This paper investigates the star formation rate (SFR) in the Solar neighbourhood. First, we build the local age distribution function (ADF) with an updated sample of 442 star clusters located at less than 1\,kpc from the Sun. Next, we define the SFR, compute the individual mass evolution of a population of artificial clusters covering the broad range of parameters observed in actual clusters, and assume 100\,\ms\ as the low-mass limit for effective cluster observation. This leads to a simulated ADF, which is compared to the low-noise Solar neighbourhood ADF. The best match corresponds to a non-constant SFR presenting two conspicuous excesses for ages $\le9$\,Myr and between 220-600\,Myr (the local starburst). The average formation rate is $\bar{SFR}\approx(2500\pm500)\,\mmy$, corresponding to the average surface formation rate $\bar{\ssfr}\approx(790\pm160)\,\mmk$. These values are consistent with the formation rate inferred from embedded clusters (ECs), but much lower ($\la16%$) than that implied by field stars. Both the local starburst and the recent star formation period require $SFR\sim2\times\bar{SFR}$ to be described. The simulations show that $91.2\pm2.7%$ of the clusters created in the Solar neighbourhood do not survive the first 10\,Myr, which is consistent with the rate of EC dissolution.
I investigate the suggestion that the Hyades moving group in the Solar neighbourhood is the result of a recent inner Lindblad resonance. I use dynamical "torus" models of the Galaxy to understand the expected distribution of solar neighbourhood stars in angle coordinates for phase-mixed models and models which include a resonant component. I show that attempts to find the signatures of resonances in angle coordinates are strongly influenced by selection effects, including rather subtle effects associated with the relationship between action and angle for stars at a given point. These effects m…
We report on the detection in the combined $Gaia$-DR1/RAVE data of a lack of disk stars in the solar neighbourhood with velocities close to zero angular momentum. We propose that this may be caused by the scattering of stars with very low angular momentum onto chaotic, halo-type orbits when they pass through the Galactic nucleus. We model the effect in a Milky-Way like potential and fit the resulting model directly to the data, finding a likelihood ($\sim2.7σ$) of a dip in the distribution. Using this effect, we can make a dynamical measurement of the Solar rotation velocity around the Galacti…
The age-metallicity relation is a fundamental tool for constraining the chemical evolution of the Galactic disc. In this work we analyse the observational properties of this relation using binary stars that have not interacted consisting of a white dwarf - from which we can derive the total age of the system - and a main sequence star - from which we can derive the metallicity as traced by the [Fe/H] abundances. Our sample consists of 46 widely separated, but unresolved spectroscopic binaries identified within the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, and 189 white dwarf plus main sequence common proper m…
I present an algorithm for inverting the luminosity function for white dwarfs to obtain a maximum likelihood estimate of the star formation rate of the host stellar population. The algorithm is of the general class of Expectation Maximization, and involves iteratively improving an initial guess of the star formation rate. Tests show that the inversion results are quite sensitive to the assumed metallicity and initial mass function, but relatively insensitive to the initial-final mass relation and ratio of H/He atmosphere white dwarfs. Application to two independent determinations of the Solar …
The velocity-space distribution of the solar neighbourhood stars shows complex substructures. Most of the previous studies use static potentials to investigate their origins. Instead we use a self-consistent $N$-body model of the Milky Way, whose potential is asymmetric and evolves with time. In this paper, we quantitatively evaluate the similarities of the velocity-space distributions in the $N$-body model and that of the solar neighbourhood, using Kullback-Leibler divergence (KLD). The KLD analysis shows the time evolution and spatial variation of the velocity-space distribution. The KLD flu…
Taking advantage of the Gaia DR1, we combined TGAS parallaxes with the Tycho-2 and APASS photometry to calculate the star formation history (SFH) of the solar neighbourhood within 250 pc using the colour-magnitude diagram fitting technique. Our dynamically-evolved SFH is in excellent agreement with that calculated from the Hipparcos catalogue within 80 pc of the Sun, showing an enhanced star formation rate (SFR) in the past ~4 Gyr. We then correct the SFR for the disc thickening with age to obtain a SFR that is representative of the whole solar cylinder, and show that even with an extreme corr…
