A precise measurement of the heavy-flavor production cross-sections in pp collisions is an essential baseline for the heavy-ion program. In addition it is a crucial test of pQCD models in the new energy regime at LHC. ALICE measures the muons from the decay of charmonium resonances and from the semileptonic decay of heavy-flavored hadrons in its forward (-4.0 $<$ $η$ $<$ -2.5) Muon Spectrometer. We discuss the status of the detector and present results of data taken in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=7 TeV.
The ALICE experiment is dedicated to the study of the quark gluon plasma in heavy-ion collisions at the CERN LHC. The Muon Forward Tracker (MFT) is under consideration by the ALICE experiment to be part of its program of detectors upgrade to be installed during the LHC Long Shutdown 2 (LS2) planned for 2018. Designed as a silicon pixel detector added in the Muon Spectrometer acceptance ($-4.0 < η< -2.5$) upstream of the hadron absorber, the MFT will allow a drastic improvement of the measurements that are presently done with the Muon Spectrometer and, in addition, will give access to new measu…
The ALICE experiment measured the heavy-flavour production in the semi-muonic decay channel at forward rapidities ($2.5<y<4$) in pp and Pb--Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 2.76$ TeV. We report on the first results on the $p_{\rm T}$-differential cross-sections in pp collisions as well as on the nuclear modification factors as a function of the transverse momentum and centrality.
The production of muons from heavy flavour decays is measured at forward rapidity (2.5 < y < 4) with the muon spectrometer of the ALICE experiment at the LHC. In pp collisions at \sqrt{s} = 7 TeV, the measurement of the transverse momentum and rapidity differential production cross section of muons from heavy flavour decays is carried out from a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of Lint = 16.5 nb^-1 and results are compared to predictions based on perturbative QCD calculations. In Pb-Pb collisions at \sqrt{s_{NN}}= 2.76 TeV, the analysis of a data sample corresponding to an…
ALICE is the experiment dedicated to the study of the quark gluon plasma in heavy-ion collisions at the CERN LHC. Improvements of ALICE sub-detectors are envisaged for the upgrade plans of year 2017. The Muon Forward Tracker (MFT) is a proposal in view of this upgrade, motivated both by the possibility to overcome the intrinsic limitations of the Muon Spectrometer, and by the possibility to perform new measurements of general interest for the whole ALICE physics. The measurement of the offset of single muons and dimuons will permit to disentangle open charm ($cτ\sim 150 μ$m) and beauty ($cτ\si…
Charmonium states are considered important signatures of the strongly interacting medium created in heavy-ion collisions. In the ALICE experiment, these probes can be investigated in the mu^+mu^- decay channel, in the forward rapidity region (2.5<y<4) down to zero transverse momentum. Results on charmonia production in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=2.76 TeV are presented. The centrality and transverse momentum dependence of the inclusive J/Psi nuclear modification factor are shown and compared with theoretical models. Finally, first ALICE results on the Psi(2S) production in Pb-Pb collisions …
Angular correlations of two and more particles are a sensitive probe of the initial state and the transport properties of the system produced in heavy-ion collisions. Two recent results of the ALICE collaboration are presented. Event-shape engineering, a novel method, is applied to Pb-Pb collisions which splits events within the same centrality interval into classes with different average flow. The results indicate an interplay between radial and elliptic flow likely related to the initial-state eccentricity. In pp and p-Pb collisions, recent results revealed intriguing long-range correlation …
The ALICE experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN consists of a central barrel, a muon spectrometer and additional detectors for trigger and event classification purposes. The low transverse momentum threshold of the central barrel gives ALICE a unique opportunity to study the low mass sector of central exclusive production at the LHC.
