For a symmetric bridge coupled to infinite leads, in the presence of a dipole-coupled external ac-field with harmonic mixing, we solve the Schrödinger equation in the time-domain using open boundary conditions as well as in the energy-domain using Floquet scattering theory. As this potential breaks parity and generalized parity, we find a non-vanishing average current. We then optimize the relative amplitude ratio between the fundamental and the second harmonic leading to a maximum in the pump current.
From spin pumping measurements in Ta/Py devices for different thicknesses of Ta, we determine the spin Hall angle to be 0.021 - 0.033 and spin diffusion length to be 8 nm in Ta. We have also studied the effect of changing the properties of non-magnet/ferromagnet interface by adding a Cu interlayer. The experimental results show that the effective spin mixing conductance increases in the presence of Cu interlayer for Ta/Cu/Py devices, whereas it decreases in Pt/Cu/Py devices. Our findings allow the tunability of the spin pumping efficiency by adding a thin interlayer at the non-magnet/ferromagn…
Magnetic insulators are promising materials for the development of energy-efficient spintronics. Unlike metallic counterparts, the magnetic insulators are characterized by imaginary part of the interfacial spin mixing conductance as well in a bilayer with heavy metals and it is responsible for the field-like toque in spin-orbit torque devices. Here, we study the underlying theoretical constructs and develop a general strategy to determine the complex spin mixing conductance from the experimental results of ferromagnetic resonance and spin pumping. The results show that the imaginary part of th…
We develop a concept of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) based four-wave mixing (4WM), in which a laser-launched evanescent SPP field is utilized as a coherent pumping source to involve directly in a nonlinear 4WM process at the dielectric/metal interface. Conversion efficiency of the resulting 4WM radiation is expected to be dramatically increased due to the local-field enhancement effect. Feasibility of implementing this concept at the air/gold film and graphene flake/gold film interfaces is further examined by numerical simulations. The concept shows intriguing promise for applications in …
"Spin pumping" is the injection of spin angular momentum by a time-dependent magnetization into an adjacent normal metal proportional to the spin mixing conductance. We study the role of electrostatic interactions in the form of crystal fields on the pumped spin currents generated by insulators with exchange-coupled local moments at the interface to a metal. The crystal field is shown to render the spin currents anisotropic, which implies that the spin mixing conductance of insulator|normal metal bilayers depends on crystal cut and orientation. We interpret the interface "effective field" (ima…
Single-parameter adiabatic charge pumping, induced by a nearby radio-frequency antenna, is achieved in suspended carbon nanotubes close to the mechanical resonance. The charge pumping is due to an important dynamic adjustment of the oscillating motion to the antenna signal and it is different from the mechanism active in the two-parameter pumping. Finally, the second harmonic oscillator response shows an interesting relationship with the first harmonic that should be experimentally observed.
We propose a two-dimensional (2D) version of Thouless pumping that can be realized by using ultracold atoms in optical lattices. To be specific, we consider a 2D square lattice tight-binding model with an obliquely introduced superlattice. It is demonstrated that quantized particle transport occurs in this system, and that the transport is expressed as a solution of a Diophantine equation. This topological nature can be understood by mapping the Hamiltonian to a three-dimensional (3D) cubic lattice model with a homogeneous magnetic field. We also propose a continuum model with obliquely introd…
The dependence of the spin pumping efficiency and the spin mixing conductance on the surface processing of yttrium iron garnet (YIG) before the platinum (Pt) deposition has been investigated quantitatively. The ferromagnetic resonance driven spin pumping injects a spin polarized current into the Pt layer, which is transformed into an electromotive force by the inverse spin Hall effect. Our experiments show that the spin pumping effect indeed strongly depends on the YIG/Pt interface condition. We measure an enhancement of the inverse spin Hall voltage and the spin mixing conductance of more tha…
We present a comprehensive study of the temperature (T) dependence of the longitudinal spin Seebeck effect (LSSE) in Pt/EuO_{1-x} and Pt/La2NiMnO6 (LNMO) hybrid structures across their Curie temperatures (Tc). Both systems host ferromagnetic interaction below Tc, hence present optimal conditions for testing magnon spin current based theories against ferrimagnetic YIG. Notably, we observe an anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) generated voltage in bare EuO_{1-x}, however, we find LSSE predominates the thermal signals in the bilayers with Pt. The T-dependence of the LSSE in small T-range near Tc could…