We analyse the kinematics of disc stars observed by the RAVE survey in and beyond the Solar neighbourhood. We detect significant overdensities in the velocity distributions using a technique based on the wavelet transform. We find that the main local kinematic groups are large scale features, surviving at least up to ~1 kpc from the Sun in the direction of anti-rotation, and also at ~700 pc below the Galactic plane. We also find that for regions located at different radii than the Sun, the known groups appear shifted in the velocity plane. For example, the Hercules group has a larger azimuthal ve…
In the age of high-resolution spectroscopic stellar surveys of the Milky Way, the number of stars with detailed abundances of multiple elements is rapidly increasing. These elemental abundances are directly influenced by the evolutionary history of the Galaxy, but this can be difficult to interpret without an absolute timeline of the abundance enrichment. We present age-abundance trends for [M/H], [α/M], and 17 individual elements using a sample of 721 solar neighbourhood Hipparcos red giant stars observed by APOGEE. These age trends are determined through a Bayesian hierarchical modelling met…
We present the first determination of absolute magnitudes for the red clump (RC) stars with the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). We used recently reduced parallaxes taken from the Hipparcos catalogue and identified 3889 RC stars with the WISE photometry in the Solar neighbourhood. Mode values estimated from the distributions of absolute magnitudes and a colour of the RC stars in WISE photometry are M_{W1}=-1.635(0.026), M_{W3}=-1.606(0.024) and (W1-W3)_0=-0.028(0.001) mag. These values are consistent with those obtained from the transformation formulae using 2MASS data. Distances of…
In a previous paper based on dark matter only simulations we show that, in the approximation of an analytic and static potential describing the strongly triaxial and cuspy shape of Milky Way-sized haloes, diffusion due to chaotic mixing in the neighbourhood of the Sun does not efficiently erase phase space signatures of past accretion events. In this second paper we further explore the effect of chaotic mixing using multicomponent Galactic potential models and solar neighbourhood-like volumes extracted from fully cosmological hydrodynamic simulations, thus naturally accounting for the gravitat…
The vertical distribution of stars in the solar neighbourhood is not in equilibrium but contains a wave signature in both density and velocity space originating from a perturbation. With the discovery of the phase-space spiral in Gaia data release 2, determining the origin of this perturbation has become even more urgent. We develop and test a fast method for calculating the perturbation from a passing satellite on the vertical component of a part of a disc galaxy. This fast method allows us to test a large variety of possible perturbations to the vertical disc very quickly. We apply our metho…
We use proper motions and parallaxes from the new reduction of Hipparcos data and Geneva-Copenhagen radial velocities for a complete sample of ~15000 main-sequence and subgiant stars, and new Padova isochrones to constrain the kinematics and star-formation history of the solar neighbourhood. We rederive the solar motion and the structure of the local velocity ellipsoids. When the principal velocity dispersions are assumed to increase with time as t^β, the index βis larger for σ_W (β_W~0.45) than for σ_U (β_U~0.31). For the three-dimensional velocity dispersion we obtain β=0.35. We exclude satu…
Torus mapping yields constants of motion for stars trapped at a resonance. Each such constant of motion yields a system of contours in velocity space at the Sun and neighbouring points. If Jeans' theorem applied to resonantly trapped orbits, the density of stars in velocity space would be equal at all intersections of any two contours. A quantitative measure of the violation of this principal is defined and used to assess various pattern speeds for a model of the bar recently fitted to observations of interstellar gas. Trapping at corotation of a bar with pattern speed in the range 33-36 /Gyr …
The Gaia DR2 catalog is the best source of stellar astrometric and photometric data available today. The history of the Milky Way galaxy is written in stone in this data set. Parallaxes and photometry tell us where the stars are today, when were they formed, and with what chemical content, i.e. their star formation history (SFH). We develop a Bayesian hierarchical model suited to reconstruct the SFH of a resolved stellar population. We study the stars brighter than $G\,=\,15$ within 100 pc of the Sun in Gaia DR2 and derive a SFH of the solar neighbourhood in agreement with previous determinati…
