approach differs fundamentally from the Smit-van-der-Sijs ap…
A gauge invariant procedure for extracting combined SO(3)-Z2 monopoles in positive-plaquette SU(2) lattice gauge theory is shown. When these monopoles are eliminated through a constraint, the theory deconfines for all $β$ on $12^4$ and $20^4$ lattices even in the strong coupling limit, despite a rather strong average plaquette of around 0.64. This corresponds to an effective Wilson $β$ of 2.45, at which Wilson-action lattices would be far into the confining region. This suggests that Wilson-action confinement may be a strong-coupling lattice artifact; the continuum limit may not confine.
The effect of restricting the plaquette ($1\times 1$ Wilson loop) to be greater than a certain cutoff is studied. The action considered is the standard Wilson action with the addition of the plaquette restriction, which does not affect the continuum limit. A deconfining phase transition occurs as the cutoff is raised, even in the strong coupling limit. Abelian-projected monopoles in the maximal abelian gauge are strongly suppressed by the action restriction. Analysis of the steeply declining monopole loop distribution function indicates that for cutoffs $c > 0.5$, large monopole loops which ar…
We develop an analytical approach for studying lattice gauge theories within the plaquette representation where the plaquette matrices play the role of the fundamental degrees of freedom. We start from the original Batrouni formulation and show how it can be modified in such a way that each non-abelian Bianchi identity contains only two connectors instead of four. In addition, we include dynamical fermions in the plaquette formulation. Using this representation we construct the low-temperature perturbative expansion for U(1) and SU(N) models and discuss its uniformity in the volume. The final …
We show that the scenario of vortex induced confinement of center--projected SU(2) lattice gauge theory is not necessarily in conflict with the findings in the positive plaquette model.
In this series of three papers, we generalize the derivation of dual photons and monopoles by Polyakov, and Banks, Myerson and Kogut, to obtain approximative models of SU(2) lattice gauge theory. The papers take three different representations as their starting points: the representation as a BF Yang-Mills theory, the spin foam representation and the plaquette representation. The derivations are based on stationary phase approximations. In this first article, we cast 3- and 4-dimensional SU(2) lattice gauge theory in the form of a lattice BF Yang-Mills theory. In several steps, the expectation…
We introduce a gauge invariant definition of a monopole on the lattice. The construction is based on the observation that for each Wilson loop there exists an extra U(1) group which leaves the loop invariant. Since the lattice formulation utilizes the language of Wilson loops, the definition of the monopole charge in terms of this plaquette dependent U(1) is gauge invariant. The explicit construction of gauge invariant monopoles is presented both in continuum and on the lattice.
We develop an analytical approach for non-abelian gauge models within the plaquette representation where the plaquette matrices play the role of the fundamental degrees of freedom. We start from the original Batrouni formulation and show how it can be modified in such a way that each non-abelian Bianchi identity contains two connectors instead of four. Using this representation we construct the low-temperature expansion for U(1) and SU(N) models on a finite lattice and discuss its uniformity in the volume. Next, we derive a dual representation for the 't Hooft loop in the SU(2) model and descr…
We examine the occurance of Z(2) and SO(3) vorticies and monopole distributions in the neighborhood of Wilson loops. We use the Tomboulis formulation, equivalent to the Wilson action, in which the links are invariant under Z(2) transformations and new plaquette variables carry the Z(2) degrees of freedom. This gives new gauge invariant observables to help gain insight into the area law and structure of the flux tube.
