We consider spatially coupled code ensembles over a multiple access channel. Convolutional LDPC ensembles are one instance of spatially coupled codes. It was shown recently that, for transmission over the binary erasure channel, this coupling of individual code ensembles has the effect of increasing the belief propagation threshold of the coupled ensembles to the maximum a-posteriori threshold of the underlying ensemble. In this sense, spatially coupled codes were shown to be capacity achieving. It was observed, empirically, that these codes are universal in the sense that they achieve performance close to the Shannon threshold for any general binary-input memoryless symmetric channels.
In this work we provide further evidence of the threshold saturation phenomena when transmitting over a class of multiple access channel. We show, by density evolution analysis and EXIT curves, that the belief propagation threshold of the coupled ensembles is very close to the ultimate Shannon limit.
In this paper we propose a new class of spatially coupled codes based on repeat-accumulate protographs. We show that spatially coupled repeat-accumulate codes have several advantages over spatially coupled low-density parity-check codes including simpler encoders and slightly higher code rates than spatially coupled low-density parity-check codes with similar thresholds and decoding complexity (as measured by the Tanner graph edge density).
We consider spatially-coupled protograph-based LDPC codes for the three terminal erasure relay channel. It is observed that BP threshold value, the maximal erasure probability of the channel for which decoding error probability converges to zero, of spatially-coupled codes, in particular spatially-coupled MacKay-Neal code, is close to the theoretical limit for the relay channel. Empirical results suggest that spatially-coupled protograph-based LDPC codes have great potential to achieve theoretical limit of a general relay channel.
This paper addresses the reconstruction of sparse signals from spatially coupled, linear, and noisy measurements. A unified framework of rigorous state evolution is established for developing long-memory message-passing (LM-MP) in spatially coupled systems. LM-MP utilizes all previous messages to compute the current message while conventional MP only uses the latest messages. The unified framework is utilized to propose orthogonal approximate message-passing (OAMP) for spatially coupled systems. The framework for LM-MP is used as a technical tool to prove the convergence of state evolution for…
The threshold, or saturation phenomenon of spatially coupled systems is revisited in the light of Lyapunov's theory of dynamical systems. It is shown that an application of Lyapunov's direct method can be used to quantitatively describe the threshold phenomenon, prove convergence, and compute threshold values. This provides a general proof methodology for the various systems recently studied. Examples of spatially coupled systems are given and their thresholds are computed.
Spatially-coupled low-density parity-check codes attract much attention due to their capacity-achieving performance and a memory-efficient sliding-window decoding algorithm. On the other hand, the encoder needs to solve large linear equations to terminate the encoding process. In this paper, we propose modified spatially-coupled codes. The modified $(\dl,\dr,L)$ codes have less rate-loss, i.e., higher coding rate, and have the same threshold as $(\dl,\dr,L)$ codes and are efficiently terminable by using an accumulator.
Recent development in compressed sensing (CS) has revealed that the use of a special design of measurement matrix, namely the spatially-coupled matrix, can achieve the information-theoretic limit of CS. In this paper, we consider the measurement matrix which consists of the spatially-coupled \emph{orthogonal} matrices. One example of such matrices are the randomly selected discrete Fourier transform (DFT) matrices. Such selection enjoys a less memory complexity and a faster multiplication procedure. Our contributions are the replica calculations to find the mean-square-error (MSE) of the Bayes…
Raptor codes are known as precoded rateless codes that achieve the capacity of BEC. However the maximum degree of Raptor codes needs to be unbounded to achieve the capacity. In this paper, we prove that spatially-coupled precoded rateless codes achieve the capacity with bounded degree under BP decoding.
Obata et al. proved that spatially-coupled (SC) MacKay-Neal (MN) codes achieve the capacity of BEC. However, the SC-MN codes codes have many variable nodes of degree two and have higher error floors. In this paper, we prove that SC-MN codes with no variable nodes of degree two achieve the capacity of BEC.
