In this paper, we establish a Bochner type formula on Alexandrov spaces with Ricci curvature bounded below. Yau's gradient estimate for harmonic functions is also obtained on Alexandrov spaces.
In the previous work [35], the second and third authors established a Bochner type formula on Alexandrov spaces. The purpose of this paper is to give some applications of the Bochner type formula. Firstly, we extend the sharp lower bound estimates of spectral gap, due to Chen-Wang [9, 10] and Bakry-Qian [6], from smooth Riemannian manifolds to Alexandrov spaces. As an application, we get an Obata type theorem for Alexandrov spaces. Secondly, we obtain (sharp) Li-Yau's estimate for positve solutions of heat equations on Alexandrov spaces.
In the paper \cite{yau1974convex}, Yau proved that: There is no non-trivial continuous concave function on a complete manifold with finite volume. We prove analogue theorems for several metric spaces, including Alexandrov spaces with curvature bounded below/above, $C^α$-Hölder Riemannian manifolds.
In this note, we estimate the upper bound of volume of closed positively or nonnegatively curved Alexandrov space $X$ with strictly convex boundary. We also discuss the equality case. In particular, the Boundary Conjecture holds when the volume upper bound is achieved. Our theorem also can be applied to Riemannian manifolds with non-smooth boundary, which generalizes Heintze and Karcher's classical volume comparison theorem. Our main tool is the gradient flow of semi-concave functions.
We prove the generalized Margulis lemma with a uniform index bound on an Alexandrov $n$-space $X$ with curvature bounded below, i.e., small loops at $p\in X$ generate a subgroup of the fundamental group of unit ball $B_1(p)$ that contains a nilpotent subgroup of index $\le w(n)$, where $w(n)$ is a constant depending only on the dimension $n$. The proof is based on the main ideas of V.~Kapovitch, A.~Petrunin, and W.~Tuschmann, and the following results: (1) We prove that any regular almost Lipschitz submersion constructed by Yamaguchi on a collapsed Alexandrov space with curvature bounded below…
We prove that on compact Alexandrov spaces with curvature bounded below the gradient flow of the Dirichlet energy in the $L^2$-space produces the same evolution as the gradient flow of the relative entropy in the $L^2$-Wasserstein space. This means that the heat flow is well defined by either one of the two gradient flows. Combining properties of these flows, we are able to deduce the Lipschitz continuity of the heat kernel as well as Bakry-Émery gradient estimates and the $Γ_2$-condition. Our identification is established by purely metric means, unlike preceding results relying on PDE techniq…
We demonstrate that the property of being Alexandrov immersed is preserved along mean curvature flow. Furthermore, we demonstrate that mean curvature flow techniques for mean convex embedded flows such as noncollapsing and gradient estimates also hold in this setting. We also indicate the necessary modifications to the work of Brendle--Huisken to allow for mean curvature flow with surgery for the Alexandrov immersed, $2$-dimensional setting.
Chung-Grigor'yan-Yau's inequality describes upper bounds of eigenvalues of Laplacian in terms of subsets ("input") and their volumes. In this paper we will show that we can reduce "input" in Chung-Grigor'yan-Yau's inequality in the setting of Alexandrov spaces satisfying CD$(0,\infty)$. We will also discuss a related conjecture for some universal inequality among eigenvalues of Laplacian.
In this paper, we study the topology of topologically regular 4-dimensional open non-negatively curved Alexandrov spaces. These spaces occur naturally as the blow-up limits of compact Riemannian manifolds with lower curvature bound. These manifolds have also been studied by Yamaguchi in his preprint [Yam2002]. Our main tools are gradient flows of semi-concave functions and critical point theory for distance functions, which have been used to study the 3-dimensional collapsing theory in the paper [CaoG2010]. The results of this paper will be used in our future studies of collapsing 4-manifolds,…
In this paper, we will study the (linear) geometric analysis on metric measure spaces. We will establish a local Li-Yau's estimate for weak solutions of the heat equation and prove a sharp Yau's gradient gradient for harmonic functions on metric measure spaces, under the Riemannian curvature-dimension condition $RCD^*(K,N).$
In this paper, motivated by finding sharp Li-Yau type gradient estimate for positive solution of heat equations on complete Riemannian manifolds with negative Ricci curvature lower bound, we first introduce the notion of Li-Yau multiplier set and show that it can be computed by heat kernel of the manifold. Then, an optimal Li-Yau type gradient estimate is obtained on hyperbolic spaces by using recurrence relations of heat kernels on hyperbolic spaces. Finally, as an application, we obtain sharp Harnack inequalities on hyperbolic spaces.
