A complicating factor in unraveling the theory of high-temperature (high-Tc) superconductivity is the presence of a "pseudogap" in the density of states, whose origin has been debated since its discovery [1]. Some believe the pseudogap is a broken symmetry state distinct from superconductivity [2-4], while others believe it arises from short-range correlations without symmetry breaking [5,6]. A number of broken symmetries have been imaged and identified with the pseudogap state [7,8], but it remains crucial to disentangle any electronic symmetry breaking from pre-existing structural symmetry of the crystal. We use scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) to observe an orthorhombic structural distortion across the cuprate superconducting Bi2Sr2Can-1CunO2n+4+x (BSCCO) family tree, which breaks two-dimensional inversion symmetry in the surface BiO layer. Although this inversion symmetry breaking structure can impact electronic measurements, we show from its insensitivity to temperature, magnetic field, and doping, that it cannot be the long-sought pseudogap state. To detect this picometer-scale variation in lattice structure, we have implemented a new algorithm which will serve as a powerful tool in the search for broken symmetry electronic states in cuprates, as well as in other materials.
A critical comparison is made between the ARPES-derived spectral function and STM studies of Friedel-like oscillations in Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+delta} (Bi2212). The data can be made approximately consistent, provided that (a) the elastic scattering seen in ARPES is predominantly small-angle scattering and (b) the `peak' feature seen in ARPES is really a dispersive `bright spot', smeared into a line by limited energy resolution; these are the `bright spots' which control the quasiparticle interferences. However, there is no indication of bilayer splitting in the STM data.
The study of bosonic modes that couple to the charge carriers is a key element in understanding superconductivity. Lee et al. have used atomic-resolution scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STM) in an attempt to extract the spectrum of of these modes in the high temperature superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d and they found a mode whose frequency did not depend on doping but changed on 16O to 18O isotopic substitution leading them to suggest a role for lattice modes (phonons). A careful examination of their published data reveals a weaker but distinct feature that has all the characteristics of the ma…
We discuss a wealth of data from various types of experiments which together suggest that the superconducting state of optimally to overdoped BSCCO-2212 can be well-described by the BCS theory with a d-wave gap together with small-angle scattering from out-of-plane defects. These include scanning tunnelling Fourier transform spectroscopy observation of nanoscale inhomogeneity in the local gap edge position, the narrowing of the antinodal ARPES spectrum when BSCCO becomes superconducting, as well as the behavior of the microwave and thermal conductivities. We suggest that the large amount of sm…
We consider the screening of an impurity moment in a d-wave superconductor under the influence of a Zeeman magnetic field. Using the Numerical Renormalization Group technique, we investigate the resulting pseudogap Kondo problem, in particular the field-induced crossover behavior in the vicinity of the zero-field boundary quantum phase transition. The impurity spectral function and the resulting changes in the local host density of states are calculated, giving specific predictions for high-field STM measurements on impurity-doped cuprates.
