One of the principle efforts in cosmic microwave background (CMB) research is measurement of the parameter fnl that quantifies the departure from Gaussianity in a large class of non-minimal inflationary (and other) models. Estimators for fnl are composed of a sum of products of the temperatures in three different pixels in the CMB map. Since the number ~Npix^2 of terms in this sum exceeds the number Npix of measurements, these ~Npix^2 terms cannot be statistically independent. Therefore, the central-limit theorem does not necessarily apply, and the probability distribution function (PDF) for the fnl estimator does not necessarily approach a Gaussian distribution for N_pix >> 1. Although the variance of the estimators is known, the significance of a measurement of fnl depends on knowledge of the full shape of its PDF. Here we use Monte Carlo realizations of CMB maps to determine the PDF for two minimum-variance estimators: the standard estimator, constructed under the null hypothesis (fnl=0), and an improved estimator with a smaller variance for |fnl| > 0. While the PDF for the null-hypothesis estimator is very nearly Gaussian when the true value of fnl is zero, the PDF becomes significantly non-Gaussian when |fnl| > 0. In this case we find that the PDF for the null-hypothesis estimator fnl_hat is skewed, with a long non-Gaussian tail at fnl_hat > |fnl| and less probability at fnl_hat < |fnl| than in the Gaussian case. We provide an analytic fit to these PDFs. On the other hand, we find that the PDF for the improved estimator is nearly Gaussian for observationally allowed values of fnl. We discuss briefly the implications for trispectrum (and other higher-order correlation) estimators.
We derive the linear correction term for needlet and wavelet estimators of the bispectrum and the non-linearity parameter fNL on cosmic microwave background radiation data. We show that on masked WMAP-like data with anisotropic noise, the error bars improve by 10-20% and almost reach the optimal error bars obtained with the KSW estimator (Komatsu et al 2005). In the limit of full-sky and isotropic noise, this term vanishes. We apply needlet and wavelet estimators to the WMAP 7-year data and obtain our best estimate fNL=37.5 \pm 21.8.
The extensive search for deviations from Gaussianity in cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB) data is very important due to the information about the very early moments of the universe encoded there. Recent analyses from Planck CMB data do not exclude the presence of non-Gaussianity of small amplitude, although they are consistent with the Gaussian hypothesis. The use of different techniques is essential to provide information about types and amplitudes of non-Gaussianities in the CMB data. In particular, we find interesting to construct an estimator based upon the combination of two pow…
Local non-Gaussianity causes correlations between large scale perturbation modes and the small scale power. The large-scale CMB signal has contributions from the integrated Sachs Wolfe (ISW) effect, which does not correlate with the small scale power. If this ISW contribution can be removed, the sensitivity to local non-Gaussianity is improved. Gravitational lensing and galaxy counts can be used to trace the ISW contribution; in particular we show that the CMB lensing potential is highly correlated with the ISW signal. We construct a nearly-optimal estimator for the local non-Gaussianity param…
We study the spherical Mexican hat wavelet (SMHW) as a detector of primordial non-Gaussianity of the local type on the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropies. For this purpose we define third order statistics based on the wavelet coefficient maps and the original map. We find the dependence of these statistics in terms of the non-linear coupling parameter fnl and the bispectrum of this type of non-Gaussianity. We compare the analytical values for these statistics with the results obtained with non-Gaussian simulations for an ideal full-sky CMB experiment without noise. We study the pow…
We present an upgraded combined estimator, based on Minkowski Functionals and Neural Networks, with excellent performance in detecting primordial non-Gaussianity in simulated maps that also contain a weighted mixture of Galactic contaminations, besides real pixel's noise from Planck cosmic microwave background radiation data. We rigorously test the efficiency of our estimator considering several plausible scenarios for residual non-Gaussianities in the foreground-cleaned Planck maps, with the intuition to optimize the training procedure of the Neural Network to discriminate between contaminati…
We address the dual challenge of estimating deviations from Gaussianity arising in models of the Early Universe, whilst retaining information necessary to assess whether a detection of non-Gaussianity is primordial. We do this by constructing a new statistic, the bispectrum-related power spectrum, which is constructed from a map of the Cosmic Microwave Background. The estimator is optimised for primordial non-Gaussianity detection, but can also be useful in distinguishing primordial non-Gaussianity from secondary non-Gaussianity, such as may arise from unsubtracted point sources, or residuals …
