Using archival observations recorded over a 5+ year timeframe with the NASA Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) satellite, we present a study of the ultraviolet (UV) variability of 4360 quasars of redshifts up to z=2.5 that have optical counterparts in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey DR5 spectroscopic catalog. The observed changes in both the far UV (FUV: 1350-1785A) and near UV (NUV: 1770-2830A) AB magnitudes as a function of time may help differentiate between models of the emission mechanisms thought to operate in these active galaxies. A list of NUV and FUV variable quasars was derived from the UV light-curves of sources with 5 or more observational visits by GALEX that spanned a time-frame greater than 3 months. By measuring the error in the derived mean UV magnitude from the series of GALEX observations for each source, quasars whose UV variability was greater than the 3-sigma variance from the mean observed value were deemed to be (intrinsically) UV variable. This conservative selection criterion (which was applied to both FUV and NUV observations) resulted in identifying 550 NUV and 371 FUV quasars as being statistically significant UV variable objects.
CONTEXT: The Virgo direction has been observed at many wavelengths in the recent years, in particular in the ultraviolet with GALEX. The far ultraviolet (FUV) diffuse light detected by GALEX bears interesting information on the large scale distribution of Galactic dust, owing to the GALEX FUV band sensitivity and resolution. AIMS: We aim to characterise the ultraviolet large scale distribution of diffuse emission in the Virgo direction. A map of this emission may become useful for various studies by identifying regions where dust affects observations by either scattering light or absorbing rad…
The ultraviolet catalog of nearby galaxies made by \citet{Gil07} presents the integrated photometry and surface brightness profiles for 1034 nearby galaxies observed by \textit{Galaxy Evolution Explorer} (\textit{GALEX}). We provide an updated catalog of 4138 nearby galaxies based on the latest Genral Release (GR6/GR7) of \textit{GALEX}. These galaxies are selected from HyperLeda with apparent diameter larger than 1{\arcmin}. From the surface brightness profiles accurately measured with the deep NUV and FUV images, we have calculated asymptotic magnitudes, aperture (D25) magnitudes, colors, st…
We present a map of the diffuse ultraviolet cosmic background in two wavelength bands (FUV: 1530 Å; NUV: 2310 Å) over almost 75% of the sky using archival data from the GALEX mission. Most of the diffuse flux is due to dust-scattered starlight and follows a cosecant law with slopes of 545 photons cm-2 s-1 sr-1 Å-1 and 433 photons cm-2 s-1 sr-1 Å-1 in the FUV and NUV bands, respectively. There is a strong correlation with the 100 μm IRAS flux with an average UV/IR ratio of 300 photons cm-2 s-1 sr-1 Å-1 (MJy sr-1)-1 in the FUV band and 220 photons cm-2 s-1 sr-1 Å-1 (MJy sr-1)-1 in the NUV but wi…
GALEX, the first all sky imaging UV satellite, has imaged a large part of the sky providing an excellent opportunity for studying UV star counts. The aim of our study is to investigate in detail the observed UV star counts obtained by GALEX vis-a-vis the model simulated catalogs produced by the Besancon model of stellar population synthesis in various Galactic directions, and to explore the potential for studying the structure of our Galaxy from images in multiple NUV and FUV filters of the forthcoming Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) to be flown onboard ASTROSAT. We have upgraded the Besa…
The Taurus-Auriga molecular complex (TMC) is the main laboratory for the study of low mass star formation. The density and properties of interstellar dust are expected to vary across the TMC. These variations trace important processes such as dust nucleation or the magnetic field coupling with the cloud. In this article, we show how the combination of near ultraviolet (NUV) and infrared (IR) photometry can be used to derive the strength of the 2175 Å bump and thus any enhancement in the abundance of small dust grains and PAHs in the dust grains size distribution. This technique is applied to t…
In this paper we introduce the deepest and most extensive ultraviolet extragalactic source catalogs of the Virgo Cluster area to date. Archival and targeted GALEX imaging is compiled and combined to provide the deepest possible coverage over ~120 deg^2 in the NUV (lambda_eff=2316 angstroms) and ~40 deg^2 in the FUV (lambda_eff=1539 angstroms) between 180 deg <= R.A. <= 195 deg and 0 deg <= Decl. <= 20 deg. We measure the integrated photometry of 1770 extended UV sources of all galaxy types and use GALEX pipeline photometry for 1,230,855 point-like sources in the foreground, within, and behind …