By numerical calculations we show that the abelian monopole currents are locally correlated with the density of SU(2) lattice action. The correlations are larger by the order of magnitude in the maximal abelian projection than in the projections which correspond to the diagonalization of Polyakov line and to the diagonalization of the plaquette. These facts show that (at least) in the maximal abelian projection the monopoles are the physical objects, they carry the SU(2) action. The larger value of β, the larger the relative action carried by monopole. Calculations on the asymmetric lattice sh…
The structure of centre vortices in SU(3) gauge-field configurations is examined through modern visualization techniques. Centre vortices are identified through gauge transformations maximizing the centre of the gauge group. Focusing on the thin vortices identified by Wilson loops having a non-trivial centre phase, the vortex structure is illustrated through renderings of oriented spatial plaquettes. Time oriented plaquettes are illustrated by identifying spatial links associated with these non-trivial plaquettes. The results illustrate an important role for the branching of SU(3) centre vorti…
We probe for operators occurring in the APQCD(``abelian-projected QCD'') action by evaluating abelian-projected $1$-plaquette spectral densities in pure gauge $SU(3)$ fixed to maximal abelian gauge. Couplings $B_{APQCD}(q,L)$ are extracted from the spectral densities for each representation $q$, $L\times L$ plaquette. While APQCD is dominated by a $q=L=1$ resonance, we also find evidence for weakly coupled $L=2$ plaquettes. Moreover, since $B_{APQCD}(1,1) > B_{QED}(1,1)$ even if $β_{QED} > β_c$, $L>1$ plaquettes must be significant since APQCD is confining.
In this paper we begin on a new lattice formulation of the non-linear change of variables called the Cho--Faddeev--Niemi decomposition in SU(2) Yang-Mills theory. This is a compact lattice formulation improving the non-compact lattice formulation proposed in our previous paper. Based on this formulation, we propose a new gauge-invariant definition of the magnetic monopole current which guarantees the magnetic charge quantization and reproduces the conventional magnetic-current density obtained in the Abelian projection based on the DeGrand--Toussaint method. Finally, we demonstrate the magneti…
We show that in the spin-network basis it is possible to compute the matrix elements of any given operator of the Hamiltonian formulation of Lattice Gauge Theory (LGT). We give the explicit calculation for the case of the plaquette operator.
We investigate the phase diagram of the compact $U(1)$ lattice gauge theory in four dimensions using a non-standard action which is invariant under continuous deformations of the plaquette angles. Just as for the Wilson action, we find a weakly first order transition, separating a confining phase where magnetic monopoles condense, and a Coulomb phase where monopoles are dilute. We also find a third phase where monopoles are completely absent. The topological action offers an algorithmic advantage for the computation of the free energy.
A projection (gauge) independent formulation of the monopole dominance, discovered in lattice QCD for the maximal abelian projection, is given. A new dynamical abelian projection of continuum QCD, which does not rely on any explicit gauge condition imposed on gauge fields, is proposed. Under the assumption that the results of numerical simulations holds in the continuum limit, the monopole dominance is proved for the dynamical abelian projection. The latter enables us to develop an effective scalar field theory for dominant (monopole) configurations of gauge fields. The approach is manifestly …
We investigate universality, scaling, the beta-function and the topological charge in the positive plaquette model for SU(2) lattice gauge theory. Comparing physical quantities, like the critical temperature, the string tension, glueball masses, and their ratios, we explore the effect of a complete suppression of a certain lattice artifact, namely the negative plaquettes, for SU(2) lattice gauge theory. Our result is that this modification does not change the continuum limit, i.e., the universality class. The positive plaquette model and the standard Wilson formulation describe the same physic…
We review recent developments in understanding the physics of the magnetic monopoles in unbroken non-Abelian gauge theories. Since numerical data on the monopoles are accumulated in lattice simulations, the continuum theory is understood as the limiting case of the lattice formulation. In this review, written for a memorial volume dedicated to the memory of Academician A.B. Migdal, we emphasize physical effects related to the monopoles. In particular, we discuss the monopole-antimonopole potential at short and larger distances as well as a dual formulation of the gluodynamics, relevant to the …
