Primordial non-Gaussianity has emerged as one of the most promising probes of the inflationary epoch. While the cosmic microwave background and large-scale halo bias currently provide the most stringent constraints on the non-Gaussian parameter fNL, the abundance of dark matter halos is a complementary probe which may allow tests of Gaussianity which are independent of the precise form of non-Gaussian initial conditions. We study the halo mass function in N-body simulations with a range of non-Gaussian initial conditions. In addition to the usual fNL model, we consider gNL Phi^3-type non-Gaussianity and models where the 4-point amplitude tauNL is an independent parameter. We introduce a new analytic form for the halo mass function in the presence of primordial non-Gaussianity, the "log-Edgeworth" mass function, and find good agreement with the N-body simulations. The log-Edgeworth mass function introduces no free parameters and can be constructed from first principles for any model of primordial non-Gaussianity.
The scale-dependent galaxy bias generated by primordial non-Gaussianity (PNG) can be used to detect and constrain deviations from standard single-field inflation. The strongest signal is expected in the local model for PNG, where the amplitude of non-Gaussianity can be expressed by a set of parameters (fnl, gnl, ...). Current observational constraints from galaxy clustering on fnl and gnl assume that the others PNG parameters are vanishing. Using two sets of cosmological N-body simulations where both fnl and gnl are non-zero, we show that this strong assumption generally leads to biased estima…
Multi-field models of inflation predict an inequality between the amplitude tauNL of the collapsed limit of the four-point correlator of the primordial curvature perturbation and the amplitude fNL of the squeezed limit of its three-point correlator. While a convincing detection of non-Gaussianity through the squeezed limit of the three-point correlator would rule out all single-field models, a robust confirmation or disproval of the inequality between tauNL and fNL would provide crucial information about the validity of multi-field models of inflation. In this paper, we discuss to which extent…
We study the evolution of the non-linear curvature perturbation during perturbative reheating, and hence how observables evolve to their final values which we may compare against observations. Our study includes the evolution of the two trispectrum parameters, $\gnl$ and $\taunl$, as well as the scale dependence of both $\fnl$ and $\taunl$. In general the evolution is significant and must be taken into account, which means that models of multifield inflation cannot be compared to observations without specifying how the subsequent reheating takes place. If the trispectrum is large at the end of…
The primordial non-Gaussianity parameters fNL and tauNL may be scale-dependent. We investigate the capability of future measurements of the CMB mu-distortion, which is very sensitive to small scales, and of the large-scale halo bias to test the running of local non-Gaussianity. We show that, for an experiment such as PIXIE, a measurement of the mu-temperature correlation can pin down the spectral indices n_fNL and n_tauNL to values of the order of 0.3 if fNL = 20 and tauNL = 5000. A similar value can be achieved with an all-sky survey extending to redshift z ~ 1. In the particular case in whic…
In this paper we examine how primordial non-Gaussianity contributes to nonlinear perturbative orders in the expansion of the density field at large scales in the matter dominated era. General Relativity is an intrinsically nonlinear theory, establishing a nonlinear relation between the metric and the density field. Representing the metric perturbations with the curvature perturbation zeta, it is known that nonlinearity produces effective non-Gaussian terms in the nonlinear perturbations of the matter density field, even if the primordial zeta is Gaussian. Here we generalise these results to th…
The subject of this paper is the investigation of inflationary non-Gaussianities of the local type with extreme value statistics of the weak lensing convergence kappa. Specifically, we describe the influence of inflationary non-Gaussianities parameterised by fnl and gnl on the probability distribution p(kappa)dkappa of the smoothed convergence field with a Gram-Charlier series, for which we compute the cumulants kappa_n of the smoothed convergence field as a configuration space average of the weak convergence polyspectra. We derive analytical expressions for the extreme value distribution and …
We analytically derive a more accurate formula for the power spectrum of the biased objects with the primordial non-Gaussianity parameterized not only by the non-linearity parameter fNL, but also by gNL and tauNL which characterize the trispectrum of the primordial curvature perturbations. We adopt the integrated perturbation theory which was constructed in Matsubara (2011). We discuss an inequality between fNL and tauNL in the context of the scale-dependent bias, by introducing a stochasticity parameter. We also mention higher order loop corrections into the scale-dependency of the bias param…
