A theory of dispersionless Andreev bound states on surfaces of time-reversal invariant unconventional superconductors is presented. The generalized criterion for the dispersionless Andreev bound state is derived from the bulk-edge correspondence, and the chiral spin structure of the dispersionless Andreev bound states is argued from which the Andreev bound state is stabilized. Then we summarize the criterion in a form of index theorems. The index theorems are proved in a general framework to certify the bulk-edge correspondence. As concrete examples, we discuss (i) dxy-wave superconductor (ii) px-wave superconductor, and (iii) noncentrosymmetric superconductors. In the last example, we find a peculiar time-reversal invariant Majorana fermion. The time-reversal invariant Majorana fermion shows an unusual response to the Zeeman magnetic field, which can be used to identify it experimentally.
Andreev bound states ubiquitously emerge as a consequence of nontrivial topological structures of the order parameter of superfluids and superconductors and significantly contribute to thermodynamics and low-energy quantum transport phenomena. We here share the current status of our knowledge on their multifaceted properties as Majorana fermions and odd-frequency pairing. A unified concept behind Andreev bound states originates from a soliton state in the one-dimensional Dirac equation with mass domain wall, and the interplay of ABSs with symmetry and topology enriches their physical character…
We study edge states of non-centrosymmetric superconductors where spin-singlet d-wave pairing mixes with spin-triplet p (or f)-wave one by spin-orbit coupling. For dxy-wave pairing, the obtained Andreev bound state has an anomalous dispersion as compared to conventional helical edge modes. A unique topologically protected time-reversal invariant Majorana fermion appears at the edge. The charge conductance in the non-centrosymmetric superconductor junctions reflects the anomalous structures of the dispersions, particularly the time-reversal invariant Majorana fermion is manifested as a zero bia…
The topological properties of a multiband topological superconductor in two dimensions are studied, when the latter is obtained by introducing electron pairing in an otherwise topological insulator. The type of pairing, doping and Fermi surface topology play an essential role. Considering the Andreev reflection problem, we use a previously developed quantum waveguide theory for multiorbital systems and find that, when the Fermi surface has several pockets, this theory retrieves the correct number of Majorana fermion states as predicted by the topological index. By varying band structure parame…
We show that the topology of the Fermi sea of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) is reflected in the ballistic Landauer transport along a long and narrow Josephson $π$-junction that proximitizes the 2DEG. The low-energy Andreev states bound to the junction are shown to exhibit a dispersion that is sensitive to the Euler characteristic of the Fermi sea ($χ_F$). We highlight two important relations: one connects the electron/hole nature of Andreev states to the convex/concave nature of Fermi surface critical points, and one relates these critical points to $χ_F$. We then argue that the transp…
We report on the results of directional point-contact Andreev-reflection (PCAR) measurements in Ba(Fe_{1-x}Co_x)2As2 single crystals and epitaxial c-axis oriented films with x = 0.08 as well as in Ca(Fe_{1-x}Co_x)2As2 single crystals with x = 0.06. The PCAR spectra are analyzed within the two-band 3D version of the Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk model for Andreev reflection we recently developed, and that makes use of an analytical expression for the Fermi surface that mimics the one calculated within the density-functional theory (DFT). The spectra in Ca(Fe_{0.94}Co_{0.06})2As2 unambiguously demons…
Point-contact Andreev reflection spectroscopy (PCAR) has proven to be one of the most powerful tools in the investigation of superconductors, where it provides information on the order parameter (OP), a fundamental property of the superconducting state. In the past 20 years, successive improvements of the models used to analyze the spectra have continuously extended its capabilities, making it suited to study new superconductors with "exotic" properties such as anisotropic, nodal and multiple OPs. In Fe-based superconductors, the complex compound- and doping-dependent Fermi surface and the pre…
Exotic excitations arise at the interface between a three-dimensional topological insulator (TI) and superconductors. For example, Majorana fermions with a linear dispersion, $E\sim k$, exist in a short $π$ Josephson junction on the TI surface. We show that in these systems, the Andreev bound states spectrum becomes nearly flat at zero energy when the chemical potential is sufficiently away from the Dirac point. The flat dispersion is well approximated by $E\sim k^N$, where $N$ scales with the chemical potential. Similar evolution from linear to flat dispersion also occurs for the subgap spect…
We construct a theory for low-energy quantum transport in normal$\mid$superconductor junctions involving the recently discovered iron-based high-$T_c$ superconductors. We properly take into account both Andreev bound surface states and the complex Fermi surface topology in our approach, and investigate the signatures of the possible order parameter symmetries for the FeAs-lattice. Our results could be helpful in determining the symmetry of the superconducting state in the iron-pnicitide superconductors.
