We analyze the possibility of detection of cosmological relic neutrinos via neutrino capture on beta decaying nuclei. This reaction has no threshold in neutrino energy, which is crucial for searching for relic neutrinos possessing very low energies. We focus on tritium (3H) and rhenium (187Re) beta radioactive isotopes to be used in KATRIN and MARE experiments dedicated to measurement of the electron neutrino mass at sub-eV scale. We examine these experiments from the viewpoint of searching for the cosmological neutrinos via neutrino capture. We conclude that even with possible gravitational clustering of relic neutrinos the prospects for their detection in these and other similar experiments are not optimistic. Nevertheless KATRIN and MARE experiments could establish some usefull constraints on density of relic neutrinos.
The mechanism of beta decay in nature is not understood yet. Mirrored energy spectra of electron and antineutrino can clarify the situation. A special experiment is needed to measure antineutrino spectrum from known beta-decaying isotope to compare it with the beta one. One of ongoing experiments with large volume detector can be chosen to make the experiment. Another possibility is to make a special experiment close to a powerful source of mixture of known beta-decaying isotopes. If sufficient differences in shape will be observed the method of antineutrino spectrum calculation should be revi…
We point out that the Pauli blocking of neutrinos by cosmological relic neutrinos can be a significant effect. For zero-energy neutrinos, the standard parameters for the neutrino background temperature and density give a suppression of approximately 1/2. We show the effect this has on three-body beta decays. The size of the effect is of the same order as the recently suggested neutrino capture on beta-decaying nuclei.
We investigate neutrino flux induced double beta transitions in targets built of Cd112, Cd114, Cd116 and O18 isotopes. In addition to known beta^- beta^- channel we consider new beta^- beta^+ and beta^- beta^+ gamma modes of the neutrino induced double beta process. A possibility of detection of the solar neutrinos via the induced double beta transitions of interest is discussed. We note that the beta^- part of the solar neutrino induced beta^- beta^+ process in O18 was already discussed in Ref. [9,10] in connection with a possible influence of high energy electron production of this origin on…
We study the interaction of low energy neutrinos on nuclei that spontaneously undergo beta decay showing that the product of the cross section times neutrino velocity takes values as high as 10^{-42} cm^2 c for some specific nuclei that decay via allowed transitions. The absence of energy threshold and the value of the cross section single out these processes as a promising though very demanding approach for future experiments aimed at a direct detection of low energy neutrino backgrounds such as the cosmological relic neutrinos.
We examine the pion realization of the short ranged supersymmetric (SUSY) mechanism of neutrinoless double beta decay. It originates from the R-parity violating quark-lepton interactions of the SUSY extensions of the standard model of the electroweak interactions. We argue that pions are dominant SUSY mediators in neutrinoless double beta decay. The corresponding nuclear matrix elements for various isotopes are calculated within the proton-neutron renormalized quasiparticle random phase approximation. We define those isotopes which are most sensitive to the SUSY signal and outlook the present …
We investigate the possibility to discriminate between different pairs of CP non-conserving mechanisms inducing the neutrinoless double beta $\betabeta$-decay by using data on $\betabeta$-decay half-lives of nuclei with largely different nuclear matrix elements (NMEs). The mechanisms studied are: light Majorana neutrino exchange, heavy left-handed (LH) and heavy right-handed (RH) Majorana neutrino exchanges, lepton charge non-conserving couplings in SUSY theories with R-parity breaking giving rise to the "dominant gluino exchange" and the "squark-neutrino" mechanisms. The nuclei considered are…
There exists an observed "desert" spanning six orders of magnitude between O(0.5) eV and O(0.5) MeV in the fermion mass spectrum. We argue that it might accommodate one or more keV sterile neutrinos as a natural candidate for warm dark matter. To illustrate this point of view, we simply assume that there is one keV sterile neutrino nu_4 and its flavor eigenstate nu_s weakly mixes with three active neutrinos. We clarify different active-sterile neutrino mixing factors for the radiative decay of nu_4 and beta decays in a self-consistent parametrization. A direct detection of this keV sterile neu…
In this paper we present a study of the interaction of low energy electron antineutrino on nuclei that undergo electron capture. We show that the two corresponding crossed reactions have a sizeable cross section and are both suitable for detection of low energy antineutrino. However, only in case very specific conditions on the Q-value of the decay are met or significant improvements on the performances of ion storage rings are achieved, these reactions could be exploited in the future to address the long standing problem of a direct detection of Cosmological Neutrino Background.