The non-Gaussianity of inflationary perturbations, as encoded in the bispectrum (or 3-point correlator), has become an important additional way of distinguishing between inflation models, going beyond the linear Gaussian perturbation quantities of the power spectrum. This habilitation thesis provides a review of my work on both the theoretical and the observational aspects of these non-Gaussianities. In the first part a formalism is described, called the long-wavelength formalism, that provides a way to compute the non-Gaussianities in multiple-field inflation. Applications of this formalism t…
Upcoming cosmic microwave background (CMB) data can be used to explore harmonic 3-point functions that involve the B-mode component of the CMB polarization signal. We focus on bispectra describing the non-Gaussian correlation of the B-mode field and the CMB temperature anisotropies (T) and/or E-mode polarization, i.e. <TTB>, <EEB>, and <TEB>. Such bispectra probe violations of the tensor consistency relation: the model-independent behavior of cosmological correlation functions that involve a large-wavelength tensor mode (gravitational wave). An observed violation of the tensor consistency rela…
Minimum-variance estimators for the parameter fnl that quantifies local-model non-Gaussianity can be constructed from the cosmic microwave background (CMB) bispectrum (three-point function) and also from the trispectrum (four-point function). Some have suggested that a comparison between the estimates for the values of fnl from the bispectrum and trispectrum allow a consistency test for the model. But others argue that the saturation of the Cramer-Rao bound by the bispectrum estimator implies that no further information on fnl can be obtained from the trispectrum. Here we elaborate the nature …
In this paper we establish the accuracy and robustness of a fast estimator for the bispectrum - the "FFT bispectrum estimator". The implementation of the estimator presented here offers speed and simplicity benefits over a direct sampling approach. We also generalise the derivation so it may be easily be applied to any order polyspectra, such as the trispectrum, with the cost of only a handful of FFTs. All lower order statistics can also be calculated simultaneously for little extra cost. To test the estimator we make use of a non-linear density field, and for a more strongly non-Gaussian test…
We describe the details of the binned bispectrum estimator as used for the official 2013 and 2015 analyses of the temperature and polarization CMB maps from the ESA Planck satellite. The defining aspect of this estimator is the determination of a map bispectrum (3-point correlator) that has been binned in harmonic space. For a parametric determination of the non-Gaussianity in the map (the so-called fNL parameters), one takes the inner product of this binned bispectrum with theoretically motivated templates. However, as a complementary approach one can also smooth the binned bispectrum using a…
In this work we present constraints on different shapes of primordial non-Gaussianity using the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) 7-year data and the spherical Mexican hat wavelet fnl estimator including the linear term correction. In particular we focus on the local, equilateral and orthogonal shapes. We first analyse the main statistical properties of the wavelet estimator and show the conditions to reach optimality. We include the linear term correction in our estimators and compare the estimates with the values already published using only the cubic term. The estimators are teste…
We devise a fast and optimal estimator for the amplitude of the bispectrum of clustered Infrared (IR) point-sources. We show how this estimator can account for the cases of partial sky coverage and inhomogeneous noise. Expected detection significance are presented in terms of signal-to-noise, finding that the IR bispectrum will realistically be undetectable below 220 GHz with a Planck-like experiment; on the contrary detection may be achieved at, or above, 220 GHz especially if the CMB is removed. We also show how this estimator can be combined with estimators of radio and CMB non-Gaussianity …
We explore a systematic approach to the analysis of primordial non-Gaussianity using fluctuations in temperature and polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). Following Munshi & Heavens (2009), we define a set of power-spectra as compressed forms of the bispectrum and trispectrum derived from CMB temperature and polarization maps; these spectra compress the information content of the corresponding full multispectra and can be useful in constraining early Universe theories. We generalize the standard pseudo-C_l estimators in such a way that they apply to these spectra involving bot…
An improved estimator for the amplitude fnl of local-type non-Gaussianity from the cosmic microwave background (CMB) bispectrum is discussed. The standard estimator is constructed to be optimal in the zero-signal (i.e., Gaussian) limit. When applied to CMB maps which have a detectable level of non-Gaussianity the standard estimator is no longer optimal, possibly limiting the sensitivity of future observations to a non-Gaussian signal. Previous studies have proposed an improved estimator by using a realization-dependent normalization. Under the approximations of a flat sky and a vanishingly thi…