An attempt is made at reconciling the results of the prime experiments on the high temperature superconducting cuprates from Loram et al. and Davis et al. relating to electronic specific heat and to energy-resolved scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM), respectively, over the question of electronic inhomogeneity. I see the latter, at the appropriate level, as being essential to the evolution of HTSC in these materials, and try to bring into alignment the above key works, not only with each other, but with a wealth of related work. This is undertaken around a negative-U scenario long advocated b…
We present a phenomenological model that describes the low energy electronic structure of the cuprate high temperature superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x as observed by Spectroscopic Imagining Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (SI-STM). Our model is based on observations from Quasiparticle Interference (QPI) measurements and Local Density of States (LDOS) measurements that span a range of hole densities from critical doping, p~0.19, to extremely underdoped, p~0.06. The model presented below unifies the spectral density of states observed in QPI studies with that of the LDOS. In unifying these two sepa…
Motivated by the recent scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and neutron scattering experiments, we investigate various charge density wave orders coexisting with superconductivity in the cuprate superconductors. The explicit expressions of the local density of states and its Fourier component at the ordering wavevector for the weak charge modulations are derived. It is shown that the STM experiments in $Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+δ}$ cannot be explained by a site- or bond-centered charge modulation alone, but agree well with the presence of the dimerization hopping and transverse pairing modulations. …
Motivated by the recent scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experiment [J. E. Hoffman, {\it et al.}, Science {\bf 297}, 1148 (2002)], we investigate the energy-dependent modulation induced by a weak and extended defect in a d-wave superconductor. The Fourier component of the local density of states (LDOS) is calculated up to the first order in the defect parameters. Our numerically obtained image maps together with the energy-dependent charge modulation wave vectors at different dopings exhibit the essential features as those measured by the experiment. We also predict new modulation wave vect…
We consider the problem of local tunneling into cuprate superconductors, combining model based calculations for the superconducting order parameter with wavefunction information obtained from first principles electronic structure. For some time it has been proposed that scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) spectra do not reflect the properties of the superconducting layer in the CuO$_2$ plane directly beneath the STM tip, but rather a weighted sum of spatially proximate states determined by the details of the tunneling process. These "filter" ideas have been countered with the argument that sim…
We show that the d-wave ordering in particle-hole channels, dubbed d-wave checkerboard order, possesses important physics that can sufficiently explain the scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) results in cuprates. A weak d-wave checkerboard order can effectively suppress the coherence peak in the single-particle spectrum while leaving the spectrum along the nodal direction almost unaffected. Simultaneously, it generates a Fermi arc with little dispersion around the nodal points at finite temperature that is consistent with the results of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) experim…
We show that the Zinc doping induced STM resonance in high-Tc cuprates is a zero mode - a d-wave monomer confined in the opposite sublattice of the Zinc site. We propose that the resonance come from the superconducting peak around $(π,0) $ as observed in ARPES experiments. It is predicted that the resonance should vanish in single layer $BSCCO_{2201}$ or in the vortex core of underdoped cuprate where the ARPES peak is absent. We argue that the STM result imply the ARPES peak around $(π,0) $ is the only coherent feature in the whole Brillouin zone.
We report that four properties of cuprates and their evolution with doping are consequences of simply counting four-site plaquettes arising from doping: (1) the universal Tc phase diagram (superconductivity between \approx0.05 and \approx0.27 doping per CuO2 plane, and optimal Tc at \approx0.16), (2) the universal doping dependence of the room-temperature thermopower, (3) the superconducting neutron spin resonance peak (the "41 meV peak"), and (4) the dispersionless scanning tunneling conductance incommensurability. Properties (1), (3), and (4) are explained with no adjustable parameters, and …
Recent scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) studies on Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi-2212) revealed the presence of severe inhomogeneity with length scale $L_0 \approx ξ_0$, the coherence length. Other studies have been interpreted in terms of mesoscale or nanoscale phase segregation. Here we analyze heat capacity and NMR data on Bi-2212 and (Y,Ca)Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ and find no evidence for phase segregation or gross inhomogeneity. For Bi-2212 the coherence scale $L_0$ increases with doping from 5 to 17$ξ_0$ and the hole density inhomogeneity decreases from 0.028 to 0.005 holes/Cu. We c…
Fingerprint of the electron-pocket in cuprates has been obtained only in numerous magneto-transport measurements, but its absence in spectroscopic observations pose a long-standing mystery. We develop a theoretical tool to provide ways to detect electron-pockets via numerous spectroscopies including scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) spectra, inelastic neutron scattering (INS), and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). We show that the quasiparticle-interference (QPI) pattern, measured by STM, shows additional 7 ${\bm q}$ vectors associated with the scattering on the electron-poc…
One of the key motivations for the development of atomically resolved spectroscopic imaging STM (SI-STM) has been to probe the electronic structure of cuprate high temperature superconductors. In both the d-wave superconducting (dSC) and the pseudogap (PG) phases of underdoped cuprates, two distinct classes of electronic states are observed using SI-STM. The first class consists of the dispersive Bogoliubov quasiparticles of a homogeneous d-wave superconductor. These are detected below a lower energy scale |E|=Δ0 and only upon a momentum space (k-space) arc which terminates near the lines conn…
In two-dimensional lattices the electronic levels are unevenly spaced, and the density of states (DOS) displays a logarithmic divergence known as the Van Hove singularity (VHS). This is the case in particular for the layered cuprate superconductors. The scanning tunneling microscope (STM) probes the DOS, and is therefore the ideal tool to observe the VHS. No STM study of cuprate superconductors has reported such an observation so far giving rise to a debate about the possibility of observing directly the normal state DOS in the tunneling spectra. In this study, we show for the first time that …
We calculate scattering interference patterns for various electronic states proposed for the pseudogap regime of the cuprate superconductors. The scattering interference models all produce patterns whose wavelength changes as a function of energy, in contradiction to the energy-independent wavelength seen by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experiments in the pseudogap state. This suggests that the patterns seen in STM local density of states measurements are not due to scattering interference, but are rather the result of some form of ordering.