The Galaxy Evolution Exporer (GALEX) has performed unprecedented imaging surveys of the Magellanic Clouds (MC) and their surrounding areas including the Magellanic Bridge (MB) in near-UV (NUV, 1771-2831Å) and far-UV (FUV, 1344-1786Å) bands at 5" resolution. Substantially more area was covered in the NUV than FUV, particularly in the bright central regions, because of the GALEX FUV detector failure. The 5$σ$ depth of the NUV imaging varies between 20.8 and 22.7 (ABmag). Such imaging provides the first sensitive view of the entire content of hot stars in the Magellanic System, revealing the pres…
The distribution of neutral hydrogen in the intergalactic medium (IGM) is currently explored at low-z by means of UV spectroscopy of quasars. We propose an alternative approach based on UV colours of quasars as observed from GALEX surveys. We built a NUV-selected sample of 9033 quasars with (FUV-NUV) colours. The imprint of HI absorption in the observed colours is suggested qualitatively by their distribution as a function of quasar redshift. Because broad band fluxes lack spectral resolution and are sensitive to a large range of N_HI a Monte Carlo simulation of IGM opacity is required for qua…
Extreme deconvolution (XD) of broad-band photometric data can both separate stars from quasars and generate probability density functions for quasar redshifts, while incorporating flux uncertainties and missing data. Mid-infrared photometric colors are now widely used to identify hot dust intrinsic to quasars, and the release of all-sky WISE data has led to a dramatic increase in the number of IR-selected quasars. Using forced-photometry on public WISE data at the locations of SDSS point sources, we incorporate this all-sky data into the training of the XDQSOz models originally developed to se…
Interstellar extinction in ultraviolet is the most severe in comparison with optical and infrared wavebands and a precise determination plays an important role in correctly recovering the ultraviolet brightness and colors of objects. By finding the observed bluest colors at given effective temperature and metallicity range of dwarf stars, stellar intrinsic colors, $C^0_{\rm B,V}$, $C^0_{\rm NUV,B}$, $C^0_{\rm FUV,B}$ and $C^0_{\rm FUV,NUV}$, are derived according to the stellar parameters from the LAMOST spectroscopic survey and photometric results from the $GALEX$ and APASS surveys. With the …
We have found variations in the diffuse ultraviolet background on the scale about 10 days over the 10 year life of the GALEX mission. These variations are only apparent in the near-ultraviolet band of GALEX and are most likely related to variations in the zodiacal light due to brightness variations of the solar NUV flux. The variations can be as high as 200 photon units in the NUV, amounting to about 15 % of the zodiacal light or < 10 % of the total NUV diffuse radiation. There is no effect on the far-ultraviolet band of GALEX. Further work will require better observations chosen specifically …
We present ultraviolet (UV) integrated colors of 44 Galactic globular clusters (GGCs) observed with the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) in both FUV and NUV bands. We find for the first time that GCs associated with the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy have (FUV-V) colors systematically redder than GGCs with the same metallicity. M31 GCs show almost the same UV colors as GGCs, while M87 are systematically bluer. We speculate about the presence of an interesting trend, suggesting that the UV color of GCs may be correlated with the mass of the host galaxy, in the sense that more massive galaxies posses…
Although core helium-burning red clump (RC) stars are faint at ultraviolet wavelengths, their ultraviolet-optical color is a unique and accessible probe of their physical properties. Using data from the GALEX All Sky Imaging Survey, Gaia Data Release 2 and the SDSS APOGEE DR14 survey, we find that spectroscopic metallicity is strongly correlated with the location of an RC star in the UV-optical color magnitude diagram. The RC has a wide spread in (NUV - G)$_0$ color, over 4 magnitudes, compared to a 0.7-magnitude range in (G$_{BP}$ - G$_{RP}$)$_0$. We propose a photometric, dust-corrected, ult…
We present GALEX near ultraviolet (NUV:1750 - 2750A) and far ultraviolet (FUV: 1350 - 1750A) imaging observations of two 1.2 degree diameter fields in the Hyades and Pleiades open clusters in order to detect possible UV variability of the member stars. We have performed a detailed software search for short-term UV flux variability during these observations of the approx 400 sources detected in each of the Hyades and Pleiades fields to identify flare-like (dMe) stellar objects. This search resulted in the detection of 16 UV variable sources, of which 13 can be directly associated with probable …
In recent work done by Sun et. al., the color variation of quasars, namely the bluer-when-brighter trend, was found to be timescale-dependent using SDSS $g/r$ band light curves in the Stripe 82. Such timescale dependence, i.e., bluer variation at shorter timescales, supports the thermal fluctuation origin of the UV/optical variation in quasars, and can be well modeled with the inhomogeneous accretion disk model. In this paper, we extend the study to much shorter wavelengths in the rest frame (down to extreme UV), using GALaxy Evolution eXplorer (GALEX) photometric data of quasars collected in …