We study the +/- J random-plaquette Z_2 gauge model (RPGM) in three spatial dimensions, a three-dimensional analog of the two-dimensional +/- J random-bond Ising model (RBIM). The model is a pure Z_2 gauge theory in which randomly chosen plaquettes (occuring with concentration p) have couplings with the ``wrong sign'' so that magnetic flux is energetically favored on these plaquettes. Excitations of the model are one-dimensional ``flux tubes'' that terminate at ``magnetic monopoles.'' Electric confinement can be driven by thermal fluctuations of the flux tubes, by the quenched background of ma…
The dual form of the massless Schwinger model on the lattice overcomes the complex action problems from two sources: a topological term, as well as non-zero chemical potential, making these physically interesting cases accessible to Monte Carlo simulations. The partition function is represented as a sum over fermion loops, dimers and plaquette-surfaces such that all contributions are real and positive. However, these new variables constitute a highly constrained system and suitable update strategies have to be developed. In this exploratory study we present an approach based on locally growing…
We consider gluodynamics in case when both color and magnetic charges are present. We discuss first short distance physics, where only the fundamental |Q|=1 monopoles introduced via the `t Hooft loop can be considered consistently. We show that at short distances the external monopoles interact as pure Abelian objects. This result can be reproduced by a Zwanziger-type Lagrangian with an Abelian dual gluon. We introduce also an effective dual gluodynamics which might be a valid approximation at distances where the monopoles |Q|=2 can be considered as point-like as well. Assuming the monopole co…
We give a short review of recently obtained results on a new lattice formulation of the non-linear change of variables which was once called the Cho--Faddeev--Niemi decomposition in SU(2) Yang-Mills theory. Based on this formulation, we proposed a new gauge-invariant definition of the magnetic monopole current which guarantees the magnetic charge quantization. We also demonstrated the magnetic monopole dominance in the string tension in SU(2) Yang-Mills theory on a lattice. Our formulation enables one to reproduce in the gauge-invariant way remarkable results obtained so far only in the Maxima…
We calculate the perturbative value of the Free Energy in Lattice QCD in three dimensions, up to three loops. Our calculation is performed using the Wilson formulation for gluons in SU(N) gauge theories. The Free Energy is directly related to the average plaquette. To carry out the calculation, we compute the coefficients involved in the perturbative expansion of the Free Energy up to three loops, using an automated set of procedures developed by us in Mathematica. The dependence on N is shown explicitly in our results. For purposes of comparison, we also present the individual contributions f…
We investigate several properties of Ginsparg-Wilson fermion on fuzzy 2-sphere. We first examine chiral anomaly up to the second order of the gauge field and show that it is indeed reduced to the correct form of the Chern character in the commutative limit. Next we study topologically non-trivial gauge configurations and their topological charges. We investigate 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole type configuration on fuzzy 2-sphere and show that it has the correct commutative limit. We also consider more general configurations in our formulation.
We investigate the adjoint SU(2) lattice gauge theory in 3+1 dimensions with the Wilson plaquette action modified by a Z(2) monopole suppression term. For the zero-twist sector we report indications for the existence of a finite temperature effect decoupled from the unphysical bulk transitions.
The type of the vacuum is studied numerically in the maximally Abelian (MA) gauge and in the Landau (LA) gauge of SU(2) gluodynamics. The type of the vacuum is determined by a ratio between the dual coherence and the dual penetration lengths. The dual penetration length is determined from correlations between Wilson loops and electric fields in both gauges. The dual coherence length is found from correlations between Wilson loops and dimension-2 operators both in the MA and the LA gauges. This determination of the coherence length is supported by theoretical and numerical observation that the …
We construct canonical transformations to reformulate SU(N) Kogut-Susskind lattice gauge theory in terms of a set of fundamental loop & string flux operators along with their canonically conjugate loop & string electric fields. We show that as a consequence of SU(N) Gauss laws all SU(N) string degrees of freedom become cyclic and decouple from the physical Hilbert space ${\cal H}^p$. The canonical relations between the initial SU(N) link operators and the final SU(N) loop & string operators over the entire lattice are worked out in a self consistent manner. The Kogut-Susskind Hamiltonian rewri…
The adjoint SU(2) lattice gauge theory in 3+1 dimensions with the Wilson plaquette action modified by a Z(2) monopole suppression term is reinvestigated with special emphasis on the existence of a finite-temperature phase transition decoupling from the well-known bulk transitions.
