We present a theoretical analysis of the nonlinear response of a metamaterial consisting of an array of split ring resonators coupled to a two level atomic system (2LS) without inversion. We calculated the total complex susceptibility and the linear, third and fifth-order nonlinear solution of the Maxwell Bloch equations that describe the coupled system. We analyzed the impact of the nonlinear effects on the dynamics of an active metamaterial/2LS compound in dependence of the magnitude of the external electric field when the 2LS is pumped by an external pump source and population inversion is achieved. We observed that nonlinear damping in the active metamaterial/2LS compound significantly reduces the effect of spiking. Finally, we investigated the conditions under which the system can exhibit the phenomenon of optical bistability. We observed that optical bistability can only be obtained when the atomic volume density of the 2LS attains unphysically high values and thus is not expected in the system under investigation.
We propose to achieve a strong bistable response of a thin layer of a saturable absorption medium by involving a planar metamaterial specially designed to bear a high-Q trapped-mode resonance in the infrared region.
We report on a bistable light transmission through a planar metamaterial composed of a metal pattern of weakly asymmetric elements placed on a nonlinear substrate. Such structure bears the Fano-like sharp resonance response of a trapped-mode excitation. The feedback required for bistability is provided by the coupling between the strong antiphased trapped-mode-resonance currents excited on the metal elements and the intensity of inner field in the nonlinear substrate.
Nonlinear processes are at the core of many optical technologies including lasers, information processing, sensing, and security, and require optimised materials suitable for nanoscale integration. Here we demonstrate the emergence of a strong bulk second-order nonlinear response in a composite plasmonic nanorod material comprised of centrosymmetric materials. The metamaterial provides equally strong generation of the p-polarized second harmonic light in response to both s- and p-polarized excitation. We develop an effective-medium description of the underlying physics, compare its predictions…
Within a decade of fruitful developments, metamaterials became a prominent area of research, bridging theoretical and applied electrodynamics, electrical engineering and material science. Being man-made structures, metamaterials offer a particularly useful playground to develop novel interdisciplinary concepts. Here we demonstrate a novel principle in metamaterial assembly which integrates electromagnetic, mechanical, and thermal responses within their elements. Through these mechanisms, the conformation of the meta-molecules changes, providing a dual mechanism for nonlinearity and offering no…
Optical devices with metastable states controlled with light (optical flip-flops) are needed in data storage, signal processing and displays. Although non-volatile optical memory relying on structural phase transitions in chalcogenide glasses has been widely used for optical data storage, beyond that, weak optical nonlinearities have hindered the development of low-power bistable devices. Here we report on a new type of volatile optical bistability in a resonant hybrid nano-optomechanical device, comprising of a pair of anchored nanowires decorated with plasmonic metamolecules. The nonlinearit…
We demonstrate a nonlinear metamaterial that can be switched between low and high transmission by controlling the power level of the incident beam. The origin of this nonlinear response is the superconducting Nb thin film employed in the metamaterial structure. We show that with moderate RF power of about 22 dBm it is possible to quench the superconducting state as a result of extremely strong current densities at the corners of the metamaterial's split-ring resonators. We measure a transmission contrast of 10 dB and a change in group delay of 70 ns between the low and high power states.
We find the analytical expression for the threshold intensity necessary to launch ultra-slow light pulses in a metamaterial with simultaneous cubic electric and magnetic nonlinearity. The role played respectively by the permittivity, the permeability, the electric cubic nonlinearity, the magnetic cubic nonlinearity and the pulse duration is clearly identified and discussed.