We have performed a comprehensive study of the UV emission detected from AGB stars by the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX). Of the 468 AGB stars in our sample, 316 were observed by GALEX. In the NUV bandpass ($λ_{\rm eff} \sim 2310$z A), 179 AGB stars were detected and 137 were not detected. Only 38 AGB stars were detected in the FUV bandpass ($λ_{\rm eff} \sim1528$ A). We find that NUV emission is correlated with optical to near infrared emission leading to higher detection fractions among the brightest, hence closest, AGB stars. Comparing the AGB time-variable visible phased light curves to…
CONTEXT:At low redshift, early-type galaxies often exhibit a rising flux with decreasing wavelength in the 1000-2500 Å range, called "UV upturn". The origin of this phenomenon is debated, and its evolution with redshift is poorly constrained. The observed GALEX FUV-NUV color can be used to probe the UV upturn approximately to redshift 0.5. AIMS: We provide constraints on the existence of the UV upturn up to redshift $\sim$ 0.4 in the brightest cluster galaxies (BCG) located behind the Virgo cluster, using data from the GUViCS survey. METHODS:We estimate the GALEX far-UV (FUV) and near-UV (NUV)…
We present a catalog of GALEX Near-UV (NUV) and Far-UV (FUV) photometry for the Palomar/MSU and SDSS DR7 spectroscopic M dwarf catalogs. The catalog contains NUV measurements matched to 577 spectroscopically confirmed M dwarfs and FUV measurements matched to 150 spectroscopically confirmed M dwarfs. Using these data, we find that NUV and FUV luminosities strongly correlate with Hα emission, a typical indicator of magnetic activity in M dwarfs. We also examine the fraction of M dwarfs with varying degrees of strong line emission at NUV wavelengths. Our results indicate that the frequency of M d…
We derive transformation equations between GALEX and UBV colours by using the reliable data of 556 stars. We present two sets of equations; as a function of (only) luminosity class, and as a function of both luminosity class and metallicity. The metallicities are provided from the literature, while the luminosity classes are determined by using the PARSEC mass tracks in this study. Small colour residuals and high squared correlation coefficients promise accurate derived colours. The application of the transformation equations to 70 stars with reliable data shows that the metallicity plays an i…
Selection of extreme objects in the data from large-scale sky surveys is a powerful tool for the detection of new classes of astrophysical objects or rare stages of their evolution. The cross-matching of catalogues and analysis of the color indices of their objects is a usual approach for this problem which has already provided a lot of interesting results. However, the analysis of objects that are found in only one of the surveys, and absent in all others, should also attract close attention, as it may lead to the discovery of both transients and objects with extreme color values. Here we rep…
We use the GALEX data of the GUViCS survey to construct the NUV luminosity function of the Virgo cluster over ~ 300 deg.2, an area covering the cluster and its surrounding regions up to ~ 1.8 virial radii. The NUV luminosity function is also determined for galaxies of different morphological type and NUV-i colour, and for the different substructures within the cluster. These luminosity functions are robust vs. statistical corrections since based on a sample of 833 galaxies mainly identified as cluster members with spectroscopic redshift (808) or high-quality optical scaling relations (10). We …
We present ultraviolet integrated and azimuthally-averaged surface photometric properties of a sample of 44 dIm, BCD, and Sm galaxies measured from archival NUV and FUV images obtained with GALEX. We compare the UV to Halpha and V-band properties and convert FUV, Halpha, and V-band luminosities into star formation rates (SFRs). We also model the star formation history from colors and compare the integrated SFRs and SFR profiles with radius for these methods. In most galaxies, the UV photometry extends beyond Halpha in radius, providing a better measure of the star formation activity in the out…
The Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) imaged the sky in two Ultraviolet (UV) bands, far-UV (FUV) and near-UV (NUV), delivering the first comprehensive sky surveys at these wavelengths. The GALEX database contains FUV and NUV images, 500~million source measurements and over 100,000 low-resolution UV spectra. [...] We present science-enhanced, clean catalogs of GALEX UV sources, with useful tags to facilitate scientific investigations. The catalogs are an improved and expanded version of our previous catalogs of UV sources (Bianchi et al. 2011, 2014: BCScat). With respect to BCScat, we have patc…
