It is well known that Kasner-type cosmologies provide a useful framework for analyzing the three-dimensional anisotropic expansion because of the simplification of the anisotropic dynamics. In this paper relativistic multi-fluid Kasner-type scenarios are studied. We first consider the general case of a superposition of two ideal cosmic fluids, as well as the particular cases of non-interacting and interacting ones, by introducing a phenomenological coupling function $q(t)$. For two-fluid cosmological scenarios there exist only cosmological scaling solutions, while for three-fluid configurations there exist not only cosmological scaling ones, but also more general solutions. In the case of triply interacting cosmic fluids we can have energy transfer from two fluids to a third one, or energy transfer from one cosmic fluid to the other two. It is shown that by requiring the positivity of energy densities there always is a matter component which violates the dominant energy condition in this kind of anisotropic cosmological scenarios.
We prove the existence of a class of perfect-fluid cosmologies with polarised Gowdy symmetry and a Kasner-like singularity. These solutions of the Einstein equations depend on four free functions of one space coordinate and are constructed by solving a system of Fuchsian equations.
We prove the existence of a class of plane symmetric perfect-fluid cosmologies with a (-1/3, 2/3, 2/3) Kasner-like singularity. These solutions of the Einstein equations depend on two smooth functions of one space coordinate. They are constructed by solving a symmetric hyperbolic system of Fuchsian equations.
In a viscous Bianchi type I metric of the Kasner form, it is well known that it is not possible to describe an anisotropic physical model of the universe, which satisfies the second law of thermodynamics and the dominant energy condition (DEC) in Einstein's theory of gravity. We examine this problem in scalar-tensor theories of gravity. In this theory we show that it is possible to describe the growth of entropy, keeping the thermodynamics and the dominant energy condition.
We extend the induced matter model, previously applied to a variety of isotropic cases, to a generalization of Bianchi type-I anisotropic cosmologies. The induced matter model is a 5D Kaluza-Klein approach in which assumptions of compactness are relaxed for the fifth coordinate, leading to extra geometric terms. One interpretation of these extra terms is to identify them as an ``induced matter'' contribution to the stress-energy tensor. In similar spirit, we construct a five dimensional metric in which the spatial slices possess Bianchi type-I geometry. We find a set of solutions for the five …
We show that in multidimensional gravity vector fields completely determine the structure and properties of singularity. It turns out that in the presence of a vector field the oscillatory regime exists for any number of spatial dimensions and for all homogeneous models. We derive the Poincaré return map associated to the Kasner indexes and fix the rules according to which the Kasner vectors rotate. In correspondence to a 4-dimensional space time, the oscillatory regime here constructed overlap the usual Belinski-Khalatnikov-Liftshitz one.

We produce numerical evidence that the joint spike transitions between Kasner eras of $G_2$ cosmologies are described by the non-orthogonally transitive $G_2$ spike solution. A new matching procedure is developed for this purpose.

We consider spatially homogeneous models in Hořava-Lifshitz (HL) gravity that perturbs General Relativity (GR) by a parameter $v\in (0,1)$ such that GR occurs at $v=1/2$. We prove that the induced Kasner map is chaotic for a broad class of modified HL gravity models, when $v\in (0,1/2)$, despite the fact that the Kasner map is multivalued in such subcritical regime.
A condition of supersymmetric cosmological solutions of simple (N=1) supergravity is formulated in the classical case. As an application we prove that supersymmetry is spontaneously broken in Friedmann-Robertson-Walker type cosmologies as well as in the Kasner universe, except for the Minkowski space.