We determine the total dynamical density in the solar neighbourhood using the Tycho-Gaia Astrometric Solution (TGAS) catalogue. Astrometric measurements of proper motion and parallax of stars inform us of both the stellar number density distribution and the velocity distribution of stars close to the plane. Assuming equilibrium, these distributions are interrelated through the local dynamical density. For the first time, we do a full joint fit of the velocity and stellar number density distributions while accounting for the astrometric error of individual stars, in the framework of Bayesian Hi…
The velocity distribution of stars in the Solar neighbourhood is inhomogeneous and rich with stellar streams and kinematic structures. These may retain important clues of the formation and dynamical history of the Milky Way. However, the nature and origin of many of the streams and structures is unclear, hindering our understanding of how the Milky Way formed and evolved. We aim to study the velocity distribution of stars of the Solar neighbourhood and investigate the properties of individual kinematic structures in order to improve our understanding of their origins. Using the astrometric dat…
We explore the predictive power of cosmological, hydrodynamical simulations for stellar phase space substructure and velocity correlations with the Auriga simulations and Aurigaia mock-Gaia catalogues. We show that at the solar circle the Auriga simulations commonly host phase space structures in the stellar component that have constant orbital energies and arise from accreted subhaloes. These structures can persist for a few Gyrs, even after coherent streams in position space have been erased. We also explore velocity two-point correlation functions and find this diagnostic is not determinist…
We search for the existence of chemically-distinct stellar components in the solar neighbourhood using published data. Extending earlier work, we show that when the abundances of Fe, alpha elements, and the r-process element Eu are considered, stars separate neatly into two groups that delineate the traditional thin and thick disk of the Milky Way. The group akin to the thin disk is traced by stars with [Fe/H]>-0.7 and alpha/Fe<0.2. The thick disk-like group overlaps the thin disk in [Fe/H] but has higher abundances of alpha elements and Eu. Stars in the range -1.5<[Fe/H]<-0.7 with low [alpha/…
Bressert et al. recently showed that the surface density distribution of low-mass, young stellar objects (YSOs) in the solar neighbourhood is approximately log-normal. The authors conclude that the star formation process is hierarchical and that only a small fraction of stars form in dense star clusters. Here, we show that the peak and the width of the density distribution are also what follow if all stars form in bound clusters which are not significantly affected by the presence of gas and expand by two-body relaxation. The peak of the surface density distribution is simply obtained from the…
The integrated galactic initial mass function (IGIMF) is computed from the combination of the stellar initial mass function (IMF) and the embedded cluster mass function, described by a power law with index beta. The result of the combination is a time-varying IMF which depends on the star formation rate. We applied the IGIMF formalism to a chemical evolution model for the solar neighbourhood and compared the results obtained by assuming three possible values for beta with the ones obtained by means of a standard, well-tested, constant IMF. In general, a lower absolute value of beta implies a f…
We use about 15,000 F/G nearby dwarf stars selected from the LAMOST pilot survey to map the U-V velocity distribution in the solar neighbourhood. An extreme deconvolution algorithm is applied to reconstruct an empirical multi-Gaussian model. In addition to the well known substructures, e.g., Sirius, Coma Berenices, Hyades-Pleiades over-densities, several new substructures are unveiled. A ripple-like structure from (U, V) = (-120, -5) to (103, -32)km/s is clearly seen in the U-V distribution. This structure seems associated with resonance induced by the Galactic bar, since it is extended in U w…
Stars in the solar neighbourhood do not have a smooth distribution of velocities. Instead, the distribution of velocity components in the Galactic plane manifests a great deal of kinematic substructure. Here I present an analysis in action-angle variables of the Geneva-Copenhagen survey of ~14,000 nearby F & G dwarfs with distances and full space motions. I show that stars in the so-called "Hyades stream" have both angle and action variables characteristic of their having been scattered at an inner Lindblad resonance of a rotating disturbance potential. This discovery seems to favour spiral pa…