We present GALEX far (FUV) and near (NUV) ultraviolet imaging of 34 nearby early-type galaxies from the SAURON representative sample of 48 E/S0 galaxies, all of which have ground-based optical imaging from the MDM Observatory. The surface brightness profiles of nine galaxies show regions with blue UV-optical colours suggesting recent star formation. Five of these show blue integrated UV-optical colours that set them aside in the NUV integrated colour-magnitude relation. They also have other properties confirming they have had recent star formation, in particular H_beta absorption higher than e…
We use 1837 DA white dwarfs with high signal to noise ratio spectra and Gaia parallaxes to verify the absolute calibration and extinction coefficients for the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX). We use white dwarfs within 100 pc to verify the linearity correction to the GALEX data. We find that the linearity correction is valid for magnitudes brighter than 15.95 and 16.95 for the Far Ultraviolet (FUV) and Near Ultraviolet (NUV) bands, respectively. We also use DA white dwarfs beyond 250 pc to calculate extinction coefficients in the FUV and NUV bands; $R_{\rm FUV}=8.01 \pm 0.07$ and $R_{\rm NUV…

Ultraviolet observations from low Earth orbit (LEO) have to deal with a foreground comprised of airglow and zodiacal light which depend on the look direction and on the date and time of the observation. We have used all-sky observations from the GALEX spacecraft to find that the airglow may be divided into a baseline dependent on the sun angle and a component dependent only on the time from local midnight. The zodiacal light is observable only in the near ultraviolet band (2321 Å) of GALEX and is proportional to the zodiacal light in the visible but with a color of 0.65 indicating that the dus…
Stellar population studies of early-type galaxies (ETGs) based on their optical stellar continuum suggest that these are quiescent systems. However, emission lines and ultraviolet photometry reveal a diverse population. We use a new version of the STARLIGHT spectral synthesis code and state-of-the-art stellar population models to simultaneously fit SDSS spectra and GALEX photometry for a sample of 3453 galaxies at $z < 0.1$ with $NUV-r > 5$ that are classified as elliptical by Galaxy Zoo. We reproduce $FUV$ magnitudes for 80 per cent of UV upturn galaxies selected using criteria from the liter…
We present the first detection of diffuse dust in the intra-cluster medium of the Virgo cluster out to $\sim$0.4 virial radii, and study the radial variation of its properties on a radial scale of the virial radius. Analysing near-UV - $i$ colours for a sample of $\sim12000$ background galaxies with redshifts $0.02 < z < 0.8$, we find significant colour reddening and relate it to variation in $E(B-V)$ values. The $E(B-V)$ mean profile shows a dust component characterised by an average reddening $E(B-V)\sim0.042 \pm 0.004$ mag within 1.5 degrees ($\sim0.3\, r_{vir}$) from the cluster centre. As…
Extinction in ultraviolet is much more significant than in optical or infrared, which can be very informative to precisely measure the extinction and understand the dust properties in the low extinction areas. The high Galactic latitude sky is such an area, important for studying the extragalactic sky and the universe. Based on the stellar parameters measured by the LAMOST and GALAH spectroscopy and the ultraviolet photomery by the \emph{GALEX} space telescope, the extinction of 1,244,504 stars in the \emph{GALEX}/NUV band and 56,123 stars in the \emph{GALEX}/FUV band are calculated precisely.…
Only a handful of quasars have been identified as kinetically dominated, their long term time averaged jet power, $\overline{Q}$, exceeds the bolometric thermal emission, $L_{bol}$, associated with the accretion flow. This letter presents the first extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectrum of a kinetically dominated quasar, 3C 270.1. The EUV continuum flux density of 3C 270.1 is very steep, $F_ν \sim ν^{-α_{EUV}}$, $α_{EUV} =2.98\pm 0.15$. This value is consistent with the correlation of $\overline{Q}/L_{bol}$ and $α_{EUV}$ found in previous studies of the EUV continuum of quasars, the EUV deficit of…
We study the role of the environment on galaxy evolution using a sample of 868 galaxies in the Virgo cluster and in its surrounding regions selected from the GUViCS Survey with the purpose of understanding the origin of the red sequence in dense environments. We collected multifrequency data covering the whole electromagnetic spectrum for most of the galaxies. We identify the different dynamical substructures composing the Virgo cluster and we calculate the local density of galaxies using different methods. We then study the distribution of galaxies belonging to the red sequence, the green val…