The recently discovered superconductor CuxBi2Se3[1] is a candidate for three-dimensional time-reversal-invariant topological superconductors[2], which are predicted to have robust surface Andreev bound states hosting massless Majorana fermions. In this work, we present an analytical and numerical study of the surface Andreev bound state wavefunction and dispersion. We find the topologically protected Majorana fermions at k = 0, as well as a new type of surface Andreev bound states at finite k. We relate our results to a recent point-contact spectroscopy experiment[3].
We demonstrate how to design various nonstandard types of Andreev-bound-state (ABS) dispersions, via a composite construction relying on Majorana bound states (MBSs). Here, the MBSs appear at the interface of a Josephson junction consisting of two topological superconductors (TSCs). Each TSC harbors multiple MBSs per edge by virtue of a chiral or unitary symmetry. We find that, while the ABS dispersions are $2π$-periodic, they still contain multiple crossings which are protected by the conservation of fermion parity. A single junction with four interface MBSs and all MBS couplings fully contro…

We use a superconducting microresonator as a cavity to sense absorption of microwaves by a superconducting quantum point contact defined by surface gates over a proximitized two-dimensional electron gas. Renormalization of the cavity frequency with phase difference across the point contact is consistent with adiabatic coupling to Andreev bound states. Near $π$ phase difference, we observe random fluctuations in absorption with gate voltage, related to quantum interference-induced modulations in the electron transmission. We identify features consistent with the presence of single Andreev bound…
We study the surface Andreev bound states (SABSs) and quasiparticle tunneling spectroscopy of three-dimensional (3D) chiral superconductor by changing the surface (interface) misorientation angle of chiral superconductors. We obtain analytical formula of the energy dispersion of SABS for general pair potential when an original 4$\times$4 BdG Hamiltonian can be reduced to be two 2$\times$2 blocks. The resulting SABS for 3D chiral superconductors with pair potential given by $k_z(k_x + ik_y)^ν$ $(ν = 1, 2)$ has a complicated energy dispersion due to the coexistence of both point and line nodes. …
In a point contact NS junction, perfect Andreev reflection occurs over a range of voltages equal to the superconducting energy gap, producing an excess current of $I_{exc} = (4/3)(2eΔ/h)$. If the superconductor has a finite width, rather than the infinite width of the point contact, one cannot neglect superfluid flow inside the superconducting contact. The energy range available for perfect Andreev reflections then becomes larger than the superconducting gap, since superfluid flow alters the dispersion relation inside the finite width superconductor. We find a maximum excess current of approxi…
Electrons in a Dirac semimetals possess linear dispersion in all three spatial dimensions, and form part of a developing platform of novel quantum materials. Bi$_{1-x}$Sb$_x$ supports a three-dimensional Dirac cone at the Sb-induced band inversion point. Nanoscale phase-sensitive junction technology is used to induce superconductivity in this Dirac semimetal. Radio frequency irradiation experiments reveal a significant contribution of 4$π$-periodic Andreev bound states to the supercurrent in Nb-Bi$_{0.97}$Sb$_{0.03}$-Nb Josephson junctions. The conditions for a substantial $4π$ contribution to…
We demonstrate how the boundary-driven reconstruction of the superconducting order parameter can be employed to manipulate the zero-energy Majorana bound states (MBSs) occurring in a topological Josephson junction. We focus on an interface of two p-wave superconductors, which are described by a spin-vector order parameter $\bf{d}$. Apart from the sensitivity of $\bf{d}$ to external Zeeman/exchange fields, here, we show that the orientation of $\bf{d}$ throughout the junction can be controlled by electrically gating the weak link. The remarkable local character of this knob is a manifestation o…
We consider the spectrum of Andreev bound states (ABSs) in an exemplary 4-terminal superconducting structure where 4 chaotic cavities are connected by QPCs to the terminals and to each other forming a ring. Such a tunable device can be realized in 2DEG-superconductor structures. We concentrate on the limit of a short structure and large conductance of the QPCs where a quasi-continuous spectrum is formed. The energies can be tuned by the superconducting phases. We observe the opening and closing of gaps in the spectrum. This concerns the usual proximity gap that separates the levels from zero e…
We examine different topological phases in three-dimensional non-centrosymmetric superconductors with time-reversal symmetry by using three different types of topological invariants. Due to the bulk boundary correspondence, a non-zero value of any of these topological numbers indicates the appearance of zero-energy Andreev surface states. We find that some of these boundary modes in nodal superconducting phases are dispersionless, i.e., they form a topologically protected flat band. The region where the zero-energy flat band appears in the surface Brillouin zone is determined by the projection…
We investigate the Josephson radiation emitted by a junction made of a quantum dot coupled to two conventional superconductors. Close to resonance, the particle-hole symmetric Andreev states that form in the junction are detached from the continuum above the superconducting gap in the leads, while a gap between them opens near the Fermi level. Under voltage bias, we formulate a stochastic model that accounts for non-adiabatic processes, which change the occupations of the Andreev states. This model allows calculating the current noise spectrum and determining the Fano factor. Analyzing the fin…
We show that interface bound states are formed at isolated graphene-superconductor junctions. These states arise due to the interplay of virtual Andreev and normal reflections taking place at these interfaces. Simple analytical expressions for their dispersion are obtained considering interfaces formed along armchair or zig-zag edges. It is shown that the states are sensitive to a supercurrent flowing on the superconducting electrode. The states provide long range superconducting correlations on the graphene layer which may be exploited for the detection of crossed Andreev processes.