We study spatially coupled LDPC codes that allow access to sub-blocks much smaller than the full code block. Sub-block access is realized by a semi-global decoder that decodes a chosen target sub-block by only accessing the target, plus a prescribed number of helper sub-blocks adjacent in the code chain. This paper develops a theoretical methodology for analyzing the semi-global decoding performance of spatially coupled LDPC codes constructed from protographs. The main result shows that semi-global decoding thresholds can be derived from certain thresholds we define for the single-sub-block gr…
A spatially "Mt. Fuji" coupled low-density parity check (LDPC) ensemble is a modified version of the original spatially coupled (SC) LDPC ensemble. Its desirable properties are first observed in experimentally. The decoding error probability in the error floor region over the binary erasure channel (BEC) is theoretically analyzed later. In this paper, as the last piece of the theoretical analysis over the BEC, we analyze the decoding error probability in the waterfall region by modifying the covariance evolution which has been used to analyze the original SC-LDPC ensemble.
This paper analyzes general spatially-coupled (SC) systems with multi-dimensional coupling. A continuum approximation is used to derive potential functions that characterize the performance of the SC systems. For any dimension of coupling, it is shown that, if the boundary of the SC systems is fixed to the unique stable solution that minimizes the potential over all stationary solutions, the systems can approach the optimal performance as the number of coupled systems tends to infinity.
Spatially-coupled LDPC codes are known to have excellent asymptotic properties. Much less is known regarding their finite-length performance. We propose a scaling law to predict the error probability of finite-length spatially-coupled ensembles when transmission takes place over the binary erasure channel. We discuss how the parameters of the scaling law are connected to fundamental quantities appearing in the asymptotic analysis of these ensembles and we verify that the predictions of the scaling law fit well to the data derived from simulations over a wide range of parameters. The ultimate g…
Spatially-coupled (SC) codes are constructed by coupling many regular low-density parity-check codes in a chain. The decoding chain of SC codes stops when facing burst erasures. This problem can not be overcome by increasing coupling number. In this paper, we introduce multi-dimensional (MD) SC codes. Numerical results show that 2D-SC codes are more robust to the burst erasures than 1D-SC codes. Furthermore, we consider designing MD-SC codes with smaller rateloss.
We consider the dynamics of belief propagation decoding of spatially coupled Low-Density Parity-Check codes. It has been conjectured that after a short transient phase, the profile of "error probabilities" along the spatial direction of a spatially coupled code develops a uniquely-shaped wave-like solution that propagates with constant velocity v. Under this assumption, and for transmission over general Binary Memoryless Symmetric channels, we derive a formula for v. We also propose approximations that are simpler to compute and support our findings using numerical data.
In this paper, we highlight the class of spatially coupled codes and discuss their applicability to long-haul and submarine optical communication systems. We first demonstrate how to optimize irregular spatially coupled LDPC codes for their use in optical communications with limited decoding hardware complexity and then present simulation results with an FPGA-based decoder where we show that very low error rates can be achieved and that conventional block-based LDPC codes can be outperformed. In the second part of the paper, we focus on the combination of spatially coupled LDPC codes with diff…
Sparse superposition codes, also called sparse regression codes (SPARCs), are a class of codes for efficient communication over the AWGN channel at rates approaching the channel capacity. In a standard SPARC, codewords are sparse linear combinations of columns of an i.i.d. Gaussian design matrix, while in a spatially coupled SPARC the design matrix has a block-wise structure, where the variance of the Gaussian entries can be varied across blocks. A well-designed spatial coupling structure can significantly enhance the error performance of iterative decoding algorithms such as Approximate Messa…
We propose a refined scaling law to predict the finite-length performance in the waterfall region of spatially coupled low-density parity-check codes over the binary erasure channel. In particular, we introduce some improvements to the scaling law proposed by Olmos and Urbanke that result in a better agreement between the predicted and simulated frame error rate. We also show how the scaling law can be extended to predict the bit error rate performance.