In this paper, we obtain a Li-Yau type gradient estimate with time dependent parameter for positive solutions of the heat equation, so that the Li-Yau type gradient estimate of Li-Xu are special cases of the estimate. We also obtain improvements of Davies' Li-Yau type gradient estimate. The argument is different with those of Li-Xu and Qian.
In this paper, motivated by the work of Qi S. Zhang in [28], we derive Li-Yau gradient bounds for positive solutions of the f-heat equation on closed manifolds with Bakry-Emery Ricci curvature bounded below.
In this paper, motivated by the works of Bakry et. al in finding sharp Li-Yau type gradient estimate for positive solutions of the heat equation on complete Riemannian manifolds with nonzero Ricci curvature lower bound, we first introduce a general form of Li-Yau type gradient estimate and show that the validity of such an estimate for any positive solutions of the heat equation reduces to the validity of the estimate for the heat kernel of the Riemannian manifold. Then, a sharp Li-Yau type gradient estimate on the three dimensional hyperbolic space is obtained by using the explicit expression…
In this paper, on Riemannian manifolds with boundary, we establish a Yau type gradient estimate and Liouville theorem for harmonic functions under Dirichlet boundary condition. Under a similar setting, we also formulate a Souplet-Zhang type gradient estimate and Liouville theorem for ancient solutions to the heat equation.
In this paper, we generalize the Cao-Yau's gradient estimate for the sum of squares of vector fields up to higher step under assumption of the generalized curvature-dimension inequality. With its applications, by deriving a curvature-dimension inequality, we are able to obtain the Li-Yau gradient estimate for the CR heat equation in a closed pseudohermitian manifold of nonvanishing torsion tensors. As consequences, we obtain the Harnack inequality and upper bound estimate for the CR heat kernel.
In this paper, we will show the Yau's gradient estimate for harmonic maps into a metric space $(X,d_X)$ with curvature bounded above by a constant $κ$, $κ\geq0$, in the sense of Alexandrov. As a direct application, it gives some Liouville theorems for such harmonic maps. This extends the works of S. Y. Cheng [4] and H. I. Choi [5] to harmonic maps into singular spaces.
This article shows that if the negative part of Ricci curvature lies in the Kato class, the heat kernel satisfies a Li-Yau type estimate. Additionally, using the resulting heat kernel bound, we show that the obtained heat kernel estimate leads to bounds on the first Betti number only depending on the Kato constant.
In this paper, we obtain Li-Yau type gradient estimates with time dependent parameter for positive solutions of the heat equation that are different with the estimates by Li-Xu \cite{LX} and Qian \cite{Qi}. As an application of the estimate, we also obtained improvements of Davies' Li-Yau type gradient estimate.
We show that, up to the flow of the soliton vector field, there exists a unique complete steady gradient Kähler-Ricci soliton in every Kähler class of an equivariant crepant resolution of a Calabi-Yau cone converging at a polynomial rate to Cao's steady gradient Kähler-Ricci soliton on the cone.
This paper provides the technical details of gradient flow construction and related problems, which are essential for our construction of Lagrangian torus fibrations for Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces.
We prove a Li-Yau gradient estimate for positive solutions to the heat equation, with Neumann boundary conditions, on a compact Riemannian submanifold with boundary ${\bf M}^n\subseteq {\bf N}^n$, satisfying the integral Ricci curvature assumption: \begin{equation} D^2 \sup_{x\in {\bf N}} \left( \oint_{B(x,D)} |Ric^-|^p dy \right)^{\frac{1}{p}} < K \end{equation} for $K(n,p)$ small enough, $p>n/2$, where $diam({\bf M})\leq D$. The boundary of ${\bf M}$ is not necessarily convex, but it needs to satisfy the interior rolling $R-$ball condition.
Equipped with the L^2-distortion distance, the space "X" of all metric measure spaces (X,d,m) is proven to have nonnegative curvature in the sense of Alexandrov. Geodesics and tangent spaces are characterized in detail. Moreover, classes of semiconvex functionals and their gradient flows on "X" are presented.
Inspired Yau's work (Comm. Anal. Geom., 1994), in this short note we provide a new version of Li-Yau gradient estimate for the linear heat equation, which generalizes some known results and gives new gradient estimates. Also we explain the different known results as different cases here.