Methods of dynamical systems analysis are used to show rigorously that the presence of a magnetic field orthogonal to the two commuting Killing vector fields in any spatially homogeneous Bianchi type VI_0 vacuum solution to Einstein's equation changes the evolution toward the singularity from convergent to oscillatory. In particular, it is shown that the alpha-limit set (for time direction that puts the singularity in the past) of any of these magnetic solutions contains at least two sequential Kasner points of the BKL sequence and the orbit of the transition solution between them. One of the …
We consider spatially homogeneous Hořava-Lifshitz (HL) models that perturb General Relativity (GR) by a parameter $v\in (0,1)$ such that GR occurs at $v=1/2$. We describe the dynamics for the extremal case $v=0$, which possess the usual Bianchi hierarchy: type $\mathrm{I}$ (Kasner circle of equilibria), type $\mathrm{II}$ (heteroclinics that induce the Kasner map) and type $\mathrm{VI_0},\mathrm{VII_0}$ (further heteroclinics). For type $\mathrm{VIII}$ and $\mathrm{IX}$, we use a computer-assisted approach to prove the existence of periodic orbits which are far from the Mixmaster attractor and…
A combination of analytic and numerical methods has yielded a clear understanding of the approach to the singularity in spatially inhomogeneous cosmologies. Strong support is found for the longstanding claim by Belinskii, Khalatnikov, and Lifshitz that the collapse is dominated by local Kasner or Mixmaster behavior. The Method of Consistent Potentials is used to establish the consistency of asymptotic velocity term dominance (AVTD) (local Kasner behavior) in that no terms in Einstein's equations will grow exponentially when the VTD solution, obtained by neglecting all terms containing spatial …
Bianchi type I and type IX ('Mixmaster') geometries are investigated within the framework of Hořava-Witten cosmology. We consider the models for which the fifth coordinate is a $S^1/Z_2$ orbifold while the four coordinates are such that the 3-space is homogeneous and has geometry of Bianchi type I or IX while the rest six dimensions have already been compactified on a Calabi-Yau space. In particular, we study Kasner-type solutions of the Bianchi I field equations and discuss Kasner asymptotics of Bianchi IX field equations. We are able to recover the isotropic 3-space solutions found by Lukas …
We explore a correspondence between Melvin magnetic fluxtubes and anisotropic cosmological solutions, which we call `Melvin cosmologies'. The correspondence via analytic continuation provides useful information in both directions. Solution generating techniques known on the fluxtube side can also be used for generating cosmological backgrounds. Melvin cosmologies interpolate between different limiting Kasner behaviors at early and late times. This has an analogue on the fluxtube side between limiting Levi-Civita behavior at small and large radii. We construct generalized Melvin fluxtubes and c…
We consider a braneworld model in which an anisotropic brane is embedded in a dilatonic background. We solve the background solutions and study the behavior of the perturbations when the universe evolves from an inflationary Kasner phase to a Minkowski phase. We calculate the massless mode spectrum, and find that it does not differ from what expected in standard four-dimensional cosmological models. We then evaluate the spectrum of both light (ultrarelativistic) and heavy (nonrelativistic) massive modes, and find that, at high energies, there can be a strong enhancement of the Kaluza-Klein spe…
We present solution generating techniques which permit to construct exact inhomogeneous and anisotropic cosmological solutions to a four-dimensional low energy limit of string theory containing non-minimally interacting electromagnetic and dilaton fields. Some explicit homogeneous and inhomogeneous cosmological solutions are constructed. For example, inhomogeneous exact solutions presenting Gowdy - type EMD universe are obtained. The asymptotic behaviour of the solutions is investigated. The asymptotic form of the metric near the initial singularity has a spatially varying Kasner form. The cha…
We consider the precession of a Dirac particle spin in some anisotropic Bianchi universes. This effect is present already in the Bianchi-I universe. We discuss in some detail the geodesics and the spin precession for both the Kasner and the Heckmann-Schucking solutions. In the Bianchi-IX universe the spin precession acquires the chaotic character due to the stochasticity of the oscillatory approach to the cosmological singularity. The related helicity flip of fermions in the very early Universe may produce the sterile particles contributing to dark matter.
