La(0.7)Sr(0.3)MnO3/BiFeO3 and La(0.7)Sr(0.3)MnO3/PbZr20Ti80O3 epitaxial heterostructures have been grown on SrTiO3 substrates. Spin wave resonances are used to study interface properties of the ferromagnetic La(0.7)Sr(0.3)MnO3. We find that the addition of the BiFeO3 or PbZr20Ti80O3 causes out-of-plane surface pinning of the La(0.7)Sr(0.3)MnO3. We are able to place new limits on the exchange constant D of La(0.7)Sr(0.3)MnO3 grown on these substrates and confirm the presence of uniaxial and biaxial anisotropies caused by the SrTiO3 substrate.
Low-frequency noise with the spectral density S(f)~1/f^g (f is the frequency and g~1) is a ubiquitous phenomenon, which hampers operation of many devices and circuits. A long-standing question of particular importance for electronics is whether 1/f noise is generated on the surface of electrical conductors or inside their volumes. Using high-quality graphene multilayers we were able to directly address this fundamental problem of the noise origin. Unlike the thickness of metal or semiconductor films, the thickness of graphene multilayers can be continuously and uniformly varied all the way dow…

We experimentally image the magnetic precession phase of patterned spin Hall multilayer samples to study the rf driving field vector using time-resolved anomalous Nernst effect (TRANE) microscopy. Our ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) measurements quantify the phase and amplitude for both the magnetic precession and the electric current, which allows us to establish the total driving field orientation and the strength of spin Hall effect. In a channel of uniform width, we observe spatial variation of the FMR phase laterally across the channel. We interpret our findings in the context of electrical…
Integration of functional oxides on silicon requires the use of complex heterostructures involving oxides of which the structure and properties strongly depend on the strain state and strain-mediated interface coupling. The experimental observation of strain-related effects of the individual components remains challenging. Here we report a Raman scattering investigation of complex multilayer BaTiO3/LaNiO3/CeO2/YSZ thin film structures on silicon. It is shown that the Raman signature of the multilayers differs significantly for three different laser wavelengths (633, 442 and 325 nm). Our result…
Spin relaxation in the ultrathin metallic films of stacked microelectronic devices is investigated on the basis of a modified Landau-Lifshitz equation of micromagnetic dynamics in which the damping torque is treated as originating from the coupling between precessing magnetization-vector and the introduced stress-tensors of intrinsic and extrinsic magnetic anisotropy. Particular attention is given to the time of exponential relaxation and ferromagnetic resonance linewidth which are derived in analytic form from the equation of magnetization energy loss and Gabor uncertainty relation between th…
Exchange-coupled nonmagnetic (NM) and ferromagnetic (FM) conducting multilayers are crucial for microwave spintronic devices of the future. We demonstrate, experimentally and theoretically, that in broadband measurements of ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) 10-70 nm-thick permalloy (Py) layers are shielded from the dynamic magnetic field of the microstrip line by eddy currents circulating in the NM capping layers, which strongly diminishes the amplitude of magnetisation precession in the FM material. Our findings have direct implications for designing broadband FMR and measurements of spin current…
We demonstrate the strong coupling of direct transition excitons in tungsten disulfide (WS2) with collective plasmonic resonances at room temperature. We use open plasmonic cavities formed by periodic arrays of metallic nanoparticles. We show clear anti-crossings with monolayer, bilayer and thicker multilayer WS2 on top of the nanoparticle array. The Rabi energy of such hybrid system varies from 50 to 110 meV from monolayer to sixteen layers, while it does not scale with the square root of the number of layers as expected for collective strong coupling. We prove that out-of-plane coupling comp…
We observed unexpected resonant response in [Fe/Cr]_(10) multilayers epitaxially grown on MgO(100) substrates which exists only when both ac current and dc magnetic field are simultaneously applied. The magnitude of the resonances is determined by the multilayer magnetization proving their intrinsic character. The reduction of interface epitaxy leads to non-linear dependence of the magnitude of resonances on the alternating current density. We speculate that the existence of the interface transition zone could facilitate the subatomic vibrations in thin metallic films and multilayers grown on …