W bosons are produced in hard scattering processes of partons in collisions of hadrons and they do not interact strongly with the medium produced in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. Therefore, in p-Pb collisions the measurement of W-boson yields represents a standard candle to check the validity of binary-collision scaling and can provide important constraints on the parton distribution functions, which can be modified in nuclei with respect to protons or neutrons. At the LHC, ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) is dedicated to the study of ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions, in which…
A new Cherenkov muon spectrometer using diversely sized C3F8 gas radiators and nonlinear threshold muon momentum levels was studied using Geant4 simulations. Despite its compact size (<1m3), the performance of the spectrometer was significantly improved over the earlier design (linear and uniform) in two aspects, (i) a stable momentum measurement resolution and (ii) a balanced expected Cherenkov photon yields in all radiators. In addition, CO2 gas radiators are replaced by heavier gas radiators, C3F8, and the sizes of radiators for high momentum levels (low gas pressure) are enlarged to increa…
Measurement of heavy-flavour production in small systems can be used to test the Quantum ChromoDynamic (QCD) models. In this manuscript, the production cross section of D mesons at midrapidity and open heavy-flavour decay muons (HFM) measured at forward rapidity in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 TeV, and open heavy-flavour decay electrons (HFE) measured at midrapidity in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with ALICE detector will be presented. The self-normalized yield of open heavy-flavour decay electrons and muons as a function of multiplicity in pp and p$-$Pb collisions will be presen…
Cosmic ray muons have been considered as a non-conventional radiation probe in various applications. To utilize cosmic ray muons in engineering applications, two important quantities, trajectory and momentum, must be known. The muon trajectories are easily reconstructed using two-fold detector arrays with a high spatial resolution. However, precise measurement of muon momentum is difficult to be achieved without deploying large and expensive spectrometers such as solenoid magnets. Here, we propose a new method to estimate muon momentum using multi-layer pressurized gas Cherenkov radiators. Thi…

Results of the measured $R_{\rm AA}$ at both energies are shown and are compared to the different model predictions.
ALICE is one of four large experiments at the CERN Large Hadron Collider near Geneva, specially designed to study particle production in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Located 52 meters underground with 28 meters of overburden rock, it has also been used to detect muons produced by cosmic ray interactions in the upper atmosphere. In this paper, we present the multiplicity distribution of these atmospheric muons and its comparison with Monte Carlo simulations. This analysis exploits the large size and excellent tracking capability of the ALICE Time Projection Chamber. A special emphas…
ALICE is the experiment at the CERN LHC devoted to study heavy-ion collisions. An upgrade program of the ALICE detector is ongoing toward the LHC Run 3 starting in 2022 together with the upgrade of the data acquisition system and the detector control system (DCS). One of the main projects of the current ALICE upgrade program is the addition of the muon forward tracker (MFT), a new silicon pixel detector located at forward rapidity. In this paper, we describe the DCS of the MFT detector which is entirely controlled via a finite state machine in a hierarchical system.
In this work, we propose a new approach to cosmic ray muon momentum measurement using multiple pressurized gaseous Cherenkov radiators. Knowledge of cosmic ray muon momentum has the potential to significantly improve and expand the use of a variety of recently developed muon-based radiographic techniques. However, existing muon tomography systems rely only on muon tracking and have no momentum measurement capabilities which reduces the image resolution and requires longer measurement times. A fieldable cosmic ray muon spectrometer with momentum measurement capabilities for use in muon scatteri…
The ALICE experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN consists of a central barrel, a muon spectrometer and of additional detectors for trigger and event classification purposes. The low transverse momentum threshold of the central barrel gives ALICE a unique opportunity to study the low mass sector of central production at the LHC. First analysis results of meson production in double gap events in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV and in PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV are presented.
The forward muon spectrometer of ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) is equipped with a trigger system made of four planes of Resistive Plate Chambers (RPC), arranged in two stations with two planes each, for a total area of about 140 m2 . The system provides single and di-muon triggers with suitable transverse momentum selection, optimised for the physics of quarkonia and open heavy flavour. In the first two years of data-taking at the Large Hadron Collider (2010 and 2011) the 72 RPCs were operated in highly saturated avalanche mode in both pp and Pb-Pb collisions. The integrated charge w…
In both particle physics and cosmic ray muon applications, a high-resolution muon momentum measurement capability plays a significant role not only in providing valuable information on the properties of subatomic particles but also in improving the utilizability of muons. Currently, muon momentum is estimated by reconstructing the muon path using a strong magnetic field and muon trackers. Alternatively, time-of-flight or multiple Coulomb scattering techniques are less frequently applied, especially when there is a need to avoid using a magnetic field. However, the measurement resolution is muc…
ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) is designed and optimized to study ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions at the LHC, in which a hot and dense, strongly-interacting medium is created. Vector bosons (W and Z) are produced in hard scattering processes and interact weakly with the medium formed in heavy-ion collisions. Thus, they present a suitable reference for processes which are heavily affected by the medium. In proton-nucleus collisions their production can be used to study the modification of parton distribution functions in the nucleus and to test the validity of binary-collision …
In this contribution, recent ALICE measurements of the production cross section of single electrons, single muons and open charmed mesons in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV are reported. The data are compared to next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculations. First open charm signals in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt(sNN) = 2.76 TeV are shown.