We use the ellipsoidal collapse approximation to investigate the nonlinear redshift space evolution of the density field with primordial non-Gaussianity of the local f_{nl}-type. We utilize the joint distribution of eigenvalues of the initial non-Gaussian shear field and evaluate the evolved redshift space probability distribution function (PDF). It is shown that, similar to the real space analysis, the underdense tail of the nonlinear redshift space PDF differs significantly from that for Gaussian initial conditions. We also derive the lowest order correction of the Kaiser's formulain the pre…
Squeezed primordial non-Gaussianity can strongly constrain early-universe physics, but it can only be observed on the CMB after it has been gravitationally lensed. We give a new simple non-perturbative prescription for accurately calculating the effect of lensing on any squeezed primordial bispectrum shape, and test it with simulations. We give the generalization to polarization bispectra, and discuss the effect of lensing on the trispectrum. We explain why neglecting the lensing smoothing effect does not significantly bias estimators of local primordial non-Gaussianity, even though the change…
The measurements of the statistical properties of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) fluctuations enable us to probe the physics of the very early Universe especially at the epoch of inflation. A particular interest lays on the detection of the non-Gaussianity of the CMB as it can constrain the current proposed models of inflation and structure formation, or possibly point out new models. The current approach to measure the degree of non-Gaussianity of the CMB is to estimate a single parameter which is highly model-dependent. The bispectrum is a natural and widely studied tool for measuring…
The peculiar motion of an observer with respect to the CMB rest frame induces a deflection in the arrival direction of the observed photons (also known as CMB aberration) and a Doppler shift in the measured photon frequencies. As a consequence, aberration and Doppler effects induce non trivial correlations between the harmonic coefficients of the observed CMB temperature maps. In this paper we investigate whether these correlations generate a bias on Non-Gaussianity estimators $f_{NL}$. We perform this analysis simulating a large number of temperature maps with Planck-like resolution (lmax $= …
We introduce an exact Bayesian approach to search for non-Gaussianity of local type in Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation data. Using simulated CMB temperature maps, the newly developed technique is compared against the conventional frequentist bispectrum estimator. Starting from the joint probability distribution, we obtain analytic expressions for the conditional probabilities of the primordial perturbations given the data, and for the level of non-Gaussianity, f_nl, given the data and the perturbations. We propose Hamiltonian Monte Carlo sampling as a means to derive realizations o…
We constrain the primordial non-Gaussianity parameter of the local model f_{NL} using the skewness power spectrum associated with the two-to-one cumulant correlator of cosmic microwave background temperature anisotropies. This bispectrum-related power spectrum was constructed after weighting the temperature map with the appropriate window functions to form an estimator that probes the multipolar dependence of the underlying bispectrum associated with the primordial non-Gaussianity. We also estimate a separate skewness power spectrum sensitive more strongly to unresolved point sources. When com…
We study how primordial non-Gaussianity affects the pairwise velocity probability density function (PDF) using an analytical model and cosmological N-body simulations. We adopt the local type non-Gaussian models characterized by f_{nl}, and examine both the linear velocity difference PDF and the linear pairwise velocity PDF. We show explicitly how f_{nl} induces correlations between originally independent velocities along the parallel and the perpendicular to the line of separation directions. We compare the model results with measurements from N-body simulations of the non-Gaussian models. Li…
We review the basic hypotheses which motivate the statistical framework used to analyze the cosmic microwave background, and how that framework can be enlarged as we relax those hypotheses. In particular, we try to separate as much as possible the questions of gaussianity, homogeneity and isotropy from each other. We focus both on isotropic estimators of non-gaussianity as well as statistically anisotropic estimators of gaussianity, giving particular emphasis on their signatures and the enhanced "cosmic variances" that become increasingly important as our putative Universe becomes less symmetr…
We utilize the Canny edge detection algorithm as an estimator for primordial non-Gaussianities. In preliminary tests on simulated sky patches with a window size of 57 degrees and multipole moments $l$ up to 1024, we find a $3σ$ distinction between maps with local non-Gaussianity $f_{NL}=350$ (or $f_{NL}=-700$) and Gaussian maps. We present evidence that high resolution CMB studies will strongly enhance the sensitivity of the Canny algorithm to non-Gaussianity, making it a promising technique to estimate primordial non-Gaussianity.