Theory of scanning tunneling spectroscopy of low energy quasiparticle (QP) states in vortex lattices of d-wave superconductors is developed taking account of the effects caused by an extremely large extension of QP wavefunctions in the nodal directions and the band structure in the QP spectrum. The oscillatory structures in STM spectra, which correspond to van Hove singularities are analysed. Theoretical calculations carried out for finite temperatures and scattering rates are compared with recent experimental data for high temperature cuprates.
Granularity, anisotropy, local lattice distortions and their dependence on dopant concentration appear to be present in all cuprate superconductors, interwoven with the microscopic mechanisms responsible for superconductivity. Here we review anisotropy and penetration depth measurements to reassess the evidence for granularity, as revealed by the notorious rounded phase transition, the evidence for the three dimensional nature of superconductivity, uncovered by the doping dependence of transition temperature and anisotropy, and to reassess the relevance of the electron-lattice coupling, emergi…
We investigate a model where superconducting electrons are coupled to a frequency dependent charge-density wave (CDW) order parameter Delta(w). Our approach can reconcile the simultaneous existence of low energy Bogoljubov quasiparticles and high energy electronic order as observed in scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experiments. The theory accounts for the contrast reversal in the STM spectra between positive and negative bias observed above the pairing gap. An intrinsic relation between scattering rate and inhomogeneities follows naturally.
We derive the shape of the high-energy features due to a weakly coupled boson in cuprate superconductors, as seen experimentally in Bi_2 Sr_2 Ca_1 Cu_2 O_8+x (BSCCO) by Lee et al. [Nature (London) 442, 546 (2006)]. A simplified model is used of d-wave Bogoliubov quasiparticles coupled to Einstein oscillators with a momentum-independent electron-boson coupling and an analytic fitting form is derived, which allows us (a) to extract the boson mode's frequency and (b) to estimate the electron-boson coupling strength. We further calculate the maximum possible superconducting gap due to an Einstein …
We propose a model for a spatially modulated collective state of superconducting cuprates in which the electronic properties vary locally in space. In this model the regions of higher hole density (called stripes) are described as Luttinger liquids and the regions of lower density (antiferromagnetic ladders) as an interacting bosonic gas of d$_{x^2-y^2}$ hole pairs. We show that the transition to the superconducting state is topological and driven by decay processes among these elementary excitations in the presence of vibrations.
We present a model for the combined nematic and `smectic' or stripe-like orders seen in recent scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experiments in cuprates. We model the stripe order as an electronic charge density wave with associated Peierls distortion -- a `Pomeranchuk wave'. Disorder restricts this primary order to nanoscale domains, while secondary coupling to strain generates nematic order with considerably longer range.
Motivated by recent neutron scattering and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experiments on cuprate superconductors, we discuss charge-ordered states, in particular with two-dimensional charge modulation patterns, co-existing with superconductivity. We extend previous studies of a large-N mean-field formulation of the t-J model. In addition to bond-centered superconducting stripe states at low doping, we find checkerboard-modulated superconducting states which are favorable in an intermediate doping interval. We also analyze the energy dependence of the Fourier component of the local density…
This article presents our perspective on STM measurements by Hoffman et al. (cond-mat/0201348) of the vortex lattice in BSCCO. We discuss implications of these measurements for various theories of the cuprate superconductors.