The formation of molecular hydrogen (H$_2$) and carbon monoxide (CO) is sensitive to the volume and column density distribution of the turbulent interstellar medium. In this paper, we study H$_2$ and CO formation in a large set of hydrodynamical simulations of periodic boxes with driven supersonic turbulence, as well as in colliding flows with the \textsc{Flash} code. The simulations include a non-equilibrium chemistry network, gas self-gravity, and diffuse radiative transfer. We investigate the spatial resolution required to obtain a converged H$_2$ and CO mass fraction and formation history.…
Gravitational acceleration fields can be deduced from the collisionless Boltzmann equation, once the distribution function is known. This can be constructed via the method of normalizing flows from datasets of the positions and velocities of stars. Here, we consider application of this technique to the solar neighbourhood. We construct mock data from a linear superposition of multiple `quasi-isothermal' distribution functions, representing stellar populations in the equilibrium Milky Way disc. We show that given a mock dataset comprising a million stars within 1 kpc of the Sun, the underlying …
The initial mass function determines the fraction of stars of different intial mass born per stellar generation. In this paper, we test the effects of the integrated galactic initial mass function (IGIMF) on the chemical evolution of the solar neighbourhood. The IGIMF (Weidner & Kroupa 2005) is computed from the combination of the stellar intial mass function (IMF), i.e. the mass function of single star clusters, and the embedded cluster mass function, i.e. a power law with index beta. By taking into account also the fact that the maximum achievable stellar mass is a function of the total mass…
We present the chemodynamic structure of the solar neighbourhood using 62 814 stars within a 500 pc sphere of the Sun observed by GALAH and with astrometric parameters from Gaia DR2. We measure the velocity dispersion for all three components (vertical, radial, and tangential) and find that it varies smoothly with [Fe/H] and [$α$/Fe] for each component. The vertical component is especially clean, with $σ_{v_z}$ increasing from a low of $8$ km s$^{-1}$ at solar-[$α$/Fe] and [Fe/H] to a high of more than 50 km s$^{-1}$ for more metal-poor and [$α$/Fe] enhanced populations. We find no evidence of…
With the much enlarged stellar sample of 55831 stars and much increased precision in distances, proper motions, provided by Gaia DR1 TGAS we have shown with the help of the wavelet analysis that the velocity distribution of stars in the Solar neighbourhood contains more kinematic structures than previously known. We detect 19 kinematic structures between scales 3-16 km/s at the 3sigma confidence level. Among them we identified well-known groups (such as Hercules, Sirius, Coma Berenices, Pleiades, and Wolf 630). We confirmed recently detected groups (such as Antoja12 and Bobylev16). In addition…
It has recently been proposed that if the Galactic dark matter halo were triaxial it would induce lumpiness in the velocity distribution of halo stars in the Solar Neighbourhood through orbital resonances. These substructures could therefore provide a way of measuring its shape. We explore the robustness of this proposal by integrating numerically orbits starting from a realistic set of initial conditions in dark halo potentials of different shape. We have analysed the resulting velocity distributions in Solar neighbourhood-like volumes, and have performed statistical tests for the presence of…
The direct detection of dark matter on Earth depends crucially on its density and its velocity distribution on a milliparsec scale. Conventional N-body simulations are unable to access this scale, making the development of other approaches necessary. In this paper, we apply the method developed in Fantin et al. 2008 to a cosmologically-based merger tree, transforming it into a useful instrument to reproduce and analyse the merger history of a Milky Way-like system. The aim of the model is to investigate the implications of any ultra-fine structure for the current and next generation of directi…
[abridged] We determine the relationship between turbulence energy and gas density variance for 15 molecular clouds in the Solar neighbourhood. We use the linewidths of the CO molecule as the probe of the turbulence energy (sonic Mach number, $\cal{M}_\mathrm{s}$) and three-dimensional models to reconstruct the density probability distribution function ($ρ$-PDF) of the clouds, derived using near-infrared extinction and Herschel dust emission data, as the probe of the density variance ($σ_\mathrm{s}$). We find no significant correlation between $\cal{M}_\mathrm{s}$ and $σ_\mathrm{s}$ among the …