We use the binned bispectrum estimator to determine the bispectra of the dust, free-free, synchrotron, and AME galactic foregrounds using maps produced by the Commander component separation method from Planck 2015 data. We find that all of these peak in the squeezed configuration, allowing for potential confusion with in particular the local primordial shape. Applying an additional functionality implemented in the binned bispectrum estimator code, we then use these galactic bispectra as templates in an $f_\mathrm{NL}$ analysis of other maps. After testing and validating the method and code wit…
Large-scale Fourier modes of the cosmic density field are of great value for learning about cosmology because of their well-understood relationship to fluctuations in the early universe. However, cosmic variance generally limits the statistical precision that can be achieved when constraining model parameters using these modes as measured in galaxy surveys, and moreover, these modes are sometimes inaccessible due to observational systematics or foregrounds. For some applications, both limitations can be circumvented by reconstructing large-scale modes using the correlations they induce between…
Two of the most commonly used tools to constrain the primordial non-Gaussianity are the bispectrum and the Minkowski functionals of CMB temperature anisotropies. These two measures of non-Gaussianity in principle provide distinct (though correlated) information, but in the past constraints from them have only been loosely compared, and not statistically combined. In this work we evaluate, for the first time, the covariance matrix between the local non-Gaussianity coefficient fnl estimated through the bispectrum and Minkowski functionals. We find that the estimators are positively correlated, w…
Cosmic microwave background observations are most commonly analyzed by estimating the power spectrum. In the limit where the CMB statistics are perfectly Gaussian, this extracts all the information, but the CMB also contains detectable non-Gaussian contributions from secondary, and possibly primordial, sources. We review possible sources of CMB non-Gaussianity and describe statistical techniques which are optimized for measuring them, complementing the power spectrum analysis. The machinery of $N$-point correlation functions provides a unifying framework for optimal estimation of primordial no…
We constrain the amplitude of primordial non-Gaussianity in the CMB data taking into account the presence of foreground residuals in the maps. We generalise the needlet bispectrum estimator marginalizing over the amplitudes of thermal dust, free-free and synchrotron templates. We apply our procedure to WMAP 5 year data, finding fNL= 38\pm 47 (1 σ), while the analysis without marginalization provides fNL= 35\pm 42. Splitting the marginalization over each foreground separately, we found that the estimates of fNL are positively cross correlated of 17%, 12% with the dust and synchrotron respective…
We study the impact of correlated instrumental noise and non-circular antenna beam patterns on primordial non-Gaussianity analysis. The two systematic effects are reproduced in the case of the Planck mission, using Planck-like realistic simulations. The non-Gaussian analysis is conducted with different approaches. First we adopt a blind approach, using the Spherical Mexican Hat Wavelet and the Minkowski functionals, and then a fNL estimator. We look respectively for false primordial non-Gaussian detections and for bias or variance increase in the estimated fNL value. Even if some slight effect…
We use the full bispectrum of spherical needlets applied to the WMAP data of the cosmic microwave background as an estimator for the primordial non-Gaussianity parameter f_NL. We use needlet scales up to l_max=1000 and the KQ75 galactic cut and find f_NL=84 +/- 40 corrected for point source bias. We also introduce a set of consistency tests to validate our results against the possible influence of foreground residuals or systematic errors. In particular, fluctuations in the value of f_NL obtained from different frequency channels, different masks and different multipoles are tested against sim…
Estimators for weak lensing observables such as shear and convergence generally have non-linear corrections, which, in principle, make weak lensing power spectra sensitive to primordial non-Gaussianity. In this paper, we quantitatively evaluate these contributions for weak lensing auto- and cross-correlation power spectra, and show that they are strongly suppressed by projection effects. This is a consequence of the central limit theorem, which suppresses departures from Gaussianity when the projection reaches over several correlation lengths of the density field, L_P~55 [Mpc/h]. Furthermore, …