The measurement of heavy-flavour production and nuclear modification factor in heavy-ion collisions provides insights into the mechanisms of parton energy loss in the hot and dense medium formed in these collisions. ALICE results on heavy-flavour decay electrons and muons and on D mesons are presented.
ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) is designed and optimized to study ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions, in which a hot and dense strongly-interacting medium is created. W bosons are produced in hard scattering processes occurring at the early stage of the collision and, since they are not affected by the strong interaction, they can be used as a benchmark for medium-induced effects. In proton-nucleus collisions the production of W bosons can be used to study the modification of parton distribution functions in the nucleus and to test the validity of binary collision scaling. The la…
The discovery of correlations between particles separated by several units of pseudorapidity in high-multiplicity pp and p-Pb collisions, reminiscent of structures observed in Pb-Pb collisions, was a challenge to traditional ideas about collectivity in heavy ion collisions. In order to further explore long-range correlations and provide information to theoretical models, correlations between forward trigger muons and mid-rapidity associated hadrons were measured in p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mbox{NN}}} = 5.02~\mbox{TeV}$. The results demonstrate that the nearside and awayside ridges extend …
Muons from the decay of charmonium resonances are detected in the ALICE Experiment at the Large Hadron Collider(LHC) for pp and Pb-Pb collisions with a muon spectrometer, covering the forward rapidity region 2.5$<$ $y$ $<$4.0. Analysis of the nuclear modification factor ($R_{\rm AA}$) at forward rapidity are presented and compared with mid-rapidity results from electrons in the central barrel covering $|y|<$0.9. The roles of suppression and regeneration mechanisms are discussed, as well as the importance of the results of the forthcoming p-Pb data taking for the estimate of cold nuclear matter…
We give a brief review of the physics of gluon saturation and non-linear QCD evolution at small values of the Bjorken-$x$ variable. We discuss the ALICE capability for low-$x$ studies at the LHC. In particular, we concentrate on the heavy quark production in the CGC framework and its observation with the ALICE Muon Spectrometer.
The ALICE experiment at the LHC was taking data in proton-proton collisions at the center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV starting from March till the end of October 2010. First heavy-ion collisions were delivered during November 2010. Among other particles, charmed and beauty mesons can be reconstructed by the ALICE apparatus. Open heavy flavour mesons provide a powerful tool to study hot quark matter produced in high energy heavy-ion collisions because their spectra are expected to be affected by energy loss in the medium. Measuring such particles is important also in proton-proton collisions. In th…
The study of formation of heavy quarkonia in relativistic heavy ion collisions provides important insight into the properties of the produced high density QCD medium. Lattice QCD studies show sequential suppression of quarkonia states with increasing temperature; which affirms that a full spectroscopy, can provide us a thermometer for the matter produced under extreme conditions in relativistic heavy ion collisions and one of the most direct probes of de-confinement. Muons from the decay of charmonium resonances are detected in ALICE Experiment in p+p and Pb+Pb collisions with a muon spectrome…
The production of open heavy-flavour particles was studied in p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}=5.02$ TeV using the ALICE detector. Three separate observables were used: the hadronic decays of D mesons at mid-rapidity, and semileptonic decays of heavy-flavour hadrons to electrons and muons at mid-rapidity and forward rapidity, respectively. The most recent ALICE measurements of the nuclear modification factor, $R_\mathrm{pPb}$, of open charm and beauty are reported, along with the centrality and multiplicity dependence of D-meson production in p-Pb collisions.
The ALICE experiment has measured charm and beauty production in pp and Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt(s) = 2.76 and 7 TeV and sqrt(sNN) = 2.76 TeV, respectively, via the exclusive reconstruction of hadronic D meson decays and semi-leptonic D and B meson decays. In this contribution, recent results on the nuclear modification factor for open charmed mesons and heavy-flavour decay electrons at central rapidity and muons at forward rapidity are presented and discussed.
We report the recent measurements of the inclusive J/ψ production in pp collisions at \sqrt{s} = 2.76 TeV, in pp collisions at \sqrt{s} = 7 TeV and in Pb-Pb collisions at \sqrt{s_{NN}} = 2.76 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The J/ψ mesons are detected down to pT = 0 GeV/c via their di-muon decay channel at forward rapidity (2.5 < y < 4) and via their di-electron decay channel at mid-rapidity (|y| < 0.9). A special emphasis is put on the nuclear modification factor which is compared to the predictions of current J/ψ production models.