We report on the linear and nonlinear optical response of metamaterials evoked by first and second order multipoles. The analytical ground on which our approach bases permits for new insights into the functionality of metamaterials. For the sake of clarity we focus here on a key geometry, namely the split-ring resonator, although the introduced formalism can be applied to arbitrary structures. We derive the equations that describe linear and nonlinear light propagation where special emphasis is put on second harmonic generation. This contribution basically aims at stretching versatile and exis…
Metamaterials, i.e., artificially structured ("synthetic") media comprising weakly coupled discrete elements, exhibit extraordinary properties and they hold a great promise for novel applications including super-resolution imaging, cloaking, hyperlensing, and optical transformation. Nonlinearity adds a new degree of freedom for metamaterial design that allows for tuneability and multistability, properties that may offer altogether new functionalities and electromagnetic characteristics. The combination of discreteness and nonlinearity may lead to intrinsic localization of the type of discrete …
From the demonstration of saturable absorption by Vavilow and Levshin in 1926, and with invention of the laser, unavailability of strongly nonlinear materials was a key obstacle for developing optical signal processing, in particular in transparent telecommunication networks. Today, most advanced photonic switching materials exploit gain dynamics and near-band and excitonic effects in semiconductors, nonlinearities in organic media with weakly-localized electrons and nonlinearities enhanced by hybridization with metamaterials. Here we report on a new type of artificial nonlinearity that is nan…
Metamaterials, artificial media structured on the subwavelength scale offer a rich paradigm for developing unique photonic functionalities ranging from negative index of refraction and directionally asymmetric transmission to slowing light. Here we demonstrate that a combination of carbon nanotubes with a photonic metamaterial offers a new paradigm for the development of nonlinear media with exceptionally strong ultrafast nonlinear response invaluable in photonic applications. It is underpinned by strong coupling between weakly radiating Fano-type resonant plasmonic modes and the excitonic res…
A theoretical study of wave propagation in 1D metamaterial is presented. A system of nonlinear evolution equation for electromagnetic waves with both polarizations account is derived by means of projection operators method for general nonlinearity and dispersion. The system describes interaction of opposite directed waves with a given polarization. The particular case of Kerr nonlinearity and Drude dispersion is considered. In such approximation it results in the correspondent systems of nonlinear equations that generalizes the Schäfer-Wayne one. Particular solutions in case of slow-varying en…
We present an analytical model describing complex dynamics of a hybrid nonlinear system consisting of interacting carbon nanotubes (CNT) and a plasmonic metamaterial. Our model is based on the set of coupled equations, which incorporates well-established density matrix formalism appropriate for quantum systems (CNT are described as a two level system) and harmonic-oscillator approach ideal for modelling sub-wavelength plasmonic and optical resonators. We show that the saturation nonlinearity of CNT increases multifold in the resonantly enhanced near field of a metamaterial. In the framework of…
All-optical switching based on optical nonlinearity must undergo complex processes of light-mater interaction in atom and electron scale, so a relative high power and long response time is required, that construct main bottlenecks in all-optical technology. In this paper, we propose a new mechanism for building all-optical switching based on a change resonance modes of meta-atoms in metamaterials, not involved optical nonlinearity of materials. A metamaterial composed of cubic dielectric meta-atoms periodically embedded in a background matrix is designed and constructed. All-optical switch fun…
We propose and verify experimentally a new concept for achieving strong nonlinear coupling between the electromagnetic and elastic properties in metamaterials. This coupling is provided through a novel degree of freedom in metamaterial design: internal rotation within structural elements. Our meta-atoms have high sensitivity to electromagnetic wave power, and the elastic and electromagnetic properties can be independently designed to optimise the response. We demonstrate a rich range of nonlinear phenomena including self-tuning and bistability, and provide a comprehensive experimental demonstr…
We study the main nonlinear solutions of plasmonic slot waveguides made from an anisotropic metamaterial core with a positive Kerr-type nonlinearity surrounded by two semi-infinite metal regions. First, we demonstrate that for a highly anisotropic diagonal elliptical core, the bifurcation threshold of the asymmetric mode is reduced from GW/m threshold for the isotropic case to 50 MW/m one indicating a strong enhancement of the spatial nonlinear effects, and that the slope of the dispersion curve of the asymmetric mode stays positive, at least near the bifurcation, suggesting a stable mode. Sec…
We propose a new type of bistable device for silicon photonics, using the self-electro-optic effect within an optical cavity. Since the bistability does not depend on the intrinsic optical nonlinearity of the material, but is instead engineered by means of an optoelectronic feedback, it appears at low optical powers. This bistable device satisfies all the basic criteria required in an optical switch to build a scalable digital optical computing system.