We consider the pure Yang-Mills relativistic quantum field theory in an imaginary time functional integral formulation. The gauge group is taken to be $\mathcal G = \mathrm U(N)$. We use a lattice ultraviolet regularization, starting with the model defined on a finite hypercubic lattice $Λ\subset a\mathbb Z^d$, $d = 2,3,4$, with lattice spacing $a\in (0,1]$ and $L\in\mathbb N$ sites on a side. The Wilson partition function is used where the action is a sum over four lattice bond variables of gauge-invariant plaquette (lattice minimal squares) actions with a prefactor $a^{d-4}/g^2$, where we ta…
We study properties of the compact $~4D~$ $U(1)$ lattice gauge theory with monopoles {\it removed}. Employing Monte Carlo simulations we calculate correlators of scalar, vector and tensor operators at zero and nonzero momenta $~\vec{p}~$. We confirm that the theory without monopoles has no phase transition, at least, in the interval $~0 < β\leq 2~$. There the photon becomes massless and fits the lattice free field theory dispersion relation very well. The energies of the $~0^{++}~$, $~1^{+-}~$ and $~2^{++}~$ states show a rather weak dependence on the coupling in the interval of $~β~$ investig…
We study the phase transition in the abelian lattice gauge theory using the Wilson-Polyakov line as the order parameter. The Wilson-Polyakov line remains very small at strong coupling and becomes non-zero at weak coupling, signalling a confinement to deconfinement phase transition. The decondensation of monopole loops is responsible for this phase transition. A finite size scaling analysis of the susceptibility of the Wilson line gives a ratio for $γ/ν$ which is quite close to the corresponding value in the 3-d planar model. A scaling behaviour for the monopole loop distribution function is al…
Assuming the monopole dominance, that has been proved in the lattice gluodynamics, to hold in the continuum limit, we develop an effective scalar field theory for QCD at large distances to describe confinement. The approach is based on a gauge (or projection) independent formulation of the monopole dominance and manifestly Lorentz invariant.
We show that if actions more general than the usual simple plaquette action ($\sim F_{μν}^2$) are considered, then compact $U(1)$ {\sl pure} gauge theory in three Euclidean dimensions can have two phases. Both phases are confining phases, however in one phase the monopole condensate spontaneously `magnetizes'. For a certain range of parameters the phase transition is continuous, allowing the definition of a strong coupling continuum limit. We note that these observations have relevance to the `fictitious' gauge field theories of strongly correlated electron systems, such as those describing hi…
We present a high statistics analysis of the pure gauge compact U(1) lattice theory using the the world-sheet or Lagrangian loop representation. We have applied a simulation method that deals directly with (gauge invariant) integer variables on plaquettes. As a result we get a significant amelioration of the simulation that allows to work with large lattices avoiding the metaestability problems that appear using the standard Wilson formulation.
We study the pure gauge model on a lattice manifold with trivial fundamental homotopy group, homotopically equivalent to an $S_4$. Monopole loops may fluctuate freely on that lattice without restrictions due to the boundary conditions. For the original Wilson action on the hypertorus there is an established two-state signal in energy distribution functions which disappears for the new geometry. Our finite size scaling analysis suggests stringent upper bounds on possible discontinuities in the plaquette action. However, no consistent asymptotic finite size scaling behaviour is observed.
We have continued our systematic investigations of the numerical simulations of lattice gauge theories in the dual formulation. These include: i) a more practical implementation of the quasi-local updating technique, ii) a thorough investigation of the sign problem, iii) issues related to the ergodicity of the various update algorithms, iv) a novel way of measuring conventional observables like plaquette in the dual formalism and v) investigations of thermalisation. While the dual formulation holds out a lot of promises in principle, there are still some ways to go before it can be made into a…
We propose a method for the determination of magnetic monopole currents in non-Abelian gauge theories which does not need a projection to Abelian degrees of freedom. With this definition we are able to determine the distribution of magnetic currents and electric fields for the gluonic flux tube between a pair of static charges. Further we check the validity of the Gauss law and the dual London equation in a gauge invariant formulation.
