We investigate the collective dynamics of bursting neurons on clustered network. The clustered network is composed of subnetworks each presenting a small-world property, and in a given subnetwork each neuron has a probability to be connected to the other subnetworks. We give bounds for the critical coupling strength to obtain global burst synchronization in terms of the network structure, i.e., intracluster and intercluster probabilities connections. As the heterogeneity in the network is reduced the network global synchronization is improved. We show that the transitions to global synchrony may be abrupt or smooth depending on the intercluster probability.
Many networks of physical and biological interest are characterized by a long-range coupling mediated by a chemical which diffuses through a medium in which oscillators are embedded. We considered a one-dimensional model for this effect for which the diffusion is fast enough so as to be implemented through a coupling whose intensity decays exponentially with the lattice distance. In particular, we analyzed the bursting synchronization of neurons described by two timescales (spiking and bursting activity), and coupled through such a long-range interaction network. One of the advantages of the m…
We investigate the entrainment of a neuron model exhibiting a chaotic spiking-bursting behavior in response to a weak periodic force. This model exhibits two types of oscillations with different characteristic time scales, namely, long and short time scales. Several types of phase synchronization are observed, such as 1 : 1 phase locking between a single spike and one period of the force and 1 : l phase locking between the period of slow oscillation underlying bursts and l periods of the force. Moreover, spiking-bursting oscillations with chaotic firing patterns can be synchronized with the pe…
Bursting neurons fire rapid sequences of action potential spikes followed by a quiescent period. The basic dynamical mechanism of bursting is the slow currents that modulate a fast spiking activity caused by rapid ionic currents. Minimal models of bursting neurons must include both effects. We considered one of these models and its relation with a generalized Kuramoto model, thanks to the definition of a geometrical phase for bursting and a corresponding frequency. We considered neuronal networks with different connection topologies and investigated the transition from a non-synchronized to a …
We are interested in characterization of population synchronization of bursting neurons which exhibit both the slow bursting and the fast spiking timescales, in contrast to spiking neurons. Population synchronization may be well visualized in the raster plot of neural spikes which can be obtained in experiments. The instantaneous population firing rate (IPFR) $R(t)$, which may be directly obtained from the raster plot of spikes, is often used as a realistic collective quantity describing population behaviors in both the computational and the experimental neuroscience. For the case of spiking n…
A simple model that replicates the dynamics of spiking and spiking-bursting activity of real biological neurons is proposed. The model is a two-dimensional map which contains one fast and one slow variable. The mechanisms behind generation of spikes, bursts of spikes, and restructuring of the map behavior are explained using phase portrait analysis. The dynamics of two coupled maps which model the behavior of two electrically coupled neurons is discussed. Synchronization regimes for spiking and bursting activity of these maps are studied as a function of coupling strength. It is demonstrated t…
This study is focused on the mechanisms of rhythmogenesis and robustness of anti-phase bursting in half-center-oscillators (HCOs) consisting of two reciprocally inhibitory coupled neurons. There is a growing body of experimental evidence that a HCO is a universal building block for larger neural networks, including central pattern generators (CPGs) controlling a variety of locomotion behaviors in spineless animals and mammals. It remains unclear how CPGs achieve the level of robustness and stability observed in nature. There has been a vastly growing consensus in the community of neurophysiolo…
In this paper we study synchronization of random clustered networks consisting of Kuramoto oscillators. More specifically, by developing a mean-field analysis, we find that the presence of cycles of order three does not play an important role on network synchronization, showing that the synchronization of random clustered networks can be described by tree-based theories, even for high values of clustering. In order to support our findings, we provide numerical simulations considering clustered and non-clustered networks, which are in good agreement with our theoretical results.
In this paper, we propose a dynamic delayed feedback control approach for desynchronization of chaotic-bursting synchronous activities in an ensemble of globally coupled neuronal oscillators. We demonstrate that the difference signal between an ensemble's mean field and its time delayed state, filtered and fed back to the ensemble, can suppress the self-synchronization in the ensemble. These individual units are decoupled and stabilized at the desired desynchronized states while the stimulation signal reduces to the noise level. The effectiveness of the method is illustrated by examples of two…
We consider complex clustered networks with a gradient structure, where sizes of the clusters are distributed unevenly. Such networks describe more closely actual networks in biophysical systems and in technological applications than previous models. Theoretical analysis predicts that the network synchronizability can be optimized by the strength of the gradient field but only when the gradient field points from large to small clusters. A remarkable finding is that, if the gradient field is sufficiently strong, synchronizability of the network is mainly determined by the properties of the subn…
Synchronized oscillations in networks of inhibitory and excitatory coupled bursting neurons are common in a variety of neural systems from central pattern generators to human brain circuits. One example of the latter is the subcortical network of the basal ganglia, formed by excitatory and inhibitory bursters of the subthalamic nucleus and globus pallidus, involved in motor control and affected in Parkinson's disease. Recent experiments have demonstrated the intermittent nature of the phase-locking of neural activity in this network. Here we explore one potential mechanism to explain the inter…
The onset of regular bursts in a group of irregularly bursting neurons with different individual properties is one of the most interesting dynamical properties found in neurobiological systems. In this paper we show how synchronization among chaotically bursting cells can lead to the onset of regular bursting. In order to clearly present the mechanism behind such regularization we model the individual dynamics of each cell with a simple two-dimensional map that produces chaotic bursting behavior similar to biological neurons.