Models of inflation in which non-Gaussianity is generated outside the horizon, such as curvaton models, generate distinctive higher-order correlation functions in the CMB and other cosmological observables. Testing for violation of the Suyama-Yamaguchi inequality tauNL >= (6/5 fNL)^2, where fNL and tauNL denote the amplitude of the three-point and four-point functions in certain limits, has been proposed as a way to distinguish qualitative classes of models. This inequality has been proved for a wide range of models, but only weaker versions have been proved in general. In this paper, we give …
We develop a needlet approach to estimate the amplitude of general (including non-separable) bispectra and trispectra in the cosmic microwave background, and apply this to the WMAP 9-year data. We obtain estimates for the `orthogonal' bispectrum mode, yielding results which are consistent with the WMAP 7-year data. We do not observe the frequency-dependence suggested by the WMAP team's analysis of the 9-year data. We present 1-$σ$ constraints on the `local' trispectrum shape $\gnl/10^5= -4.1\pm 2.3$, the `$c1$' equilateral model $\gnl^{c_1}/10^6= -0.8\pm 2.9$, and the constant model $\gnl^{\rm…
The new Planck constraints on the local bispectrum parameter fnl are about 10^5 times tighter than the current constraints on the trispectrum parameter gnl, which means that the allowed numerical values of the second and third order terms in the perturbative expansion of the curvature perturbation are comparable. We show that a consequence of this is that if gnl is large enough to be detectable, then it will induce a large variation between the observable value of fnl and its value in a larger inflated volume. Even if there were only a few extra efoldings between the beginning of inflation and…
We explore the effect of a cubic correction gnl*phi^3 on the mass function and bias of dark matter haloes extracted from a series of large N-body simulations and compare it to theoretical predictions. Such cubic terms can be motivated in scenarios like the curvaton model, in which a large cubic correction can be produced while simultaneously keeping the quadratic fnl*phi^2 correction small. The deviation from the Gaussian halo mass function is in reasonable agreement with the theoretical predictions. The scale-dependent bias correction Delta b_kappa(k,gnl) measured from the auto- and cross-pow…
The statistics of large-scale structure in the Universe can be used to probe non-Gaussianity of the primordial density field, complementary to existing constraints from the cosmic microwave background. In particular, the scale dependence of halo bias, which affects the halo distribution at large scales, represents a promising tool for analyzing primordial non-Gaussianity of local form. Future observations, for example, may be able to constrain the trispectrum parameter gNL that is difficult to study and constrain using the CMB alone. We investigate how galaxy and matter bispectra can distingui…
We discuss implications of Planck results for models with local type non-Gaussianity. In light of the recent results of the Planck satellite, we constrain model parameters of several representative models and give the prediction of trispectrum, in particular, gNL. We also consider interesting possibilities that trispectrum appears as the first signature of the non-Gaussianities of the curvature perturbations, that is, fNL is small while gNL can be significantly large.
We present a method to implement relativistic corrections to the evolution of dark matter structures in Newtonian simulations of a LCDM universe via the initial conditions. We take the nonlinear correspondence between the Lagrangian (Newtonian) evolution of dark matter inhomogeneities and the synchronous-comoving (relativistic) matter density description, and use it to promote the relativistic constraint as the initial condition for numerical simulations of structure formation. In this case, the incorporation of Primordial non-Gaussianity (PNG) contributions as initial conditions is straightfo…
Cosmic inflation provides a mechanism for generating the early density perturbations that seeded the large-scale structures we see today. Primordial non-Gaussianity is among the most promising of few observational tests of physics at this epoch. At present non-Gaussianity is best constrained by the cosmic microwave background, but in the near term large-scale structure data may be competitive so long as the effects of primordial non-Gaussianity can be modeled through the non-linear process of structure formation. We discuss recent work modeling effects of a few types of primordial non-Gaussian…
Since the first limit on the (local) primordial non-Gaussianity parameter, fNL, was obtained from COBE data in 2002, observations of the CMB have been playing a central role in constraining the amplitudes of various forms of non-Gaussianity in primordial fluctuations. The current 68% limit from the 7-year WMAP data is fNL=32+/-21, and the Planck satellite is expected to reduce the uncertainty by a factor of four in a few years from now. If fNL>>1 is found by Planck with high statistical significance, all single-field models of inflation would be ruled out. Moreover, if the Planck satellite fin…
We investigate how higher order non-linear parameters affect lower order ones through loop effects. We calculate the loop corrections up to two-loops and explicitly show that the tree contribution is stable against loop terms in most cases. We argue that, nevertheless, observational constraints on non-linear parameters such as fNL and tauNL can also give a limit even for higher order ones due to the loop contribution. We discuss these issues both for single-source and multi-source cases.
