In an article "Missing Transverse-Doppler Effect in Time-Dilation Experiments with High-Speed Ions" by S. Devasia [arXiv:1003.2970v1], our recent Doppler shift experiments on fast ion beams are reanalyzed. Contrary to our analysis, Devasia concludes that our results provide an "indication of Lorentz violation". We argue that this conclusion is based on a fundamental misunderstanding of our experimental scheme and reiterate that our results are in excellent agreement with Special Relativity.
We present the concluding result from an Ives-Stilwell-type time dilation experiment using 7Li+ ions confined at a velocity of beta = v/c = 0.338 in the storage ring ESR at Darmstadt. A Lambda-type three-level system within the hyperfine structure of the 7Li+ triplet S1-P2 line is driven by two laser beams aligned parallel and antiparallel relative to the ion beam. The lasers' Doppler shifted frequencies required for resonance are measured with an accuracy of < 4 ppb using optical-optical double resonance spectroscopy. This allows us to verify the Special Relativity relation between the time d…
Doppler cooling with lasers is essential to ions' trapping and also a preliminary step towards achievement of ultracold ions. Due to lack of effective tools, experimentally monitoring the ions' temperature and the laser-ion coupling is difficult in Doppler cooling. Here we analytically explore the Doppler cooling process of trapped ions, exemplified by $^{40}$Ca$^{+}$, by solving the friction coefficient in the Doppler cooling with respect to a thermal bath, particularly, to a bath with large heating rate. We show four regions for cooling and heating induced by the three-level electromagnetica…
We propose and demonstrate a new method for Doppler cooling trapped-ion crystals where the distribution of micromotion amplitudes may be large and uneven. The technique uses pulses of Doppler cooling light synchronized with the trap RF that selectively target ions when their velocity is near a node, leading to more uniform cooling across a crystal by a single tone of cooling light. We lay out a theoretical framework that describes where this technique is practical, and provide a simple experimental demonstration.
Doppler broadening plays an important role in laser rovibrational spectroscopy of trapped deuterated molecular hydrogen ions (HD$^+$), even at the millikelvin temperatures achieved through sympathetic cooling by laser-cooled beryllium ions. Recently, Biesheuvel \textit{et al.} \cite{Biesheuvel2016} presented a theoretical lineshape model for such transitions which not only considers linestrengths and Doppler broadening, but also the finite sample size and population redistribution by blackbody radiation, which are important in view of the long storage and probe times achievable in ion traps. H…
We study the Doppler-cooling of radial two-dimensional (2D) Coulomb crystals of trapped barium ions in a radiofrequency trap. Ions in radial 2D crystals experience micromotion of an amplitude that increases linearly with the distance from the trap center, leading to a position-dependent frequency modulation of laser light in each ion's rest frame. We use two tones of Doppler-cooling laser light separated by approximately 100~MHz to efficiently cool distinct regions in the crystals with differing amplitudes of micromotion. This technique allows us to trap and cool more than 50 ions populating 4…
Quantum time dilation occurs when a clock moves in a superposition of relativistic momentum wave packets. We utilize the lifetime of an excited hydrogen-like atom as a clock to demonstrate how quantum time dilation manifests in a spontaneous emission process. The resulting emission rate differs when compared to the emission rate of an atom prepared in a mixture of momentum wave packets at order $v^2/c^2$. This effect is accompanied by a quantum correction to the Doppler shift due to the coherence between momentum wave packets. This quantum Doppler shift affects the spectral line shape at order…
We report the design and experimental demonstration of a compact, reconfigurable Penning ion trap constructed with rare-earth permanent magnets placed outside of a trap vacuum enclosure. We describe the first observation of Doppler laser cooling of ions in a permanent magnet Penning trap. We detail a method for quantifying and optimizing the trap magnetic field uniformity in situ using a thermal beam of neutral $^{40}$Ca precursor atoms. Doppler laser cooling of $^{40}$Ca$^+$ is carried out at 0.65~T, and side-view images of trapped ion fluorescence show crystalline order for both two- and thr…