We study whether broken dual gauge symmetry, as detected by a monopole order parameter introduced by the Pisa group, is necessarily associated with the confinement phase of a lattice gauge theory. We find a number of examples, including SU(2) gauge-Higgs theory, mixed fundamental-adjoint SU(2) gauge theory, and pure SU(5) gauge theory, which appear to indicate a dual gauge symmetry transition in the absence of a transition to or from a confined phase. While these results are not necessarily fatal to the dual superconductor hypothesis, they may pose some problems of interpretation for the prese…
For hamiltonian lattice gauge theory, we introduce the matrix product anzats inspired from density matrix renormalization group. In this method, wavefunction of the target state is assumed to be a product of finite matrices. As a result, the energy becomes a simple function of the matrices, which can be evaluated using a computer. The minimum of the energy function corresponds to the vacuum state. We show that the S=1/2 Heisenberg chain model are well described with the ansatz. The method is also applied to the two-dimensional S=1/2 Heisenberg and U(1) plaquette chain models.
We derive an exact representation of the massless Schwinger model on the lattice in terms of dual variables which are configurations of loops, dimers and plaquette occupation numbers. When expressed with the dual variables the partition sum has only real and positive terms also when a chemical potential or a topological term are added -- situations where the conventional representation has a complex action problem. The dual representation allows for Monte Carlo simulations without restrictions on the values of the chemical potential or the vacuum angle.
By making use of the background field method, we derive a novel reformulation of the Yang-Mills theory which was proposed recently by the author to derive quark confinement in QCD. This reformulation identifies the Yang-Mills theory with a deformation of a topological quantum field theory. The relevant background is given by the topologically non-trivial field configuration, especially, the topological soliton which can be identified with the magnetic monopole current in four dimensions. We argue that the gauge fixing term becomes dynamical and that the gluon mass generation takes place by a s…
In a Euclidean path integral formulation of gauge theory and quantum mechanics, the theta-term induces a sign problem, and relatedly, a complex phase for the fugacity of topological defects; whereas in Minkowskian formulation, it induces a topological (geometric) phase multiplying ordinary path-amplitudes. In an SU(2) Yang-Mills theory which admits a semi-classical limit, we show that the complex fugacity generates interference between Euclidean path histories, i.e., monopole-instanton events, and radically alters the vacuum structure. At theta=0, a mass gap is due to the monopole-instanton pl…
We present the first implementation of the Cho--Faddeev--Niemi decomposition of the SU(2) Yang-Mills field on a lattice. Our construction retains the color symmetry (global SU(2) gauge invariance) even after a new type of Maximally Abelian gauge, as explicitly demonstrated by numerical simulations. Moreover, we propose a gauge-invariant definition of the magnetic monopole current using this formulation and compare the new definition with the conventional one by DeGrand and Toussaint to exhibit its validity.
We present a novel finite-matrix formulation of gauge theories on a non-commutative torus. Unlike the previous formulation based on a map from a square matrix to a field on a discretized torus with periodic boundary conditions, our formulation is based on the algebraic characterization of the configuration space. This enables us to describe the twisted boundary conditions in terms of finite matrices and hence to realize the Morita equivalence at a fully regularized level. Matter fields in the fundamental representation turn out to be represented by rectangular matrices for twisted boundary con…
Topological configurations, monopoles and vortices, successfully describe quark confinement and the spontaneous breakdown of chiral symmetry. Despite their infinite action, these configurations are relevant due to a subtle cancellation between action and entropy. A natural explanation for this intrinsic fine-tuning is that smooth low action configurations exist which confine and which appear as singular topological objects in certain gauges. To reveal these confining semi-classical configurations, a new cooling method is proposed which largely reduces the action while preserving the asymptotic…
We make a numerical study of the finite temperature properties of the SO(3) lattice gauge theory. As its symmetry properties are quite different from those of the SU(2) LGT, a different set of observables have to be considered in this model. We study several observables, such as, the plaquette square, the Z(2) monopole density, the fundamental and adjoint Wilson line, and the tiled Wilson line correlation function. Our simulations show that the Z(2) monopoles condense at strong coupling just as in the bulk system. This transition is seen at approximately the same location as in the bulk system…