Magnetic skyrmions are nanoscale spin structures recently discovered at room temperature (RT) in multilayer films. Employing their novel topological properties towards exciting technological prospects requires a mechanistic understanding of the excitation and relaxation mechanisms governing their stability and dynamics. Here we report on the magnetization dynamics of RT Néel skyrmions in Ir/Fe/Co/Pt multilayer films. We observe a ubiquitous excitation mode in the microwave absorption spectrum, arising from the gyrotropic resonance of topological skyrmions, and robust over a wide range of tempe…
We present the depth-resolved nuclear resonance reflectivity (NRR) studies of the magnetization evolution in [57Fe(3 nm)/Cr(1.2 nm)]*10 multilayer under the applied external field. The measurements have been performed at the station BL09XU of SPring-8 at different values of the external field (from 0 up to 1500 Oe). We apply the joint fit of the delayed reflectivity curves and the time spectra of the nuclear resonance reflectivity measured at different grazing angles for enhancement of the depth resolution and reliability of the results. For the first time we show that the azimuth angle, which…
We measured spin transport in nonferromagnetic (NM) metallic multilayers from the contribution to damping due to spin pumping from a ferromagnetic Co90Fe10 thin film. The multilayer stack consisted of NM1/NM2/Co90Fe10(2 nm)/NM2/NM3 with varying NM materials and thicknesses. Using conventional theory for one dimensional diffusive spin transport in metals, we show that the effective damping due to spin pumping can be strongly affected by the spin transport properties of each NM in the multilayer, which permits the use of damping measurements to accurately determine the spin transport properties …
The in-plane dynamics of ferrimagnetic Co/Gd multilayers are investigated by means of ferromagnetic resonance, magneto-optical Kerr effect and SQUID magnetometry. The power absorbed from these multilayers is strongly temperature dependent. For example, the resonant peak for a (Co 40 A /Gd 40 A)8 multilayer vanishes approximately 50 K below room temperature. We have further investigated Gd/Co/Gd and Tb/Co/Tb trilayers with different thicknesses of Gd (5-7 A), Tb (1-7 A) and Co (30-40 A). At room temperature, these Co-based trilayers show a shift of approximately 600 Oe at 24 GHz in the uniform …
We demonstrate the pumping of phonons by ferromagnetic resonance in a series of [Co(0.8 nm)/Pd(1.5 nm)]$_n$ multilayers ($n =$ 6, 11, 15, and 20) with large magnetostriction and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The effect is shown using broadband ferromagnetic resonance over a range of temperatures (10 to 300 K), where a resonant damping enhancement is observed at frequencies corresponding to standing wave phonons across the multilayer. The strength of this effect is enhanced by approximately a factor of 4 at 10 K compared to room temperature, which is anomalous in the sense that the tempera…
Non-collinear magnets exhibit a rich array of dynamic properties at microwave frequencies. They can host nanometre-scale topological textures known as skyrmions, whose spin resonances are expected to be highly sensitive to their local magnetic environment. Here, we report a magnetic resonance study of an [Ir/Fe/Co/Pt] multilayer hosting Néel skyrmions at room temperature. Experiments reveal two distinct resonances of the skyrmion phase during in-plane ac excitation, with frequencies between 6-12 GHz. Complementary micromagnetic simulations indicate that the net magnetic dipole moment rotates c…
Spin pumping in Yttrium-iron-garnet (YIG)/nonmagnetic-metal (NM) layer systems under ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) conditions is a popular method of generating spin current in the NM layer. A good understanding of the spin current source is essential in extracting spin Hall angle of the NM and in potential spintronics applications. It is widely believed that spin current is pumped from precessing YIG magnetization into NM layer. Here, by combining microwave absorption and DC-voltage measurements on YIG/Pt and YIG/NM1/NM2 (NM1=Cu or Al, NM2=Pt or Ta), we unambiguously showed that spin current i…
The precise value of the $g$-factor in graphene is of fundamental interest for all spin-related properties and their application. We investigate monolayer graphene on a Si/SiO2 substrate by resistively detected electron spin resonance (ESR). Surprisingly, the magnetic moment and corresponding g-factor of 1.952+/-0.002 is insensitive to charge carrier type, concentration, and mobility.
Ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) in magnetic multilayers of type F1/f/F2, where two strongly ferromagnetic layers F1 and F2 are separated by a weakly magnetic spacer f with a compositional gradient along its thickness, is investigated. The method allows to detect the weak signal from the spacer in additional to the more pronounced and readily measured signal from the outer strongly-magnetic layers, and thereby study the properties of the spacer as well as the interlayer exchange interaction it mediates. Variable temperature FMR measurements, especially near the relevant Curie points, reveal a ric…
Recently we have demonstrated the presence of spin-orbit toque in FeMn/Pt multilayers which, in combination with the anisotropy field, is able to rotate its magnetization consecutively from 0o to 360o without any external field. Here, we report on an investigation of static and dynamic magnetic properties of FeMn/Pt multilayers using combined techniques of magnetometry, ferromagnetic resonance, inverse spin Hall effect and spin Hall magnetoresistance measurements. The FeMn/Pt multilayer was found to exhibit ferromagnetic properties, and its temperature dependence of saturation magnetization ca…
Plasmon resonance in nanopatterned single layer graphene nanoribbon (SL-GNR), double layer graphene nanoribbon (DL-GNR) and triple layer graphene nanoribbon (TL-GNR) structures is studied both experimentally and by numerical simulations. We use 'realistic' graphene samples in our experiments to identify the key bottle necks in both experiments and theoretical models. The existence of electrical tunable plasmons in such stacked multilayer GNRs was first experimentally verified by infrared microscopy. We find that the strength of the plasmonic resonance increases in DL-GNR when compared to SL-GN…
Static and dynamic magnetic properties of a ferrimagnetic [Fe(35A)/Gd(50A)]x12 superlattice were investigated in a wide 4-300 K temperature range using magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) and ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) techniques. The multilayer structure was sputtered on a transparent glass substrate which made it possible to perform MOKE measurements on both Fe and Gd terminated sides of the superlattice. These experiments allowed us to detect a transition between field-aligned and canted magnetic states on both sides of the film and to distinguish between the bulk and surface twisted phas…
Magneto Raman scattering study of the E$_{2g}$ optical phonons in multi-layer epitaxial graphene grown on a carbon face of SiC are presented. At 4.2K in magnetic field up to 33 T, we observe a series of well pronounced avoided crossings each time the optically active inter Landau level transition is tuned in resonance with the E$_{2g}$ phonon excitation (at 196 meV). The width of the phonon Raman scattering response also shows pronounced variations and is enhanced in conditions of resonance. The experimental results are well reproduced by a model that gives directly the strength of the electro…
The metal-insulator transition (MIT) is one of the remarkable electrical transport properties of atomically thin molybdenum disulphide (MoS2). Although the theory of electron-electron interactions has been used in modeling the MIT phenomena in MoS2, the underlying mechanism and detailed MIT process still remain largely unexplored. Here, we demonstrate that the vertical metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) heterostructures built from atomically thin MoS2 (monolayers and multilayers) are ideal capacitor structures for probing the electron states in MoS2. The vertical configuration of MIS heterost…
We present an electron spin resonance (ESR) approach to characterize shallow electron trapping in band-tail states at Si/SiO2 interfaces in metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) devices and demonstrate it on two MOS devices fabricated at different laboratories. Despite displaying similar low temperature (4.2 K) peak mobilities, our ESR data reveal a significant difference in the Si/SiO2 interface quality of these two devices, specifically an order of magnitude difference in the number of shallow trapped charges at the Si/SiO2 interfaces. Thus, our ESR method allows a quantitative evaluation of the S…
Using broadband ferromagnetic resonance, we measure the damping parameter of [Co(5 Å)/Pt(3 Å)]${\times 6}$ multilayers whose growth was optimized to maximize the perpendicular anisotropy. Structural characterizations indicate abrupt interfaces essentially free of intermixing despite the miscible character of Co and Pt. Gilbert damping parameters as low as 0.021 can be obtained despite a magneto-crystalline anisotropy as large as $10^6~\textrm{J/m}^3$. The inhomogeneous broadening accounts for part of the ferromagnetic resonance linewidth, indicating some structural disorder leading to a equiva…
We present an imaging modality that enables detection of magnetic moments and their resulting stray magnetic fields. We use wide-field magnetic imaging that employs a diamond-based magnetometer and has combined magneto-optic detection (e.g. magneto-optic Kerr effect) capabilities. We employ such an instrument to image magnetic (stripe) domains in multilayered ferromagnetic structures.
