The critical exponents for the Anderson transition in three and four effective dimensions are discussed on the basis of previous data obtained for the frequency modulated kicked rotator. Without appeal to a scaling function they are shown to be in a satisfactory agreement with the theoretical relation known for them.
We study numerically the frequency modulated kicked nonlinear rotator with effective dimension $d=1,2,3,4$. We follow the time evolution of the model up to $10^9$ kicks and determine the exponent $α$ of subdiffusive spreading which changes from $0.35$ to $0.5$ when the dimension changes from $d=1$ to $4$. All results are obtained in a regime of relatively strong Anderson localization well below the Anderson transition point existing for $d=3,4$. We explain that this variation of the exponent is different from the usual $d-$dimensional Anderson models with local nonlinearity where $α$ drops wit…
We rigorously analyse the correspondence between the one-dimensional standard Anderson model and a related classical system, the `kicked oscillator' with noisy frequency. We show that the Anderson localization corresponds to a parametric instability of the oscillator, with the localization length determined by an increment of the exponential growth of the energy. Analytical expression for a weak disorder is obtained, which is valid both inside the energy band and at the band edge.
We show that quantum wavepackets exhibit a sharp macroscopic peak as they spread in the vicinity of the critical point of the Anderson transition. The peak gives a direct access to the mutifractal properties of the wavefunctions and specifically to the multifractal dimension $d\_2$. Our analysis is based on an experimentally realizable setup, the quantum kicked rotor with quasi-periodic temporal driving, an effectively 3-dimensional disordered system recently exploited to explore the physics of the Anderson transition with cold atoms.
Dimension 2 is expected to be the lower critical dimension for Anderson localization in a time reversal-invariant disordered quantum system. Using an atomic quasiperiodic kicked rotor -- equivalent to a two-dimensional Anderson-like model -- we experimentally study Anderson localization in dimension 2 and we observe localized wavefunction dynamics. We also show that the localization length depends exponentially on the disorder strength and anisotropy and is in quantitative agreement with the predictions of the self-consistent theory for the 2D Anderson localization.
We report a numerical analysis of the Anderson transition in a quantum-chaotic system, the quasiperiodic kicked rotor with three incommensurate frequencies. It is shown that this dynamical system exhibits the same critical phenomena as the truly random 3D-Anderson model. By taking proper account of systematic corrections to one-parameter scaling, the universality of the critical exponent is demonstrated. Our result $ν= 1.59 \pm 0.01$ is in perfect agreement with the value found for the Anderson model.
We study the dynamics of Bogoliubov excitations of a Bose-Einstein condensate in the quasiperiodic kicked rotor. In the weakly interacting regime, the condensate is stable and both the condensate and the excitations undergo a phase transition from a quasilocalized to a diffusive regime. The corresponding critical exponents are identical for the condensate and the excitations, and compare very well with the value $ν\approx1.6$ for non-interacting particles.
We investigate Anderson localization in a three dimensional (3d) kicked rotor. By a finite size scaling analysis we have identified a mobility edge for a certain value of the kicking strength $k = k_c$. For $k > k_c$ dynamical localization does not occur, all eigenstates are delocalized and the spectral correlations are well described by Wigner-Dyson statistics. This can be understood by mapping the kicked rotor problem onto a 3d Anderson model (AM) where a band of metallic states exists for sufficiently weak disorder. Around the critical region $k \approx k_c$ we have carried out a detailed s…
The quantum kicked rotor (QKR) driven by $d$ incommensurate frequencies realizes the universality class of $d$-dimensional disordered metals. For $d>3$, the system exhibits an Anderson metal-insulator transition which has been observed within the framework of an atom optics realization. However, the absence of genuine randomness in the QKR reflects in critical phenomena beyond those of the Anderson universality class. Specifically, the system shows strong sensitivity to the algebraic properties of its effective Planck constant $\tilde h \equiv 4π/q$. For integer $q$, the system may be in a glo…
The quantum motion of $N$ coupled kicked rotors is mapped to an interacting $N$-particle Anderson-Aubry-Andr$é$ tight-binding problem supporting many-body localised (MBL) phases. Interactions in configuration space are known to be insufficient for destroying Anderson localisation in a system in the MBL phase. The mapping we establish here predicts that a similar effect takes place in momentum space and determines the quantum dynamics of the coupled kicked rotors. Due to the boundedness of the Floquet quasi-energy spectrum there exists limitations on the interacting lattice models that can be m…
We investigate the possibility of an Anderson type transition in the quantum kicked rotor with a smooth potential due to dynamical localization of the wavefunctions. Our results show the typical characteristics of a critical behavior i.e multifractal eigenfunctions and a scale-invariant level-statistics at a critical kicking strength which classically corresponds to a mixed regime. This indicates the existence of a localization to delocalization transition in the quantum kicked rotor. Our study also reveals the possibility of other type of transitions in the quantum kicked rotor, with a kickin…