We argue the coherent part of the spectral weight always contribute symmetrically to the STM spectrum at sufficiently low energy and the tunneling asymmetry is a manifestation of the incoherent part of the electron spectrum. By subtracting the particle side spectrum from the hole side spectrum in the published STM data of Pan \textit{et al} on $BSCCO_{2212}(T_{c}=84K)$, we find the difference spectrum show a well defined gap structure at 25 meV. We argue this gap may represent a new energy scale of the system, namely the energy scale for spin-charge recombination in this system.
We calculate electronic single-particle properties of short-range ordered stripe states, using Monte-Carlo simulations of collective charge-density wave (CDW) order parameters coupled to fermions on a 2d square lattice. For superconducting bond-centered stripes with a d-wave form factor, we find a valence-bond "glass" which coexists with low-energy quasiparticles featuring interference phenomena, in agreement with recent scanning-tunneling-microscopy (STM) measurements on underdoped BSCCO and CaNaCuOCl. Together with earlier work, our calculations provide a link between CDW features seen in ST…
In this paper we explore the behavior of the quasi-particle interference pattern (QPI) of scanning tunneling microscopy as a function of temperature, $T$. After insuring a minimal consistency with photoemission, we find that the QPI pattern is profoundly sensitive to quasi-particle coherence and that it manifests two energy gap scales. The nearly dispersionless QPI pattern above $T_c$ is consistent with data on moderately underdoped cuprates. To illustrate the important two energy scale physics we present predictions of the QPI--inferred energy gaps as a function of $T$ for future experiments …
We use scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) to study magnetic Fe impurities intentionally doped into the high-temperature superconductor Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$Ca$_{2}$CuO$_{8+δ}$. Our spectroscopic measurements reveal that Fe impurities introduce low-lying resonances in the density of states at Ω$_{1}$ $\approx$ 4meV and Ω$_{2}$ $\approx$ 15 meV allowing us to determine that, despite having a large magnetic moment, potential scattering of quasiparticles by Fe impurities dominates magnetic scattering. In addition, using high-resolution spatial characterizations of the local density of states near and …
We study the spin-density wave (stripe) instability in lattices with mixed low-temperature orthorhombic (LTO) and low-temperature tetragonal (LTT) crystal symmetry. Within an explicit mean-field model it is shown how local LTT regions act as pinning centers for static stripe formation. We calculate the modulations in the local density of states near these local stripe regions and find that mainly the coherence peaks and the van Hove singularity (VHS) are spatially modulated. Lastly, we use the real-space approach to simulate recent tunneling data in the overdoped regime where the VHS has been …
Comparison of recent experimental STM data with single-impurity and many-impurity Bogoliubov-de Gennes calculations strongly suggests that random out-of-plane dopant atoms in cuprates modulate the pair interaction locally. This type of disorder is crucial to understanding the nanoscale electronic structure inhomogeneity observed in BSCCO-2212, and can reproduce observed correlations between the positions of impurity atoms and various aspects of the local density of states such as the gap magnitude and the height of the coherence peaks. Our results imply that each dopant atom modulates the pair…
Angle-dependent studies of the gap function provide evidence for the coexistence of two distinct gaps in hole doped cuprates, where the gap near the nodal direction scales with the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$, while that in the antinodal direction scales with the pseudogap temperature. We present model calculations which show that most of the characteristic features observed in the recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) as well as scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) two-gap studies are consistent with a scenario in which the pseudogap has a non-superconductin…