We revisit the predictions for the expected Cosmic Microwave Background bispectrum signal from the primary-lensing-Rees-Sciama correlation; we point out that it can be a significant contaminant to the bispectrum signal from primordial non-Gaussianity of the local type. This non-Gaussianity, usually parameterized by the non-Gaussian parameter f_NL, arises, for example, in multi-field inflation. In particular both signals are frequency independent, and are maximized for nearly squeezed configurations. While their detailed scale-dependence and harmonic imprints are different for generic bispectru…
Cosmic microwave background studies of non-Gaussianity involving higher-order multispectra can distinguish between early universe theories that predict nearly identical power spectra. However, the recovery of higher-order multispectra is difficult from realistic data due to their complex response to inhomogeneous noise and partial sky coverage, which are often difficult to model analytically. A traditional alternative is to use one-point cumulants of various orders, which collapse the information present in a multispectrum to one number. The disadvantage of such a radical compression of the da…
In the last few decades, advances in observational cosmology have given us a standard model of cosmology. We know the content of the universe to within a few percent. With more ambitious experiments on the way, we hope to move beyond the knowledge of what the universe is made of, to why the universe is the way it is. In this review paper we focus on primordial non-Gaussianity as a probe of the physics of the dynamics of the universe at the very earliest moments. We discuss 1) theoretical predictions from inflationary models and their observational consequences in the cosmic microwave backgroun…
Considerable recent attention has focussed on the prospects to use the cosmic microwave background (CMB) trispectrum to probe the physics of the early universe. Here we evaluate the probability distribution function (PDF) for the standard estimator tau_nle for the amplitude tau_nl of the CMB trispectrum both for the null-hypothesis (i.e., for Gaussian maps with tau_nl = 0) and for maps with a non-vanishing trispectrum (|tau_nl|>0). We find these PDFs to be highly non-Gaussian in both cases. We also evaluate the variance with which the trispectrum amplitude can be measured, <tau_nle^2>, as a fu…
The most direct probe of non-Gaussian initial conditions has come from bispectrum measurements of temperature fluctuations in the Cosmic Microwave Background and of the matter and galaxy distribution at large scales. Such bispectrum estimators are expected to continue to provide the best constraints on the non-Gaussian parameters in future observations. We review and compare the theoretical and observational problems, current results and future prospects for the detection of a non-vanishing primordial component in the bispectrum of the Cosmic Microwave Background and large-scale structure, and…
Evolution and abundance of the large-scale structures we observe today, such as clusters of galaxies, is sensitive to the statistical properties of dark matter primordial density fluctuations, which is assumed to follow a Gaussian probability distribution function. Within this assumption, a significant disagreement have been found between clusters counts made by Planck and their prediction when calibrated by CMB angular power spectrum. The purpose of this work is to relax the Gaussianty assumption and test if Non-Gaussianity in dark matter primordial density fluctuations, could alleviate the t…
We present forecasts on the primordial non-Gaussianity parameter $f_\text{NL}$ of feature models for the future Cosmic Microwave Background Stage-4 (CMB-S4) experiments. The Fisher matrix of the bispectrum estimator was computed using noise covariances expected for preliminary CMB-S4 specifications including ones for the Simons Observatory. We introduce a novel method that improves the computation by orthonormalising the covariance matrix. The most sensitive CMB-S4 experiment with 1' beam and 1$μK$-arcmin noise would yield a factor of 1.7-2.2 times more stringent constraints compared to Planck…
Galaxy clustering data from current and upcoming large scale structure surveys can provide strong constraints on primordial non-Gaussianity through the scale-dependent halo bias. To fully exploit the information from galaxy surveys, optimal analysis methods need to be developed and applied to the data. Since the halo bias is sensitive to local non-Gaussianity predominately at large scales, the volume of a given survey is crucial. Consequently, for such analyses we do not want to split into redshift bins, which would lead to information loss due to edge effects, but instead analyse the full sam…
The strongest non-Gaussianity in single-scalar potential models of inflation is associated with features in the power spectrum. We stress the importance of accurately modelling the expected signal in order for the standard estimator to minimize contamination by random noise. We present explicit formulae which improve on the approximation introduced by Adshead, Hu, Dvorkin and Peiris. We also compare with a simple, analytic model of the first feature, and quantify our results using the correlators of Hung, Fergusson and Shellard.
