Let $(M,ω)$ be a symplectic manifold and $U\subseteq M$ an open subset. We study the natural inclusion of the compactly supported Hamiltonian group of $U$ in the compactly supported Hamiltonian group of $M$. The main result is an upper bound for this map in terms of the Hofer norms for $U$ and $M$. Applications are upper bounds on the asymptotic Hofer-Lipschitz constant and the relative Hofer diameter of $U$. The first bound is often sharp and the second one is often sharp up to a factor of 2.

Quasimorphisms on surfaces and continuity in the Hofer norm

There is a number of known constructions of quasimorphisms on Hamiltonian groups. We show that on surfaces many of these quasimorphisms are not compatible with the Hofer norm in a sense they are not continuous and not Lipschitz. The only exception known to the author is the Calabi quasimorphism on a sphere and the induced quasimorphisms on genus-zero surfaces.

On Hofer Energy of J-holomorphic Curves for Asymptotically Cylindrical J

In this paper, we provide a bound for the generalized Hofer energy of punctured $J$-holomorphic curves in almost complex manifolds with asymptotically cylindrical ends. Volume preserving bi-Lipschitz homeomorphisms on the Heisenberg group

Elementary sub-Riemannian geometry on the Heisenberg group H(n) provides a compact picture of symplectic geometry. Any Hamiltonian diffeomorphism on $R^{2n}$ lifts to a volume preserving bi-Lipschitz homeomorphisms of H(n), with the use of its generating function. Any curve of a flow of such homeomorphisms deviates from horizontality by the Hamiltonian of the flow. From the metric point of view this means that any such curve has Hausdorff dimension 2 and the $\mathcal{H}^{2}$ (area) density equal to the Hamiltonian. The non-degeneracy of the Hofer distance is a direct consequence of this fact.

Descent and C^0-rigidity of spectral invariants on monotone symplectic manifolds

We obtain estimates showing that on monotone symplectic manifolds (asymptotic) spectral invariants of Hamiltonians which vanish on a non-empty open set, U, descend to Ham_c(M\setminus U) from its universal cover. Furthermore, we show these invariants and are continuous with respect to the C^0-topology on Ham_c(M\setminus U). We apply these results to Hofer geometry and establish unboundedness of the Hofer diameter of $Ham_c(M\setminus U)$ for stably displaceable $U$. We also answer a question of F. Le Roux about $C^0$-continuity properties of the Hofer metric.

On the asymptotic geometry of area-preserving maps

We study the asymptotic behaviour of 1-parameter subgroups with respect to Hofer's metric when the underlying symplectic manifold is an open surface of infinite area. We prove that, depending on the topology of the level sets of the Hamiltonian H, the distance either is bounded or behaves asymptotically linear. Embeddings of free groups into asymptotic cones of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms

Given a symplectic surface $(Σ, ω)$ of genus $g \ge 4$, we show that the free group with two generators embeds into every asymptotic cone of $(\mathrm{Ham}(Σ, ω), d_\mathrm{H})$, where $d_\mathrm{H}$ is the Hofer metric. The result stabilizes to products with symplectically aspherical manifolds.

Action minimizing properties and distances on the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms

In this article we prove that for a smooth fiberwise convex Hamiltonian, the asymptotic Hofer distance from the identity gives a strict upper bound to the value at 0 of Mather's $β$ function, thus providing a negative answer to a question asked by K. Siburg in \cite{Siburg1998}. However, we show that equality holds if one considers the asymptotic distance defined in \cite{Viterbo1992}.
