2MASS JHKs data are used to infer the reddening and distance of open clusters for which limited optical data are available. Intrinsic ZAMS color-color and color-magnitude relations are derived with reference to existing calibrations, standard stars, three uniformly-reddened clusters: Stock 16, NGC 2362, and NGC 2281, and unreddened Hyades dwarfs. The method of inferring interstellar reddening and distance for sparsely-populated open clusters is applied to Berkeley 44, Turner 1, and Collinder 419, for which existing results conflict with those inferred from JHKs data. The last two clusters are of special interest: Turner 1 because it hosts the Galaxy's longest-period classical Cepheid, and Collinder 419 because it lies in the Cygnus X complex.
This research aims to secure precise distances for cluster delta Scutis in order to investigate their properties via a VI Wesenheit framework. Deep JHKs colour-colour and ZAMS relations derived from ~700 unreddened stars featuring 2MASS photometry and precise HIP parallaxes (d<~25 pc) are applied to establish distances to several benchmark open clusters that host delta Scutis: Hyades, Pleiades, Praesepe, alpha Per, and M67 (d=47+-2,138+-6,183+-8,171+-8,815+-40 pc). That analysis provided constraints on the delta Sct sample's absolute Wesenheit magnitudes (W_VI,0), evolutionary status, and puls…
Approximately 14% of known Galactic open clusters possess absolute errors 20% as evaluated from n>3 independent distance estimates, and the statistics for age estimates are markedly worse. That impedes such diverse efforts as calibrating standard candles and constraining masses for substellar companions. New data from the VVV survey may be employed to establish precise cluster distances with comparatively reduced uncertainties (<10%). This is illustrated by deriving parameters for Pismis 19 and NGC 4349, two pertinent open clusters which hitherto feature sizable uncertainties (60%). Fundamenta…
A hybrid JHKs-W1W2W3W4 high-spectral index (alpha) selection scheme was employed to identify (sub)clusters of class I/f candidate protostars (YSOs) in WISE observations (the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer). n>10^4 candidate YSOs were detected owing to WISE's advantageous all-sky spatial coverage, and a subsample (n~200) of their heavily-obscured host (sub)clusters were correlated with the Avedisova (2002) and Dias et al. (2002) catalogs of star-forming regions. Forthcoming observations from the VVV/UKIDSS surveys shall facilitate the detection of additional protostars and bolster efforts …

Atmospheric and evolutionary models for low-mass stars rely on approximate assumptions on the physics of the stellar structure and the atmospheric radiative transfer. This leads to biased theoretical predictions on the photospheric Spectral Energy Distributions of Pre-Main Sequence (PMS) stars, and affects the derivation of stellar parameters from photometric data. Our goal is to correct the biases present in the theoretical predictions for the near-IR photometry of low-mass PMS stars. Using empirical intrinsic IR colors, we assess the accuracy of current synthetic spectral libraries and evolu…
The high extinction and extreme source crowding of the central regions of the Milky Way are serious obstacles to the study of the structure and stellar population of the Galactic centre (GC). Existing surveys that cover the GC region (2MASS, UKIDSS, VVV, SIRIUS) do not have the necessary high angular resolution. Therefore, a high-angular-resolution survey in the near infrared is crucial to improve the state of the art. Here, we present the GALACTICNUCLEUS catalogue, a near infrared $JHK_s$ high-angular-resolution ($0.2''$) survey of the nuclear bulge of the Milky Way. We explain in detail the …
Here we have obtained the {\it BVRI CCD} photometry down to a limiting magnitude of $V \sim$ 20 for the southern poorly studied open cluster NGC 6631. It is observed from the {\it 1.88 m} Telescope of Kottamia Observatory in Egypt. About 3300 stars have been observed in an area of $\sim 10^{\prime} \times 10^{\prime}$ around the cluster center. The main photometric parameters have been estimated and compared with the results that determined for the cluster using {\it JHKs 2MASS} photometric database. The cluster's diameter is estimated to be 10 arcmin; the reddening E(B-V)= 0.68 $\pm$ 0.10 mag…
We present wide field JHKs photometry of 16 Galactic globular clusters located towards the Galactic bulge, calibrated on the 2MASS photometric system. Differential reddening corrections and statistical field star decontamination are employed for all of these clusters before fitting fiducial sequences to the cluster red giant branches (RGBs). Observed values and uncertainties are reported for several photometric features, including the magnitude of the RGB bump, tip, the horizontal branch (HB) and the slope of the upper RGB. The latest spectroscopically determined chemical abundances are used t…
The BVRcIc CCD photometry in the fields of six open clusters toward the Perseus spiral arm is presented. These data along with JHKs magnitudes taken from 2MASS catalog, have been used to determine cluster's ages, distances and color excesses. In addition, the gaps in mass function of Be 97, King 12 and NGC 7788 clusters have been revealed in mass intervals of 1.3-1.5, 1.4-1.6 and 1.5-1.7 solar masses, respectively.