Studies of radio-loud (RL) broad absorption line (BAL) quasars indicate that popular orientation-based BAL models fail to account for all observations. Are these results extendable to radio-quiet (RQ) BAL quasars? Comparisons of RL and RQ BAL quasars show that many of their properties are quite similar. Here we extend these analyses to the rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) spectral properties, using a sample of 73 RL and 473 RQ BAL quasars selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Each RQ quasar is individually matched to a RL quasar in both redshift (over the range $1.5 < z < 3.5$) and con…
The ionising continuum from active galactic nuclei (AGN) is fundamental for interpreting their broad emission lines and understanding their impact on the surrounding gas. Furthermore, it provides hints on how matter accretes onto supermassive black holes. Using HST's Wide Field Camera 3 we have constructed the first stacked ultraviolet (rest-frame wavelengths 600-2500Å) spectrum of 53 luminous quasars at z=2.4, with a state-of-the-art correction for the intervening Lyman forest and Lyman continuum absorption. The continuum slope ($f_ν\propto ν^{α_ν}$) of the full sample shows a break at ~912Å …
The spectrum of a quasar contains important information about its properties. Thus, it can be expected that two quasars with similar spectra will have similar properties, but just how similar has not before been quantified. Here we compare the ultraviolet spectra of a sample of 5553 quasars from Data Release 7 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, focusing on the $1350$ Å\ $\leq λ\leq 2900$ Å\ rest-frame region which contains prominent emission lines from \SiIV, O IV], \CIV, \CIII, and \MgII\ species. We use principal component analysis to determine the dominant components of spectral variation, as…
The Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) has performed the first surveys of the sky in the Ultraviolet (UV). Its legacy is an unprecedented database with more than 200 million source measurements in far-UV (FUV) and near-UV (NUV), as well as wide-field imaging of extended objects, filling an important gap in our view of the sky across the electromagnetic spectrum. The UV surveys offer unique sensitivity for identifying and studying selected classes of astrophysical objects, both stellar and extra-galactic. We examine the overall content and distribution of UV sources over the sky, and with magnit…
We have used Voyager and Galex observations to map the diffuse Galactic light near the Galactic equator. We find that most of the observations are relatively faint with surface brightnesses of less than 5,000 photon units. This is important because many ultraviolet telescopes have not observed at low Galactic latitudes because of the fear of a bright diffuse emission. Our data are consistent with emission from interstellar dust grains with albedo ($a$) of 0.2 -- 0.3 and phase function ($g$) $ < 0.7$ at 1100 Å; $0.2 < a < 0.5; g < 0.8$ at 1500 Å; and $0.4 < a < 0.6; g < 0.4$ at 2300 Å.
The hottest stars ($>$10,000 K), and by extension typically the most massive ones, are those that will be prevalent in the ultraviolet (UV) portion of the electromagnetic spectrum, and we expect numerous B, O, and Wolf-Rayet stars to be bright in UV data. In this paper, we update the previous UV catalog of M33, created using the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UIT), using data from the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX). We utilize PSF photometry to better handle the crowded regions in the galaxy, and benefit from GALEX's increased sensitivity compared to UIT. We match our detections with data f…
We report on a Hubble Space Telescope search for rest-frame ultraviolet emission from the host galaxies of five far-infrared-luminous $z\simeq{}6$ quasars and the $z=5.85$ hot-dust free quasar SDSS J0005-0006. We perform 2D surface brightness modeling for each quasar using a Markov-Chain Monte-Carlo estimator, to simultaneously fit and subtract the quasar point source in order to constrain the underlying host galaxy emission. We measure upper limits for the quasar host galaxies of $m_J>22.7$ mag and $m_H>22.4$ mag, corresponding to stellar masses of $M_\ast<2\times10^{11}M_\odot$. These stella…
The observed relation between the soft X-ray and the optical-ultraviolet emission in active galactic nuclei (AGN) is non-linear and it is usually parametrized as a dependence between the logarithm of the monochromatic luminosity at 2500 Å and at 2 keV. Previous investigations have found that the dispersion of this relation is rather high (~0.35-0.4 in log units), which may be caused by measurement uncertainties, variability, and intrinsic dispersion due to differences in the AGN physical properties (e.g. different accretion modes). We show that, once optically-selected quasars with homogeneous…
This paper reports on the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectrum of three low redshift ($z \sim 0.6$) radio loud quasars, 3C 95, 3C 57 and PKS 0405-123. The spectra were obtained with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) of the Hubble Space Telescope. The bolometric thermal emission, $L_{bol}$, associated with the accretion flow is a large fraction of the Eddington limit for all of these sources. We estimate the long term time averaged jet power, $\overline{Q}$, for the three sources. $\overline{Q}/L_{bol}$, is shown to lie along the correlation of $\overline{Q}/L_{bol}$ and $α_{EUV}$ found in pr…