In this paper, we study the density evolution analysis of spatially coupled low-density parity-check (SC-LDPC) codes over binary input additive white Gaussian noise (BIAWGN) channels under the belief propagation (BP) decoding algorithm. Using reciprocal channel approximation and Gaussian approximation, we propose averaging techniques for the density evolution of SC-LDPC codes over BIAWGN channels. We show that the proposed techniques can closely predict the decoding threshold while offering reduced complexity compared to the existing multi-edge-type density evolution.
Recently, it has been observed that terminated low-density-parity-check (LDPC) convolutional codes (or spatially-coupled codes) appear to approach capacity universally across the class of binary memoryless channels. This is facilitated by the "threshold saturation" effect whereby the belief-propagation (BP) threshold of the spatially-coupled ensemble is boosted to the maximum a-posteriori (MAP) threshold of the underlying constituent ensemble. In this paper, we consider the universality of spatially-coupled codes over intersymbol-interference (ISI) channels under joint iterative decoding. More…
The equivalence of peeling decoding (PD) and Belief Propagation (BP) for low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes over the binary erasure channel is analyzed. Modifying the scheduling for PD, it is shown that exactly the same variable nodes (VNs) are resolved in every iteration than with BP. The decrease of erased VNs during the decoding process is analyzed instead of resolvable equations. This quantity can also be derived with density evolution, resulting in a drastic decrease in complexity. Finally, a scaling law using this quantity is established for spatially coupled LDPC codes.
This paper investigates the belief propagation decoding of spatially-coupled MacKay-Neal (SC-MN) codes over erasure channels with memory. We show that SC-MN codes with bounded degree universally achieve the symmetric information rate (SIR) of arbitrary erasure channels with memory. We mean by universality the following sense: the sender does not need to know the whole channel statistics but needs to know only the SIR, while the receiver estimates the transmitted codewords from channel statistics and received words. The proof is based on potential function.
Spatially coupled (SC) interleaving is proposed to improve the performance of iterative multiuser detection and decoding (MUDD) for quasi-static fading multiple-input multiple-output systems. The linear minimum mean-squared error (LMMSE) demodulator is used to reduce the complexity and to avoid error propagation. Furthermore, sliding window MUDD is proposed to circumvent an increase of the decoding latency due to SC interleaving. Theoretical and numerical analyses show that SC interleaving can improve the performance of the iterative LMMSE MUDD for regular low-density parity-check codes.
Spatially coupled low-density parity-check codes show an outstanding performance under the low-complexity belief propagation (BP) decoding algorithm. They exhibit a peculiar convergence phenomenon above the BP threshold of the underlying non-coupled ensemble, with a wave-like convergence propagating through the spatial dimension of the graph, allowing to approach the MAP threshold. We focus on this particularly interesting regime in between the BP and MAP thresholds. On the binary erasure channel, it has been proved that the information propagates with a constant speed toward the successful de…
We investigate the performance of coded modulation for multi-hop regenerative optical networks. We analyze options for computing decoder input LLRs, show reach increases by optimized regenerator placement and experimentally compare strategies and guidelines for distributed FEC.
