Colored Morton-Franks-Williams inequalities

We generalize the Morton-Franks-Williams inequality to the colored $\mathfrak{sl}(N)$ link homology defined in arXiv:0907.0695, which gives infinitely many new bounds for the braid index and the self linking number. A key ingredient of our proof is a composition product for the general MOY graph polynomial, which generalizes that of Wagner arXiv:math/0702230v1.

Non-sharpness of the Morton-Franks-Williams inequality

We give conditions on a knot on which the Morton-Franks-Williams inequality is not sharp. As applications, we show infinitely many examples of knots where the inequality is not sharp and also prove (by giving examples) that the deficit of the inequality can be arbitrarily large.

Sharpness of the Morton-Franks-Williams inequality for positive knots and links

We provide a combinatorial characterisation of positive diagrams satisfying the equality in the Morton-Franks-Williams bound for the degrees of the HOMFLY-PT polynomial. This characterisation allows generating with relative ease examples of diagrams realizing the crossing number, the braid index, and the maximal self-linking number. Besides, we suggest a conjecture concerning the sharpness of the Morton-Franks-Williams inequality for strongly quasipositive links.

Closures of positive braids and the Morton-Franks-Williams inequality

We study the Morton-Franks-Williams inequality for closures of simple braids (also known as positive permutation braids). This allows to prove, in a simple way, that the set of simple braids is a orthonormal basis for the inner product of the Hecke algebra of the braid group defined by Kálmán, who first obtained this result by using an interesting connection with Contact Topology. On the crossing number of positive knots and braids and braid index criteria of Jones and Morton-Williams-Franks

We give examples of knots with some unusual properties of the crossing number of positive diagrams or strand number of positive braid representations. In particular we show that positive braid knots may not have positive minimal (strand number) braid representations, giving a counterpart to results of Franks-Williams and Murasugi. Other examples answer questions of Cromwell on homogeneous and (partially) of Adams on almost alternating knots. Properties of closed 3-braids

We show that 3-braid links with given (non-zero) Alexander or Jones polynomial are finitely many, and can be effectively determined. We classify among closed 3-braids strongly quasipositive and fibered ones, and show that 3-braid links have a unique incompressible Seifert surface. We also classify the positive braid words with Morton-Williams-Franks bound 3 and show that closed positive braids of braid index 3 are closed positive 3-braids. Classifying expanding attractors on figure eight knot complement space and non-transitive Anosov flows on Franks-Williams manifold

The path closure of figure eight knot complement space, $N_0$, supports a natural DA (derived from Anosov) expanding attractor. Using this attractor, Franks-Williams constructed the first example of non-transitive Anosov flow on the manifold $M_0$ obtained by gluing two copies of $N_0$ through identity map along their boundaries, named by Franks-Williams manifold. Khovanov-Rozansky homology and the braid index of a knot

We prove the existence of a knot whose braid index the Morton-Franks-Williams inequality fails to detect but a related inequality (KR-MFW inequality), which uses new information of Khovanov-Rozansky homology, detects. We also prove, by examples, that there exists infinitely many knots for which the KR-MFW inequality fails to detect the braid indices.