We present a dust-column--dependent extinction curve parameters for ultraviolet wavelengths at high Galactic latitudes. This extinction function diverges from previous work in that it takes into account the results of Peek & Schiminovich 2013 (Paper I), which demonstrated that there is more reddening in the GALEX bands than would be otherwise expected for E(B-V) < 0.2. We also test the biases in the Planck and SFD extinction maps, and find that the SFD extinction maps are significantly biased at E(B-V) < 0.2. We find that while an extinction function that that takes into account a varying R_FU…
We report the discovery of five new doubly-imaged lensed quasars from the first 2500 square degrees of the ongoing Canada-France Imaging Survey (CFIS), which is a component of the Ultraviolet Near Infrared Optical Northern Survey (UNIONS), selected from initial catalogues of either Gaia pairs or MILLIQUAS quasars. We take advantage of the deep, 0.6'' median-seeing $r$-band imaging of CFIS to confirm the presence of multiple point sources with similar colour of $u-r$, via convolution of the Laplacian of the point spread function. Requiring similar-colour point sources with flux ratios less than…
We present a study of quasars with very redward asymmetric (RA) ultraviolet (UV) broad emission lines (BELs). An excess of redshifted emission has been previously shown to occur in the BELs of radio loud quasars and is most extreme in certain blazars. Paradoxically, blazars are objects that are characterized by a highly relativistic blue-shifted outflow towards Earth. We show that the red emitting gas resides in a very broad component (VBC) that is typical of Population B quasars that are defined by a wide H$β$ BEL profile. Empirically, we find that RA BEL blazars have both low Eddington rates…
The masses of the black holes powering quasars represent a fundamental parameter of active galaxies. Estimates of quasar black hole masses using single-epoch spectra are quite uncertain, and require quantitative improvement. We recently identified a correction for C IV $λ$1549-based scaling relationships used to estimate quasar black hole masses that relies on the continuum-subtracted peak flux ratio of the ultraviolet emission-line blend Si IV + OIV] (the $λ$1400 feature) to that of C IV. This parameter correlates with the suite of associated quasar spectral properties collectively known as "…
Quasar luminosity function (QLF) shows the active galactic nucleus (AGN) demography as a result of the combination of the growth and the evolution of black holes, galaxies, and dark matter halos along the cosmic time. The recent wide and deep surveys have improved the census of high-redshift quasars, making it possible to construct reliable ultraviolet (UV) QLFs at $2\lesssim z\lesssim6$ down to $M_{1450}=-23$ mag. By parameterizing these up-to-date observed UV QLFs that are the most extensive in both luminosity and survey area coverage at a given redshift, we show that the UV QLF has a univer…
The physical mechanisms of the quasar ultraviolet (UV)-optical variability are not well understood despite the long history of observations. Recently, Dexter & Agol presented a model of quasar UV-optical variability, which assumes large local temperature fluctuations in the quasar accretion discs. This inhomogeneous accretion disc model is claimed to describe not only the single-band variability amplitude, but also microlensing size constraints and the quasar composite spectral shape. In this work, we examine the validity of the inhomogeneous accretion disc model in the light of quasar UV-opti…
We present spectra of six luminous quasars at z ~ 2, covering rest wavelengths 1600-3200 A. The fluxes of the UV Fe II emission lines and Mg II 2798 doublet, the line widths of Mg II, and the 3000 A luminosity were obtained from the spectra. These quantities were compared with those of low-redshift quasars at z = 0.06 - 0.55 studied by Tsuzuki et al. In a plot of the Fe II(UV)/Mg II flux ratio as a function of the cental black hole mass, Fe II(UV)/Mg II in our z ~ 2 quasars is systematically greater than in the low-redshift quasars. We confermed that luminosity is not responsible for this exce…
High-redshift quasars typically have their redshift determined from rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) emission lines. However, these lines, and more specifically the prominent C IV $λ1549$ emission line, are typically blueshifted yielding highly uncertain redshift estimates compared to redshifts determined from rest-frame optical emission lines. We present near-infrared spectroscopy of 18 luminous quasars at $2.15 < z < 3.70$ that allows us to obtain reliable systemic redshifts for these sources. Together with near-infrared spectroscopy of an archival sample of 44 quasars with comparable luminositie…
