We consider application of the discrete Fourier transform-spread orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (DFT-spread OFDM) technique to high-speed fiber optic communications. The DFT-spread OFDM is a form of single-carrier technique that possesses almost all advantages of the multicarrier OFDM technique (such as high spectral efficiency, flexible bandwidth allocation, low sampling rate and low-complexity equalization). In particular, we consider the optical DFT-spread OFDM system with polarization division multiplexing (PDM) that employs a tone-by-tone linear minimum mean square error (MMSE) equalizer. We show that such a system offers a much lower peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) performance as well as better bit error rate (BER) performance compared with the optical OFDM system that employs amplitude clipping.
In this study, we compare the single-carrier (SC) waveform adopted in IEEE 802.11ad and unique word discrete Fourier transform spread orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (UW DFT-s-OFDM) waveform. We provide equivalent representations of up-sampling and down-sampling operations of the SC waveform by using discrete Fourier transform (DFT) and inverse DFT to enable explicit comparison of these two similar waveforms. By using this representation, we discuss why the IEEE 802.11ad SC waveform can cause suboptimal performance in multipath channel and discuss how to improve it with UW DFT-s-OFD…
The fifth generation (5G) wireless standard will support several new use cases and 10 to 100 times the performance of fourth generation (4G) systems. Because of the diverse applications for 5G, flexible solutions which can address conflicting requirements will be needed. In this paper, we propose a solution which enables the use of discrete Fourier transform spread orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DFT-s-OFDM) and OFDM, which address different requirements, using a common reference symbol (RS) design. In this solution, the DFT-s-OFDM symbol contains RSs in the frequency domain that m…
In this study, we propose a framework for chirp-based communications by exploiting discrete Fourier transform-spread orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DFT-s-OFDM). We show that a well-designed frequency-domain spectral shaping (FDSS) filter for DFT-s-OFDM can convert its single-carrier nature to a linear combination of chirps circularly translated in the time domain. Also, by exploiting the properties of the Fourier series and Bessel function of the first kind, we analytically obtain the FDSS filter for an arbitrary chirp. We theoretically show that the chirps with low ripples in the…
This paper proposes a novel maximum Doppler spread estimation algorithm for OFDM systems with the comb-type pilot pattern. By tracking the drifting delay subspace of the multipath channel, the time correlation function is measured at a high accuracy, which accordingly improves the estimation accuracy of the maximum Doppler spread considerably.
A novel maximum Doppler spread estimation algorithm for OFDM systems with comb-type pilot pattern is presented in this paper. By tracking the drifting delay subspace of time-varying multipath channels, a Doppler dependent parameter can be accurately measured and further expanded and transformed into a non-linear high-order polynomial equation, from which the maximum Doppler spread is readily solved by resorting to the Newton's method. Its performance is demonstrated by simulations.
In this study, we propose an over-the-air computation (AirComp) scheme for federated edge learning (FEEL) without channel state information (CSI) at the edge devices (EDs) or the edge server (ES). The proposed scheme relies on non-coherent communication techniques for achieving distributed training by majority vote (MV). In this work, the votes, i.e., the signs of the local gradients, from the EDs are represented with the pulse-position modulation (PPM) symbols constructed with discrete Fourier transform (DFT)-spread orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) (DFT-s-OFDM). By taking the…
This paper describes the limiting behavior of linear and decision feedback equalizers (DFEs) in single/multiple antenna systems employing real/complex-valued modulation alphabets. The wideband frequency selective channel is modeled using a Rayleigh fading channel model with infinite number of time domain channel taps. Using this model, we show that the considered equalizers offer a fixed post signal-to-noise-ratio (post-SNR) at the equalizer output that is close to the matched filter bound (MFB). General expressions for the post-SNR are obtained for zero-forcing (ZF) based conventional receive…
In this paper, we make an investigation on the sum-mean-square-error (sum-MSE) performance gain achieved by DFT-based least-square (LS) channel estimator over frequency-domain LS one in full-duplex OFDM system in the presence of colored interference and noise. The closed-form expression of the sum-MSE performance gain is given. Its simple upper and lower bounds are derived by using inequalities of matrix eigen-values. By simulation and analysis, the upper lower bound is shown to be close to the exact value of MSE gain as the ratio of the number N of total subcarriers to the cyclic prefix lengt…
For future wireless communication technologies, an increase in capabilities such as throughput is strongly expected. Transmission in the sub-THz bands (>90 GHz) seems to be the potential solution to meet the ever-increasing capacity demands due to the large unexploited bandwidth. Oscillators used at these frequencies generate phase noise that induces critical distortions in the signal that must be addressed. The correlated nature of PN makes it difficult to overcome. Nowadays, there is a growing interest in considering the extension of multicarrier based waveforms of the 5G new radio for trans…
A novel OFDM-based waveform with low peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) and high robustness against phase noise (PN) is presented. It follows the discrete Fourier transform spread orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DFT-s-OFDM) signal model. 3MSK, is inspired by continuous-phase frequency shift keying (FSK), but it uses three frequencies in the baseband model -- specifically, 0 and $\pm f_{symbol}/4$, where $f_{symbol}$ is the symbol rate -- which effectively constrains the phase transitions between consecutive symbols to 0 and $\pm π/2$ rad. Motivated by the phase controlled model of …