Heavy quarks are produced in the early stages of ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions, and their number is preserved throughout the subsequent evolution of the system. Therefore, they constitute ideal probes for characterising the Quark--Gluon Plasma (QGP) medium and for the study of its transport properties. In particular, heavy quarks interact with the partonic constituents of the plasma, losing energy, and are expected to be sensitive to the medium collective motion induced by its hydrodynamical evolution. In pp collisions, the measurement of heavy-flavour hadron production provides a re…
The ALICE Collaboration has studied inclusive J/$ψ$ and $ψ$(2S) production in p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 5.02$ TeV with the Muon Spectrometer. The measurement was performed at forward (2.03 $<$ $y_{\rm cms}$ $<$ 3.53) and backward ($-$4.46 $<$ $y_{\rm cms}$ $<$ $-$2.96) centre of mass rapidities. The nuclear modification factor of J/$ψ$ and $ψ$(2S) has been measured as a function of transverse momentum and event activity. Theoretical models based on nuclear shadowing, coherent energy loss or both are in reasonable agreement with the J/$ψ$ results but cannot describe the $ψ$(2S) be…
Measurements of electroweak-bosons in heavy-ion collisions with ALICE are reported. They are measured at large rapidities, via their (di)muonic decay: Z $\rightarrow μ^+ μ^-$ and W$^\pm \rightarrow μ^\pm ν$. The Z production and nuclear modification factor in Pb--Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV are presented and compared to theoretical predictions with or without nuclear modifications of the Parton Distribution Functions. Measurements of electroweak-boson production in p--Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}}$ = 5.02 and 8.16 TeV are also presented and discussed.
We present the results of measurements of two-particle angular correlations between trigger particles reconstructed in the ALICE Forward Muon Spectrometer ($-4.0 < η< -2.5$) and associated particles reconstructed in the central barrel detectors ($|η| < 1.0$) in p--Pb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV. At low transverse momentum ($p_{\mathrm{T}}$), the reconstructed trigger particles mainly originate from weak decays of primary pions and kaons, whereas at high $p_{\mathrm{T}}$, they originate mainly from the decay of heavy-flavor particles. The ridge structure el…
The ALICE experiment at LHC studies the strong interaction sector of the Standard Model with pp, pA and AA collisions. Within the scope of the physics program, measurements of photons, neutral mesons and jets in ALICE are performed by two electromagnetic calorimeters. Precise and high-granularity photon spectrometer (PHOS) composed of lead-tungstate crystals, along with a wide-aperture lead-scintillator sampling calorimeter (EMCal) provide complementary measurements of photon observables in a wide kinematic range. The calorimeter trigger system allows the experiment to utilize efficiently the …
Charm and beauty production are probed with the ALICE experiment at the LHC by studying the single lepton transverse momentum distribution (electrons at mid-rapidity, muons at large-rapidities) and D mesons reconstructed in their hadronic decays. The differential production cross sections in proton proton interactions show a good agreement with perturbative QCD calculations at both sqrt(s) = 2.76 and 7 TeV. The measurements in lead lead reactions at sqrt(s_{NN})= 2.76 TeV evidence a reduction (or suppression) of the production rate at intermediate and high pt in the most central collisions wit…
Latest results on open heavy favour measurements in pp collisions at 7 TeV and Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 2.76 TeV with the ALICE experiment are presented. The results of the single lepton analyses (electrons at central rapidity, muons at forward rapidity) and D meson reconstruction will be discussed.
The strong electromagnetic fields surrounding the Pb-ions accelerated at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) allow two-photon and photonuclear interactions to be studied in a so far unexplored kinematic regime. Exclusive photoproduction of vector mesons can be studied in ultra-peripheral collisions, where the impact parameters are larger than the sum of the nuclear radii and hadronic interactions are strongly suppressed. During the heavy-ion runs at the LHC in 2010 and 2011, the ALICE collaboration used special triggers to select ultra-peripheral collisions. These triggers were based on the M…
Heavy flavour is mainly produced during the initial hard partonic interactions in a heavy ion collision, and is well-suited to probe the early phases of the evolution of the system. This contribution will focus on Pb--Pb analyses at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 2.76 TeV, with some hints at the $\pp$ data at 7 and 2.76 TeV. Results of open heavy flavour analyses will be shown for various decay channels, including electrons, muons, and hadronic charm decays, together with results obtained for heavy quarkonia at both central and forward rapidities.