We performed a spectroscopic survey of nearly 700 stars probing the galactic thick disc far from the solar neighbourhood towards the galactic coordinates (l~277, b~47). The derived effective temperatures, surface gravities and overall metallicities were then combined with stellar evolution isochrones, radial velocities and proper motions to derive the distances, kinematics and orbital parameters of the sample stars. The targets belonging to each galactic component (thin disc, thick disc, halo) were selected either on their kinematics or according to their position above the galactic plane, and…
The optical surface brightness of dark nebulae is mainly due to scattering of integrated starlight by classical dust grains. It contains information on the impinging interstellar radiation field, cloud structure, and grain scattering properties. We have obtained spectra of the scattered light from 3500 to 9000 Angstrom in two globules, the Thumbprint Nebula and DC303.8-14.2. We use observations of the scattered light to study the impinging integrated starlight spectrum as well as the scattered H-alpha and other line emissions from all over the sky. We search also for the presence of other than…
Bars and spirals are among the main drivers of the secular evolution of galactic disks, and it is, thus, of prime importance to better understand their exact nature and dynamics. In this respect, the Milky Way provides a unique laboratory in which to study a snapshot of their detailed dynamical influence in six-dimensional phase-space. With the advent of present and future astrometric and spectroscopic surveys, such six-dimensional phase-space data can be obtained for stars in an increasingly large volume around the Sun. Here, we review the signatures of - and constraints on - disk non-axisymm…
We show that diffusion due to chaotic mixing in the Neighbourhood of the Sun may not be as relevant as previously suggested in erasing phase space signatures of past Galactic accretion events. For this purpose, we analyse Solar Neighbourhood-like volumes extracted from cosmological simulations that naturally account for chaotic orbital behaviour induced by the strongly triaxial and cuspy shape of the resulting dark matter haloes, among other factors. In the approximation of an analytical static triaxial model, our results show that a large fraction of stellar halo particles in such local volum…
Matter distribution models of the Milky Way galaxy are usually stationary, although there are known to be wave-like perturbations in the disc at $\sim10\%$ level of the total density. Modelling of the overall acceleration field by allowing non-equilibrium is a complicated task. We must learn to distinguish whether density enhancements are persistent or not by their nature. In the present paper, we elaborate our orbital arc method to include the effects of massless perturbations and non-stationarities in the modelling. The method is tested by modelling of simulation data and shown to be valid. …
Using 17 chemical elements as a proxy for stellar DNA, we present a full phylogenetic study of stars in the solar neighbourhood. This entails applying a clustering technique that is widely used in molecular biology to construct an evolutionary tree from which three branches emerge. These are interpreted as stellar populations which separate in age and kinematics and can be thus attributed to the thin disk, the thick disk, and an intermediate population of probable distinct origin. We further find six lone stars of intermediate age that could not be assigned to any population with enough statis…
The vertical structure and dynamics of stars in our local Galactic neighbourhood contains much information about the local distribution of visible and dark matter and of perturbations to the Milky Way disc. We use data on the positions and velocities of stars in the solar neighbourhood from \gaia\ DR2 and large spectroscopic surveys to investigate the vertical number counts and mean-velocity trend as a function of distance from the local Galactic mid-plane. We perform a detailed measurement of the wave-like North-South asymmetry in the vertical number counts, which reveals a number of deficits…
We present a Bayesian implementation of isochrone fitting in deriving stellar ages and masses, incorporating absolute K magnitude ($\rm M_K$) derived from 2MASS photometry and Gaia DR1 parallax and differentiation between initial bulk metallicity and present day surface metallicity, with allowance for incorporating further constraints (e.g., asteroseismology) when available. As a test, we re-computed stellar ages and masses of $\sim 4000$ stars in the solar neighbourhood from six well-studied literature samples using both Hipparcos and TGAS parallaxes. Our ages are found to be compatible with …