In this paper we give, for the first time, a complete description of the dynamics of tilted spatially homogeneous cosmologies of Bianchi type II. The source is assumed to be a perfect fluid with equation of state $p = (γ-1) μ$, where $γ$ is a constant. We show that unless the perfect fluid is stiff, the tilt destabilizes the Kasner solutions, leading to a Mixmaster-like initial singularity, with the tilt being dynamically significant. At late times the tilt becomes dynamically negligible unless the equation of state parameter satisfies $γ> {10/7}$. We also find that the tilt does not destabili…
The behavior near the initial singular state of the anisotropy parameter of the arbitrary type, homogeneous and anisotropic Bianchi models is considered in the framework of the brane world cosmological models. The matter content on the brane is assumed to be an isotropic perfect cosmological fluid, obeying a barotropic equation of state. To obtain the value of the anisotropy parameter at an arbitrary moment an evolution equation is derived, describing the dynamics of the anisotropy as a function of the volume scale factor of the Universe. The general solution of this equation can be obtained i…
We analyze the global dynamics of Bianchi type I solutions of the Einstein equations with anisotropic matter. The matter model is not specified explicitly but only through a set of mild and physically motivated assumptions; thereby our analysis covers matter models as different from each other as, e.g., collisionless matter, elastic matter and magnetic fields. The main result we prove is the existence of an `anisotropy classification' for the asymptotic behaviour of Bianchi type I cosmologies. The type of asymptotic behaviour of generic solutions is determined by one single parameter that desc…
We present nonsingular cosmological models with a variable cosmological term described by the second-rank symmetric tensor $Λ_{mn}$ evolving from $Λg_{mn}$ to $λg_{mn}$ with $λ< Λ$. All $Λ_{mn}$ dominated cosmologies belong to Lemaitre type models for an anisotropic perfect fluid. The expansion starts from a nonsingular nonsimultaneous de Sitter bang, with $Λ$ on the scale responsible for the earliest accelerated expansion, which is followed by an anisotropic Kasner type stage. For a certain class of observers these models can be also identified as Kantowski-Sachs models with regular R regions…
We find the group of symmetry transformations generated by interacting fluids in spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) spacetime which links cosmologies with the same scale factor {\it (identity)} or with scale factors $a$ and $a^{-1}$ {\it (duality)}. There exists a duality between contracting and superaccelerated expanding scenarios associated with {\it (phantom)} cosmologies. We investigate the action of this symmetry group on self-interacting minimally(conformally) coupled quintessence and $k$-essence cosmologies.

We examine the effects of spatial inhomogeneities on irrotational anisotropic cosmologies by looking at the average properties of anisotropic pressure-free models. Adopting the Buchert scheme, we recast the averaged scalar equations in Bianchi-type form and close the standard system by introducing a propagation formula for the average shear magnitude. We then investigate the evolution of anisotropic average vacuum models and those filled with pressureless matter. In the latter case we show that the backreaction effects can modify the familiar Kasner-like singularity and potentially remove Mixm…
Some spatially homogeneous Bianchi type I cosmological models filled with homogeneous ``electric'' $p$-form fields are shown to mimic the never-ending oscillatory behaviour of generic string cosmologies established recently. The validity of the ``Kasner-free-flights plus collisions-on-potential-walls'' picture is also illustrated in the case of known, non-chaotic, superstring solutions.
In this paper we show that by considering a universe dominated by two interacting components a superaccelerated expansion can be obtained from a decelerated one by applying a dual transformation that leaves the Einstein's field equations invariant.

Aspects of superstring cosmology are reviewed with an emphasis on the cosmological implications of duality symmetries in the theory. The string effective actions are summarized and toroidal compactification to four dimensions reviewed. Global symmetries that arise in the compactification are discussed and the duality relationships between the string effective actions are then highlighted. Higher-dimensional Kasner cosmologies are presented and interpreted in both string and Einstein frames, and then given in dimensionally reduced forms. String cosmologies containing both non-trivial Neveu-Schw…
We solve isotropic, homogeneous cosmological models containing a self-interacting scalar field. Calculations are performed in four and two-dimensional spacetimes. We find several exact solutions that have an inflationary regime or has a final Friedmann stage. Also their asymptotically stability is studied.
