We study Anderson localization and propagation of partially-spatially incoherent wavepackets in linear disordered potentials, motivated by the insight that interference phenomena resulting from multiple scattering are affected by the coherence of the waves. We find that localization is delayed by incoherence: the more incoherent the waves are, the longer they diffusively spread while propagating in the medium. However, if all the eigenmodes of the system are exponentially localized (as in one- and two-dimensional disordered systems), any partially-incoherent wavepacket eventually exhibits localization with exponentially-decaying tails, after sufficiently long propagation distances. Interestingly, we find that the asymptotic behavior of the incoherent beam is similar to that of a single instantaneous coherent realization of the beam.
We demonstrate that sub-wavelength optical images borne on partially-spatially-incoherent light can be recovered, from their far-field or from the blurred image, given the prior knowledge that the image is sparse, and only that. The reconstruction method relies on the recently demonstrated sparsity-based sub-wavelength imaging. However, for partially-spatially-incoherent light, the relation between the measurements and the image is quadratic, yielding non-convex measurement equations that do not conform to previously used techniques. Consequently, we demonstrate new algorithmic methodology, re…
We demonstrate numerically that partially incoherent light can be trapped in the spectral band gaps of a photonic lattice, creating partially incoherent multi-component spatial optical solitons in a self-defocusing nonlinear periodic medium. We find numerically such incoherent multi-gap optical solitons and discuss how to generate them in experiment by interfering incoherent light beams at the input of a nonlinear periodic medium.
Based on the Wigner distribution approach, an analysis of the effect of partial incoherence on the transverse instability of soliton structures in nonlinear Kerr media is presented. It is explicitly shown, that for a Lorentzian incoherence spectrum the partial incoherence gives rise to a damping which counteracts, and tends to suppress, the transverse instability growth. However, the general picture is more complicated and it is shown that the effect of the partial incoherence depends crucially on the form of the incoherence spectrum. In fact, for spectra with finite rms-width, the partial inc…
We present the first experimental observation of modulation instability of partially spatially incoherent light beams in non-instantaneous nonlinear media. We show that even in such a nonlinear partially coherent system (of weakly-correlated particles) patterns can form spontaneously. Incoherent MI occurs above a specific threshold that depends on the beams' coherence properties (correlation distance), and leads to a periodic train of one-dimensional (1D) filaments. At a higher value of nonlinearity, incoherent MI displays a two-dimensional (2D) instability and leads to self-ordered arrays of …
A generalized Wigner-Moyal statistical theory of radiation is used to obtain a general dispersion relation for Stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS) driven by a broadband radiation field with arbitrary statistics. The monochromatic limit is recovered from our general result, reproducing the classic monochromatic dispersion relation. The behavior of the growth rate of the instability as a simultaneous function of the bandwidth of the pump wave, the intensity of the incident field and the wave number of the scattered wave is further explored by numerically solving the dispersion relation. Our re…
Analyses based on quantum metrology have shown that the ability to localize the positions of two incoherent point sources can be significantly enhanced through the use of mode sorting. Here we theoretically and experimentally investigate the effect of partial coherence on the sub-diffraction limit localization of two sources based on parity sorting. With the prior information of a negative and real-valued degree of coherence, higher Fisher information is obtained than that for the incoherent case. Our results pave the way to clarifying the role of coherence in quantum limited metrology.
In absence of a lens to form an image, incoherent or partially coherent light scattering off an obstructive or reflective object forms a broad intensity distribution in the far field with only feeble spatial features. We show here that measuring the complex spatial coherence function can help in the identification of the size and location of a one-dimensional object placed in the path of a partially coherent light source. The complex coherence function is measured in the far field through wavefront sampling, which is performed via dynamically reconfigurable slits implemented on a digital micro…
We present a class of diffraction-free partially coherent beams each member of which is comprised of a finite power, non-accelerating Airy bump residing on a statistically homogeneous, Gaussian-correlated background. We examine free-space propagation of soft apertured realizations of the proposed beams and show that their evolution is governed by two spatial scales: the coherence width of the background and aperture size. A relative magnitude of these factors determines the practical range of propagation distances over which the novel beams can withstand diffraction. The proposed beams can fin…
We propose and demonstrate a novel method for generating propagation-invariant spatially-stationary fields in a controllable manner. Our method relies on producing incoherent mixtures of plane waves using planar primary sources that are spatially completely uncorrelated. The strengths of the individual plane waves in the mixture decide the exact functional form of the generated coherence function. We use LEDs as the primary incoherent sources and experimentally demonstrate the effectiveness of our method by generating several spatially-stationary fields, including a new type, which we refer to…