In a recent publication, we proposed that inflationary perturbation theory can be reformulated in terms of a probability transport equation, whose moments determine the correlation properties of the primordial curvature perturbation. In this paper we generalize this formulation to an arbitrary number of fields. We deduce ordinary differential equations for the evolution of the moments of zeta on superhorizon scales, which can be used to obtain an evolution equation for the dimensionless bispectrum, fNL. Our equations are covariant in field space and allow identification of the source terms res…
The evolution of the curvature perturbation is highly non-trivial for curvaton models with self-interactions and is very sensitive to the parameter values. The final perturbation depends also on the curvaton decay rate $Γ$. As a consequence, non-gaussianities can be greatly different from the purely quadratic case, even if the deviation is very small. Here we consider a class of polynomial curvaton potentials and discuss the dynamical behavior of the curvature perturbation. We point out that, for example, it is possible that the non-gaussianity parameter $\fnl\simeq 0$ while $\gnl$ is non-zero…
We know very little about primordial curvature perturbations on scales smaller than about a Mpc. Measurements of the mu-type distortion of the CMB spectrum provide the unique opportunity to probe these scales over the unexplored range from 50 to 10^4 Mpc^-1. This is a very clean probe, in that it relies only on well-understood linear evolution. We point out that correlations between mu-distortion and temperature anisotropies can be used to test Gaussianity at these very small scales. In particular the mu-T cross correlation is proportional to the very squeezed limit of the primordial bispectru…
We study the scale dependence of the non-linearity parameters f_NL and g_NL in curvaton models with self-interactions. We show that the spectral indices n_fNL=d ln|f_NL|/(d ln k) and n_gNL=d ln |g_NL|/(d ln k) can take values much greater than the slow--roll parameters and the spectral index of the power spectrum. This means that the scale--dependence of the bi and trispectrum could be easily observable in this scenario with Planck, which would lead to tight additional constraints on the model. Inspite of the highly non-trivial behaviour of f_NL and g_NL in the curvaton models with self-intera…
We characterise the primordial perturbations produced due to both inflaton and curvaton fluctuations in models where the curvaton has a quadratic, cosine or hyperbolic potential, and the inflaton potential is characterised by the usual slow-roll parameters. Isocurvature curvaton field perturbations can produce significant non-Gaussianity in the primordial density field, in contrast with adiabatic inflaton field perturbations which produce negligible non-Gaussianity for canonical scalar fields. A non-self-interacting curvaton with quadratic potential produces a local-type non-Gaussianity that i…
Local-type primordial non-Gaussianity couples statistics of the curvature perturbation ζon vastly different physical scales. Because of this coupling, statistics (i.e. the polyspectra) of ζin our Hubble volume may not be representative of those in the larger universe -- that is, they may be biased. The bias depends on the local background value of ζ, which includes contributions from all modes with wavelength k ~< H_0 and is therefore enhanced if the entire post-inflationary patch is large compared with our Hubble volume. We study the bias to locally-measured statistics for general local-type …
The Planck full mission cosmic microwave background(CMB) temperature and E-mode polarization maps are analysed to obtain constraints on primordial non-Gaussianity(NG). Using three classes of optimal bispectrum estimators - separable template-fitting (KSW), binned, and modal - we obtain consistent values for the local, equilateral, and orthogonal bispectrum amplitudes, quoting as our final result from temperature alone fNL^local=2.5+\-5.7, fNL^equil=-16+\-70 and fNL^ortho=-34+\-33(68%CL). Combining temperature and polarization data we obtain fNL^local=0.8+\-5.0, fNL^equil=-4+\-43 and fNL^ortho=…
We calculate the bispectrum, B_g(k_1,k_2,k_3), Fourier transform of the three-point function of density peaks (e.g., galaxies), using two different methods: the Matarrese-Lucchin-Bonometto formula and the locality of galaxy bias. The bispectrum of peaks is not only sensitive to that of the underlying matter density fluctuations, but also to the four-point function. For a physically-motivated, local form of primordial non-Gaussianity in the curvature perturbation, we show that the galaxy bispectrum contains five physically distinct pieces: (i) non-linear gravitational evolution, (ii) non-linear…
The Planck nominal mission cosmic microwave background (CMB) maps yield unprecedented constraints on primordial non-Gaussianity (NG). Using three optimal bispectrum estimators, separable template-fitting (KSW), binned, and modal, we obtain consistent values for the primordial local, equilateral, and orthogonal bispectrum amplitudes, quoting as our final result fNL^local= 2.7+/-5.8, fNL^equil= -42+/-75, and fNL^ortho= -25+\-39 (68% CL statistical). NG is detected in the data; using skew-C_l statistics we find a nonzero bispectrum from residual point sources, and the ISW-lensing bispectrum at a …
