There is growing evidence of relativistic jets in radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 (RL-NLS1) galaxies. We constrain the observational properties of the radio emission in the first RL-NLS1 galaxy ever detected in gamma-rays, PMN J0948+0022, i.e., its flux density and structure in total intensity and in polarization, its compactness, and variability. We performed three real-time e-VLBI observations of PMN J0948+0022 at 22 GHz, using a global array including telescopes in Europe, East Asia, and Australia. These are the first e-VLBI science observations ever carried out with a global array, reaching a maximum baseline length of 12458 km. The observations were part of a large multiwavelength campaign in 2009. The source is detected at all three epochs. The structure is dominated by a bright component, more compact than 55 microarcsec, with a fainter component at a position angle theta~ 35deg. Relativistic beaming is required by the observed brightness temperature of 3.4x10^11 K. Polarization is detected at a level of about 1%. The parameters derived by the VLBI observations, in addition to the broad-band properties, confirm that PMN J0948+0022 is similar to flat spectrum radio quasars. Global e-VLBI is a reliable and promising technique for future studies.
The detection of gamma-ray emission by Fermi-LAT from the radio loud Narrow Line Seyfert 1 PMN J0948+0022 (Abdo et al. 2009, ApJ 699, 976) triggered a multi-wavelength campaign between March and July 2009. Given its high compactness (Doi et al. 2006, PASJ 58, 829), inverted spectrum, and 0deg declination, the source was an ideal target to observe at 22 GHz with a Global VLBI array extending from Europe to East Asia and Australia. In order to deliver prompt results to be analysed in combination with the other instruments participating in the campaign, the observations were carried out with real…
We report the discovery by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope of high-energy gamma-ray emission from the peculiar quasar PMN J0948+0022 (z=0.585+/-0.001). Contrary to the expectations, the optical spectrum of this quasar shows only narrow lines [FWHM(Hbeta) ~ 1500 km/s] and the typical characteristics of narrow-line Seyfert 1 type galaxies. However, the strong radio emission and the flat spectrum suggest the presence of a relativistic jet, which can now be confirmed by the detection of MeV-GeV photons. PMN J0948+0022 is therefore the first radio-loud nar…
We report on a multiwavelength campaign on the radio-loud Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) Galaxy PMN J0948+0022 (z=0.5846) performed in 2010 July-September and triggered by a high-energy gamma-ray outburst observed by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. The peak flux in the 0.1-100 GeV energy band exceeded, for the first time in this type of source, the value of 10^-6 ph cm^-2 s^-1, corresponding to an observed luminosity of 10^48 erg s^-1. Although the source was too close to the Sun position to organize a densely sampled follow-up, it was possible to gath…
We report on radio-to-gamma-ray observations during 2011 May-September of PMN J0948+0022, the first narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLSy1) galaxy detected in gamma-rays by Fermi-LAT. Strong variability was observed in gamma-rays, with two flaring periods peaking on 2011 June 20 and July 28. The variability observed in optical and near-infrared seems to have no counterpart in gamma-rays. This different behaviour could be related to a bending and inhomogeneous jet or a turbulent extreme multi-cell scenario. The radio spectra showed a variability pattern typical of relativistic jets. The XMM spectrum show…
Following the recent discovery of gamma rays from the radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy PMN J0948+0022 (z=0.5846), we started a multiwavelength campaign from radio to gamma rays, which was carried out between the end of March and the beginning of July 2009. The source displayed activity at all the observed wavelengths: a general decreasing trend from optical to gamma-ray frequencies was followed by an increase of radio emission after less than two months from the peak of the gamma-ray emission. The largest flux change, about a factor of about 4, occurred in the X-ray band. The smallest w…