We consider light scattering by dielectric gratings supporting optical bound states in the continuum. Due to the presence of instantaneous Kerr nonlinearity the critical field enhancement in the spectral vicinity of the bound state triggers the effect of optical bistability. The onset of bistability is explained theoretically in the framework of the temporal coupled mode theory. As the central result we cast the problem into the form of a singly field-driven nonlinear oscillator. The theoretical results are verified in comparison against full-wave numerical simulations.
The central theme of this article is the analysis of the usefulness of introducing four-wave mixing or modulation of Kerr nonlinearity in a nonuniform grating structure with gain and loss. To do so, we propose an inhomogeneous system in which the nonlinearity of the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric grating is modulated. It is proven that the proposed scheme can be fruitful only if the nonlinearity and its associated modulation terms are assumed to be self-defocusing ones. In order to cut down the intensity required for the steering, the sign of chirping is taken to be negative and the wavelength of op…
We theoretically analyze the optical and optomechanical nonlinearity present in a hybrid system consisting of a quantum dot(QD) coupled to an optomechanical cavity in the presence of a nonlinear Kerr medium, and show that this hybrid system can be used as an all optical switch. A high degree of control and tunability via the QD-cavity coupling strength, the Kerr and the optomechanical nonlinearity over the bistable behavior shown by the mean intracavity optical field and the power transmission of the weak probe field can be achieved. The results obtained in this investigation has the potential …
We characterize the full family of soliton solutions sitting over a background plane wave and ruled by the cubic-quintic nonlinear Schroedinger equation in the regime where a quintic focusing term represents a saturation of the cubic defocusing nonlinearity. We discuss existence and properties of solitons in terms of catastrophe theory and fully characterize bistability and instabilities of the dark-antidark pairs, revealing new mechanisms of decay of antidark solitons.
We study wave transmission through one-dimensional random nonlinear structures and predict a novel effect resulting from an interplay of nonlinearity and disorder. We reveal that, while weak nonlinearity does not change the typical exponentially small transmission in the regime of the Anderson localization, it affects dramatically the disorder-induced localized states excited inside the medium leading to {\em bistable} and {\em nonreciprocal} resonant transmission. Our numerical modelling shows an excellent agreement with theoretical predictions based on the concept of a high-Q resonator assoc…
We discuss the similarity between the nature of resonant oscillations in two nonlinear systems, namely, a chain of coupled Duffing oscillators and a bilayer fish-scale metamaterial. In such systems two different resonant states arise which differ in their spectral lines. The spectral line of the first resonant state has a Lorentzian form, while the second one has a Fano form. This difference leads to a specific nonlinear response of the systems which manifests itself in appearance of closed loops in spectral lines and bending and overlapping of resonant curves. Conditions of achieving bistabil…
We introduce a one dimensional parity-time (PT)-symmetric nonlinear magnetic metamaterial consisted of split ring dimers having both gain and loss. When nonlinearity is absent we find a transition between an exact to a broken PT-phase; in the former the system features a two band gapped spectrum with shape determined by the gain and loss coefficients as well as the inter-unit coupling. In the presence of nonlinearity we show numerically that as a result of the gain/dissipation matching a novel type of long-lived stable discrete breathers can form below the lower branch of the band with no atte…
We investigate nonlinear transmission in a layered structure consisting of a slab of positive index material (PIM) with Kerr-type nonlinearity and a sub-wavelength layer of linear negative index material (NIM) sandwiched between semi-infinite linear dielectrics. We find that a thin layer of NIM leads to significant changes in the hysteresis width when the nonlinear slab is illuminated at an angle near that of total internal reflection. Unidirectional diode-like transmission with enhanced operational range is demonstrated. These results may be useful for NIMs characterization and for designing …
In this paper, we carry out a theoretical investigation on the propagation of spatio-temporal solitons (light bullets) in the nonlinear metamaterial waveguides. Our theoretical study is based on the formulation of Lagrangian variational analysis with a suitable ansatz followed by a split-step Fourier method in confirming the outcomes former numerically. A particular emphasis is given to obtain the conditions on the system parameters for stable dynamics in negative as well as positive index regimes of metamaterial waveguides. Similar to the conventional medium, the three-dimensional (3D) light …