This paper proposes a novel spread spectrum and sub-carrier index modulation (SS-SIM) scheme, which is integrated to orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) framework to enhance the diversity over the conventional IM schemes. Particularly, the resulting scheme, called SS-SIMOFDM, jointly employs both spread spectrum and sub-carrier index modulations to form a precoding vector which is then used to spread an M-ary complex symbol across all active sub-carriers. As a result, the proposed scheme enables a novel transmission of three signal domains: SS and sub-carrier indices, and a singl…
In this work, the delay limited capacity (DLC) of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems is investigated. The analysis is organized into two parts. In the first part, the impact of system parameters on the OFDM DLC is analyzed in a general setting. The main results are that under weak assumptions the maximum achievable single user DLC is almost independent of the distribution of the path attenuations in the low signal-to-noise (SNR) region but depends strongly on the delay spread. In the high SNR region the roles are exchanged. Here, the impact of delay spread is negligible …
The (inverse) discrete Fourier transform (DFT/IDFT) is often perceived as essential to orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. In this paper, a deep complex-valued convolutional network (DCCN) is developed to recover bits from time-domain OFDM signals without relying on any explicit DFT/IDFT. The DCCN can exploit the cyclic prefix (CP) of OFDM waveform for increased SNR by replacing DFT with a learned linear transform, and has the advantage of combining CP-exploitation, channel estimation, and intersymbol interference (ISI) mitigation, with a complexity of $\mathcal{O}(N^2)$…
We present a channel spectral estimator for OFDM signals containing pilot carriers, assuming a known delay spread or a bound on this parameter. The estimator is based on modeling the channel's spectrum as a band-limited function, instead of as the discrete Fourier transform of a tapped delay line (TDL). Its main advantage is its immunity to the truncation mismatch in usual TDL models (Gibbs phenomenon). In order to assess the estimator, we compare it with the well-known TDL maximum likelihood (ML) estimator in terms of root-mean-square (RMS) error. The main result is that the proposed estimato…

We consider the downlink of a MIMO-OFDM wireless systems where the base-station (BS) has M antennas and serves K single-antenna user terminals (UT) with K larger than or equal to M. Users estimate their channel vectors from common downlink pilot symbols and feed back a prediction, which is used by the BS to compute the linear beamforming matrix for the next time slot and to select the users to be served according to the proportional fair scheduling (PFS) algorithm. We consider a realistic physical channel model used as a benchmark in standardization and some alternatives for the channel estima…
In this paper, we propose a Doppler pre-compensation scheme for high-mobility orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) uplink, where a high-speed terminal transmits signals to the base station (BS). Considering that the time-varying multipath channel consists of multiple Doppler frequency offsets (DFOs) with different angle of departures (AoDs), we propose to perform DFO pre-compensation at the transmitter with a large-scale uniform linear array (ULA). The transmitted signal passes through a beamforming network with high-spatial resolution to produce multiple parallel branches. Each b…
This paper develops a low-complexity channel estimation (CE) scheme based on compressive sensing (CS) for time-domain synchronous (TDS) orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) to overcome the performance loss under doubly selective fading channels. Specifically, an overlap-add method of the time-domain training sequence is first proposed to obtain the coarse estimates of the channel length, path delays and path gains of the wireless channel, by exploiting the channel's temporal correlation to improve the robustness of the coarse CE under the severe fading channel with long delay spre…
In this paper, we propose a novel joint coding-modulation technique based on serial concatenation of orthogonal linear transform, such as discrete Fourier transform (DFT) or Walsh-Hadamard transform (WHT), with memoryless nonlinearity. We demonstrate that such a simple signal construction may exhibit properties of a random code ensemble, as a result approaching channel capacity. Our computer simulations confirm that if the decoder relies on a modified approximate message passing algorithm, the proposed modulation technique exhibits performance on par with state-of-the-art coded modulation sche…
Chirp waveform plays a significant role in radar and communication systems for its ability of pulse compression and spread spectrum. This paper presents a principle of orthogonally multiplexing a bank of linear chirp waveforms within the same bandwidth. The amplitude and phase of the chirps are modulated for information communication. As Fourier trans-form is the basis for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), Fresnel transform underlies the proposed orthogonal chirp division multiplexing (OCDM). Digital implementa-tion of the OCDM system using discrete Fresnel transform is propos…
Phase-noise (PN) estimation and compensation are crucial in millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication systems to achieve high reliability. The PN estimation, however, suffers from high computational complexity due to its fundamental characteristics, such as spectral spreading and fast-varying fluctuations. In this paper, we propose a new framework for low-complexity PN compensation in orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing systems. The proposed framework also includes a pilot allocation strategy to minimize its overhead. The key ideas are to exploit the coherence bandwidth of mmWave systems a…