We present a simple derivation of an expression for the superfluid density $ n_s \propto 1/λ^2 $ in superconductors with the tight binding energy dispersion. The derived expression is discussed in detail because of its distinction from the known expressions for ordinary superconductors with parabolic energy dispersion. We apply this expression for the experimental data analysis of the isotope effect in London penetration depth parameter $ λ$ in the BiSrCuO and YBaCuO family compounds near optimal doping, taking into account the orthorhombic distortion of crystal structure, and estimate the iso…
We survey the use of spectroscopic imaging STM to probe the electronic structure of underdoped cuprates. Two distinct classes of electronic states are observed in both the d-wave superconducting (dSC) and the pseudogap (PG) phases. The first class consists of the dispersive Bogoliubov quasiparticle excitations of a homogeneous d-wave superconductor, existing below a lower energy scale E=Delta0. We find that the Bogoliubov quasiparticle interference signatures of delocalized Cooper pairing are restricted to a k-space arc which terminates near the lines connecting k=\pm(pi/a0,0) to k=\pm(pi/a0).…
Striped superconductivity with lattice distortions is investigated based on the three-band Hubbard model for high-Tc cuprates. A stable inhomogeneous striped state is determined in the low-temperature tetragonal (LTT) phase with lattice distortions using a quantum variational Monte Carlo method. The ground state has vertical or horizontal hole-rich arrays coexisting with incommensurate magnetism and superconductivity induced by several percent lattice distortions. The superconductivity order parameter oscillates according to the inhomogeneity in the antiferromagnetic background with its maxima…
The thermal resistivity of manganites and cuprates is shown to correlate with local lattice distortions and the presence of localized holes as determined from neutron diffraction and nuclear quadrupole resonance. Oxygen doping dependent studies of heat conduction in Y-123 and Hg cuprates suggest that a fraction of the holes in the CuO$_2$ planes are localized near the planar hole concentration $p=1/8$. The results are consistent with the formation of short-ranged, static stripe domains that are pinned near oxygen vacancy clusters.
We apply a recently developed method combining first principles based Wannier functions with solutions to the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations to the problem of interpreting STM data in cuprate superconductors. We show that the observed images of Zn on the surface of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_8$ can only be understood by accounting for the tails of the Cu Wannier functions, which include significant weight on apical O sites in neighboring unit cells. This calculation thus puts earlier crude "filter" theories on a microscopic foundation and solves a long standing puzzle. We then study quasiparticle …
Using electron-phonon mechanism, we explains very well the spatial anti-orrelation between the energy-gap and the energy of phonon mode for cuprate superconductor found in d^2I/dV^2 spectrum by STM measurements [Jinho Lee, et.al Nature {\bf 442},546 (2006)], which is the direct effect of a relation $M<ω^{2}>λ=const$. We calculate T$_{C}$ maps on $λ-Ω_{P}$ plane which help us understanding the relation M<ω^{2}>λ=const$ and the superconductivity of superconductors.
We study the Ginzburg-Landau free energy functional for two coupled U(1) charge order parameters describing two non-equivalent charge orders with wave vector ${\bf Q}$ detected in X-ray and STM measurements of underdoped cuprates. We do not rely on a mean-field analysis, but rather utilize a field-theoretical technique suitable to study the interplay between vortex physics and discrete symmetry breaking in two-dimensional systems with U(1) symmetry. Our calculations support the idea that in the clean systems there are two transitions: from a high temperature disordered state into a state with …
We study the lowest energy state in the CuO$_2$ plane of cuprate superconductors, related to the vibration that does not involve distortions of constituent units of the plane, the Rigid Unit Mode (RUM). We discuss the correlated motion in the plane due to RUM on temperature decrease, and possible relevance of this phonon for superconductivity.
