We study the spin diffusion in a two-dimensional electron gas at the interface of oxide heterostructure LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ grown on multiferroic TbMnO$_3$ at 15 K by means of the kinetic spin Bloch equation approach. The spiral magnetic moments of Mn$^{3+}$ in TbMnO$_3$ interact with the diffusing spins at the LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface via the Heisenberg exchange interaction. It is demonstrated that the spin diffusion length is always finite, despite the polarization direction of the injected spins. Our study also reveals the important role played by the Coulomb scattering, which can effectively suppress the spin diffusion.
We investigate the thermoelectric properties of electrons at the interface of oxide heterostructure and in the presence of a multiferroic oxide with spiral spin order. We find there is no (spin) Hall current generated by the temperature gradient. A Seebeck effect is however present. Due to the magnetoelectric coupling, the charge and thermal conductivities are electrically controllable via the spin spiral helicity. Moreover, the thermopower exhibits a sign change when tuning electro-statically the carrier density.
We predict the appearance of a persistent spin current in a two-dimensional electron gas formed at the interface of multiferroic oxides with a transverse helical magnetic order. No charge current is generated. This is the result of an effective spin-orbit coupling generated by the topology of the oxide local magnetic moments. The effective coupling and the generated spin current depend linearly on the magnetic spiral helicity which, due to the magneto-electric coupling, is tunable by a transverse electric field offering thus a new mean for the generation of electrically controlled persistent s…
We propose a modified spin-field-effect transistor fabricated in a two dimensional electron gas (2DEG) formed at the surface of multiferroic oxides with a transverse helical magnetic order. The topology of the oxide local magnetic moments induces a resonant momentum-dependent effective spin-orbit interaction acting on 2DEG. We show that spin polarization dephasing is strongly suppressed which is crucial for functionality. The carrier spin precession phase depend linearly on the magnetic spiral helicity. The latter is electrically controllable by virtue of the magento-electric effect. We also s…
Electric-field induced magnetization switching in multiferroic magnetoelectric devices is promising for beyond Moore's law computing. We show here that interface-coupled multiferroic heterostructures, i.e., a ferroelectric layer coupled with a ferromagnetic layer, are particularly suitable for highly-dense, non-volatile, and ultra-low-energy computing. By solving stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation of magnetization dynamics in the presence of room-temperature thermal fluctuations, we demonstrate that error-resilient switching of magnetization is possible in sub-nanosecond delay while e…
In multiferroic oxides with a transverse helical magnetic order, the magnetization exchange coupling is sinusoidally space-dependent. We theoretically investigate the spin-dependent electron grating effect in normal-metal/helical-multiferroic/ferromagnettic heterojunctions. The spin wave vector of the spiral can be added or subtracted from the electron spacial wave vector inducing spin-conserved and spin-flipped diffracted transmission and reflection. The predicted grating effect can be controlled by magnetization exchange coupling strength, the helicity spatial period, and the magnetization o…

We investigate the spin-dependent transport properties of a two-dimensional electron gas formed at oxides' interface in the presence of a magnetic field. We consider several scenarios for the oxides' properties, including oxides with co-linear or spiral magnetic and ferroelectric order. For spiral multiferroic oxides, the magnetoelectric coupling and the topology of the localized magnetic moments introduce additional, electric field controlled spin-orbit coupling that affects the magneto-oscillation of the current. An interplay of this spin-orbit coupling, the exchange field, and of the applie…
A spin dynamics approach has been used to study the behavior of the magnetic spins and the electric pseudo-spins in a 1-D composite multiferroic chain with a linear magneto-electric coupling at the interface. The response is investigated with either external magnetic or electric fields driving the system. The spin dynamics is based on the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation. A Gaussian white noise is later added into the dynamic process to include the thermal effects. The interface requires a closer inspection of the magneto-electric effects. Thus, we construct a 2-D ladder model to describe the …
We investigate theoretically the magnetic dynamics in a ferroelectric/ferromagnetic heterostructure coupled via strain-mediated magnetoelectric interaction. We predict an electric field-induced magnetic switching in the plane perpendicular to the magneto-crystalline easy axis, and trace this effect back to the piezoelectric control of the magnetoelastic coupling. We also investigate the magnetic remanence and the electric coercivity.