The theoretical evaluation of major nuclear structure effects on the asymmetry of allowed Gamow-Teller beta-decay rates in light mirror nuclei is presented. The calculations are performed within the shell model, using empirical isospin-nonconserving interaction and realistic Woods-Saxon radial wave functions. The revised treatment of p-shell nuclei is supplemented by systematic calculations for sd-shell nuclei and compared to experimental asymmetries when available. The results are important in connection with the possible existence of second-class currents in the weak interaction.
Antineutrino induced electron capture is a resonant process that can have a larg e cross-section for beams of monochromatic antineutrinos. We calculate the cross-section of this process and investigate an experimental setup where monochromatic antineutrinos are produced from the bound-beta decay of fully ionized radioactive atoms in a storage ring. If the energy between the source and the target is well matched, the cross-sections can be significantly larger than the cross-sections of commonly used non-resonant processes. The rate that can be achieved at a small distance between the source and…
The electron capture decay of the isotope 163-Ho has been proposed since a long time as a candidate for measuring the electron neutrino mass and recently the interest on this idea has been renewed. In this paper we note that a direct observation of the cosmic antineutrino background could be made using a target made of this isotope. We further discuss the requests for an experiment aiming to obtain this result.
The modern theories of Grand Unification (GUT) and supersymmetric (SUSY) extensions of standard model (SM) suppose that the conservation laws of the SM may be violated to some small degree. The nuclei are well-suited as a laboratory to test fundamental symmetries and fundamental interactions like lepton flavor (LF) and lepton number (LN) conservation. A prominent role between experiments looking for LF and total LN violation play yet not observed processes of neutrinoless double beta decay. The GUT's and SUSY models offer a variety of mechanisms which allow this process to occur. They are base…
The neutrinoless double beta decay is analyzed using a general Lorentz invariant effective Lagrangian for various decaying nuclei of current experimental interest: $^{76}$Ge, $^{82}$Se, $^{100}$Mo, $^{130}$Te, and $^{136}$Xe. We work out the half-lives and angular correlation coefficients of the outgoing electrons in several scenarios for new physics: the left-right symmetric models, the R-parity-violating SUSY and models with leptoquarks. The theoretical uncertainty in the nuclear matrix elements is discussed.
We present the first ab initio calculations of neutrinoless double beta decay matrix elements in $A=6$-$12$ nuclei using Variational Monte Carlo wave functions obtained from the Argonne $v_{18}$ two-nucleon potential and Illinois-7 three-nucleon interaction. We study both light Majorana neutrino exchange and potentials arising from a large class of multi-TeV mechanisms of lepton number violation. Our results provide benchmarks to be used in testing many-body methods that can be extended to the heavy nuclei of experimental interest. In light nuclei we have also studied the impact of two-body sh…
We show that chiral effective field theory (EFT) two-body currents provide important contributions to the quenching of low-momentum-transfer Gamow-Teller transitions, and use chiral EFT to predict the momentum-transfer dependence that is probed in neutrinoless double-beta decay. We then calculate for the first time the neutrinoless double-beta decay operator based on chiral EFT currents and study the nuclear matrix elements at successive orders. The contributions from chiral two-body currents are significant and should be included in all calculations.
The neutrinoless double beta decay ($\znbb$) induced by light Majorana neutrino exchange between decaying nucleons, accompanied by the squark exchange inside one nucleon, recently discussed by Babu and Mohapatra, is carefully analyzed both from the particle and nuclear physics sides. New nuclear matrix elements relevant to this mechanism are calculated. We extend the analysis to include mixing of light neutrinos with heavy and "sterile" neutrinos. It introduces another supersymmetric (SUSY) contribution to $\znbb$. We discuss constraints on the \rp MSSM parameters imposed by the current experi…
A measurement of neutrinoless double beta decay in one isotope does not allow to determine the underlying physics mechanism. We discuss the discrimination of mechanisms for neutrinoless double beta decay by comparing ratios of half life measurements for different isotopes. Six prominent examples for specific new physics contributions to neutrinoless double beta decay are analyzed. We find that the change in corresponding ratios of half lives varies from 60% for supersymmetric models up to a factor of 5-20 for extra-dimensional and left-right-symmetric mechanisms.