In this brief paper we revisit the Fisher information content of cosmological power spectra or two-point functions of Gaussian fields in order to comment on the assumption of Gaussian estimators and the use of parameter-dependent covariance matrices for parameter inference in the context of precision cosmology. Even though the assumption of a Gaussian likelihood is motivated by the central limit theorem, we discuss that it leads to Fisher information content that violates the Cramér-Rao bound if used consistently, owing to independent but artificial information from the parameter-dependent cov…
In the current era of high-precision CMB experiments, the imprint of gravitational lensing on the CMB temperature is exploited as a source of valuable information. Especially the reconstruction of the lensing potential power spectrum is of great interest. The reconstruction from the optimal quadratic estimator of the lensing potential, though, is biased. As long as the intrinsic CMB fluctuations are Gaussian this bias is well understood and controlled. In the presence of non-Gaussian primordial curvature perturbations, however, the CMB also acquires a non-Gaussian structure mimicking the lensi…
A detection or non detection of primordial non--Gaussianity (NG) by using the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB) is a possible way to break the degeneracy of early universe models. Since a single statistical estimator hardly can be sensitive to all possible forms of NG which may be present in the data, it is important to use different statistical estimators to study NG in CMB. Recently, two new large-angle NG indicators based on skewness and kurtosis of spherical caps or spherical cells of CMB sky have been proposed and used in both CMB data and simulated maps. Here, we make a compara…
We show how cross-correlating a high redshift external tracer field, such as the 21cm neutral hydrogen distribution and product maps involving Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature and polarisation fields, that probe mixed bispectrum involving these fields, can help to determine the reionization history of the Universe, beyond what can be achieved from cross-spectrum analysis. Taking clues from recent studies for the detection of primordial non-Gaussianity (Munshi & Heavens 2010), we develop a set of estimators that can study reionization using a power spectrum associated with the bisp…
We present constraints on local primordial non-Gaussianity (PNG), parametrized through $f^{\rm loc}_{\rm NL}$, using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey Data Release 14 quasar sample. We measure and analyze the anisotropic clustering of the quasars in Fourier space, testing for the scale-dependent bias introduced by primordial non-Gaussianity on large scales. We derive and employ a power spectrum estimator using optimal weights that account for the redshift evolution of the PNG signal. We find constraints of $-51<f^{\rm loc}_{\rm NL}<21$ at 95% conf…
A new method to constrain the local non-linear coupling parameter fNL based on a fast wavelet decomposition is presented. Using a multiresolution wavelet adapted to the HEALPix pixelization, we have developed a method that is 10^2 times faster than previous estimators based on isotropic wavelets and 10^3 faster than the KSW bispectrum estimator, at the resolution of the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) data. The method has been applied to the WMAP 7-yr V+W combined map, imposing constraints on fNL of -69 < fNL < 65 at the 95 per cent CL. This result has been obtained after correctin…
We derive a general expression for the probability of observing deviations from statistical isotropy in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) if the primordial fluctuations are non-Gaussian and extend to superhorizon scales. The primary motivation is to properly characterize the monopole and dipole modulations of the primordial power spectrum that are generated by the coupling between superhorizon and subhorizon perturbations. Unlike previous proposals for generating the hemispherical power asymmetry, we do not assume that the power asymmetry results from a single large superhorizon mode. Inst…
We present an approximate calculation of the full Bayesian posterior probability distribution for the local non-Gaussianity parameter $f_{\text{nl}}$ from observations of cosmic microwave background anisotropies within the framework of information field theory. The approximation that we introduce allows us to dispense with numerically expensive sampling techniques. We use a novel posterior validation method (DIP test) in cosmology to test the precision of our method. It transfers inaccuracies of the calculated posterior into deviations from a uniform distribution for a specially constructed te…
The epoch of reionization (EoR) 21-cm signal is expected to be highly non-Gaussian in nature and this non-Gaussianity is also expected to evolve with the progressing state of reionization. Therefore the signal will be correlated between different Fourier modes ($k$). The power spectrum will not be able capture this correlation in the signal. We use a higher-order estimator -- the bispectrum -- to quantify this evolving non-Gaussianity. We study the bispectrum using an ensemble of simulated 21-cm signal and with a large variety of $k$ triangles. We observe two competing sources driving the non-…
In a recently published article, we quantified the impact of primordial non-Gaussianity on the probability of giant-arc formation. In that work, we focused on the local form of non-Gaussianity and found that it can have only a modest effect given the most recent constraints from Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) measurements. Here, we present new calculations using a parameterization of scale-dependent non-Gaussianity in which the primordial bispectrum has the equilateral shape and the effective f_NL parameter depends on scale. We find that non-Gaussianity of this type can yield a larger effec…
We introduce the numbers of hot and cold spots, $n_h$ and $n_c$, of excursion sets of the CMB temperature anisotropy maps as statistical observables that can discriminate different non-Gaussian models. We numerically compute them from simulations of non-Gaussian CMB temperature fluctuation maps. The first kind of non-Gaussian model we study is the local type primordial non-Gaussianity. The second kind of models have some specific form of the probability distribution function from which the temperature fluctuation value at each pixel is drawn, obtained using HEALPIX. We find the characteristic …
The recent weak lensing measurement of the dark matter mass of the high-redshift galaxy cluster XMMUJ2235.3-2557 of (8.5 +- 1.7) x 10^{14} Msun at z=1.4, indicates that, if the cluster is assumed to be the result of the collapse of dark matter in a primordial gaussian field in the standard LCDM model, then its abundance should be < 0.002 clusters in the observed area. Here we investigate how to boost the probability of XMMUJ2235.3-2557 in particular resorting to deviations from Gaussian initial conditions. We show that this abundance can be boosted by factors > 3-10 if the non-Gaussianity para…