We investigate the kinematics of red clump stars in the Solar Neighbourhood by combining data from TGAS and RAVE to constrain the local dark matter density. After calibrating the absolute magnitude of red clump stars, we characterize their velocity distribution over a radial distance range of $6$-$10$ kpc and up to $1.5$ kpc away from the Galactic plane. We then apply the axisymmetric Jeans equations on subsets representing the thin and thick disks to determine the (local) distribution of mass near the disk of our Galaxy. Our kinematic maps are well-behaved permitting a straightforward local d…
The Tycho-Gaia Astrometric Solution (TGAS) subset of the first Gaia catalogue contains an unprecedented sample of proper motions and parallaxes for two million stars brighter than G~12 mag. We take advantage of the full astrometric solution available for those stars to identify the members of known open clusters and compute mean cluster parameters using either TGAS or UCAC4 proper motions, and TGAS parallaxes. We apply an unsupervised membership assignment procedure to select high probability cluster members, we use a Bayesian/MCMC technique to fit stellar isochrones to the observed 2MASS JHK$…
We cross-match the Alma catalog of OB stars with Gaia DR2 astrometry and photometry as a first step towards producing a clean sample of massive stars in the solar neighbourhood with a high degree of completeness. We analyze the resulting colour-absolute magnitude diagram to divide our sample into categories and compare extinction estimates from two sources, finding problems with both of them. The distances obtained with three different priors are found to have few differences among them, indicating that Gaia DR2 distances are robust. An analysis of the 3-D distribution of massive stars in the …
The Galactic orbital parameters of 159 cataclysmic variables in the Solar neighbourhood are calculated, for the first time, to determine their population types using published kinematical parameters. Population analysis shows that about 6 per cent of cataclysmic variables in the sample are members of the thick disc component of the Galaxy. This value is consistent with the fraction obtained from star count analysis. The rest of the systems in the sample are found to be in the thin disc component of the Galaxy. Our analysis revealed no halo CVs in the Solar vicinity. About 60 per cent of the th…
The phase-space structure of our Galaxy holds the key to understand and reconstruct its formation. The Lambda-CDM model predicts a richly structured phase-space distribution of dark matter and (halo) stars, consisting of streams of particles torn from their progenitors during the process of hierarchical merging. While such streams quickly loose their spatial coherence in the process of phase mixing, the individual stars keep their common origin imprinted into their kinematic and chemical properties, allowing the recovery of the Galaxy's individual "building blocks". The field of Galactic Arche…
ABRIDGED: METHODS: We have conducted a high-resolution spectroscopic study of 714 F and G dwarf and subgiant stars in the Solar neighbourhood. The star sample has been kinematically selected to trace the Galactic thin and thick disks to their extremes...... The determination of stellar parameters and elemental abundances is based on a standard 1-D LTE analysis using equivalent width measurements in high-resolution (R=40000-110000) and high signal-to-noise (S/N=150-300) spectra obtained with..... RESULTS: .... Our data show that there is an old and alpha-enhanced disk population, and a younger …
I use a sample of more than 120,000 stars in the solar neighbourhood with parallaxes, magnitudes and colours estimated with unprecedented accuracy by the second data release of the Gaia mission to derive the initial mass function of the Galactic disc. A full-forward technique is used to take into account for the population of unresolved binaries, the metallicity distribution, the star formation history and their variation across the Galactic disk as well as all the observational effects. The shape of the initial mass function is well represented by a segmented power-law with two breaks at char…
Stars with a different vertical motion relative to the galactic disk have a different average acceleration. According to Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) theories they should therefore have a different average orbital velocity while revolving around the Milky Way. We show that this property can be used to constrain MOND theories by studying stars in the local neighborhood. With the {\sc Hipparcos} dataset we can only place marginal constraints. However, the forthcoming {\sc GAIA} catalogue with its significantly fainter cutoff should allow placing a stringent constraint.