We investigate the absorption of a spin current at a ferromagnetic-metal/Pt-oxide interface by measuring current-induced ferromagnetic resonance. The spin absorption was characterized by the magnetic damping of the heterostructure. We show that the magnetic damping of a Ni$_{81}$Fe$_{19}$ film is clearly enhanced by attaching Pt-oxide on the Ni$_{81}$Fe$_{19}$ film. The damping enhancement is disappeared by inserting an ultrathin Cu layer between the Ni$_{81}$Fe$_{19}$ and Pt-oxide layers. These results demonstrate an essential role of the direct contact between the Ni$_{81}$Fe$_{19}$ and Pt-o…
The integration of graphene with complex-oxide heterostructures such as LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ offers the opportunity to combine the multifunctional properties of an oxide interface with the electronic properties of graphene. The ability to control interface conduction through graphene and understanding how it affects the intrinsic properties of an oxide interface are critical to the technological development of novel multifunctional devices. Here we demonstrate several device archetypes in which electron transport at an oxide interface is modulated using a patterned graphene top gate. Nanoscale …
Oxide heterostructures are of great interest both for fundamental and applicative reasons. In particular the two-dimensional electron gas at the LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ or LaTiO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interfaces displays many different physical properties and functionalities. However there are clear indications that the interface electronic state is strongly inhomogeneous and therefore it is crucially relevant to investigate possible intrinsic electronic mechanisms underlying this inhomogeneity. Here the electrostatic potential confining the electron gas at the interface is calculated self-consistently, fi…
The spin galvanic effect (SGE) describes the conversion of a non-equilibrium spin polarization into a transverse charge current. Recent experiments have demonstrated a large conversion efficiency for the two-dimensional electron gas formed at the interface between two insulating oxides, LaAlO$_3$ and SrTiO$_3$. Here we analyze the SGE for oxide interfaces within a three-band model for the Ti t$_{2g}$ orbitals which displays an interesting variety of effective spin-orbit couplings in the individual bands that contribute differently to the spin-charge conversion. Our analytical approach is suppl…
Strong Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC) of the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) at the oxide interface $\mathrm{LaAlO_{3}/SrTiO_{3}}$ underlies a variety of exotic physics, but its nature is still under debate. We derive an effective Hamiltonian for the 2DEG at the oxide interface $\mathrm{LaAlO_{3}/SrTiO_{3}}$ and find a different anisotropic Rashba SOC for the $d_{xz}$ and $d_{yz}$ orbitals. This anisotropic Rashba SOC leads to anisotropic static spin susceptibilities and also distinctive behavior of the spin Hall conductivity. These unique spin responses may be used to determine the natu…
Two-dimensional (2D) magnets have broad application prospects in the spintronics, but how to effectively control them with a small electric field is still an issue. Here we propose that 2D magnets can be efficiently controlled in a multiferroic heterostructure composed of 2D magnetic material and perovskite oxide ferroelectric (POF) whose dielectric polarization is easily flipped under a small electric field. We illustrate the feasibility of such strategy in the bilayer CrI3/BiFeO3(001) heterostructure by using the first-principles calculations. Different from the traditional POF multiferroic …
In a coupled ferroelectric/ferromagnetic system, i.e. a composite multiferroic, the propagation of magnetic or ferroelectric excitations across the whole structure is a key issue for applications. Of a special interest is the dynamics of localized magnetic or ferroelectric modes (LM) across the ferroelectric-ferromagnetic interface, particularly when the LM's carrier frequency is in the band of the ferroelectric and in the band gap of the ferromagnet. For a proper choice of the system's parameters, we find that there is a threshold amplitude above which the interface becomes transparent and a …
We use density functional theory calculations to show that the LaAlO3|SrTiO3 interface between insulating perovskite oxides is borderline in satisfying the Stoner criterion for itinerant ferromagnetism and explore other oxide combinations with a view to satisfying it more amply. The larger lattice parameter of an LaScO3|BaTiO3 interface is found to be less favorable than the greater interface distortion of LaAlO3|CaTiO3. Compared to LaAlO3|SrTiO3, the latter is predicted to exhibit robust magnetism with a larger saturation moment and a higher Curie temperature. Our results provide support for …
The two-dimensional metal forming at the interface between an oxide insulator and SrTiO3 provides new opportunities for oxide electronics. However, the quantum Hall effect, one of the most fascinating effects of electrons confined in two dimensions, remains underexplored at these complex oxide heterointerfaces. Here, we report the experimental observation of quantized Hall resistance in a SrTiO3 heterointerface based on the modulation-doped amorphous-LaAlO$_{3}$/SrTiO$_{3}$ heterostructure, which exhibits both high electron mobility exceeding 10000 cm$^{2}$/Vs and low carrier density on the or…
We measured the magnetoresistance of the 2D electron liquid formed at the (111) LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface. The hexagonal symmetry of the interface is manifested in a six-fold crystalline component appearing in the anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) and planar Hall data, which agree well with symmetry analysis we performed. The six-fold component increases with carrier concentration, reaching 15% of the total AMR signal. Our results suggest the coupling between higher itinerant electronic bands and the crystal as the origin of this effect and demonstrate that the (111) oxide interface is a…
A new nano-lithography technique compatible with conducting oxide interfaces, which requires a single lithographic step with no additional amorphous layer deposition or etching, is presented. It is demonstrated on SrTiO3/LaAlO3 interface where a constriction is patterned in the electron liquid. We find that an additional back-gating can further confine the electron liquid into an isolated island. Conductance and differential conductance measurements show resonant tunneling through the island. The data at various temperatures and magnetic fields are analyzed and the effective island size is fou…
We report on the study of both perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) at an oxide/ferromagnetic metal (FM) interface, i.e. BaTiO3 (BTO)/CoFeB. Thanks to the functional properties of the BTO film and the capability to precisely control its growth, we are able to distinguish the dominant role of the oxide termination (TiO2 vs BaO), from the moderate effect of ferroelectric polarization in the BTO film, on the PMA and DMI at the oxide/FM interface. We find that the interfacial magnetic anisotropy energy of the BaO-BTO/CoFeB structure is two times large…
The interface between the polar LaAlO$_3$ and nonpolar SrTiO$_3$ layers has been shown to exhibit various electronic and magnetic phases such as two dimensional electron gas, superconductivity, magnetism and electronic phase separation. These rich phases are expected due to the strong interplay between charge, spin and orbital degree of freedom at the interface between these complex oxides, leading to the electronic reconstruction in this system. However, until now all of these new properties have been studied extensively based on the interfaces which involve a polar LaAlO$_3$ layer. To invest…