Plasmonics, the science and technology of the interaction of light with metallic objects, is fundamentally changing the way we can detect, generate and manipulate light. Although the field is progressing swiftly, thanks to the availability of nanoscale manufacturing and analysis methods, fundamental properties such as the plasmonic excitations' symmetries cannot be accessed directly, leading to a partial, sometimes incorrect, understanding of their properties. Here we overcome this limitation by deliberately shaping the wave function of an electron beam to match a plasmonic excitations' symmet…
We employ electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) of the spin probe Mn2+ to study the paraelectric ferroelectric transition in DMAMnF and Mn2 doped DMZnF, which are considered to be model metal organic frameworks (MOF) with a Pb free perovskite architecture. In DMAMnF, we study the variation of the Mn2+ EPR line shape and intensity at the X-band (9.4 GHz) and over 80 to 300 K, and we show the absence of magnetoelectric coupling at the ferroelectric transition. At the antiferromagnetic transition in DMMnF, we detect a magnetoelectric coupling caused by weak ferromagnetism in the AFM phase. In DMZ…
We have fabricated highly-luminescent samples with erbium-doped amorphous silicon sub-oxide (a-SiOx<Er>) layers on SiO2/Si substrates. The layers are designed to provide a resonance with large modal overlap with the active material and with low quality factor (Q-factor) at 1540 nm. Also, the structure has higher Q-factor resonances in the wavelength range between 600 - 1200 nm. Within this range, strong light emission from a-SiOx defect-related radiative centers and emission from the Er3+ optical transition 4I11/2 - 4I15/2 (980 nm) are observed. A two-fold improvement in photoluminescence (PL)…
The CeIn3-xSnx cubic heavy fermion system presents an antiferromagnetic transition at T_N = 10 K, for x = 0, that decreases continuously down to 0 K upon Sn substitution at a critical concentration of x_c ~ 0.65. In the vicinity of T_N -> 0 the system shows non-Fermi liquid behavior due to antiferromagnetic critical fluctuations. For a high Sn content, x > 2.2, intermediate valence effects are present. In this work we show that Gd3+-doped electron spin resonance (ESR) probes a change in the character of the Ce 4f electron, as a function of Sn substitution. The Gd3+ ESR results indicate a trans…
We investigate the spin transport and ferromagnetic resonance properties of giant magnetoresistive (GMR) Co/Cu-Ni multilayers with variable levels of Ni doping in the Cu spacer. We present an experimental evidence for a magnetic-to-diamagnetic transition in the atomic magnetic moment of Ni in the Cu matrix for concentrations below 15 at. % Ni. As its concentration is increased, Ni atoms turn into spin scattering centers, which is manifested experimentally as a step-like change in the GMR of the multilayers. This behavior is observed in multilayers with gradient-doped Cu spacers, where only the…
The interaction between strain and spin has received intensive attention in the scientific community due to its abundant physical phenomena and huge technological impact. Until now, there is no experimental report on ultra-high frequency magnetic resonance through the strain-spin coupling for any technologically relevant perpendicular magnetic material. Here we report the experimental detection of the acoustic strain waves that have a response time on the order of 10 picoseconds in perpendicular magnetic [Co/Pd]n multilayers via a femtosecond laser pulse excitation. Through direct measurements…