The accurate evaluation of the second-order Doppler frequency shift (SODFS) of trapped ions in a linear Paul trap has been studied with experiments and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The motion of trapped ions in the trap has three contributions, and we focus on the ion excess micromotion, which is rarely discussed when evaluating the SODFS. Based on the hypothesis that the ion density is uniformly distributed in the radial direction, we propose a new model to accurately evaluate the total SODFS for ion microwave clocks. The effectiveness of the model has been verified both in simulation…
We describe a simple approach to the problem of incorporating the response time of an atom or ion being Doppler-cooled into the theory of the cooling process. The system being cooled does not in general respond instantly to the changing laser frequencies it experiences in its rest frame, and this "dynamic effect" can affect significantly the temperatures attainable. It is particularly important for trapped ions when there is a slow decay out of the cooling cycle requiring the use of a repumping beam. We treat the cases of trapped ions with two and three internal states, then apply the theory t…
We demonstrate simple and robust methods for Doppler cooling and obtaining high fluorescence from trapped 43Ca+ ions at a magnetic field of 146 Gauss. This field gives access to a magnetic-field-independent "atomic clock" qubit transition within the ground level hyperfine structure of the ion, but also causes the complex internal structure of the 64 states relevant to Doppler cooling to be spread over many times the atomic transition line-width. Using a time-dependent optical Bloch equation simulation of the system we develop a simple scheme to Doppler-cool the ion on a two-photon dark resonan…
Trapped-ion optical clocks are capable of achieving systematic fractional frequency uncertainties of $10^{-18}$ and possibly below. However, the stability of current ion clocks is fundamentally limited by the weak signal of single-ion interrogation. We present an operational, scalable platform for extending clock spectroscopy to arrays of Coulomb crystals consisting of several tens of ions, while allowing systematic shifts as low as $10^{-19}$. Using a newly developed technique, we observe 3D excess micromotion amplitudes inside a Coulomb crystal with atomic spatial resolution and sub-nanomete…
The system of a trapped ion translationally excited by a blue-detuned near-resonant laser, sometimes described as an instance of a phonon laser, has recently received attention as interesting in its own right and for its application to non-destructive readout of internal states of non-fluorescing ions. Previous theoretical work has been limited to cases of two-level ions. Here, we perform simulations to study the dynamics of a phonon laser involving the $Λ$-type $^{138}\mbox{Ba}^{+}$ ion, in which coherent population trapping effects lead to different behavior than in the previously studied ca…

A direct numerical simulation of many interacting ions in a Penning trap with a rotating wall is presented. The ion dynamics is modelled classically. Both axial and planar Doppler laser cooling are modeled using stochastic momentum impulses based on two-level atomic scattering rates. The plasmas being modeled are ultra-cold two-dimensional crystals made up of 100's of ions. We compare Doppler cooled results directly to a previous linear eigenmodes analysis. Agreement in both frequency and mode structure are obtained. Additionally, when Doppler laser cooling is applied, the laser cooled steady …
Sympathetic cooling of trapped ions has been established as a powerful technique for manipulation of non-laser-coolable ions (Raizen1992,Waki1992,Bowe1999,Barrett2003). For molecular ions, it promises vastly enhanced spectroscopic resolution and accuracy. However, this potential remains untapped so far, with the best resolution achieved being not better than $5\times10^{-8}$ fractionally, due to residual Doppler broadening being present in ion clusters even at the lowest achievable translational temperatures (Bressel2012). Here we introduce a general and accessible approach that enables Dopple…
The optical manipulation of Ba$^{+}$ ions is mainly performed by a 493 nm laser for the S$_{1/2}$-P$_{1/2}$ transition and a 650 nm laser for the P$_{1/2}$-D$_{3/2}$ transition. Since the branching ratio between the 493 nm and 650 nm transitions of a single Ba$^{+}$ ion is comparable, stabilization systems of both lasers are equally important for Doppler cooling, sub-Doppler cooling, optical pumping and state detection. The stabilization system of a 493 nm laser to an absolute Te$_2$ reference has been well established. However, the stabilization of a 650 nm laser has not been presented before…