Motivated by the recent scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experiments [J. E. Hoffman {\it et al.}, Science {\bf 297}, 1148 (2002); K. McElroy {\it et al.}, Nature (to be published)], we investigate the real space local density of states (LDOS) induced by weak disorder in a d-wave superconductor. We first present the energy dependent LDOS images around a single weak defect at several energies, and then point out that the experimentally observed checkerboard pattern in the LDOS could be understood as a result of quasiparticle interferences by randomly distributed defects. It is also shown that…
One of the key challenges in the field of high-temperature superconductivity is understanding the nature of fermionic quasiparticles. Experiments consistently demonstrate the existence of a second energy scale, distinct from the d-wave superconducting gap, that persists above the transition temperature into the "pseudogap" phase. One common class of models relates this energy scale to the quasiparticle gap due to a competing order, such as the incommensurate "checkerboard" order observed in scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and resonant elastic X-ray scattering (REXS). In this paper we show …
We have studied tunneling-mediated local density of states (LDOS) of the surface layer of a bilayer cuprate, where a Zn impurity is located on the second Cu-O layer. When the tunneling strength between two Cu-O layers is larger than a critical value, the LDOS on the site just above the Zn impurity first exhibits a resonant peak near the Fermi surface. The larger the tunneling strength, the stronger the resonant peak. It is also shown that the height of the resonant peak oscillates decreasingly with the distance from the site just above the Zn impurity. The location of the resonant peak in the …
We study the $τ_1$-impurity induced $\mathbf{q}$-space pattern of the energy derivative local density of states (LDOS) in a d-wave superconductor. We are motivated in part by the recent scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) observation of strong gap inhomogeneity with weak charge density variation in Bi$_{2}$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (BSCCO). The hypothesis is that the gap inhomogeneity might be triggered by the disorder in pair potential. We focus on the effects of electron coupling to various bosonic modes, at the mode energy shifted by the d-wave superconducting gap. The pattern due to a highly…
Motivated by the recent STM experiments of J.E. Hoffman et.al. and C. Howald et.al., we study the effects of weak translational symmetry breaking on the quasiparticle spectrum of a d-wave superconductor. We develop a general formalism to discuss periodic charge order, as well as quasiparticle scattering off localized defects. We argue that the STM experiments in $Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+δ}$ cannot be explained using a simple charge density wave order parameter, but are consistent with the presence of a periodic modulation in the electron hopping or pairing amplitude. We review the effects of random…
We discuss recent elastic neutron scattering and scanning tunneling experiments on high-T_c cuprates exposed to an applied magnetic field. In particular we show that a physical picture consisting of antiferromagnetic vortex cores operating as pinning centers for surrounding stripes is qualitatively consistent with the neutron data provided the stripes have the usual antiphase modulation. Further, we calculate the electronic structure in such a region using a T-matrix method, and find a checkerboard interference pattern consistent with recent scanning tunneling experiments.
In scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) conductance curves, the superconducting gap of cuprates is sometimes accompanied by small sub-gap structures at very low energy. This was documented early on near vortex cores and later at zero magnetic field. Using mean-field toy models of coexisting d-wave superconductivity ($d$SC), \emph{d}-form factor density wave ($d$FF-DW), and extended s-wave pair density wave ($s'$PDW), we find agreement with this phenomenon, with $s'$PDW playing a critical role. We explore the high variability of the gap structure with changes in band structure and density wave (…
Recent STM measurements have observed many inhomogeneous patterns of the local density of states on the surface of high-T_c cuprates. As a first step to study such disordered strong correlated systems, we use the BdG equation for the t-t'-t"-J model with an impurity. The impurity is taken into account by a local potential or local variation of the hopping/exchange terms. Strong correlation is treated by a Gutzwiller mean-field theory with local Gutzwiller factors and local chemical potentials. It turned out that the potential impurity scattering is greatly suppressed, while the local variation…
Recent STM measurements have revealed the existence of periodic charge modulations at the surface of certain cuprate superconductors. Here we show that the observed patterns are compatible with the formation of a three-dimensional crystal of doped holes, with space correlations extending between different Cu-O layers. This puts severe constraints on the dynamical stability of the crystallised hole structure, resulting in a close relationship between the periodicity of the electronic modulation and the interlayer distance.