In this letter, we report on dual-frequency European VLBI Network (EVN) observations of the faintest and least luminous radio cores in Seyfert nuclei, going to sub-mJy flux densities and radio luminosities around 10^19 W/Hz. We detect radio emission from the nuclear region of four galaxies (NGC 4051, NGC 4388, NGC 4501, and NGC 5033), while one (NGC 5273) is undetected at the level of ~100 microJy. The detected compact nuclei have rather different radio properties: spectral indices range from steep (alpha>0.7) to slightly inverted (alpha=-0.1), brightness temperatures vary from T_B=10^5 K to l…
We report on sensitive dual-frequency (1.7 and 5 GHz) European VLBI Network observations of the central region of nine Seyfert galaxies. These sources are among the faintest and least luminous members of a complete sample of nearby (d<22 Mpc) low luminosity AGNs. We detect radio emission on milliarcsecond scale in the nuclei of 4 galaxies, while for the other five sources we set an upper limit of <~100 microJy. In three sources, namely NGC 3227, NGC 3982, and NGC 4138, radio emission is detected at both 1.7 and 5 GHz and it is resolved in two or more components. We describe the structural and …
B2 0954+25A, detected by the {\it Fermi} satellite, is a blazar with interesting observational properties: it has been observed to transit from a jet dominated to a disk dominated state; its radio spectrum appears flat at all observing frequencies (down to 74 MHz); optically, the H$β$ line profile is asymmetric. The flatness of radio spectrum suggests that the isotropic emission from radio lobes is very weak, despite the large size of its jet ($\gtrsim$ 500 kpc). Its broad--band spectral energy distribution is surprisingly similar to that of the prototypical $γ$--ray, radio loud, Narrow Line S…
We report on observations of the γ-ray and optical photopolarimetric behavior of the radio-loud, narrow line type-1 Seyfert galaxy PMN J0948+0022 over a twenty seven month period. As this object has recently been suggested to represent a prototype of an emerging class of blazar-like objects, the observed properties are compared to those of blazars. We extract doubling timescales of roughly 4 hours for the optical and γ-ray bands. The rapid microvariability in the optical/NIR, significant and variable optical polarization, and strong yet rapidly-variable γ-ray emission we observe for PMN J0948+…
We report the discovery with Fermi/LAT of gamma-ray emission from three radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies: PKS 1502+036 (z=0.409), 1H 0323+342 (z=0.061) and PKS 2004-447 (z=0.24). In addition to PMN J0948+0022 (z=0.585), the first source of this type to be detected in gamma rays, they may form an emerging new class of gamma-ray active galactic nuclei (AGN). These findings can have strong implications on our knowledge about relativistic jets and the unified model of AGN.
We present a census of sub-pc scale properties of the VLBI cores in a complete sample of local Seyfert galaxies. Seventeen out of 23 sources with a VLA detection are detected also with VLBI at 1.7 GHz and/or 5 GHz, with an average monochromatic radio luminosity log [P (5\, GHz) W Hz^{-1} = 19.4. Radio cores are of heterogeneous nature, the majority of them showing elongated structures or accompanied by extra components, broad ranges of brightness temperatures (10^{5}-10^{10} K) and spectral indices (from steep to highly inverted). Interestingly, the detection rate (26%) of water maser emission…
Active galactic nuclei (AGNs) exhibit variability across the entire electromagnetic spectrum with distinct flaring episodes at different frequencies. The high sensitivity and nearly uniform sky coverage of the Large Area Telescope on board the Fermi satellite make it a powerful tool for monitoring a large number of AGNs over long timescales. This allowed us to detect several flaring AGNs in gamma rays, triggering dedicated multifrequency campaigns on these sources from radio to TeV energies. We discuss the results for two different types of flaring AGN: the flat spectrum radio quasar 3C 279, i…
We present the compact radio structure of three radio-loud narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxies from VLBA archive data at 2.3, 5 and 8.4 GHz. In RXS J16290+4007, the radio structure is mostly unresolved. The combination of compact radio structure, high brightness temperature and inverted spectrum between simultaneous 2.3 and 8.4 GHz, strongly favors jet relativistic beaming. Combining with the VLBI data at 1.6 and 8.4 GHz from literatures, we argued that RXS J16333+4718 may also harbor a relativistic jet, with resolved core-jet structure in 5 GHz. B3 1702+457 is clearly resolved with well defined je…
