In this thesis a set of methods identifying minijet from final state particles in the relativistic heavy ion collision events is established and the parameter dependence has been investigated in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt s= 200$GeV using a multiphase transport model (AMPT). It is found that the number of minijets reduces with the increasing of collision parameter and raises with the increasing of c.m energy. Furthermore, we analyze the rapidity and momentum distribution inside minijets identified using this method.
We present a new observable zest and demonstrate its potential to differentiate between jets originated by gluons, top quark and vector bosons. Zest has salient properties such as boost invariance, stability against global color flow of partons and inclusion or exclusion of a few soft particles to the jet. For a gluon jet, zest distribution is also insensitive to the jet mass. We show that when zest is used in conjunction with other observables, it can yield high gluon rejection while retaining high signal sample.
A new approach to jet-shape identification based on linear regression is discussed. It is designed for searches for new particles at the TeV scale decaying hadronically with strongly collimated jets. We illustrate the method using a Monte Carlo simulation for pp collisions at the LHC with the goal to reduce the contribution of QCD-induced events. We focus on a rather generic example X to ttbar to hadrons, with X being a heavy particle, but the approach is well suited for reconstruction of other decay channels characterized by a cascade decay of known states.
We introduce a new jet observable {\em zest} defined on exclusively constructed jets and study its potential to discriminate jets originated from Standard Model heavy particles like $W,~Z$ bosons and top quark from gluon initiated jets. Zest exhibits properties such as boost invariance, stability against global color exchange among partons, and inclusion or exclusion of a few soft particles in the jet. We also observe that for gluon jets, zest distribution is mostly insensitive to the jet mass. These properties make zest a suitable candidate for vetoing gluon jets at the colliders. Zest when u…
We study the possibility of identifying a boosted resonance that decays into a charm pair against different sources of background using QCD event shapes, which are promoted to jet shapes. Using a set of jet shapes as input to a boosted decision tree, we find that observables utilizing the simultaneous presence of two charm quarks can access complementary information compared to approaches relying on two independent charm tags. Focusing on Higgs associated production with subsequent $H\to c \bar{c}$ decay and on a CP-odd scalar $A$ with $m_A \leq 10$ GeV we obtain the limits $\mathcal{B}r(H\rig…
This paper presents a novel method of searching for boosted hadronically decaying objects by treating them as anomalous elements of a contaminated dataset. A Variational Recurrent Neural Network (VRNN) is used to model jets as sequences of constituent four-vectors. After applying a pre-processing method which boosts each jet to the same reference mass and energy, the VRNN provides each jet an Anomaly Score that distinguishes between the structure of signal and background jets. The model is trained in an entirely unsupervised setting and without high level variables, making the score more robus…
We present a novel approach to construct a color tagger, i.e. an observable that is able to discriminate the decay of a color-singlet into two jets from a two-jet background in a different color configuration. We do this by explicitly taking the ratio of the corresponding leading-order matrix elements in the soft limit, thus obtaining an observable that is provably optimal within our approximation. We call this observable the "jet color ring" and we compare its performance to other color-sensitive observables such as jet pull and dipolarity. We also assess the performance of the jet color ring…
We investigate the performance of a jet identification algorithm based on interaction networks (JEDI-net) to identify all-hadronic decays of high-momentum heavy particles produced at the LHC and distinguish them from ordinary jets originating from the hadronization of quarks and gluons. The jet dynamics are described as a set of one-to-one interactions between the jet constituents. Based on a representation learned from these interactions, the jet is associated to one of the considered categories. Unlike other architectures, the JEDI-net models achieve their performance without special handlin…
Discriminating between quark- and gluon-initiated jets has long been a central focus of jet substructure, leading to the introduction of numerous observables and calculations to high perturbative accuracy. At the same time, there have been many attempts to fully exploit the jet radiation pattern using tools from statistics and machine learning. We propose a new approach that combines a deep analytic understanding of jet substructure with the optimality promised by machine learning and statistics. After specifying an approximation to the full emission phase space, we show how to construct the o…
In this paper we introduce a new approach to identify a bottom quark-antiquark pair inside a single jet with high transverse momentum by using the jet substructure in the center-of-mass frame of the jet. We demonstrate that the method can be used to discriminate the boosted heavy particles decaying to a $b\bar{b}$ final state from QCD jets. Applications to searches for the standard model Higgs boson ($H$) decaying to $b\bar{b}$ when produced in association with a weak vector boson are also discussed.