For a given family of spatially coupled codes, we prove that the LP threshold on the BSC of the graph cover ensemble is the same as the LP threshold on the BSC of the derived spatially coupled ensemble. This result is in contrast with the fact that the BP threshold of the derived spatially coupled ensemble is believed to be larger than the BP threshold of the graph cover ensemble as noted by the work of Kudekar et al. (2011, 2012). To prove this, we establish some properties related to the dual witness for LP decoding which was introduced by Feldman et al. (2007) and simplified by Daskalakis e…
Kudekar et al. recently proved that for transmission over the binary erasure channel (BEC), spatial coupling of LDPC codes increases the BP threshold of the coupled ensemble to the MAP threshold of the underlying LDPC codes. One major drawback of the capacity-achieving spatially-coupled LDPC codes is that one needs to increase the column and row weight of parity-check matrices of the underlying LDPC codes. It is proved, that Hsu-Anastasopoulos (HA) codes and MacKay-Neal (MN) codes achieve the capacity of memoryless binary-input symmetric-output channels under MAP decoding with bounded column a…
Several authors have proposed spatially-coupled (or convolutional-like) variants of product codes (PCs). In this paper, we focus on a parametrized family of generalized PCs that recovers some of these codes (e.g., staircase and block-wise braided codes) as special cases and study the iterative decoding performance over the binary erasure channel. Even though our code construction is deterministic (and not based on a randomized ensemble), we show that it is still possible to rigorously derive the density evolution (DE) equations that govern the asymptotic performance. The obtained DE equations …
The peeling decoding for spatially coupled low-density parity-check (SC-LDPC) codes is analyzed for a binary erasure channel. An analytical calculation of the mean evolution of degree-one check nodes of protograph-based SC-LDPC codes is given and an estimate for the covariance evolution of degree-one check nodes is proposed in the stable decoding phase where the decoding wave propagates along the chain of coupled codes. Both results are verified numerically. Protograph-based SC-LDPC codes turn out to have a more robust behavior than unstructured random SC-LDPC codes. Using the analytically cal…
We investigate spatially coupled code ensembles. For transmission over the binary erasure channel, it was recently shown that spatial coupling increases the belief propagation threshold of the ensemble to essentially the maximum a-priori threshold of the underlying component ensemble. This explains why convolutional LDPC ensembles, originally introduced by Felstrom and Zigangirov, perform so well over this channel. We show that the equivalent result holds true for transmission over general binary-input memoryless output-symmetric channels. More precisely, given a desired error probability and …
In this paper, we give an overview of spatially coupled turbo codes (SC-TCs), the spatial coupling of parallel and serially concatenated convolutional codes, recently introduced by the authors. For presentation purposes, we focus on spatially coupled serially concatenated codes (SC-SCCs). We review the main principles of SC-TCs and discuss their exact density evolution (DE) analysis on the binary erasure channel. We also consider the construction of a family of rate-compatible SC-SCCs with simple 4-state component encoders. For all considered code rates, threshold saturation of the belief prop…
In this paper, we discuss the potential for improvement of the simple random access scheme by utilizing local information such as the received signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (SINR). We propose a spatially adaptive random access (SARA) scheme in which the transmitters in the network utilize different transmit probabilities depending on the local situation. In our proposed scheme, the transmit probability is adaptively updated by the ratio of the received SINR and the target SINR. We investigate the performance of the spatially adaptive random access scheme. For the comparison, we deriv…
We consider spatially coupled low-density parity-check codes with finite smoothing parameters. A finite smoothing parameter is important for designing practical codes that are decoded using low-complexity windowed decoders. By optimizing the amount of coupling between spatial positions, we show that we can construct codes with improved decoding speed compared with conventional, uniform smoothing constructions. This leads to a significantly better performance under decoder complexity constraints while keeping the degree distribution regular. We optimize smoothing configurations using differenti…
Spatial coupling was proved to improve the belief-propagation (BP) performance up to the maximum-a-posteriori (MAP) performance. This paper addresses an extended class of spatially coupled (SC) systems. A potential function is derived for characterizing a lower bound on the BP performance of the extended SC systems, and shown to be different from the potential for the conventional SC systems. This may imply that the BP performance for the extended SC systems does not coincide with the MAP performance for the corresponding uncoupled system. SC bit-interleaved coded modulation with iterative dec…