In this paper, we consider the gradient estimates of the positive solutions to the following equation defined on a complete Riemannian manifold $(M, g)$ $$Δu + au(\log u)^{p}+bu=0,$$ where $a, b\in \mathbb{R}$ and $p$ is a rational number with $p=\frac{k_1}{2k_2+1}\geq2$ where $k_1$ and $k_2$ are positive integer numbers. we obtain the gradient bound of a positive solution to the equation which does not depend on the bounds of the solution and the Laplacian of the distance function on $(M, g)$. Our results can be viewed as a natural extension of Yau's estimates on positive harmonic function.
In this note we show how results in \cite{BaudoinBonnefont2016, BaudoinGarofalo2013, CoulhonJiangKoskelaSikora2017} yield the Cheng-Yau estimate on two classes of sub-Riemannian manifolds: Carnot groups and sub-Riemannian manifolds satisfying a generalized curvature-dimension inequality.
This article is devoted to the study of several estimations for a positive solution to a nonlinear weighted parabolic equation on a weighted Riemannian manifold. We therefore derive new Li-Yau type and Hamilton type gradient estimates yielding several consequences. We also derive Hessian estimate and some corollaries for the same equation. Among the applications of our estimates discussed here are Harnack type inequalities, Liouville type theorems and a local time reversed Harnack inequality.
We derive a gradient estimate for positive functions, in particular for positive solutions to the heat equation, on finite or locally finite graphs. Unlike the well known Li-Yau estimate, which is based on the maximum principle, our estimate follows from the graph structure of the gradient form and the Laplacian operator. Though our assumption on graphs is slightly stronger than that of Bauer, Horn, Lin, Lippner, Mangoubi, and Yau (J. Differential Geom. 99 (2015) 359-405), our estimate can be easily applied to nonlinear differential equations, as well as differential inequalities. As applicati…
We derive a sharp, localized version of elliptic type gradient estimates for positive solutions (bounded or not) to the heat equation. These estimates are akin to the Cheng-Yau estimate for the Laplace equation and Hamilton's estimate for bounded solutions to the heat equation on compact manifolds. As applications, we generalize Yau's celebrated Liouville theorem for positive harmonic functions to positive eternal solutions of the heat equation, under certain growth condition. Surprisingly, this Liouville theorem for the heat equation does not hold even in ${\bf R}^n$ without such a condition.…
Let $(\M^n, g_{ij})$ be a complete Riemammnian manifold. For some constants $p,\ r>0$, define $\displaystyle k(p,r)=\sup_{x\in M}r^2\left(\oint_{B(x,r)}|Ric^-|^p dV\right)^{1/p}$, where $Ric^-$ denotes the negative part of the Ricci curvature tensor. We prove that for any $p>\frac{n}{2}$, when $k(p,1)$ is small enough, certain Li-Yau type gradient bound holds for the positive solutions of the heat equation on geodesic balls $B(O,r)$ in $\M$ with $0<r\leq 1$. Here the assumption that $k(p,1)$ being small allows the situation where the manifolds is collapsing. Recall that in \cite{ZZ}, certain L…
We prove a gradient estimate for Donaldson's equation \[ω\wedge(χ+\sqrt{-1}\partial\overline{\partial}φ)^{n-1}=e^F(χ+\sqrt{-1}\partial\overline{\partial}φ)^n\] (and its parabolic analog) on an $n$-dimensional compact Kähler manifold $(M,ω)$ with another Hermitian metric $χ$ directly from the uniform upper bounds for $tr_ωχ_φ$ and Alexandrov-Bakelman-Pucci (ABP) maximum principle.
We prove Li-Yau type gradient bounds for the heat equation either on manifolds with fixed metric or under the Ricci flow. In the former case the curvature condition is $|Ric^-| \in L^p$ for some $p>n/2$, or $\sup_\M \int_\M |Ric^-|^2(y)d^{2-n}(x,y)dy<\infty$, where $n$ is the dimension of the manifold. In the later case, one only needs scalar curvature being bounded. We will explain why the conditions are nearly optimal and give an application. The Li-Yau bound for the heat equation on manifolds with fixed metric seems to be the first one allowing Ricci curvature not bounded from below.