The termination in the white dwarf luminosity function is a standard diagnostic tool for measuring the total age of nearby stellar populations. In this paper, an algorithm is presented for inverting the full white dwarf luminosity function to obtain a maximum likelihood estimate of the time varying star formation rate of the host stellar population. Tests with synthetic data demonstrate that the algorithm converges over a wide class of underlying star formation rate forms. The algorithm successfully estimates the moving average star formation rate as a function of lookback time in the presence…
Despite the simplicity of theoretical models of supersonically turbulent, isothermal media, their predictions successfully match the observed gas structure and star formation activity within low-pressure (P/k < 10^5 K cm^-3) molecular clouds in the solar neighbourhood. However, it is unknown if these theories extend to clouds in high-pressure (P/k > 10^7 K cm^-3) environments, like those in the Galaxy's inner 200 pc Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) and in the early Universe. Here we present ALMA 3mm dust continuum emission within a cloud, G0.253+0.016, which is immersed in the high-pressure enviro…
Context. The [Mg/Fe] abundance ratios are a fundamental fossil signature to trace the chemical evolution of the disc. Despite of the huge observational and theoretical effort, discrepancies between models and data are still present and several explanations have been put forward to explain the [$α$/Fe] bimodality. Aims. In this work, we take advantage of a new AMBRE:HARPS dataset, which provides new and more precise [Mg/Fe] estimations, as well as reliable stellar ages for a subsample of stars, to study the evolution of the solar neighbourhood. Methods. The above data are compared with detailed…
In spite of many observational efforts aiming to characterize the chemical evolution of our Galaxy, not much is known about the origin of fluorine (F). Models suggest that the F found in the Galaxy might have been produced mainly in three different ways, namely, Type II supernovae, asymptotic giant branch nucleosynthesis, or in the core of Wolf-Rayet stars. Only a few observational measurements of F abundances are available in the literature and mostly for objects whose characteristics might hamper an accurate determination of fluorine abundance (e.g.,complex mixing and nucleosynthesis process…
We investigated the age-metallicity relation using a sample of 5691 F and G type dwarfs from RAVE DR3 by applying several constraints: i) We selected stars with surface gravities log g < 3.8 and effective temperatures in the 5310<T_{eff}(K)<7300 range and obtained a dwarf sample. ii) We plotted the dwarfs in metallicity sub-samples in the T_{eff}-(J-K_s)_0 plane to compare with the corresponding data of Gonzalez Hernandez & Bonifacio (2009) and identified the ones in agreement. iii) We fitted the reduced dwarf sample obtained from constraints (i) and (ii) to the Padova isochrones and re-identi…
We infer the gravitational potential of the Galactic disk by analysing the phase-space densities of 120 stellar samples in 40 spatially separate sub-regions of the solar neighbourhood, using Gaia's second data release (DR2), in order to quantify spatially dependent systematic effects that bias this type of measurement. The gravitational potential was inferred under the assumption of a steady state in the framework of a Bayesian hierarchical model. We performed a joint fit of our stellar tracers' three-dimensional velocity distribution, while fully accounting for the astrometric uncertainties o…
We present a kinematical study of 314 RR~Lyrae stars in the solar neighbourhood using the publicly available photometric, spectroscopic, and {\it Gaia} DR2 astrometric data to explore their distribution in the Milky Way. We report an overdensity of 22 RR~Lyrae stars in the solar neighbourhood at a pericenter distance of between 5--9\,kpc from the Galactic center. Their orbital parameters and their chemistry indicate that these 22 variables share the kinematics and the [Fe/H] values of the Galactic disc, with an average metallicity and tangential velocity of [Fe/H]=$-0.60$\,dex and $v_θ = 241$\…