J/psi suppression induced by color screening of its constituent quarks was proposed 26 years ago as a signature of the formation of a quark gluon plasma in heavy-ion collisions. Recent results from ALICE in Pb-Pb collisions exhibit a smaller suppression with respect to previous measurements at the SPS and RHIC. The study of azimuthal anisotropy in particle production gives information on the collective hydrodynamic expansion at the early stage of the fireball, where the matter created in high-energy nuclear collisions is expected to be in a deconfined state. In particular, J/psi elliptic flow …
In this new energy regime, quarkonium provides a unique probe to study the properties of the high-density, strongly interacting system formed in the early stages of high-energy heavy-ion collisions. In ALICE, quarkonium states are reconstructed down to p_T=0 via their mu+mu- decay channel in the muon spectrometer (2.5<y<4.0) and via their e+e- channel in the central barrel (|y|<0.9). Measurement of the transverse momentum and rapidity distributions of inclusive J/psi production cross section in proton-proton collisions at sqrt{s}=2.76 and 7 TeV will be presented. We will discuss the dependence…
Hadrons containing heavy quarks, i.e. charm or beauty, are unique probes of the properties of the hot and dense QCD medium produced in heavy-ion collisions. Due to their large masses, heavy quarks are produced at the initial stage of the collision, almost exclusively via hard partonic scattering processes. Therefore, they are expected to experience the full collision history propagating through the QCD medium losing energy via elastic and inelastic collisions with the medium constituents. The ALICE collaboration has measured the production of open heavy-flavour hadrons via their hadronic and s…
Electroweak bosons are sensitive probes of the initial state of heavy-ion collisions, of which a precise knowledge is required in order to disentangle initial state effects from phenomena induced by the presence of the quark--gluon plasma (QGP). The production rate of the Z and W$^\pm$ bosons is especially sensitive to the nuclear modification of the Parton Distribution Functions (PDF), and the muonic decays (Z $\rightarrow μ^+μ^-$ and W$^\pm \rightarrow μ^\pm ν$) offer medium-blind processes carrying this information to the detector where it can be directly collected. In this contribution, ne…
We present the elliptic flow of inclusive J/$ψ$ measured in the $μ^{+}μ^{-}$ channel at forward rapidity ($2.5<y<4.0$), down to zero transverse momentum, in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\mathrm{NN}}}}=2.76$ TeV with the ALICE muon spectrometer. The $p_{\mathrm T}$ dependence of J/$ψ$ $v_2$ in non-central (20%-60%) Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\mathrm{NN}}}}=2.76$ TeV is compared with existing measurements at RHIC and theoretical calculations. The centrality dependence of the $p_{\mathrm{T}}$-integrated elliptic flow, as well as the $p_{\mathrm{T}}$ dependence in several finer centrality …
Heavy quarks, i.e. charm and beauty, are sensitive probes of the medium produced in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. They are produced in the early stage of the collisions and are expected to experience the whole collision evolution interacting with the medium constituents via both elastic and inelastic processes. The nuclear modification factor ($R_{\rm AA}$) and the elliptic flow ($v_{2}$) are two of the main experimental observables that allow us to investigate the interaction strength of heavy quarks with the medium. The ALICE collaboration measured the production and elliptic flow of ope…
Heavy-flavour production measurements in pp collisions are important tools to test theoretical models based on perturbative quantum chromodymanics (pQCD) and to investigate the heavy-quark hadronization mechanisms. In ALICE, heavy quarks are measured via the hadronic and electronic decay channels at central rapidity (-0.9 $<$ $\textit{y}$ $<$ 0.9) and via the muon decay channels at forward rapidity (-4 $<$ $\textit{y}$ $<$ -2.5). In this contribution, the production cross-section measurements via the leptonic decay of heavy-flavour hadrons are presented and compared to pQCD theoretical calcula…

Open charmed hadrons are kinematically fully reconstructed in the hadronic decay channels \DtoKpi, \DtoKpipi, and \DstartoDpi %$D^0\rightarrow K^-π^+$, $D^+\rightarrow K^-π^+ π^+$, and $D^{*+} \rightarrow D^0 (K^-π^+) + π^+$ and identified through their invariant mass. Combinatorial background is minimized by selecting a displaced vertex topology. Inclusive charm a…

The pT-differential production cross section in pp collisions, the elliptic flow in Pb-Pb collisions, and the nuclear modification factor in Pb-Pb and p-Pb collisions are shown. The results are compared to theoretical predictions.