We show how generalized energy correlation functions can be used as a powerful probe of jet substructure. These correlation functions are based on the energies and pair-wise angles of particles within a jet, with (N+1)-point correlators sensitive to N-prong substructure. Unlike many previous jet substructure methods, these correlation functions do not require the explicit identification of subjet regions. In addition, the correlation functions are better probes of certain soft and collinear features that are masked by other methods. We present three Monte Carlo case studies to illustrate the u…
In this paper we study the identification of the b quark inside a boosted hadronically decaying top quark in the center-of-mass frame of the jet. We demonstrate that the method can be used to greatly reduce the QCD jet background even in a very high pileup condition. The method has a much smaller fake rate for QCD jets compared to typical b quark identification algorithms in jets at the same signal efficiency. When combining the b quark identification in the center-of-mass frame of the jet with jet substructure information, we can improve the rejection rate of QCD jet background by almost an o…
We study the issue of separating hadronic jets that contain bottom quarks ($b$-jets) from jets featuring light partons only. We develop a novel approach to $b$-tagging that exploits the application of QCD-inspired jet substructure observables such as one-dimensional jet angularities and the two-dimensional primary Lund plane. We demonstrate that these observables can be used as inputs to modern machine-learning algorithms to efficiently separate $b$-jets from light ones. In order to test our tagging procedure, we consider simulated events where a $Z$ boson is produced is association with jets …
Jet flavour identification algorithms are of paramount importance to maximise the physics potential of future collider experiments. This work describes a novel set of tools allowing for a realistic simulation and reconstruction of particle level observables that are necessary ingredients to jet flavour identification. An algorithm for reconstructing the track parameters and covariance matrix of charged particles for an arbitrary tracking sub-detector geometries has been developed. Additional modules allowing for particle identification using time-of-flight and ionizing energy loss information …
A method is proposed for distinguishing highly boosted hadronically decaying W's (W-jets) from QCD-jets using jet substructure. Previous methods, such as the filtering/mass-drop method, can give a factor of ~2 improvement in S/sqrt(B) for jet pT > 200 GeV. In contrast, a multivariate approach including new discriminants such as R-cores, which characterize the shape of the W-jet, subjet planar flow, and grooming-sensitivities is shown to provide a much larger factor of ~5 improvement in S/sqrt(B). For longitudinally polarized W's, such as those coming from many new physics models, the discrimin…
This Letter presents a study of the reconstruction and identification of $H\to WW^*$ with high transverse momentum, where both $W^{(*)}$ bosons decay hadronically. We show that the boosted $H\to WW^*$ can be effectively reconstructed as a single jet and identified using jet substructures in the center-of-mass frame of the jet. Such a reconstruction and identification approach can discriminate the boosted $H\to WW^*$ in the full hadronic final state from QCD jets. This result will significantly improve experimental sensitivities of searches for potential new physics phenomena beyond the standar…

In this paper we study the identification of boosted hadronically decaying top quarks using jet substructure in the center-of-mass frame of the jet. We demonstrate that the method can greatly reduce the QCD jet background while maintaining high identification efficiency of the boosted top quark even in a very high pileup condition. Applications to searches for heavy resonances that decay to a $t\bar{t}$ final state are also discussed.