Spatial coupling has recently emerged as a powerful paradigm to construct graphical models that work well under low-complexity message-passing algorithms. Although much progress has been made on the analysis of spatially coupled models under message passing, there is still room for improvement, both in terms of simplifying existing proofs as well as in terms of proving additional properties. We introduce one further tool for the analysis, namely the concept of displacement convexity. This concept plays a crucial role in the theory of optimal transport and, quite remarkably, it is also well sui…
In this letter, we propose a reliability-based windowed decoding scheme for spatially-coupled (SC) low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. To mitigate the error propagation along the sliding windowed decoder of the SC LDPC codes, a partial message reservation (PMR) method is proposed where only the reliable messages generated in the previous decoding window are reserved for the next decoding window. We also propose a partial syndrome check (PSC) stopping rule for each decoding window, in which only the complete VNs are checked. Simulation results show that our proposed scheme significantly impr…
In this paper we prove threshold saturation for spatially coupled turbo codes (SC-TCs) and braided convolutional codes (BCCs) over the binary erasure channel. We introduce a compact graph representation for the ensembles of SC-TC and BCC codes which simplifies their description and the analysis of the message passing decoding. We demonstrate that by few assumptions in the ensembles of these codes, it is possible to rewrite their vector recursions in a form which places these ensembles under the category of scalar admissible systems. This allows us to define potential functions and prove thresh…
Families of generalized spatially-coupled low-density parity-check (GSC-LDPC) code ensembles can be formed by terminating protograph-based generalized LDPC convolutional (GLDPCC) codes. It has previously been shown that ensembles of GSC-LDPC codes constructed from a protograph have better iterative decoding thresholds than their block code counterparts, and that, for large termination lengths, their thresholds coincide with the maximum a-posteriori (MAP) decoding threshold of the underlying generalized LDPC block code ensemble. Here we show that, in addition to their excellent iterative decodi…
Spatially-coupled (SC) LDPC codes have recently emerged as an excellent choice for error correction in modern data storage and communication systems due to their outstanding performance. It has long been known that irregular graph codes offer performance advantage over their regular counterparts. In this paper, we present a novel combinatorial framework for designing finite-length irregular SC LDPC codes. Our irregular SC codes have the desirable properties of regular SC codes thanks to their structure while offering significant performance benefits that come with the node degree irregularity.…
In this paper we investigate the effect of spatial coupling applied to the recently-proposed coded slotted ALOHA (CSA) random access protocol. Thanks to the bridge between the graphical model describing the iterative interference cancelation process of CSA over the random access frame and the erasure recovery process of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes over the binary erasure channel (BEC), we propose an access protocol which is inspired by the convolutional LDPC code construction. The proposed protocol exploits the terminations of its graphical model to achieve the spatial coupling effec…
Spatially-coupled low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes, which were first introduced as LDPC convolutional codes, have been shown to exhibit excellent performance under low-complexity belief-propagation decoding. This phenomenon is now termed threshold saturation via spatial coupling. Spatially-coupled codes have been successfully applied in numerous areas. In particular, it was proven that spatially-coupled regular LDPC codes universally achieve capacity over the class of binary memoryless symmetric (BMS) channels under belief-propagation decoding. Recently, potential functions have been used…
Spatially coupled codes have been of interest recently owing to their superior performance over memoryless binary-input channels. The performance is good both asymptotically, since the belief propagation thresholds approach capacity, as well as for finite lengths, since degree-2 variables that result in high error floors can be completely avoided. However, to realize the promised good performance, one needs large blocklengths. This in turn implies a large latency and decoding complexity. For the memoryless binary erasure channel, we consider the decoding of spatially coupled codes through a wi…
We propose a novel encoding/transmission scheme called continuous chain (CC) transmission that is able to improve the finite-length performance of a system using spatially-coupled low-density parity-check (SC-LDPC) codes. In CC transmission, instead of transmitting a sequence of independent codewords from a terminated SC-LDPC code chain, we connect multiple chains in a layered format, where encoding, transmission, and decoding are now performed in a continuous fashion. The connections between chains are created at specific points, chosen to improve the finite-length performance of the code str…