An optical resonator with intracavity Kerr nonlinearity can exhibit dispersive bistability suitable for all-optical switching. With nanophotonic elements it may be possible to achieve attojoule switching energies, which would be very attractive for ultra-low power operation but potentially problematic because of quantum fluctuation-induced spontaneous switching. In this manuscript I derive a quantum-optical model of two Kerr-nonlinear ring resonators connected in a coherent feedback loop, and show via numerical simulation that a properly designed `controller' cavity can significantly reduce th…
One of the most fundamental properties of isotropic negative-index metamaterials, namely opposite directionality of the Poynting vector and the wavevector, enable many novel linear and nonlinear regimes of light-matter interactions. Here, we predict distinct characteristics of azimuthal modulation instability of optical vortices with different topological charges in negative-index metamaterials with Kerr-type and saturable nonlinearity. We derive an analytical expression for the spatial modulation-instability gain for the Kerr-nonlinearity case and show that a specific condition relating the d…
We study a critically coupled system (Opt. Lett., \textbf{32}, 1483 (2007)) with a Kerr-nonlinear spacer layer. Nonlinearity is shown to inhibit null-scattering in a critically coupled system at low powers. However, a system detuned from critical coupling can exhibit near-complete suppression of scattering by means of nonlinearity-induced changes in refractive index. Our studies reveal clearly an important aspect of critical coupling as a delicate balance in both the amplitude and the phase relations, while a nonlinear resonance in dispersive bistability concerns only the phase.
Structuring optical materials on a nanometer scale can lead to artificial effective media, or metamaterials, with strongly altered optical behavior. Metamaterials can provide a wide range of linear optical properties such as negative refractive index, hyperbolic dispersion, or magnetic behavior at optical frequencies. Nonlinear optical properties, however, have only been demonstrated for patterned metallic films which suffer from high optical losses. Here we show that second-order nonlinear metamaterials can also be obtained from non-metallic centrosymmetric constituents with inherently low op…
We predict that nonlinear left-handed metamaterials can support both TE- and TM-polarized self-trapped localized beams, spatial electromagnetic solitons. Such solitons appear as single- and multi-hump beams, being either symmetric or antisymmetric, and they can exist due to the hysteresis-type magnetic nonlinearity and the effective domains of negative magnetic permeability.
We present a detailed study of electrical and optical generated free carrier on the spectral characteristics of a silicon microring modulator. The spectral distortion generated due to thermal and free carriers is presented, and the mechanism for mitigation is also presented. We observed that two-photon induced nonlinearity could be addressed by operating the modulator at suitable bias points. Furthermore, by applying small-signal drive the spectral distortion can be restored. We also present the effect of optical power and drive signal limit on the spectral characteristics. The study allows on…
To enable new nonlinear responses, metamaterials are created by organizing structural units (meta-atoms) which are typically on the scale of about a hundred nanometers. However, truly altering atomic symmetry and enabling new nonlinear responses requires control at the atomic-scale, down to a few angstroms. Here we report the discovery of 3D nonlinear optical metamaterials realized by the precise control and twist of individual 2D van der Waals interfaces. Specifically, new nonlinear crystals are achieved by adding pseudo screw symmetries to a multiple of 4-layer WS2 stacks (e.g. 4-layer, 8-la…
We investigate the modulational instability and time-domain dynamics of nonlinear magnetic metamaterials composed of coupled split-ring resonators loaded by Kerr nonlinearity. Our results indicate that the recently proposed optical switching of local optical index based on uniform-response assumption seems fragile. We conceive two alternative schemes to utilize the valuable enhanced non- linearity, one is to focus on few-body systems and directly make use of the modulational instability (e.g., an optical comparator design), the other is to consider global switching arising from global feedback…
We review progress in the development and applications of superconducting metamaterials. The review is organized in terms of several distinct advantages and unique properties brought to the metamaterials field by superconductivity. These include the low-loss nature of the meta-atoms, their compact structure, their extraordinary degree of nonlinearity and tunability, magnetic flux quantization and the Josephson effect, quantum effects in which photons interact with quantized energy levels in the meta-atom, as well as strong diamagnetism.