The new multi-epoch near-infrared VVV survey (VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea) is sampling 562 sq. deg of the Galactic bulge and adjacent regions of the disk. Accurate astrometry established for the region surveyed allows the VVV data to be merged with overlapping surveys (e.g., GLIMPSE, WISE, 2MASS, etc.), thereby enabling the construction of longer baseline spectral energy distributions for astronomical targets. However, in order to maximize use of the VVV data, a set of transformation equations are required to place the VVV JHKs photometry onto the 2MASS system. The impetus for this work …
We perform a discrimination procedure with the spectral index diagram of TiO5 and CaH2+CaH3 to separate M giants from M dwarfs. Using the M giant spectra identified from the LAMOST DR1 with high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), we have successfully assembled a set of M giant templates, which show more reliable spectral features. Combining with the M dwarf/subdwarf templates in Zhong et al. (2015), we present an extended M-type templates library which includes not only M dwarfs with well-defined temperature and metallicity grid but also M giants with subtype from M0 to M6. Then, the template-fit al…
There is a growing interest in the automated characterization of open clusters using data from the Gaia mission. This work evidences the importance of choosing an appropriate sampling radius (the radius of the circular region around the cluster used to extract the data) and the usefulness of additional multiband photometry in order to achieve accurate results. We address this issue using as a case study the cluster Alessi-Teutsch 9. The optimal sampling is determined by counting the number of assigned members at different sampling radii. By using this strategy with data from Gaia EDR3 and with…
VISTA Variables in the Vía Láctea (VVV) is one of six ESO Public Surveys using the 4 meter Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA). The VVV survey covers the Milky Way bulge and an adjacent section of the disk, and one of the principal objectives is to search for new star clusters within previously unreachable obscured parts of the Galaxy. The primary motivation behind this work is to discover and analyze obscured star clusters in the direction of the inner Galactic disk and bulge. Regions of the inner disk and bulge covered by the VVV survey were visually inspected using c…
Context: The ESO Public Survey "VISTA Variables in the Vía Láctea" (VVV) provides deep multi-epoch infrared observations for an unprecedented 562 sq. degrees of the Galactic bulge, and adjacent regions of the disk. Aims: The VVV observations will foster the construction of a sample of Galactic star clusters with reliable and homogeneously derived physical parameters (e.g., age, distance, and mass, etc.). In this first paper in a series, the methodology employed to establish cluster parameters for the envisioned database are elaborated upon by analyzing a subsample of 4 known young open cluster…
The Milky Way (MW) remains a primary laboratory for understanding the structure and evolution of spiral galaxies, but typically we are denied clear views of MW stellar populations at low Galactic latitudes because of extinction by interstellar dust. However, the combination of 2MASS near-infrared (NIR) and Spitzer-IRAC mid-infrared (MIR) photometry enables a powerful method for determining the line of sight reddening to any star: the sampled wavelengths lie in the Rayleigh-Jeans part of the spectral energy distribution of most stars, where, to first order, all stars have essentially the same i…
We have started a campaign to identify massive star clusters inside bright molecular bubbles towards the Galactic Center. The CN15/16/17 molecular complex is the first example of our study. The region is characterized by the presence of two young clusters, DB10 and DB11, visible in the NIR, an ultra-compact HII region identified in the radio, several young stellar objects visible in the MIR, a bright diffuse nebulosity at 8μm coming from PAHs and sub-mm continuum emission revealing the presence of cold dust. Given its position on the sky (l=0.58, b=-0.85) and its kinematic distance of ~7.5 kpc…
Context: It is not known how many globular clusters may have been left undetected towards the Galactic bulge. Aims: One of the aims of the VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea (VVV) Survey is to accurately measure the physical parameters of the known globular clusters in the inner regions of the Milky Way and to search for new ones, hidden in regions of large extinction. Methods: Deep near infrared images give deep JHKs-band photometry of a region surrounding the known globular cluster UKS 1 and reveal a new low-mass globular cluster candidate that we name VVV CL001. Results: We use the horizonta…
There is a lack of state-of-the-art information on very young open clusters, with implications for determining the structure of the Galaxy. Our main objective is to study the timing and location of the star formation processes which yielded the generation of the giant HII region Sh 2-284. The analysis is based on UBVRcIc CCD measurements and JHKs photometry in the central part of the HII region, where the cluster Dolidze 25 is located. The determination of cluster distance, reddening and age is carried out through comparison with ZAMS, post-MS and PMS isochrones. Reference lines for metallicity…
Aims. The formation and properties of star clusters at the edge of H II regions are poorly known, partly due to limitations in angular resolution and sensitivity, which become particularly critical when dealing with extragalactic clusters. In this paper we study the stellar content and star-formation processes in the young N159W region in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Methods. We investigate the star-forming sites in N159W at unprecedented spatial resolution using JHKs-band images obtained with the GeMS/GSAOI instrument on the Gemini South telescope. The typical angular resolution of the images …
Embedded clusters like W3 Main are complex and dynamically evolving systems that represent an important phase of the star formation process. We aim at the characterization of the entire stellar content of W3 Main in a statistical sense to identify possible differences in evolutionary phase of the stellar populations and find clues about the formation mechanism of this massive embedded cluster. Methods. Deep JHKs imaging is used to derive the disk fraction, Ks-band luminosity functions and mass functions for several subregions in W3 Main. A two dimensional completeness analysis using artificial…
Type II Cepheids (T2Cs) are radially pulsating variables that trace old stellar populations and provide distance estimates through their period-luminosity (PL) relation. We trace the structure of old stars in the Bulge using new distance estimates and kinematic properties of T2Cs. We present new NIR photometry of T2Cs in the bulge from the VVV survey. We provide the largest sample (894 stars) of T2Cs with JHKs observations that have accurate periods from the OGLE catalog. Our analysis makes use of the Ks-band time-series to estimate mean magnitudes and distances by means of the PL relation. To…
We present a bright galaxy sample with accurate and precise photometric redshifts (photo-zs), selected using $ugriZYJHK_\mathrm{s}$ photometry from the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS) Data Release 4 (DR4). The highly pure and complete dataset is flux-limited at $r<20$ mag, covers $\sim1000$ deg$^2$, and contains about 1 million galaxies after artifact masking. We exploit the overlap with Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) spectroscopy as calibration to determine photo-zs with the supervised machine learning neural network algorithm implemented in the ANNz2 software. The photo-zs have mean error of $|\l…