We frame beta-minus decay rate perturbations in the context of charged-current (CC) nonstandard neutrino interactions (NSI). In particular, we first outline one NSI parameterization for modeling the CC NSI. Then, we demonstrate that the strength of the NSI constrained by beta-minus decay data is comparable to previously reported bounds on general CC NSI at $\mathcal{O}(10^{-4})$ to $\mathcal{O}(10^{-2})$. After discussing possible parameters involved in beta-minus decay NSI, we establish a working framework to probe potentially new physics in nuclear decay rates. Finally, we determine that cur…
Emission of bremsstrahlung photons accompanying proton decay of nuclei is studied. The new improved multipolar model describing such a process is presented. The angular formalism of calculations of the matrix elements is stated in details. The bremsstrahlung probabilities for the $^{157}{\rm Ta}$, $^{161}{\rm Re}$, $^{167}{\rm Ir}$ and $^{185}{\rm Bi}$ nuclei decaying from the $2s_{1/2}$ state, the $^{109}_{53}{\rm I}_{56}$ and $^{112}_{55}{\rm Cs}_{57}$ nuclei decaying from the $1d_{5/2}$ state, the $^{146}_{69}{\rm Tm}_{77}$ and $^{151}_{71}{\rm Lu}_{80}$ nuclei decaying from the $0h_{11/2}$…
Capturing low-energy electron antineutrinos on radioactive Ho-163 nuclei, which decay into Dy-163 via electron capture (EC), is a noteworthy opportunity to detect relic sterile antineutrinos. Such hypothetical particles are more or less implied by current experimental and cosmological data, and they might be a part of hot dark matter or a candidate for warm dark matter in the Universe. Using the isotope Ho-163 as a target and assuming reasonable active-sterile antineutrino mixing angles, we calculate the capture rate of relic electron antineutrinos against the corresponding EC-decay background…
The neutrinoless double $β$-decay of nuclei is reviewed. We discuss neutrino mixing and 3x3 PMNS neutrino mixing matrix. Basic theory of neutrinoless double $β$-decay is presented in some details. Results of different calculations of nuclear matrix element are discussed. Experimental situation is considered. The Appendix is dedicated to E. Majorana (brief biography and his paper in which the theory of Majorana particles is given)
Ultra High Cosmic Rays) made by He-like lightest nuclei might solve the AUGER extragalactic clustering along Cen A. Moreover He like UHECR nuclei cannot arrive from Virgo because the light nuclei fragility and opacity above a few Mpc, explaining the Virgo UHECR absence. UHECR signals are spreading along Cen-A as observed because horizontal galactic arms magnetic fields, bending them on vertical angles. Cen A events by He-like nuclei are deflected as much as the observed clustered ones; proton will be more collimated while heavy (iron) nuclei are too much dispersed. Such a light nuclei UHECR co…
The time evolution of a neutrino is dependent on its initial properties at creation including flavor, energy, and wavepacket size. There exists no solid theoretical prediction for the latter property in the context of nuclear beta decay, despite the importance of this process for the past, present, and future of neutrino experimentation. In this paper, we provide a quantitative prediction for the size of a beta-decay-induced electron antineutrino wavepacket by treating the parent nucleus decaying to an entangled antineutrino-recoil system using the formalism of open quantum systems. Of central…
Half-life estimates for neutrinoless double beta decay depend on particle physics models for lepton flavor violation, as well as on nuclear physics models for the structure and transitions of candidate nuclei. Different models considered in the literature can be contrasted - via prospective data - with a "standard" scenario characterized by light Majorana neutrino exchange and by the quasiparticle random phase approximation, for which the theoretical covariance matrix has been recently estimated. We show that, assuming future half-life data in four promising nuclei (Ge-76, Se-82, Te-130, and X…
Matter effects on the mixing of the neutrinos mass eigenstates, also know as the Mikheyev-Smirnov-Wolfenstein effect, seem to be well established in describing the propagation of the neutrino from the source to detecting devices. These effects were mostly considered in bulk matter, but not inside the atoms. Here we consider the effect of the high electron densities existing in the atomic nuclei. We investigate if these effects can affect the known neutrino phenomenology. It was reported that the mixing of the neutrino in high density matter, such as inside a supernova, can affect the Majoron d…