The implications from the existence of a proper Homothetic Vector Field (HVF) on the dynamics of vacuum anisotropic models in $F(R)$ gravitational theory are studied. The fact that \emph{every} Spatially Homogeneous vacuum model is equivalent, formally, with a "flux" -free anisotropic fluid model in standard gravity and the induced power-law form of the functional $F(R)$ due to self-similarity enable us to close the system of equations. We found some new exact anisotropic solutions that arise as fixed points in the associated dynamical system. The non-existence of Kasner-like (Bianchi type I) …
Exact models for Bianchi VI0 spacetimes with multiple scalar fields with exponential potentials have been derived and analysed. It has been shown that these solutions, when they exist, attract neighbouring solutions in the two cases corresponding to interacting and non-interacting fields. Unlike the results obtained in a previous work dealing with the late-time inflationary behaviour of Bianchi VI0 cosmologies, the knowledge of exact solutions has made possible to study in detail the occurrence of inflation before the asymptotic regime. As happened in preceding works, here as well inflation is…

Two families of exact simple solutions of Einstein field equations for inhomogeneous stiff cosmologies are presented. The method to obtain the solutions is based on the introduction of auxiliary functions in order to cast the Einstein equations in such a way that can be explicitly integrated. Now, despite of the equations are mathematically equivalent to the equations obtained when the source of matter is a scalar field, is worth to mention that the source that we consider is not a scalar field but a perfect fluid with the stiff equation of state. The obtained solutions are expressed in terms …
For space-times with two spacelike isometries, we present infinite hierarchies of exact solutions of the Einstein and Einstein--Maxwell equations as represented by their Ernst potentials. This hierarchy contains three arbitrary rational functions of an auxiliary complex parameter. They are constructed using the so called `monodromy transform' approach and our new method for the solution of the linear singular integral equation form of the reduced Einstein equations. The solutions presented, which describe inhomogeneous cosmological models or gravitational and electromagnetic waves and their in…
We investigate the case of two interacting fluids in homogeneous and isotropic cosmologies with a non-linear interaction term. The interaction term avoids the unrealistic form generally used in the literature, beginning with Tolman, in which the interaction is zero when the Hubble parameter vanishes. A variety of exact solutions for the scale factor are found and describe a range of new behaviors. We also extend the analysis of possible cosmological solutions with interacting fluids when curvature is taken into consideration. We use an example of energy exchange between radiation and scalar fi…
We study Bianchi cosmologies in the ghost-free bigravity theory assuming both metrics to be homogeneous and anisotropic, of the Bianchi class A, which includes types I,II,VI$_0$,VII$_0$,VIII, and IX. We assume the universe to contain a radiation and a non-relativistic matter, with the cosmological term mimicked by the graviton mass. We find that, for generic initial values leading to a late-time self-acceleration, the universe approaches a state with non-vanishing anisotropies. The anisotropy contribution to the total energy density decreases much slower than in General Relativity and shows th…
We study the dynamics near finite-time singularities of flat isotropic universes filled with two interacting but otherwise arbitrary perfect fluids. The overall dynamical picture reveals a variety of asymptotic solutions valid locally around the spacetime singularity. We find the attractor of all solutions with standard decay, and for `phantom' matter asymptotically at early times. We give a number of special asymptotic solutions describing universes collapsing to zero size and others ending at a big rip singularity. We also find a very complicated singularity corresponding with a logarithmic …
We present a phase-space analysis of the qualitative dynamics cosmologies where dark matter exchanges energy with the vacuum component. We find fixed points corresponding to power-law solutions where the different components remain a constant fraction of the total energy density and given an existence condition for any fixed points with nonvanishing energy transfer. For some interaction models we find novel fixed points in the presence of a third noninteracting fluid with constant equation of state, such as radiation, where the interacting vacuum+matter tracks the evolution of the third fluid,…
In the context of theories of Kaluza-Klein type, with a large extra dimension, we study self-similar cosmological models in 5D that are homogeneous, anisotropic and spatially flat. The "ladder" to go between the physics in 5D and 4D is provided by Campbell-Maagard's embedding theorems. We show that the 5-dimensional field equations $R_{AB} = 0$ determine the form of the similarity variable. There are three different possibilities: homothetic, conformal and "wave-like" solutions in 5D. We derive the most general homothetic and conformal solutions to the 5D field equations. They require the extr…
We study Bianchi I type brane cosmologies with scalar matter self-interacting through combinations of exponential potentials. Such models correspond in some cases to inflationary universes. We discuss the conditions for accelerated expansion to occur, and pay particular attention to the influence of extra dimensions and anisotropy. Our results show that the associated effects evolve in such a way that they become negligible in the late time limit, those related to the anisotropy disappearing earlier. This study focuses mainly on single field models, but we also consider a generalization yieldi…
We investigate a mechanism that generates the exact solutions of scalar field cosmologies in a unified way. The procedure investigated here permits to recover allmost all known solutions, and allows one to derive new solutions as well. In particular, we derive and discuss one novel solution defined in terms of the Lambert function. The solutions are organized in a classification which depends on the choice of a generating function which we have denoted by $x(ϕ)$ that reflects the underlying thermodynamics of the model. We also analyse and discuss the existence of form invariances and dualities…
In this article we investigate and develop specific aspects of Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) scalar field cosmologies related to the interpretation that canonical and phantom scalar field sources may be interpreted as cosmological configurations with a mixture of two interacting barotropic perfect fluids: a matter component $ρ_1(t)$ with a stiff equation of state ($p_1=ρ_1$), and an "effective vacuum energy" $ρ_2(t)$ with a cosmological constant equation of state ($p_2=-ρ_2$). An important characteristic of this alternative equivalent formulation in the framework of interacting cosmologies …
Scalar field cosmologies with a generalized harmonic potential are investigated in flat and negatively curved Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker and Bianchi I metrics. An interaction between the scalar field and matter is considered. Asymptotic methods and averaging theory are used to obtain relevant information about the solution space. In this approach, the Hubble parameter plays the role of a time-dependent perturbation parameter which controls the magnitude of the error between full-system and time-averaged solutions as it decreases. Our approach is used to show that full and time-average…
We present a new generating algorithm to construct exact non static solutions of the Einstein field equations with two-dimensional inhomogeneity. Infinite dimensional families of $G_1$ inhomogeneous solutions with a self interacting scalar field, or alternatively with perfect fluid, can be constructed using this algorithm. Some families of solutions and the applications of the algorithm are discussed.