Using a cold atomic gas exposed to laser pulses -- a realization of the chaotic quasiperiodic kicked rotor with three incommensurate frequencies -- we study experimentally and theoretically the Anderson metal-insulator transition in three dimensions. Sensitive measurements of the atomic wavefunction and the use of finite-size scaling techniques make it possible to unambiguously demonstrate the existence of a quantum phase transition and to measure its critical exponents. By taking proper account of systematic corrections to one-parameter scaling, we show the universality of the critical expone…
Conventionally the mobility edge (ME) separating extended states from localized ones is a central concept in understanding Anderson localization transition. The critical state, being delocalized and non-ergodic, is a third type of fundamental state that is different from both the extended and localized states. Here we study the localization phenomena in a one dimensional periodically kicked quasiperiodic optical Raman lattice by using fractal dimensions. We show a rich phase diagram including the pure extended, critical and localized phases in the high frequency regime, the MEs separating the …
The quantum kicked rotor is well-known for displaying dynamical (Anderson) localization. It has recently been shown that a periodically kicked Tonks gas will always localize and converge to a finite energy steady-state. This steady-state has been described as being effectively thermal with an effective temperature that depends on the parameters of the kick. Here we study a generalization to a quasi-periodic driving with three frequencies which, without interactions, has a metal-insulator Anderson transition. We show that a quasi-periodically kicked Tonks gas goes through a dynamical many-body …
Using a three-frequency one-dimensional kicked rotor experimentally realized with a cold atomic gas, we study the transport properties at the critical point of the metal-insulator Anderson transition. We accurately measure the time-evolution of an initially localized wavepacket and show that it displays at the critical point a scaling invariance characteristic of this second-order phase transition. The shape of the momentum distribution at the critical point is found to be in excellent agreement with the analytical form deduced from self-consistent theory of localization.
We report a careful finite size scaling study of the metal insulator transition in Anderson's model of localisation. We focus on the estimation of the critical exponent $ν$ that describes the divergence of the localisation length. We verify the universality of this critical exponent for three different distributions of the random potential: box, normal and Cauchy. Our results for the critical exponent are consistent with the measured values obtained in experiments on the dynamical localisation transition in the quantum kicked rotor realised in a cold atomic gas.
We investigate the effect of classical singularities in the quantum properties of non-random Hamiltonians. We present explicit results for the case of a kicked rotator with a non-analytical potential though extensions to higher dimensionality or conservative systems are straightforward. It is shown that classical singularities produce anomalous diffusion in the classical phase space. Quantum mechanically, the eigenstates of the evolution operator are power-law localized with an exponent universally given by the type of classical singularity. For logarithmic singularities, the classical motion …
Systems with the power-law quasiparticle dispersion $ε_{\bf k}\propto k^α$ exhibit non-Anderson disorder-driven transitions in dimensions $d>2α$, as exemplified by Weyl semimetals, 1D and 2D arrays of ultracold ions with long-range interactions, quantum kicked rotors and semiconductor models in high dimensions. We study the wavefunction structure in such systems and demonstrate that at these transitions they exhibit fractal behaviour with an infinite set of multifractal exponents. The multifractality persists even when the wavefunction localisation is forbidden by symmetry or topology and occu…
Following the paper exploring the Anderson localization of monochromatically perturbed kicked quantum maps [Phys.Rev. E{\bf 97},012210], the delocalization-localization transition phenomena in polychromatically perturbed quantum maps (QM) is investigated focusing particularly on the dependency of critical phenomena upon the number $M$ of the harmonic perturbations, where $M+1=d$ corresponds to the spatial dimension of the ordinary disordered lattice. The standard map and the Anderson map are treated and compared. As the basis of analysis, we apply the self-consistent theory (SCT) of the locali…
It is commonly believed that a non-interacting disordered electronic system can undergo only the Anderson metal-insulator transition. It has been suggested, however, that a broad class of systems can display disorder-driven transitions distinct from Anderson localisation that have manifestations in the disorder-averaged density of states, conductivity and other observables. Such transitions have received particular attention in the context of recently discovered 3D Weyl and Dirac materials but have also been predicted in cold-atom systems with long-range interactions, quantum kicked rotors and…