We report on the origin of synchronized bursting dynamics in various networks of neural spiking oscillators, when a certain threshold in coupling strength is exceeded. These ensembles synchronize at relatively low coupling strength and lose synchronization at stronger coupling via spatio-temporal intermittency. The latter transition triggers multiple-timescale dynamics, which results in synchronized bursting with a fractal-like spatio-temporal pattern of spiking. Implementation of an appropriate technique of separating oscillations on different time-scales allows for quantitative analysis of t…
In this article, we report the development of an emerging dynamical state, namely, the alternating chimera, in a network of identical neuronal systems induced by an external electromagnetic field. Owing to this interaction scenario, the nonlinear neuronal oscillators are coupled indirectly via electromagnetic induction with magnetic flux, through which neurons communicate in spite of the absent physical connections among them. The evolution of each neuron, here, is described by the three-dimensional Hindmarsh-Rose dynamics. We demonstrate that the presence of such non-locally and globally inte…
We report experimental studies of synchronization phenomena in a pair of biological neurons that interact through naturally occurring, electrical coupling. When these neurons generate irregular bursts of spikes, the natural coupling synchronizes slow oscillations of membrane potential, but not the fast spikes. By adding artificial electrical coupling we studied transitions between synchrony and asynchrony in both slow oscillations and fast spikes. We discuss the dynamics of bursting and synchronization in living neurons with distributed functional morphology.
Symmetries are an essential feature of complex networks as they regulate how the graph collective dynamics organizes into clustered states. We here show how to control network symmetries, and how to enforce patterned states of synchronization with nodes clustered in a desired way. Our approach consists of perturbing the original network connectivity, either by adding new edges or by adding/removing links together with modifying their weights. By solving suitable optimization problems, we furthermore guarantee that changes made on the existing topology are minimal. The conditions for the stabil…
In the past decade, synchronization on complex networks has attracted increasing attentions from various research disciplines. Most previous works, however, focus only on the dynamic behaviors of synchronization process in the stable region, i.e., global synchronization. In this letter, we demonstrate that synchronization process on complex networks can efficiently reveal the substructures of networks when the coupling strength of chaotic oscillators is under the lower boundary of stable region. Both analytic and numerical results show that the nodes belonging to the same component in the hier…
A piecewise continuous map for modeling bursting and spiking behaviour of isolated neuron is proposed. The map was created from phenomenological viewpoint. The map demonstrates oscillations, which are qualitatively similar to oscillations generating by Rose-Hindmarsh model. The synchronization in small ensembles of the maps is investigated. It is considered the different number of elements in the ensemble and different connectivity topologies.
Symmetries in a network connectivity regulate how the graph's functioning organizes into clustered states. Classical methods for tracing the symmetry group of a network require very high computational costs, and therefore they are of hard, or even impossible, execution for large sized graphs. We here unveil that there is a direct connection between the elements of the eigen-vector centrality and the clusters of a network. This gives a fresh framework for cluster analysis in undirected and connected graphs, whose computational cost is linear in $N$. We show that the cluster identification is in…
We report on experimental studies of synchronization phenomena in a pair of analog electronic neurons (ENs). The ENs were designed to reproduce the observed membrane voltage oscillations of isolated biological neurons from the stomatogastric ganglion of the California spiny lobster Panulirus interruptus. The ENs are simple analog circuits which integrate four dimensional differential equations representing fast and slow subcellular mechanisms that produce the characteristic regular/chaotic spiking-bursting behavior of these cells. In this paper we study their dynamical behavior as we couple th…

In this paper, we focus on the emergence of diverse neuronal oscillations arising in a mixed population of neurons with different excitability properties. These properties produce mixed mode oscillations (MMOs) characterized by the combination of large amplitudes and alternate subthreshold or small amplitude oscillations. Considering the biophysically plausible, Izhikevich neuron model, we demonstrate that various MMOs, including MMBOs (mixed mode bursting oscillations) and synchronized tonic spiking appear in a randomly connected network of neurons, where a fraction of them is in a quiescent …
We report the emergent dynamics of a community structured modular network of chaotic Hindmarsh-Rose (HR) neurons with inhibitory synapses. We find the inhibitory coupling between the neuronal modules lead to complete synchronization of neurons in a module, and also pushes modules into interesting sequences of travelling burst patterns. When dynamical time-scales vary for neurons in different modules, hence breaking the symmetry among them, we see specific sequences of travelling burst patterns that are characteristic of the time-scale mismatch and coupling strengths. Thus for a modular network…
In this contribution, we have considered the collective behavior of the two as well as the network of heterogeneous coupled Hindmarsh Rose (HR) neurons. The heterogeneous models were made of a memristive 2D (HR) and the traditional 3D HR neurons. Investigating a model of two coupled neurons through an electrical synapse reveals dissipative properties. When control parameters are varied, the coupled neuron model exhibits rich dynamics, such as the periodic, quasi-periodic, and chaotic dynamics involving either bursting or spiking oscillations. For weak electrical coupling strength, non-synchron…
Chimera states, namely the coexistence of coherent and incoherent behavior, were previously analyzed in complex networks. However, they have not been extensively studied in modular networks. Here, we consider the neural network of the \textit{C.elegans} soil worm, organized into six interconnected communities, where neurons obey chaotic bursting dynamics. Neurons are assumed to be connected with electrical synapses within their communities and with chemical synapses across them. As our numerical simulations reveal, the coaction of these two types of coupling can shape the dynamics in such a wa…