In this paper we explore possible extensions of Interacting Dark Energy cosmologies, where Dark Energy and Dark Matter interact non-gravitationally with one another. In particular, we focus on the neutrino sector, analyzing the effect of both neutrino masses and the effective number of neutrino species. We consider the Planck 2018 legacy release data combined with several other cosmological probes, finding no evidence for new physics in the dark radiation sector. The current neutrino constraints from cosmology should be therefore regarded as robust, as they are not strongly dependent on the da…
We study the observational viability of coupled quintessence models with their expansion and growth histories matched to modified gravity cosmologies. We find that for a Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati model which has been fitted to observations, the matched interacting dark energy models are observationally disfavoured. We also study the distinguishability of interacting dark energy models matched to scalar-tensor theory cosmologies and show that it is not always possible to find a physical interacting dark energy model which shares their expansion and growth histories.
We investigate in detail the qualitative behaviour of the class of Bianchi type B spatially homogeneous cosmological models in which the matter content is composed of two non-interacting components; the first component is described by a barotropic fluid having a gamma-law equation of state, whilst the second is a non-interacting scalar field (phi) with an exponential potential V=Lambda exp(k phi). In particular, we study the asymptotic properties of the models both at early and late times, paying particular attention on whether the models isotropize (and inflate) to the future, and we discuss …
Up-to-date cosmological data analyses have shown that \textit{(a)} a closed universe is preferred by the Planck data at more than $99\%$ CL, and \textit{(b)} interacting scenarios offer a very compelling solution to the Hubble constant tension. In light of these two recent appealing scenarios, we consider here an interacting dark matter-dark energy model with a non-zero spatial curvature component and a freely varying dark energy equation of state in both the quintessential and phantom regimes. When considering Cosmic Microwave Background data only, a phantom and closed universe can perfectly …
Several isotropic, homogeneous cosmological models containing a self-interacting minimally coupled scalar field, a perfect fluid source and cosmological constant are solved. New exact, asymptotically stable solutions with an inflationary regime or a final Friedmann stage are found for some simple, interesting potentials. It is shown that the fluid and the curvature may determine how these models evolve for large times.
We present the study of exact inhomogeneous cosmological solutions to a four-dimensional low energy limit of string theory containing non-minimal interacting electromagnetic, dilaton and axion fields. We analyze Einstein-Rosen solutions of Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton-axion equations and show, by explicitly taken the asymptotic limits, that they have asymptotically velocity-term dominated (AVTD) singularities.
In this thesis we first apply the 1+3 covariant description of general relativity to analyze n-fluid Friedmann-Lemaitre (FL) cosmologies; that is, homogeneous and isotropic cosmologies whose matter-energy content consists of n non-interacting fluids. We are motivated to study FL models of this type as observations suggest the physical universe is closely described by a FL model with a matter content consisting of radiation, dust and a cosmological constant. Secondly, we use the 1+3 covariant description to analyse scalar, vector and tensor perturbations of FL cosmologies containing a perfect f…
We study curved isotropic cosmologies filled with two interacting fluids near their time singularities. We find that a number of these universes asymptote to flat limits in the sense that their asymptotic properties become indistinguishable from those of flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker models on approach to the singularity along any asymptotic direction. In particular, there are no essential singularities in these models. We discuss connections of this result with possible extensions of the cosmic no hair theorem to the case of two interacting fluids, and also provide links to a quantum cosmol…
