Soliton dynamics in a large variety of longitudinally modulated lattices are studied in terms of phase space analysis for an effective particle approach and direct numerical simulations. Complex soliton dynamics are shown to depend strongly on both their power/width and their initial momentum as well as on lattice parameters. A rish set of qualitatively distinct dynamical features of soliton propagation that have no counterpart in longitudinally uniform lattices is illustrated. This set includes cases of enhanced soliton mobility, dynamical switching, extended trapping in several transverse lattice periods, and quasiperiodic trapping, which are promising for soliton control applications.
Resonant Y-shaped soliton solutions to the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili II (KPII) equation are modelled as shock solutions to an infinite family of modulation conservation laws. The fully two-dimensional soliton modulation equations, valid in the zero dispersion limit of the KPII equation, are demonstrated to reduce to a one-dimensional system. In this same limit, the rapid transition from the larger Y soliton stem to the two smaller legs limits to a travelling discontinuity. This discontinuity is a multivalued, weak solution satisfying modified Rankine-Hugoniot jump conditions for the one-dimension…
The generation of high-intensity optical fields from harmonic-wave photons, interacting via a cross-phase modulation with dark solitons both propagating in a Kerr nonlinear medium, is examined. The focus is on a pump consisting of time-entangled dark-soliton patterns, forming a periodic waveguide along the path of the harmonic-wave probe. It is shown that an increase of the strength of cross-phase modulation respective to the self-phase modulation, favors soliton-mode proliferation in the bound-state spectrum of the trapped harmonic-wave probe. The induced soliton modes, which display the stru…

The interaction of an oblique line soliton with a one-dimensional dynamic mean flow is analyzed using the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili II (KPII) equation. Building upon previous studies that examined the transmission or trapping of a soliton by a slowly varying rarefaction or oscillatory dispersive shock wave in one space and one time dimension, this paper allows for the incident soliton to approach the changing mean flow at a nonzero oblique angle. By deriving invariant quantities of the soliton-mean flow modulation equations$-$a system of three (1+1)-dimensional quasilinear, hyperbolic equations f…
We introduce multi-soliton sets in the two-dimensional medium with the second-harmonic-generating nonlinearity subject to spatial modulation in the form of a triangle of singular peaks. Various families of symmetric and asymmetric sets are constructed, and their stability is investigated. Stable symmetric patterns may be built of 1, 4, or 7 individual solitons, while stable asymmetric ones contain 1, 2, or 3 solitons. Symmetric and asymmetric patterns may demonstrate mutual bistability. The shift of the asymmetric single-soliton state from the central position is accurately predicted analytica…
We studied generation and dynamics of solitonic pulses, platicons, at normal group velocity dispersion due to the pump amplitude modulation. We proposed, that if the required frequency of amplitude modulation is too large for available modulators, it is possible to use subharmonic phase modulation for platicon generation. It was also demonstrated that it is possible to control the repetition rate of platicons by tuning modulation frequency. Tuning range for platicons was found to be much wider than for bright solitons. We also studied the influence of the high-order dispersion on platicon prop…
Interactions between solitons and the coherent oscillation structures generated by localized disturbances via modulational instability are studied within the framework of the focusing nonlinear Schrodinger equation. Two main interaction regimes are identified based on the relative value of the velocity of the incident soliton compared to the amplitude of the background: soliton transmission and soliton trapping. Specifically, when the incident soliton velocity exceeds a certain threshold, the soliton passes through the coherent structure and emerges on the other side with its velocity unchange…
Stabilization of bright solitons and vortex solitons in a trapless three-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate by temporal modulation of the scattering length
The dynamics of light beams in the nonlinear optical media with periodically modulated in the longitudinal direction parity-time distribution of the complex refractive index is investigated. The possibility of dynamical stabilization of PT-symmetric solitons is demonstrated.
We study long nonlinear longitudinal bulk strain waves in a hyperelastic rod of circular cross section within the scope of the general weakly-nonlinear elasticity leading to a model with quadratic and cubic nonlinearities. We systematically derive the extended Boussinesq and Korteweg - de Vries - type equations and construct a family of approximate weakly-nonlinear soliton solutions with the help of near-identity transformations. These solutions are compared with the results of direct numerical simulations of the original nonlinear problem formulation, showing excellent agreement within the ra…
In this work, we introduce a method for stabilizing spatiotemporal solitons. These solitons correspond to light bullets in multimode optical fiber lasers, energy-scalable waveguide oscillators and amplifiers, localized coherent patterns in Bose-Einstein condensates, etc. We show that a three-dimensional confinement potential, formed by a spatial transverse (radial) parabolic graded refractive index and dissipation profile, combined with quadratic temporal phase modulation, may permit the generation of stable spatiotemporal dissipative solitons. This corresponds to combining phase mode-locking …
Breather transition dynamics, Peregrine combs/walls and modulation instability in a variable-coefficient nonlinear Schrödinger equation with higher-order effects
We investigate theoretically the fundamental phenomenon of the spontaneous, noise-induced modulational instability (MI) of a plane wave. The long-term statistical properties of the noise-induced MI have been previously observed in experiments and in simulations but have not been explained so far. In the framework of inverse scattering transform (IST), we propose a model of the asymptotic stage of the noise-induced MI based on $N$-soliton solutions ($N$-SS) of the integrable focusing one-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation (1D-NLSE). These $N$-SS are bound states of strongly interacting …
To study controlled evolution of non-autonomous matter-wave solitons in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates with spatiotemporal modulation, we focus on a system of three coupled Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equations with space-time-dependent external potentials and temporally modulated gain/loss distributions. An integrability condition and a non-isospectral Lax pair for the coupled GP equations are obtained. Using it, we derive an infinite set of dynamical invariants, the first two of which are the mass and momentum. The Darboux transform is used to generate one- and two-soliton solutions. Under the a…
We analyze temporal and spectral characteristics of Akhmediev breather and establish amplification and transmission of attenuated multi-soliton in nonlinear optical fiber. Our results show that the attenuated multi-soliton can be converted into Akhmediev breather through a judicious modulation of the spectrum. Subsequently, the maximally compressed pulse train of Akhmediev breather can be used to establish a robust breathing transmission by another spectrum modulation. In addition, the influence of the spectral modulation intensity on the excitation of Akhmediev breather and transmission of ma…
We develop stability analysis for matter-wave solitons in a two-dimensional (2D) Bose-Einstein condensate loaded in an optical lattice (OL), to which periodic time modulation is applied, in different forms. The stability is studied by dint of the variational approximation and systematic simulations. For solitons in the semi-infinite gap, well-defined stability patterns are produced under the action of the attractive nonlinearity, clearly exhibiting the presence of resonance frequencies. The analysis is reported for several time-modulation formats, including the case of in-phase modulations of …
We report a droplet to a soliton crossover by tuning the external confinement potential in a dilute Bose-Eienstein condensate by numerically solving the modified Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The testimony of such a crossover is presented via studying the fractional density of the condensate which smoothly migrates from being a flat-head curve at weak confinement to a bright soliton at strong confinement. Such a transition occurs across a region of the potential whose strength varies over an order of magnitude and thus should be fit to be termed as a crossover. We supplement our studies via explo…
We experimentally study universal nonequilibrium dynamics of two-dimensional atomic Bose gases quenched from repulsive to attractive interactions. We observe the manifestation of modulational instability that, instead of causing collapse, fragments a large two-dimensional superfluid into multiple wave packets universally around a threshold atom number necessary for the formation of Townes solitons. We confirm that the density distributions of quench-induced solitary waves are in excellent agreement with the stationary Townes profiles. Furthermore, our density measurements in the space and time…