We investigate full off-shell effects in $t\bar{t}b\bar{b}$ production in the dilepton channel at the LHC with the center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV. Specifically, we compute NLO QCD corrections to the $pp \to e^+ ν_e μ^- \barν_μb \bar{b} b \bar{b} + X$ process and provide a prescription for $b$-jet identification to distinguish prompt $b$ jets from $b$ jets originating from the decay of the top quarks. As an important irreducible background to $pp \to t\bar{t}H (H\to b\bar{b})$, $t\bar{t}$ production in association with two prompt $b$ jets is a primary source of uncertainty in the mea…
We develop an algorithm based on an interaction network to identify high-transverse-momentum Higgs bosons decaying to bottom quark-antiquark pairs and distinguish them from ordinary jets that reflect the configurations of quarks and gluons at short distances. The algorithm's inputs are features of the reconstructed charged particles in a jet and the secondary vertices associated with them. Describing the jet shower as a combination of particle-to-particle and particle-to-vertex interactions, the model is trained to learn a jet representation on which the classification problem is optimized. Th…
We propose a new method for pileup mitigation by implementing "pileup per particle identification" (PUPPI). For each particle we first define a local shape $α$ which probes the collinear versus soft diffuse structure in the neighborhood of the particle. The former is indicative of particles originating from the hard scatter and the latter of particles originating from pileup interactions. The distribution of $α$ for charged pileup, assumed as a proxy for all pileup, is used on an event-by-event basis to calculate a weight for each particle. The weights describe the degree to which particles ar…
N-subjettiness is a jet shape designed to identify boosted hadronic objects such as top quarks. Given N subjet axes within a jet, N-subjettiness sums the angular distances of jet constituents to their nearest subjet axis. Here, we generalize and improve on N-subjettiness by minimizing over all possible subjet directions, using a new variant of the k-means clustering algorithm. On boosted top benchmark samples from the BOOST2010 workshop, we demonstrate that a simple cut on the 3-subjettiness to 2-subjettiness ratio yields 20% (50%) tagging efficiency for a 0.23% (4.1%) fake rate, making N-subj…
We present post-LHC updates of estimates of the total photo-production cross section in a mini-jet model with infrared soft gluon resummation, and apply the model to study Cosmic Ray shower development, comparing the results with those obtained from other existing models.
For the p-air production cross-section, we use a Glauber formalism which inputs the pp inelastic cross-section from a mini-jet model embedded in a single-channel eikonal expression, which provides the needed contribution of uncorrelated processes. It is then shown that current LO parton density functions for the pp mini-jet cross-sections, with a rise tempered by collinearity induced by soft gluon re-summation, are well suited to reproduce recent cosmic ray results. By comparing results for GRV, MRST72 and MSTW parametrizations, we estimate the uncertainty related to the low-x behavior of thes…
We present the predictions of a model for proton-proton total cross-section at LHC. It takes into account both hard partonic processes and soft gluon emission effects to describe the proper high energy behavior and to respect the Froissart bound.
Pions constitute nearly $70\%$ of final state particles in ultra high energy collisions. They act as a probe to understand the statistical properties of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) matter i.e. Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP) created in such relativistic heavy ion collisions (HIC). Apart from this, direct photons are the most versatile tools to study relativistic HIC. They are produced, by various mechanisms, during the entire space-time history of the strongly interacting system. Direct photons provide measure of jet-quenching when compared with other quark or gluon jets. The $π^{0}$ decay into two …
The identification of hadronically decaying heavy states, such as vector bosons, the Higgs, or the top quark, produced with large transverse boosts has been and will continue to be a central focus of the jet physics program at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). At a future hadron collider working at an order-of-magnitude larger energy than the LHC, these heavy states would be easily produced with transverse boosts of several TeV. At these energies, their decay products will be separated by angular scales comparable to individual calorimeter cells, making the current jet substructure identificati…

We complete the physical picture for the evolution of a high-energy jet propagating through a weakly-coupled quark-gluon plasma by investigating the thermalization of the soft components of the jet. We argue that the following scenario should hold: the leading particle emits a significant number of mini-jets which promptly evolve via quasi-democratic branchings and thus degrade into a myriad of soft gluons, with energies of the order of the medium temperature T. Via elastic collisions with the medium constituents, these soft gluons relax to local thermal equilibrium with the plasma over a time…
We present the complete physical picture for the evolution of a high-energy jet propagating through a weakly-coupled quark-gluon plasma (QGP) by analytical and numerical investigation of thermalization of the soft components of the jet. Our results support the following physical picture: the leading particle emits a significant number of mini-jets which promptly evolve via multiple branching and thus degrade into a myriad of soft gluons, with energies of the order of the medium temperature $T$. Via elastic collisions with the medium constituents, these soft gluons relax to local thermal equili…