Several models of the electronic spectrum in the pseudogap state of underdoped cuprates have been proposed to explain ARPES and STM measurements, which reveal only truncated Fermi pockets instead of a full metallic Fermi surface. We consider the transport properties expected of four physically distinct models, and calculate the thermal and electrical conductivity of the electronic quasiparticles. By proposing transport currents that reflect the close correspondence between quasiparticles on the Fermi pockets in the pseudogap and those near nodes in the superconducting state, we show that measu…
Scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS) measurements were carried out on a multi-layered cuprate superconductor Ba$_2$Ca$_5$Cu$_6$O$_{12}$(O$_{1-x}$,F$_x$)$_2$. STM topography revealed random spot structures with the characteristic length $\le 0.5$ nm. The conductance spectra dI/dV(V) show the coexistence of smaller gaps $Δ_S$ and large gaps (pseudogaps) $Δ_L$. The pseudogap-related features in the superconducting state were traced with the spatial resolution of $\sim$ 0.07 nm. Here, $I$ and $V$ are the tunnel current and bias voltage, respectively. The temperature, $T$, dependenc…
Based upon a phenomenological $t-t'-U-V$ model and using Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, we found that near the optimal doping $δ=0.15$ at low temperature ($T$), only the pure d-wave superconductivity (dSC) prevails and the antiferromagnetic (AF) order is completely suppressed. However, at higher $T$ the AF order with stripe modulation and the accompanying charge density wave (CDW) emerge, and they could exist even above the superconducting transition temperature. This implies that the existence of the CDW depends critically on the presence of the AF order, not so much on the dSC. The LDOS (lo…
Surface probes such as scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) have detected complex patterns at the nanoscale, indicative of electronic inhomogeneity, in a variety of high temperature superconductors. In cuprates, the pattern formation is associated with the pseudogap phase, a precursor to the high temperature superconducting state. Symmetry breaking (i.e. from C4 to C2) in the form of electronic nematicity has recently been implicated as a unifying theme of the pseudogap phase,[1] however the fundamental physics governing the nanoscale pattern formation has not yet been identified. Here we use u…
Based on the $t-t'-U-V$ model with proper chosen parameters for describing the cuprate superconductors, it is found that near the optimal doping at low temperature ($T$), only the pure d-wave superconductivity ($d$SC) prevails and the antiferromagnetic (AF) order is completely suppressed. At higher $T$, the AF order with stripe modulation and the accompanying charge order may emerge, and they could exist above the $d$SC transition temperature. We calculate the local differential tunnelling conductance (LDTC) from the local density of states (LDOS) and show that their energy variations are rath…
Both "large-U" and "small-U" orbitals are used to study the electronic structure of the high-T_c cuprates. A striped structure with three types of carriers are induced, polaron-like "stripons" which carry charge, "quasielectrons" which carry both charge and spin, and "svivons" which carry spin and lattice distortion. Anomalous physical properties of the cuprates are derived, and specifically the systematic behavior of the resistivity, Hall constant, and thermoelectric power. Transitions between pair states of quasielectrons and stripons drive high-temperature superconductivity.
Following our recent conjecture to model the phenomenona of antiferromagnetism and superconductivity by quantum symmetry groups, we discuss in the present note the choice of the classical symmetry group underlying the quantum group. Keeping in mind the degrees of freedom arising from spin, charge, and lattice we choose the classical group as SO(7). This choice is also motivated to accomodate the several competing phases which are or may be present in these and related materials, such as stripe phase [mesoscopically ordered phase], Luttinger liquids, nearly antiferromagnetic Fermi liquids, char…
A recent discovery of the pair density wave (PDW) order creates a stir in understanding an underlying physics in the pseudogap states of the cuprate high temperature superconductors. We have performed a Spectroscopic Imaging Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (SI-STM) measurements on Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_8$+$δ$ and identified that spatially uniform d-wave superconductivity (DSC), d-symmetry charge density wave (CDW), and the PDW play important roles in an intertwined fashion. In this review, we show how these different electronic degrees of freedom emerges in electronic structures of the cuprate …
Considering both "large-U" and "small-U" orbitals, it is found that the carriers of the high-Tc cuprates are polaron-like "stripons" carrying charge and located on stripe-like inhomogeneities, "quasi-electrons" carrying charge and spin, and "svivons" carrying spin and lattice distortion. This is shown to result in the observed anomalous spectroscopic and transport properties of the cuprates. Pairing results from transitions between pair states of stripons and quasi-electrons through the exchange of svivons, and a crossover occurs between BCS and Bose-Einstein condensation behaviors.
We performed STM/STS measurements on underdoped Bi2212 crystals with doping levels p ~ 0.11, ~ 0.13 and ~ 0.14 to examine the nature of the nondispersive 4a X 4a charge order in the superconducting state at T << Tc. The charge order appears conspicuously within the pairing gap, and low doping tends to favor the charge order. We point out the possibility that the 4a X 4a charge order will be dynamical in itself, and pinned down over regions with effective pinning centers. The pinned 4a X 4a charge order is closely related to the spatially inhomogeneous pairing gap structure, which has often bee…