The field of THz spintronics is a novel direction in the research field of spintronics that combines magnetism with optical physics and ultrafast photonics. The experimental scheme of the field involves the use of femtosecond laser pulses to trigger ultrafast spin and charge dynamics in bilayers composed of ferromagnetic (FM) and non-magnetic (NM) thin films where the NM layer features a strong spin-orbit coupling. The key technological and scientific challenges of THz spintronic emitters is to increase their intensity and frequency bandwidth. To achieve this the control of the source of the r…
The nonlinear response of electrons (holes) in doped graphene on ac pumping is considered theoretically for the frequency region above the energy relaxation rate but below the momentum and carrier-carrier scattering rates. Temporally-dependent heating of electrons by a strong ac field, which is described within the energy balance approach, leads to an effective generation of high-order harmonics. The efficiency of up-conversion of the 1 mm radiation into the third harmonic by a single-layer graphene is about 10^{-7} at pumping level ~100 kW/cm^2, room temperature, and concentration ~5 x 10^{11…
Spin currents can be obtained through adiabatic pumping by means of electrical gating only. This is possible by making use of the tunability of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling in semiconductor heterostructures. We demonstrate the principles of this effect by considering a single-channel wire with a constriction. We also consider realistic structures, consisting of several open channels where subband spin-mixing and disorder are present, and we confirm our predictions. Two different ways to detect the spin-pumping effect, either using ferromagnetic leads or applying a magnetic field, are discuss…
We theoretically study spin pumping from a layered van der Waals antiferromagnet in its canted ground state into an adjacent normal metal. We find that the resulting dc spin pumping current bears contributions along all spin directions. Our analysis allows for detecting intra- and cross-sublattice spin-mixing conductances via measuring the two in-plane spin current components. We further show that sublattice symmetry-breaking Gilbert damping can be realized via interface engineering and induces a dissipative coupling between the optical and acoustic magnon modes. This realizes magnon level att…
We show that harmonic frequency mixing in quantum dots coupled to two leads under the influence of time-dependent voltages of different frequency is dominated by interaction effects. This offers a unique and direct spectroscopic tool to access correlations, and holds promise for efficient frequency mixing in nano-devices. Explicit results are provided for an Anderson dot and for a molecular level with phonon-mediated interactions.
Due to its low intrinsic damping, Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ and its substituted variations are often used for ferromagnetic layer at spin pumping experiment. Spin pumping is an interfacial spin current generation in the interface of ferromagnet and non-magnetic metal, governed by spin mixing conductance parameter $G^{\uparrow\downarrow}$. $G^{\uparrow\downarrow}$ has been shown to enhance the damping of the ferromagnetic layer. The theory suggested that the effect of $G^{\uparrow\downarrow}$ on gyromagnetic ratio only come from its negligible imaginary part. In this article, we show that the differe…
On the basis of the Schwinger-Keldysh formalism, we have closely investigated the temperature dependence of quantum spin pumping by electron spin resonance. We have clarified that three-magnon splittings excite non-zero modes of magnons and characterize the temperature dependence of quantum spin pumping. Our theoretical result qualitatively agrees with the experiment by Czeschka et al. that the mixing conductance is little influenced by temperature [F. D. Czeschka et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., 107, 046601 (2011)].
Quantum pumping holds great potential for future applications in micro- and nanotechnology. Its main feature, dissipationless charge transport, is theoretically possible via several different mechanisms. However, since no unambiguous verification has been demonstrated experimentally, the question of finding a viable mechanism for pumping remains open. Here we study quantum pumping in an one dimensional electron waveguide with a single time-dependent barrier. The quantum pumping of electrons using a potential barrier whose height and position are harmonically varied is analyzed analytically and…
We investigate spin pumping phenomena in polycrystalline CoFeB/Pt and CoFeB/Ta bilayers and the correlation between the effective spin mixing conductance $g^{\uparrow\downarrow}_{\rm eff}$ and the obtained voltages generated by the spin-to-charge current conversion via the inverse spin Hall effect in the Pt and Ta layers. For this purpose we measure the in-plane angular dependence of the generated voltages on the external static magnetic field and we apply a model to separate the spin pumping signal from the one generated by the spin rectification effect in the magnetic layer. Our results reve…
Spin transport efficiency in heterostructures depends on the spin conductances of each constituent and their interfaces. We report a comparative study of spin pumping in Y3Fe5O12/Cu/Pt and Y3Fe5O12/Cu/W trilayers. Surprisingly, the insertion of a Cu interlayer between Y3Fe5O12 and W substantially improves (over a factor of 4) the spin current injection into W while similar insertion between Y3Fe5O12 and Pt degrades the spin current. This is a consequence of a much improved Y3Fe5O12/Cu spin mixing conductance relative to that for Y3Fe5O12/W. This result implies the possibility of engineered het…