The time evolution of a closed quantum system is connected to its Hamiltonian through Schroedinger's equation. The ability to estimate the Hamiltonian is critical to our understanding of quantum systems, and allows optimization of control. Though spectroscopic methods allow time-independent Hamiltonians to be recovered, for time-dependent Hamiltonians this task is more challenging. Here, using a single trapped ion, we experimentally demonstrate a method for estimating a time-dependent Hamiltonian of a single qubit. The method involves measuring the time evolution of the qubit in a fixed basis …
Optical spectroscopy in the gas phase is a key tool to elucidate the structure of atoms and molecules and of their interaction with external fields. The line resolution is usually limited by a combination of first-order Doppler broadening due to particle thermal motion and of a short transit time through the excitation beam. For trapped particles, suitable laser cooling techniques can lead to strong confinement (Lamb-Dicke regime, LDR) and thus to optical spectroscopy free of these effects. For non-laser coolable spectroscopy ions, this has so far only been achieved when trapping one or two at…
The ion microwave frequency standard is a candidate for the next generation of microwave frequency standard with the potential for very wide applications. The Dick effect and second-order Doppler frequency shift (SODFS) limit the performance of ion microwave frequency standards. The introduction of sympathetic cooling technology can suppress the Dick effect and SODFS and improve the stability and accuracy of the frequency standard. However, the sympathetically-cooled ion microwave frequency standard has seldom been studied before. This paper reports the first sympathetically-cooled ion microwa…
The parity nonconservation (PNC) effect on the laser-induced 2^3S_1 - 2^1S_0 transition in heavy heliumlike ions is considered. A simple analytical formula for the PNC correction to the cross section is derived for the case, when the opposite-parity 2^1S_0 and 2^3P_0 states are almost degenerate and, therefore, the PNC effect is strongly enhanced. Numerical results are presented for heliumlike gadolinium and thorium, which seem most promising candidates for such kind of experiments. In both Gd and Th cases the photon energy required will be anticipated with a high-energy laser built at GSI. Al…
We have measured the energies of the strongest 1s-2ell (ell=s,p) transitions in He- through Ne-like silicon and sulfur ions to an accuracy of better than 1eV using Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory's electron beam ion traps, EBIT-I and SuperEBIT, and the NASA/GSFC EBIT Calorimeter Spectrometer (ECS). We identify and measure the energies of 18 and 21 X-ray features from silicon and sulfur, respectively. The results are compared to new Flexible Atomic Code calculations and to semi-relativistic Hartree Fock calculations by Palmeri et al. (2008). These results will be especially useful for wi…
Cooling and detection schemes using laser cooling and methods of quantum logic can contribute to high precision CPT symmetry tests in the baryonic sector. This work introduces an experiment to sympathetically cool protons and antiprotons using the Coulomb interaction with a $^9$Be$^+$ ion trapped in a nearby but separate potential well. We have designed and set up an apparatus to show such coupling between two identical ions for the first time in a Penning trap. In this paper, we present evidence for successful loading and Doppler cooling of clouds and single ions. Our coupling scheme has appl…
We give a brief overview of time dilation tests using high-resolution laser spectroscopy at heavy-ion storage rings. We reflect on the various methods used to eliminate the first-order Doppler effect and on the pitfalls encountered, and comment on possible extensions at future facilities providing relativistic heavy ion beams at $γ\gg 1$.
For exploration of quantum effects with hybrid atom-ion systems, reaching ultracold temperatures is the major limiting factor. In this work, we present results on numerical simulations of trapped ion buffer gas cooling using an ultracold atomic gas in a large number of experimentally realistic scenarios. We explore the suppression of micromotion-induced heating effects through optimization of trap parameters for various radio-frequency (rf) traps and rf driving schemes including linear and octupole traps, digital Paul traps, rotating traps and hybrid optical/rf traps. We find that very similar…