The infra-red properties of three-dimensional abelian lattice gauge theory are known to be governed by a neutral plasma of magnetic monopole excitations. We address the fate of these monopoles in the presence of light dynamical fermions, using a lattice formulation of compact QED_3 with N_f=4 fermion flavors supplemented by a four-fermi contact term permitting numerical Monte Carlo simulations in the chiral limit. Our data hint at a restoration of chiral symmetry above a critical value of the (inverse) coupling beta. By performing simulations in a sector of non-vanishing magnetic charge, we ar…
We combine the microcanonical formulation of lattice gauge theories (LGTs) developed by Callaway and the microcanonical inflection point analysis (MIPA) proposed by Bachmann et al. to achieve a systematic characterization of phase transitions (PTs) in U(1) lattice electrodynamics. Besides identifying the well-known deconfinement PT (DPT) due to the neutral pair dissolution, which we classify as a first-order PT, we unequivocally detect three higher-order PTs. According to MIPA, we observe two independent third-order PTs in the confined phase; instead, in the deconfined (Coulomb) phase, we obse…
We discuss a particular lattice discretization of abelian gauge theories in arbitrary dimensions. The construction is based on gauging the center symmetry of a non-compact abelian gauge theory, which results in a Villain type action. We show that this construction has several benefits over the conventional $U(1)$ lattice gauge theory construction, such as electric-magnetic duality, natural coupling of the theory to magnetically charged matter in four dimensions, complete control over the monopoles and their charges in three dimensions and a natural $θ$-term in two dimensions. Moreover we show …
We show that the hypothesis of abelian dominance allows QCD-monopoles to preserve the topological feature of the QCD vacuum within SU(2) lattice gauge theory. An analytical study is made to find the relationship between the topological charge and QCD-monopoles in the lattice formulation. The topological charge is explicitly represented in terms of the monopole current and the abelian component of gauge fields in the abelian dominated system. We numerically examine the relation and demonstrate the abelian dominance in the topological structure by using Monte Carlo simulation.
The screening of magnetic Z(N)-monopoles and the associated screening length in SU(N) gauge theories are analyzed theoretically, and computed numerically in the 3d SU(2) theory. The nature of the screening excitations as well as their mass have so far remained inconclusive in the literature. Here we show that the screening mass is identical to the lowest J^{PC}_R=0^{++}_+ excitation of the Yang-Mills Hamiltonian with one compact direction with period 1/T, the subscript R referring to parity in this direction. We extend the continuum formulation to one on the lattice, and determine the transfer…
Quantum electrodynamics in a (2+1)-dimensional space-time has been object of studies both as effective theory for the pseudogap phase of high-T_c superconductors and for the theoretical investigation of mechanisms of confinement in presence of matter fields. We discretize the theory using both compact and noncompact formulations, analyze the behavior of the chiral condensate and of the monopole density and compare them. Finally we draw some conclusions about the possible equivalence of the two lattice formulations.
Quantum technologies offer the prospect to efficiently simulate sign-problem afflicted regimes in lattice field theory, such as the presence of topological terms, chemical potentials, and out-of-equilibrium dynamics. In this work, we derive the (3+1)D topological $θ$-term for Abelian and non-Abelian lattice gauge theories in the Hamiltonian formulation, paving the way towards Hamiltonian-based simulations of such terms on quantum and classical computers. We further study numerically the zero-temperature phase structure of a (3+1)D U(1) lattice gauge theory with the $θ$-term via exact diagonali…
We review the recent results in the physics of the magnetic monopoles in gluodynamics and a dual formulation of non-Abelian theories, relevant to the physics of the confinement. It occurs that the dual gluon is a U(1) gauge boson, despite of the fact that usual gluons are non-Abelian. The effective infrared Lagrangian for gluodynamics is suggested which leads to the Casimir scaling of the string tension for quarks in various representations. We also show that the results of the calculations in lattice gauge theories confirm our theoretical predictions.