Comparison of 8.4-GHz radio images of a sample of 11 early-type Seyfert galaxies with previous observations reveals possible variation in the nuclear radio flux density in 5 of them over a 7-yr period. We find no correlation between radio variability and nuclear radio luminosity or Seyfert nuclear type, although the sample is small and dominated by type 2 Seyferts. Instead, a possible correlation between the presence of nuclear radio variability and the absence of ~100-pc-scale radio emission is seen. NGC2110 is the only source with significant extended radio structure and strong nuclear varia…
In 2008, the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope has revealed - for the first time - high-energy (E > 100 MeV) gamma rays from a few Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 Galaxies (NLS1s). Later, in 2009 and 2010, two multifrequency campaigns on one of these sources, PMN J0948+0022 (z=0.585), definitely confirmed the presence, in sources of this type, of a relativistic jet very similar and with comparable power to those in blazars. However, these sources are neither blazars nor radio galaxies, as proven by their optical spectrum and by their very compact radio morphology. Moreover, since NLS1s are generally hoste…
We conducted Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations of seven nearby narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies at 1.7 GHz (18cm) with milli-arcsecond resolution. This is the first systematic very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) study focusing on the central parsec-scale regions of radio-quiet NLS1s. Five of the seven were detected at a brightness temperature of >~5x10^6 K and contain radio cores with high brightness temperatures of >6x10^7 K, indicating a nonthermal process driven by jet-producing central engines as is observed in radio-loud NLS1s and other active galactic nucleus (AGN) c…
We conducted very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations of five radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies in milliarcsecond resolutions at 1.7 GHz (18 cm) using the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA). Significant parsec-scale structures were revealed for three out of the five sources with high brightness temperature by direct imaging; this is convincing evidence for nonthermal jets. FBQS J1644+2619 with an inverted spectrum showed a prominent one-sided linear structure, indicating Doppler beaming with an intrinsic jet speed of >0.74c. FBQS J1629+4007, also with an inverted spect…
We present the results of single-dish and VLBI observations for the water-vapor masers at the nucleus of the Seyfert 2, IC 2560. We monitored velocities of the maser features with the 45-m telescope of the Nobeyama Radio Observatory. Using the data of 1995--2006, the velocity drift rate was detected to be a = +2.57 +/- 0.04 km/s/yr on the average for 6 systemic features. The Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) with the Very Large Array (VLA) firstly detected a red-shifted and a blue-shifted maser features of IC 2560, in addition to systemic maser features and a continuum component. We propose a ma…
We present intensive quasi-simultaneous X-ray and radio monitoring of the narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4051, over a 16 month period in 2000-2001. Observations were made with the Rossi Timing X-ray Explorer (RXTE) and the Very Large Array (VLA) at 8.4 and 4.8 GHz. In the X-ray band NGC 4051 behaves much like a Galactic black hole binary (GBH) system in a `soft-state'. In such systems, there has so far been no firm evidence for an active, radio-emitting jet like those found in `hard state' GBHs. VLBI observations of NGC 4051 show three co-linear compact components. This structure resembles t…
We present the results of high resolution VLBI observations at 1.6 and 4.9 GHz of the radio-loud Seyfert galaxy, Mrk 6. These observations are able to detect a compact radio core in this galaxy for the first time. The core has an inverted spectral index ($α^{1.6}_{4.9}$=+1.0$\pm$0.2) and a brightness temperature of $1\times10^8$ K. Three distinct radio components which resemble jet elements and/or hot spots, are also detected. The position angles of these elongated jet elements point, not only to a curved jet in Mrk 6, but also towards a connection between the AGN and the kpc-scale radio lobes…