Based on the scattering matrix approach, we systematically investigate the anharmonic effect of the pumped current in double-barrier structures with adiabatic time-modulation of two sinusoidal AC driven potential heights. The pumped current as a function of the phase difference between the two driven potentials looks like to be sinusoidal, but actually it contains sine functions of double and more phase difference. It is found that this kind of anharmonic effect of the pumped current is determined combinedly by the Be rry curvature and parameter variation loop trajectory. Therefore small ratio…

The spin pumping mechanism and associated interfacial Gilbert damping are demonstrated in ion-beam sputtered Co2FeAl (CFA) /Mo bilayer thin films employing ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy. The dependence of the net spin current transportation on Mo layer thickness, 0 to 10 nm, and the enhancement of the net effective Gilbert damping are reported. The experimental data has been analyzed using spin pumping theory in terms of spin current pumped through the ferromagnet /nonmagnetic metal interface to deduce the effective spin mixing conductance and the spin-diffusion length, which are estima…
We apply the recently-developed partition-free time-dependent Landauer-Büttiker (TD-LB) formalism to the study of periodically-driven transport in graphene nanoribbons (GNR). When an AC driving is applied, this formalism can be used to prove generic conditions for the existence of a non-zero DC component of the net current (pump current) through the molecular device. Time-reversal symmetry breaking in the driving field is investigated and found to be insufficient for a non-zero pump current. We then derive explicit formulas for the current response to a particular biharmonic bias. We calculate…
The Edelstein effect caused by the pristine surface states of three-dimensional topological insulators is investigated by means of a semiclassical approach. The combined effect of random impurity scattering and the spin-momentum locking of the gapless Dirac cone yields a current-induced surface spin accumulation independent from chemical potential and temperature. In a nearby ferromagnet that does not make direct contact with the topological insulator, the bound state nature of the pristine surface state causes a spin-transfer torque that is entirely field-like, whose magnitude is highly influ…
The multi-level system $^{55}$Mn$^{2+}$ is used to generate two pseudo-harmonic level systems, as representations of the same electronic sextuplet at different nuclear spin projections. The systems are coupled using a forbidden nuclear transition induced by the crystalline anisotropy. We demonstrate Rabi oscillations between the two representations in conditions similar to two coupled quasi-harmonic quantum oscillators. Rabi oscillations are performed at a detuned pumping frequency which matches energy difference between electro-nuclear states of different oscillators. We measure a coupling st…
We discuss an effect of dc current and dc voltage (stopping bias) generation in a semiconductor superlattice subjected by an ac electric field and its phase-shifted n-th harmonic. In the low field limit, we find a simple dependence of dc voltage on a strength, frequency, and relative phase of mixing harmonics for an arbitrary even value of n. We show that the generated dc voltage has a maximum when a frequency of ac field is of the order of a scattering constant of electrons in a superlattice. This means that for typical semiconductor superlattices at room temperature operating in the THz freq…

Based on the spin-pumping theory and first-principles calculations, the spin-mixing conductance (SMC) is theoretically studied for Pt/Permalloy (Ni$_{81}$Fe$_{19}$, Py) junctions. We evaluate the SMC for ideally clean Pt/Py junctions and examine the effects of interface randomness. We find that the SMC is generally enhanced in the presence of interface roughness as compared to the ideally clean junctions. Our estimated SMC is in good quantitative agreement with the recent experiment for Pt/Py junctions. We propose possible routes to increase the SMC in Pt/Py junctions by depositing a foreign m…
We observe and analyze tunable relaxation of a pure spin current by an antiferromagnet in spin-valves. This is achieved by carefully controlling the angle between a resonantly excited ferromagnetic layer pumping the spin current and the Néel vector of the antiferromagnetic layer. The effect is observed as an angle-dependent spin-pumping contribution to the ferromagnetic resonance linewidth. An interplay between spin-mixing conductance and, often disregarded, longitudinal spin conductance is found to underlie our observations, which is in agreement with a recent prediction for related ferromagn…
In a magnetic multilayer, magnetizations can be manipulated by spin transfer torque. Both spin transfer torque and its reciprocal effect, spin pumping, are governed by spin mixing conductance. The magnitude of spin mixing conductance at the interface of nearly magnetic metal has been theoretically shown to be enhanced by electron-electron interaction. However, experiments show both increasing and decreasing values of spin mixing conductance for metals with larger electron-electron interaction. Here we take into account the effect of electron-electron interaction on the screening of the Coulomb…
