We review recent results on symmetries of asymptotically flat spacetimes at null infinity. In higher dimensions, the symmetry algebra realizes the Poincaré algebra. In three and four dimensions, besides the infinitesimal supertranslations that have been known since the sixties, the algebras are evenly balanced because there are also infinitesimal superrotations. We provide the classification of central extensions of the bms3 and bms4 algebras. Applications and consequences as well as directions for future work are briefly indicated.

The Dynamics of Supertranslations and Superrotations in 2+1 Dimensions

Supertranslations, and at least in 2+1 dimensions superrotations, are asymptotic symmetries of the metric in asymptotically flat spacetimes. They are not, however, symmetries of the boundary term of the Einstein-Hilbert action, which therefore induces an action for the Goldstone-like fields that parametrize these symmetries. I show that in 2+1 dimensions, this action is closely related to a chiral Liouville action, as well as the "Schwarzian" action that appears in two-dimensional near-AdS physics.

Supertranslations and Superrotations at the Black Hole Horizon

We show that the asymptotic symmetries close to nonextremal black hole horizons are generated by an extension of supertranslations. This group is generated by a semidirect sum of Virasoro and Abelian currents. The charges associated with the asymptotic Killing symmetries satisfy the same algebra. When considering the special case of a stationary black hole, the zero mode charges correspond to the angular momentum and the entropy at the horizon.

On higher-spin supertranslations and superrotations

We study the large gauge transformations of massless higher-spin fields in four-dimensional Minkowski space. Upon imposing suitable fall-off conditions, providing higher-spin counterparts of the Bondi gauge, we observe the existence of an infinite-dimensional asymptotic symmetry algebra. The corresponding Ward identities can be held responsible for Weinberg's factorization theorem for amplitudes involving soft particles of spin greater than two.

Infinite towers of supertranslation and superrotation memories

A framework that structures the gravitational memory effects and which is consistent with gravitational electric-magnetic duality is presented. A correspondence is described between memory observables, particular subleading residual gauge transformations, associated overleading gauge transformations and their canonical surface charges. Gravitational Memory Charges of Supertranslation and Superrotation on Rindler Horizons

In a Rindler-type coordinate system spanned in a region outside of a black hole horizon, we have nonvanishing classical holographic charges as soft hairs on the horizon for stationary black holes. Taking a large black hole mass limit, the spacetimes with the charges are described by asymptotic Rindler metrics. Extended BMS Algebra of Celestial CFT

We elaborate on the proposal of flat holography in which four-dimensional physics is encoded in two-dimensional celestial conformal field theory (CCFT). The symmetry underlying CCFT is the extended BMS symmetry of (asymptotically) flat spacetime. We use soft and collinear theorems of Einstein-Yang-Mills theory to derive the OPEs of BMS field operators generating superrotations and supertranslations. BMS charge algebra

The surface charges associated with the symmetries of asymptotically flat four dimensional spacetimes at null infinity are constructed. They realize the symmetry algebra in general only up to a field-dependent central extension that satisfies a suitably generalized cocycle condition. On asymptotic symmetries in higher dimensions for any spin

We investigate asymptotic symmetries in flat backgrounds of dimension higher than or equal to four. For spin two we provide the counterpart of the extended BMS transformations found by Campiglia and Laddha in four-dimensional Minkowski space. Superboost transitions, refraction memory and super-Lorentz charge algebra

We derive a closed-form expression of the orbit of Minkowski spacetime under arbitrary Diff$(S^2)$ super-Lorentz transformations and supertranslations. On the Membrane Paradigm and Spontaneous Breaking of Horizon BMS Symmetries

We consider a BMS-type symmetry action on isolated horizons in asymptotically flat spacetimes. From the viewpoint of the non-relativistic field theory on a horizon membrane, supertranslations shift the field theory spatial momentum. The latter is related by a Ward identity to the particle number symmetry current and is spontaneously broken. Asymptotic symmetries in spatially flat FRW

We perform an off-shell treatment of asymptotically decelerating spatially flat FRW spacetimes at future null infinity. We obtain supertranslation and superrotation-like asymptotic diffeomorphisms which are consistent with the global symmetries of FRW and we compute how the asymptotic data is transformed under them. Further, we study in detail the effect of these diffeomorphisms on some simple backgrounds including unperturbed FRW and Sultana-Dyer black hole. In particular, we investigate how these transformations act on several cosmologically perturbed backgrounds.

Asymptotically flat spacetimes with BMS$_3$ symmetry

We construct the phase space of 3-dimensional asymptotically flat spacetimes that forms the bulk metric representation of the BMS group consisting of both supertranslations and superrotations. The asymptotic symmetry group is a unique copy of the BMS group at both null infinities and spatial infinity. The BMS phase space obeys a notion of holographic causality and can be parametrized by boundary null fields. This automatically leads to the antipodal identification of bulk fields between past and future null infinity in the absence of a global conical defect.

Extended Symmetries at Black Hole Horizons in Generic Dimensions

Recently it has been shown that there is asymptotic BMS-like symmetry associated with the near-horizon geometry of black holes in three and four dimensions. In this paper, we show that the presence of such BMS-like symmetry is a ubiquitous feature for black holes in generic dimensions. For black holes in $D$ dimensions, the symmetry contains 2 supertranslations and $D-2$ generalized superrotations. Quantum BMS transformations in conformally flat space-times and holography

We define and study asymptotic Killing and conformal Killing vectors in $d$-dimensional Minkowski, (A)dS, $\mathbb{R}\times S^{d-1}$ and ${\rm AdS}_2\times S^{d-2}$. We construct the associated quantum charges for an arbitrary CFT and show they satisfy a closed algebra that includes the BMS as a sub-algebra (i.e. supertranslations and superrotations) plus a novel transformation we call `superdilations'. Local supersymmetry and the square roots of Bondi-Metzner-Sachs supertranslations

Super-BMS$_4$ algebras -- also called BMS$_4$ superalgebras -- are graded extensions of the BMS$_4$ algebra. Charges for Hypertranslations and Hyperrotations

Hypertranslations and hyperrotations are asymptotic symmetries of flat space, on top of the familiar supertranslations and superrotations. Asymptotic symmetries and subleading soft graviton theorem

Motivated by the equivalence between soft graviton theorem and Ward identities for the supertranslation symmetries belonging to the BMS group, we propose a new extension (different from the so-called extended BMS) of the BMS group which is a semi-direct product of supertranslations and Diff(S^2). We propose a definition for the canonical generators associated to the smooth diffeomorphisms and show that the resulting Ward identities are equivalent to the subleading soft graviton theorem of Cachazo and Strominger.