We evaluate the leading-order short-range nuclear matrix element for the neutrinoless double-beta ($0νββ$) decay of the nuclei most relevant for experiments, including $^{76}$Ge, $^{100}$Mo, $^{130}$Te and $^{136}$Xe. In our calculations, performed with the nuclear shell model and proton-neutron quasiparticle random-phase approximation (pnQRPA) methods, we estimate the coupling of this term by the contact charge-independence-breaking coupling of various nuclear Hamiltonians. Our results suggest a significant impact of the short-range matrix element, which is about $15\%-50\%$ and $30\%-80\%$ o…
Weak interaction in nuclei represents a well-known venue for testing many of the fundamental symmetries of the Standard Model. In particular, neutrinoless double-beta decay offers the possibility to test Beyond Standard Model theories predicting that neutrinos are Majorana fermions and the lepton number conservation is violated. This paper focuses on an effective field theory approach to neutrinoless double-beta decay for extracting information regarding the properties of the Beyond Standard Model Lagrangian responsible for this process. We use shell model nuclear matrix elements and the lates…
We study the two-neutrino double-beta decay in 76Ge, 116Cd, 128Te, 130Te, and 150Nd, as well as the two Gamow-Teller branches that connect the double-beta decay partners with the states in the intermediate nuclei. We use a theoretical microscopic approach based on a deformed selfconsistent mean field with Skyrme interactions including pairing and spin-isospin residual forces, which are treated in a proton-neutron quasiparticle random-phase approximation. We compare our results for Gamow-Teller strength distributions with experimental information obtained from charge-exchange reactions. We also…
Both active and sterile sub-eV neutrinos can form the cosmic neutrino background in the early Universe. We consider the beta-decaying (e.g., $^3$H) and EC-decaying (e.g., $^{163}$Ho) nuclei as the promising targets to capture relic neutrinos in the laboratory. We calculate the capture rates of relic electron neutrinos and antineutrinos against the corresponding beta decay or electron capture (EC) decay backgrounds in the (3+$N_{\rm s}$) flavor mixing scheme, and discuss the future prospect in terms of the PTOLEMY project. We stress that such direct measurements of hot DM might not be hopeless …
In a previous article [Phys. Rev. D 79, 053001 (2009)] we estimated the correlated uncertainties associated to the nuclear matrix elements (NME) of neutrinoless double beta decay (0 nu beta beta) within the quasiparticle random phase approximation (QRPA). Such estimates encompass recent independent calculations of NMEs, and can thus still provide a fair representation of the nuclear model uncertainties. In this context, we compare the claim of 0 nu beta beta decay in Ge-76 with recent negative results in Xe-136 and in other nuclei, and we infer the lifetime ranges allowed or excluded at 90% C.…
Superallowed $0^+ \to 0^+$ nuclear beta decay provides a direct measure of the weak vector coupling constant, $\GV$. We survey current world data on the nine accurately determined transitions of this type, which range from the decay of $^{10}$C to that of $^{54}$Co, and demonstrate that the results confirm conservation of the weak vector current (CVC) but differ at the 98% confidence level from the unitarity condition for the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix. We examine the reliability of the small calculated corrections that have been applied to the data, and conclude that there are no …
Both active and sterile sub-eV neutrinos can serve for hot dark matter (DM). On the other hand, keV sterile neutrinos could be a good candidate for warm DM. The beta-decaying (e.g., H-3 and Ru-106) and EC-decaying (e.g., Ho-163) nuclei are considered as the most promising targets to capture those extremely low energy neutrinos and antineutrinos, respectively. We calculate the capture rates of relic electron neutrinos and antineutrinos against the corresponding beta-decay or EC-decay backgrounds in different flavor mixing schemes. We stress that such direct laboratory measurements of hot or war…
Relic neutrinos from the early universe are predicted to have a relatively large number density, but extremely low energies. Hence, the only possible interaction proceeds via neutrino capture on beta-decaying nuclei. In case relic neutrinos are captured by beta-decaying nuclei in the Sun, the neutrinos normally emerging from the decay of these nuclei will be missing from the overall number of solar neutrinos registered in neutrino experiments. Within the Sun, ${}^8\mathrm{B}$ and three nuclei from the CNO cycle are found to be suitable for this kind of process. Their cross section as well as t…