Particle transport across Josephson junctions is commonly described using a simplifying approximation (often called the Andreev approximation), which assumes that excitations are fixed at the Fermi momentum and only Andreev reflections, with no normal reflections, occur at interfaces. While this approximation is appropriate for superconductors with high carrier density (for which the chemical potential vastly exceeds the pairing gap), it breaks down for low-carrier-density superconductors, such as topological superconductors, doped semiconductors, or superfluid quantum gases. Here, we present …
Quasiparticle bound states are found theoretically on transparent interfaces of d-wave superconductors (dSC) with charge density wave solids (CDW), as well as s-wave superconductors (sSC) with d-density waves (DDW). These bound states represent a combined effect of Andreev reflection from the superconducting side and an unconventional quasiparticle Q-reflection from the density wave solid. If the order parameter for a density wave state is much less than the Fermi energy, bound states with almost zero energy take place for an arbitrary orientation of symmetric interfaces. For larger values of …
Superconductivity is a phenomenon where the macroscopic quantum coherence appears due to the pairing of electrons. This offers a fascinating arena to study the physics of broken gauge symmetry. However, the important symmetries in superconductors are not only the gauge invariance. Especially, the symmetry properties of the pairing, i.e., the parity and spin-singlet/spin-triplet, determine the physical properties of the superconducting state. Recently it has been recognized that there is the important third symmetry of the pair amplitude, i.e., even or odd parity with respect to the frequency. …
Multiterminal Josephson junctions constitute engineered topological systems in arbitrary synthetic dimensions defined by the superconducting phases. Microwave spectroscopy enables the measurement of the quantum geometric tensor, a fundamental quantity describing both the quantum geometry and the topology of the emergent Andreev bound states in a unified manner. In this work we propose an experimentally feasible multiterminal setup of $N$ quantum dots connected to $N+1$ superconducting leads to study nontrivial topology in terms of the many-body Chern number of the ground state. Moreover, we ge…
The order parameter of bulk two-dimensional superconductors is classified as nodal, if it vanishes for a direction in momentum space, or gapful if it does not. Each class can be topologically nontrivial if Andreev bound states are formed at the edges of the superconductor. Non-magnetic impurities in the superconductor affect the formation of Andreev bound states and can drastically change the tunneling spectra for small voltages. Here, we investigate the mean current and its fluctuations for two-dimensional tunnel junctions between a normal-metal and unconventional superconductors by solving t…
The high Tc superconductor FeTe0.55Se0.45 has recently been shown to support a surface state with topological character. Here we use low-energy laser-based ARPES with variable light polarization, including both linear and circular polarization, to re-examine the same material and the related FeTe0.7Se0.3, with larger Te concentration. In both cases we observe the presence of a surface state displaying linear dispersion in a cone-like configuration. The use of circular polarization confirms the presence of helical spin structure. These experimental studies are compared with theoretical studies …
We report the first comprehensive high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements on CeFeAsO, a parent compound of FeAs-based high temperature superconductors with a mangetic/structural transition at $\sim$150 K. In the magnetic ordering state, four hole-like Fermi surface sheets are observed near $Γ$(0,0) and the Fermi surface near M(+/-$π$,+/-$π$) shows a tiny electron-like pocket at M surrounded by four Dirac cone-like strong spots. The unusual Fermi surface topology deviates strongly from the band structure calculations. The electronic signature of the magnetic/structural transit…