A purely artificial mechanism for optical nonlinearity is proposed based on a metamaterial route. The mechanism is derived from classical electromagnetic interaction in a meta-molecule consisting of a cut-wire meta-atom nested within a split-ring meta-atom. Induced by the localized magnetic field in the split-ring meta-atom, the magnetic force drives an anharmonic oscillation of free electrons in the cut-wire meta-atom, generating an intrinsically nonlinear electromagnetic response. An explicit physical process of a second-order nonlinear behavior is adequately described, which is perfectly de…
We study experimentally the dynamic tunability and self-induced nonlinearity of split-ring resonators incorporating variable capacitance diodes. We demonstrate that the eigenfrequencies of the resonators can be tuned over a wide frequency range, and significantly, we show that the self-induced nonlinear effects observed in the varactor-loaded split-ring resonator structures can appear at relatively low power levels.
Two distinct models are developed to investigate the transverse magnetic stationary solutions propagating in one-dimensional anisotropic nonlinear plasmonic structures made from a nonlinear metamaterial core of Kerr-type embedded between two semi-infinite metal claddings. The first model is semi-analytical, in which we assumed that the anisotropic nonlinearity depends only on the transverse component of the electric field and that the nonlinear refractive index modification is small compared to the linear one. This method allows us to derive analytically the field profiles and the nonlinear di…
According to Huygens' superposition principle, light beams traveling in a linear medium will pass though one another without mutual disturbance. Indeed, it is widely held that controlling light signals with light requires intense laser fields to facilitate beam interactions in nonlinear media, where the superposition principle can be broken. We demonstrate here that two coherent beams of light of arbitrarily low intensity can interact on a metamaterial layer of nanoscale thickness in such a way that one beam modulates the intensity of the other. We show that the interference of beams can elimi…
We conduct a theoretical study of the bistable optical response of a nanoparticle heterodimer comprised of a closely spaced semiconductor quantum dot and metal nanoparticle. The bistable nature of the response results from the interplay between the quantum dot's optical nonlinearity and its self-action (feedback) originating from the presence of the metal nanoparticle. We show that the feedback is governed by a complex valued coupling parameter $G$. Both the real and imaginary parts of $G$ ($G_\mathrm{R}$ and $G_\mathrm{I}$) play an important role in the occurrence of bistability, which is man…
Electromagnetic localization and existence of gap solitons in nonlinear metamaterials, which exhibit a stop band in their linear spectral response, is theoretically investigated. For a self-focusing Kerr nonlinearity, the equation for the electric field envelope with carrier frequency in the stop band - where the magnetic permeability $μ(ω)$ is positive and the dielectric permittivity $ε(ω)$ is negative - is described by a nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation with a dispersive nonlinear term. A family of standing and moving localized waves for both electric and magnetic fields is found, and the rol…

We introduce a discrete linear lossy system with an embedded "hot spot" (HS), i.e., a site carrying linear gain and complex cubic nonlinearity. The system can be used to model an array of optical or plasmonic waveguides, where selective excitation of particular cores is possible. Localized modes pinned to the HS are constructed in an implicit analytical form, and their stability is investigated numerically. Stability regions for the modes are obtained in the parameter space of the linear gain and cubic gain/loss. An essential result is that the interaction of the unsaturated cubic gain and sel…
The prospect of a system possessing two or more stable states for a given excitation condition is of topical interest with applications in information processing networks. In this work, we establish the remote transfer of bistability from a nonlinear resource in a dissipatively coupled two-mode system. As a clear advantage over coherently coupled settings, the dissipative nature of interaction is found to support a lower pumping threshold for bistable signals. For comparable parameters, the bistability threshold for dissipatively coupled systems is lower by a factor of about five. The resultin…
