The excitation spectra of two-dimensional strongly coupled (liquid-like) Yukawa systems under the influence of a magnetic field perpendicular to the plane are found to sustain additional high-frequency modes at multiples of the magnetoplasmon. These modes are reminiscent of the well-known Bernstein modes but show a number of important differences due to the strong coupling of the particles.

The generation of higher harmonics of the magnetoplasmon frequency which has recently been reported in strongly coupled two-dimensional Yukawa systems is investigated in detail and, in addition, extended to two-dimensional Coulomb systems. We observe higher harmonics over a much larger frequency range than before and compare the theoretical prediction with the simulations. The influence of the coupling, structure, and thermal energy on the excitation of these modes is examined in detail. We also report on the effect of friction on the mode spectra to make predictions about the experimental obs…
The existence of plasma oscillations at multiples of the magnetoplasmon frequency in a strongly coupled two-dimensional magnetized Yukawa plasma is reported, based on extensive molecular dynamics simulations. These modes are the analogues of Bernstein modes which are renormalized by strong interparticle correlations. Their properties are theoretically explained by a dielectric function incorporating the combined effect of a magnetic field, strong correlations and finite temperature.
The power of second harmonic electromagnetic emission is calculated for the case when strong plasma turbulence is excited by a powerful electron beam in a magnetized plasma. It is shown that the simple analytical model of strong plasma turbulence with the assumption of a constant pump power is able to explain experimentally observed bursts of electromagnetic radiation as a consequence of separate collapse events. It is also found that the electromagnetic emission power calculated for three-wave interaction processes occurring in the long-wavelength part of turbulent spectrum is in order-of-mag…
The mechanism of harmonic generation in both O and X-mode configurations for a magnetized plasma has been explored here in detail with the help of Particle-In-Cell (PIC) simulations. A detailed characterization of both the reflected and transmitted electromagnetic radiation propagating in the bulk of the plasma has been carried out for this purpose. The efficiency of harmonic generation is shown to increase with the incident laser intensity. Dependency of harmonic efficiency has also been found on magnetic field strength. This work demonstrates that there is an optimum value of the magnetic fi…
Observations made in dusty plasma experiments suggest that an ensemble of electrically charged solid particles, confined in an elongated trap, develops structural inhomogeneities. With narrowing the trap the particles tend to form layers oriented parallel with the trap walls. In this work we present theoretical and numerical results on the structure of three-dimensional many-particle systems with screened Coulomb (Yukawa) inter-particle interaction in the strongly coupled liquid phase, confined in one-dimensional harmonic trap, forming quasi-2D configurations. Particle density profiles are cal…
Diffusion of dust particles is one of the most significant transport processes of strongly coupled dusty plasma that reflect the nature of inter particle interaction and characterize thermodynamics of the system. In this paper the effect of magnetic field on diffusion of dust particles in strongly coupled dusty plasma is investigated by using molecular dynamics simulations. Self- diffusion coefficients of Yukawa systems are obtained for a wide range of plasma parameters and magnetic field strength using Green- Kubo expression which is based on integrated velocity autocorrelation function (VACF…
The normal modes of a three-dimensional Yukawa plasma in an isotropic, harmonic confinement are investigated by solving the linearized cold fluid equations. The eigenmodes are found analytically and expressed in terms of hypergeometric functions. It is found that the mode frequencies solely depend on the dimensionless plasma parameter $ξ=κR$, where $R$ is the plasma radius and $κ$ the inverse screening length. The eigenfrequencies increase monotonically with $ξ$ and saturate in the limit $ξ\to\infty$. Compared with the results in the Coulomb limit~[D. H. E. Dubin, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{66},…
We analyze via theoretical approaches and molecular dynamics simulations the collective mode structure of strongly coupled two-dimensional binary Yukawa systems, for selected density, mass and charge ratios, both in the liquid and crystalline solid phases. Theoretically, the liquid phase is described through the Quasi-Localized Charge Approximation (QLCA) approach, while in the crystalline phase we study the centered honeycomb and the staggered rectangular crystal structures through the standard harmonic phonon approximation. We identify "longitudinal" and "transverse" acoustic and optic modes…
Plasmas in strong magnetic fields have been mainly studied in two distinct limiting cases--that of weak and strong nonideality with very different physical properties. While the former is well described by the familiar theory of Braginskii, the latter regime is closer to the behavior of a Coulomb liquid. Here we study in detail the transition between both regimes. We focus on the evolution of the dynamic structure factor of the magnetized one-component plasma from weak to strong coupling, which is studied with first-principle molecular dynamics simulations. The simulations show the vanishing o…
Thermally excited phonon spectra of 2D Yukawa solids and liquids in the presence of an external magnetic field are studied using computer simulations. Special attention is paid to the variation of wave spectra in terms of several key parameters, such as the strength of coupling, the screening parameter, and the intensity of the magnetic field. In addition, comparisons are made with several analytical theories, including random-phase approximation, quasi-localized charge approximation, and harmonic approximation, and the validity of those theories is discussed in the present context.
Previous studies on the beam-driven plasma emission process were done mainly for unmagnetized plasmas. Here we present fully-kinetic electromagnetic particle-in-cell simulations to investigate such process in weakly-magnetized plasmas of the solar corona conditions. The primary mode excited is the beam-Langmuir (BL) mode via the classical bump-on-tail instability. Other modes include the whistler (W) mode excited by the electron cyclotron resonance instability, the generalized Langmuir (GL) waves that include a superluminal Z-mode component with smaller wave number $k$ and a thermal Langmuir c…
Accurate and efficient plasma models are essential to understand and control experimental devices. Existing magnetohydrodynamic or kinetic models are nonlinear, computationally intensive, and can be difficult to interpret, while often only approximating the true dynamics. In this work, data-driven techniques recently developed in the field of fluid dynamics are leveraged to develop interpretable reduced-order models of plasmas that strike a balance between accuracy and efficiency. In particular, dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) is used to extract spatio-temporal magnetic coherent structures fr…
We derive dispersion relations for a system of identical particles confined in a two-dimensional annular harmonic well and which interact through a Yukawa potential, e.g., a dusty plasma ring. When the particles are in a single chain (i.e., a one-dimensional ring) we find a longitudinal acoustic mode and a transverse optical mode which show approximate agreement with the dispersion relation for a straight configuration for large radii of the ring. When the radius decreases, the dispersion relations modify: there appears an anticrossing of the modes near the crossing point resulting in a freque…
One of the fundamental eigenmodes of finite interacting systems is the mode of {\em uniform radial expansion and contraction} -- the ``breathing'' mode (BM). Here we show in a general way that this mode exists only under special conditions: i) for harmonically trapped systems with interaction potentials of the form $1/r^γ$ $(γ\in\mathbb{R}_{\neq0})$ or $\log(r)$, or ii) for some systems with special symmetry such as single shell systems forming platonic bodies. Deviations from the BM are demonstrated for two examples: clusters interacting with a Lennard-Jones potential and parabolically trappe…