We report ab initio benchmark calculations of nuclear matrix elements (NMEs) for neutrinoless double-beta ($0νββ$) decays in light nuclei with mass number ranging from $A=6$ to $A=22$. We use the transition operator derived from light-Majorana neutrino exchange and evaluate the NME with three different methods: two variants of in-medium similarity renormalization group (IMSRG) and importance-truncated no-core shell model (IT-NCSM). The same two-plus-three-nucleon interaction from chiral effective field theory is employed, and both isospin-conserving ($ΔT=0$) and isospin-changing ($ΔT=2$) trans…
We analyze if the nucleon structure of the $α$ decaying nucleus can be visible in the experimental bremsstrahlung spectra of the emitted photons which accompany such a decay. We develop a new formalism of the bremsstrahlung model taking into account distribution of nucleons in the $α$ decaying nuclear system. We conclude the following: (1) After inclusion of the nucleon structure into the model the calculated bremsstrahlung spectrum is changed very slowly for a majority of the $α$ decaying nuclei. However, we have observed that visible changes really exist for the $^{106}{\rm Te}$ nucleus ($Q_…
We compute the neutrino detection rates to be expected at a low-energy beta-beam facility. We consider various nuclei as neutrino detectors and compare the case of a small versus large storage ring.
We perform a global fit of the most relevant neutrinoless double beta decay experiments within the standard model with massive Majorana neutrinos. Using Bayesian inference makes it possible to take into account the theoretical uncertainties on the nuclear matrix elements in a fully consistent way. First, we analyze the data used to claim the observation of neutrinoless double beta decay in Ge-76, and find strong evidence (according to Jeffrey's scale) for a peak in the spectrum and moderate evidence for that the peak is actually close to the energy expected for the neutrinoless decay. We also …
Working with Hamiltonians from chiral effective field theory, we develop a novel framework for describing arbitrary deformed medium-mass nuclei by combining the in-medium similarity renormalization group with the generator coordinate method. The approach leverages the ability of the first method to capture dynamic correlations and the second to include collective correlations without violating symmetries. We use our scheme to compute the matrix element that governs the neutrinoless double beta decay of $^{48}$Ca to $^{48}$Ti, and find it to have the value $0.61$, near or below the predictions …
Accurate nuclear matrix elements (NMEs) for neutrinoless double beta decays of candidate nuclei are important for the design and interpretation of future experiments. Significant progress has been made in the modeling of these NMEs from first principles. The NME for 48Ca shows a good agreement among three different ab initio calculations starting from the same nuclear interaction constructed within the chiral EFT and the same decay operator. These studies open the door to ab initio calculations of the matrix elements for the decay of heavier nuclei such as 76Ge, 130Te, and 136Xe. The ultimate …
Theoretical estimates for the half life of neutrinoless double beta decay in candidate nuclei are affected by both particle and nuclear physics uncertainties, which may complicate the interpretation of decay signals or limits. We study such uncertainties and their degeneracies in the following context: three nuclei of great interest for large-scale experiments (76-Ge, 130-Te, 136-Xe), two representative particle physics mechanisms (light and heavy Majorana neutrino exchange), and a large set of nuclear matrix elements (NME), computed within the quasiparticle random phase approximation (QRPA). …
Neutrino physics is traversing an exciting period, after the important discovery that neutrinos are massive particles, that has implications from high-energy physics to cosmology. A new method for the production of intense and pure neutrino beams has been proposed recently: the ``beta-beam''. It exploits boosted radioactive ions decaying through beta-decay. This novel concept has been the starting point for a new possible future facility. Its main goal is to address the crucial issue of the existence of CP violation in the lepton sector. Here we review the status and the recent developments wi…
A novel method to produce neutrino beams has recently been proposed : the beta-beams. This method consists in using the beta-decay of boosted radioactive nuclei to obtain an intense, collimated and pure neutrino beam. Here we propose to exploit the beta-beam concept to produce neutrino beams of low energy. We discuss the applications of such a facility as well as its importance for different domains of physics. We focus, in particular, on neutrino-nucleus interaction studies of interest for various open issues in astrophysics, nuclear and particle physics. We suggest possible sites for a low e…