Functionality of many nonlinear and quantum optical devices relies on the effect of optical bistability. Using the microcavity exciton-polaritons in a honeycomb arrangement of microcavity pillars, we report the resonance response and bistability of the topological edge states. A balance between the pump, loss and nonlinearity ensures a broad range of dynamical stability and controls the distribution of power between counter-propagating states on the opposite edges of the honeycomb lattice stripe. Tuning energy and polarization of the pump photons, while keeping their momentum constant, we demo…
Graphene is a rising star in nonlinear optics due to its saturable absorption and giant Kerr nonlinearity, these properties are useful in digital optics based on optical nonlinear devices. However, practical applications require large optical nonlinearities and these are inherently limited by the interaction length of atomically thin graphene. Here, we demonstrate optical bistability in a Fabry Perot cavity containing monolayer and bilayer graphene which have been restructured to form nanobubbles. We find that graphene nanobubble can act as a new type of optical nonlinear media due to its vert…
We have investigated modulation instability in metamaterials (MM) with both cubic and quintic nonlinearities, based on a model appropriate for pulse propagation in MMs with cubic-quintic nonlinearities and higher order dispersive effects. We have included loss into account in our analysis and found that loss distorts the sidebands of the MI gain spectrum. We find that the combined effect of cubic-quintic nonlinearity increases the MI gain. The role of higher order nonlinear dispersive effects on MI has been also discussed.
We report on the demonstration of a femtosecond all-optical modulator providing, without nonlinearity and therefore at arbitrarily low intensity, ultrafast light-by-light control. The device engages the coherent interaction of optical waves on a metamaterial nanostructure only 30 nm thick to efficiently control absorption of near-infrared (750-1040 nm) femtosecond pulses, providing switching contrast ratios approaching 3:1 with a modulation bandwidth in excess of 2 THz. The functional paradigm illustrated here opens the path to a family of novel meta-devices for ultra-fast optical data process…
Nonlinear optics is an increasingly important field for scientific and technological applications, owing to its relevance and potential for optical and optoelectronic technologies. Currently, there is an active search for suitable nonlinear material systems with efficient conversion and small material footprint. Ideally, the material system should allow for chip-integration and room-temperature operation. Two-dimensional materials are highly interesting in this regard. Particularly promising is graphene, which has demonstrated an exceptionally large nonlinearity in the terahertz regime. Yet, t…
We demonstrate that the broadband nonlinear optical response of graphene can be resonantly enhanced by more than an order of magnitude through hybridization with a plasmonic metamaterial, while retaining an ultrafast nonlinear response time of ~1 ps. Transmission modulation close to ~1% is seen at a pump uence of ~0.03 mJ/cm^2 at the wavelength of ~1600 nm. This approach allows to engineer and enhance graphene's nonlinearity within a broad wavelength range enabling applications in optical switching, mode-locking and pulse shaping.
We investigate dissipative nonlinear dynamics in graphene-based active metamaterials composed of randomly dispersed graphene nano-flakes embedded within an externally pumped gain medium. We observe that graphene saturable nonlinearity produces a sub-critical bifurcation of nonlinear modes, enabling self-organization of the emitted radiation into several dissipative soliton structures with distinct topological charges. We systematically investigate the existence domains of such nonlinear waves and their spatio-temporal dynamics, finding that soliton vortices are unstable, thus enabling self-org…
We propose a scheme for creating of a maximally entangled state comprising two field quanta. In our scheme, two weak light fields, which are initially prepared in either coherent or polarization states, interact with a composite medium near an interface between a dielectric and a negative index metamaterial. Such interaction leads to a large Kerr nonlinearity, reduction of the group velocity of the light and significant confinement of the light fields while simultaneously avoiding amplitude losses of the incoming radiation. All these considerations make our scheme efficient.