This tutorial review gives an overview of the transverse Anderson localization of light in one and two transverse dimensions. A pedagogical approach is followed throughout the presentation, where many aspects of localization are illustrated by means of a few simple models. The tutorial starts with some basic aspects of random matrix theory, and light propagation through and reflection from a random stack of dielectric slabs. Transverse Anderson localization of light in one- and two-dimensional coupled waveguide arrays is subsequently established and discussed. Recent experimental observations …
The two-point complex coherence function constitutes a complete representation for scalar quasi-monochromatic optical fields. Exploiting dynamically reconfigurable slits implemented with a digital micromirror device, we report on measurements of the complex two-point coherence function for partially coherent light scattering from a `scene' comprising one or two objects at different transverse and axial positions with respect to the source. Although the intensity shows no discernible shadows in absence of a lens, numerically back-propagating the measured complex coherence function allows estima…
During the last 30 years, the search for Anderson localization of light in three-dimensional (3D) disordered samples yielded a number of experimental observations that were first considered successful, then disputed by opponents, and later refuted by their authors. This includes recent results for light in TiO_2 powders that T. Sperling et al. now show to be due to fluorescence and not to Anderson localization (New J. Phys. 18 (2016) 013039). The difficulty of observing Anderson localization of light in 3D may be due to a number of factors: insufficient optical contrast between the components …
It is shown that the properties of the modulational instability of partially coherent waves propagating in a nonlinear Kerr medium depend crucially on the profile of the incoherent field spectrum. Under certain conditions, the incoherence may even enhance, rather than suppress, the instability. In particular, it is found that the range of modulationally unstable wave numbers does not necessarily decrease monotonously with increasing degree of incoherence and that the modulational instability may still exist even when long wavelength perturbations are stable.
We study numerically and experimentally the impact of temporal randomness on the formation of analogue optical blast-waves in nonlinear fiber optics. The principle-of-operation is based on a two-components nonlinear interaction occurring between a partially coherent probe wave co-propagating in a normally dispersive optical fiber together with an orthogonally polarized intense short pulse. The cross-polarized interaction induces a dual phase-singularity in the probe profile which leads to the formation of two sharp fronts of opposite velocities. An optical blast-wave is then generated and lead…

Inspired by the concept of coherent frozen waves, this paper introduces one possible theoretical framework of its partially coherent version, a frozen spatial coherence, in which a desired two-point correlation structure of an optical field is created on the propagation axis by superposing partially coherent zero-order Bessel beams. It is shown that the cross-spectral density can be given a description in terms of a two-dimensional Fourier series, analogous to the one-dimensional approach of coherent frozen waves. The formalism is applied to the design of a partially coherent field which is hi…
We introduce the mode connectivity as a measure of the number of eigenmodes of a wave equation connecting two points at a given frequency. Based on numerical simulations of scattering of electromagnetic waves in disordered media, we show that the connectivity discriminates between the diffusive and the Anderson localized regimes. For practical measurements, the connectivity is encoded in the second-order coherence function characterizing the intensity emitted by two incoherent classical or quantum dipole sources. The analysis applies to all processes in which spatially localized modes build up…
We present spatial coherence measurements of partially coherent light in the far-field of incoherent sources with an experimental setup based on the Thompson-Wolf and Partanen-Turunen-Tervo experiments, to be performed in the context of a possible solar coherence measurement space instrument. The optical setup consists of a telescope to collimate light from a source, to diffract it by a digital micromirror device implementing a Young double-aperture interferometer in retroreflection mode, and finally to image the source into a two-dimensional sensor. Two multimode optical fibers with different…
The propagation of hard X ray beam from partially coherent synchrotron source is simulated by using the novel method based on the coherent mode decomposition of Gaussian Schell model and wave front propagation. We investigate how the coherency properties and intensity distributions of the beam are changed by propagation through optical elements. Here, we simulate and analyze the propagation of the partially coherent radiation transmitted through an ideal slit. We present the first simulations for focusing partially coherent synchrotron hard X ray beams using this novel method. And when compare…
The image reconstruction of partially coherent light is interpreted as the quantum state reconstruction. The efficient method based on maximum-likelihood estimation is proposed to acquire information from registered intensity measurements affected by noise. The connection with totally incoherent image restoration is pointed out. The feasibility of the method is demonstrated numerically. Spatial and correlation details significantly smaller than the diffraction limit are revealed in the reconstructed pattern.
Rogue waves are extreme and rare fluctuations of the wave field that have been discussed in many physical systems. Their presence substantially influences the statistical properties of an incoherent wave field. Their understanding is fundamental for the design of ships and offshore platforms. Except for very particular meteorological conditions, waves in the ocean are characterised by the so-called JONSWAP (Joint North Sea Wave Project) spectrum. Here we compare two unique experimental results: the first one has been performed in a 270-meter wave tank and the other in optical fibers. In both c…