In this paper we propose the construction of Spatially Coupled Low-Density Parity-Check (SC-LDPC) codes using a periodic time-variant Quasi-Cyclic (QC) algorithm. The QC based approach is optimized to obtain memory efficiency in storing the parity-check matrix in the decoders. A hardware model of the parity-check storage units has been designed for Xilinx FPGA to compare the logic and memory requirements for various approaches. It is shown that the proposed QC SC-LDPC code (with optimization) can be stored with reasonable logic resources and without the need of block memory in the FPGA. In add…
We analyze the asymptotic performance of nonbinary spatially-coupled low-density parity-check (SC-LDPC) codes built on the general linear group, when the transmission takes place over the binary erasure channel. We propose an efficient method to derive an upper bound to the maximum a posteriori probability (MAP) threshold for nonbinary LDPC codes, and observe that the MAP performance of regular LDPC codes improves with the alphabet size. We then consider nonbinary SC-LDPC codes. We show that the same threshold saturation effect experienced by binary SC-LDPC codes occurs for the nonbinary codes…
We consider the design and analysis of coding schemes for the binary input two way relay channel with erasure noise. We are particularly interested in reliable physical layer network coding in which the relay performs perfect error correction prior to forwarding messages. The best known achievable rates for this problem can be achieved through either decode and forward or compute and forward relaying. We consider a decoding paradigm called joint compute and forward which we numerically show can achieve the best of these rates with a single encoder and decoder. This is accomplished by deriving …
In this paper, we introduce the concept of spatially coupled turbo codes (SC-TCs), as the turbo codes counterpart of spatially coupled low-density parity-check codes. We describe spatial coupling for both Berrou et al. and Benedetto et al. parallel and serially concatenated codes. For the binary erasure channel, we derive the exact density evolution (DE) equations of SC-TCs by using the method proposed by Kurkoski et al. to compute the decoding erasure probability of convolutional encoders. Using DE, we then analyze the asymptotic behavior of SC-TCs. We observe that the belief propagation (BP)…
A novel code construction based on spatially coupled low-density parity-check (SC-LDPC) codes is presented. The proposed code ensembles are described by protographs, comprised of several protograph-based chains characterizing individual SC-LDPC codes. We demonstrate that code ensembles obtained by connecting appropriately chosen SC-LDPC code chains at specific points have improved iterative decoding thresholds compared to those of single SC-LDPC coupled chains. In addition, it is shown that the improved decoding properties of the connected ensembles result in reduced decoding complexity requir…
We study a new encoding scheme for lossy source compression based on spatially coupled low-density generator-matrix codes. We develop a belief-propagation guided-decimation algorithm, and show that this algorithm allows to approach the optimal distortion of spatially coupled ensembles. Moreover, using the survey propagation formalism, we also observe that the optimal distortions of the spatially coupled and individual code ensembles are the same. Since regular low-density generator-matrix codes are known to achieve the Shannon rate-distortion bound under optimal encoding as the degrees grow, o…
For finite coupling lengths, terminated spatially coupled low-density parity-check (SC-LDPC) codes show a non-negligible rate-loss. In this paper, we investigate if this rate loss can be mitigated by tail-biting SC-LDPC codes in conjunction with iterative demapping of higher order modulation formats. Therefore, we examine the BP threshold of different coupled and uncoupled ensembles. A comparison between the decoding thresholds approximated by EXIT charts and the density evolution results of the coupled and uncoupled ensemble is given. We investigate the effect and potential of different label…
We present a decode-and-forward transmission scheme based on spatially-coupled low-density parity-check (SC-LDPC) codes for a network consisting of two (possibly correlated) sources, one relay, and one destination. The links between the nodes are modeled as binary erasure channels. Joint source-channel coding with joint channel decoding is used to exploit the correlation. The relay performs network coding. We derive analytical bounds on the achievable rates for the binary erasure time-division multiple-access relay channel with correlated sources. We then design bilayer SC-LDPC codes and analy…
Spatially-Coupled LDPC (SC-LDPC) ensembles achieve the capacity of binary memoryless channels (BMS), asymptotically, under belief-propagation (BP) decoding. In this paper, we study the BP decoding of these code ensembles over a BMS channel and in the presence of a single random burst of erasures. We show that in the limit of code length, codewords can be recovered successfully if the length of the burst is smaller than some maximum recoverable burst length. We observe that the maximum recoverable burst length is practically the same if the transmission takes place over binary erasure channel o…