Continuing our previous work (arXiv:1509.07981v1), we derive another global gradient estimate for positive functions, particularly for positive solutions to the heat equation on finite or locally finite graphs. In general, the gradient estimate in the present paper is independent of our previous one. As applications, it can be used to get an upper bound and a lower bound of the heat kernel on locally finite graphs. These global gradient estimates can be compared with the Li-Yau inequality on graphs contributed by Bauer, Horn, Lin, Lipper, Mangoubi and Yau (J. Differential Geom. 99 (2015) 359-4…
We prove the Bochner-Weitzenböck formula for the (nonlinear) Laplacian on general Finsler manifolds and derive Li-Yau type gradient estimates as well as parabolic Harnack inequalities. Moreover, we deduce Bakry-Émery gradient estimates. All these estimates depend on lower bounds for the weighted flag Ricci tensor.
In this paper, we study Li-Yau gradient estimates for the solutions $u$ to the heat equation $\partial_tu=Δu$ on graphs under the curvature condition $CD(n,-K)$ introduced by Bauer et al. in \cite{BHLLMY}. As applications, we derive Harnack inequalities and heat kernel estimates on graphs. Also we present a type of Hamilton gradient estimates.
In this paper, we will establish an elliptic local Li-Yau gradient estimate for weak solutions of the heat equation on metric measure spaces with generalized Ricci curvature bounded from below. One of its main applications is a sharp gradient estimate for the logarithm of heat kernels. These results seem new even for smooth Riemannian manifolds.
We prove differential Harnack inequalities for flows of strictly convex hypersurfaces by powers $p$, $0<p<1$, of the mean curvature in Einstein manifolds with a positive lower bound on the sectional curvature. We assume that this lower bound is sufficiently large compared to the derivatives of the curvature tensor of the ambient space and that the mean curvature of the initial hypersurface is sufficiently large compared to the ambient geometry. We also obtain some new Harnack inequalities for more general curvature flows in the sphere, as well as a monotonicity estimate for the mean curvature …
Operators on nonlinear metric measure spaces I: A New Laplacian comparison theorem on Finsler manifolds and a generalized Li-Yau approach to gradient estimates of Finslerian Schrödinger equation
We proved a matrix Li-Yau-Hamilton type gradient estimates for the positive solutin of the heat equation on complete Kaehler manifolds with nonnegative bisectional curvature. As a consequence we obtain a comparison theorem for the distance function under this curvature assumption.
We introduce a new version of a curvature-dimension inequality for non-negative curvature. We use this inequality to prove a logarithmic Li-Yau inequality on finite graphs. To formulate this inequality, we introduce a non-linear variant of the calculus of Bakry and Émery. In the case of manifolds, the new calculus and the new curvature-dimension inequality coincide with the common ones. In the case of graphs, they coincide in a limit. In this sense, the new curvature-dimension inequality gives a more general concept of curvature on graphs and on manifolds. We show that Ricci-flat graphs have a…
We study an equation proposed by Fu and Yau as a natural $n$-dimensional generalization of a Strominger system that they solved in dimension $2$. It is a complex Hessian equation with right hand side depending on gradients. Building on the methods of Fu and Yau, we obtain $C^0$, $C^2$ and $C^{2,α}$ a priori estimates. We also identify difficulties in extending the Fu-Yau arguments for non-degeneracy from dimension $2$ to higher dimensions.
In this paper, by slightly modifying Li-Yau's technique so that we can handle drifting Laplacians, we were able to find three different gradient estimates for the warping function, one for each sign of the Einstein constant of the fiber manifold. As an application, we exhibit a nonexistence theorem for gradient almost Ricci solitons possessing certain metric properties on the base of the warped product.
In this article we study the limiting behavior of the Kähler Ricci flow on complete non-compact Kähler manifolds. We provide sufficient conditions under which a complete non-compact gradient Kähler-Ricci soliton is biholomorphic to $\ce^n$. We also discuss the uniformization conjecture by Yau \cite{Y} for complete non-compact Kähler manifolds with positive holomorphic bisectional curvature.
We survey some of the recent progress on complete gradient shrinking Ricci solitons, including the classifications in dimension three and asymptotic behavior of potential functions as well as volume growths of geodesic balls in higher dimensions. This article is written for the conference proceedings dedicated to Yau's 60th birthday.
In this paper we give a construction of Lagrangian torus fibration for Fermat type quintic \cy hypersurfaces via the method of gradient flow. We also compute the monodromy of the expected special Lagrangian torus fibration and discuss structures of singular fibers.
In this paper, we prove that complete gradient steady Kähler-Ricci solitons with harmonic Bochner tensor are necessarily Kähler-Ricci flat, i.e., Calabi-Yau, and that complete gradient shrinking (or expanding) Kähler-Ricci solitons with harmonic Bochner tensor must be isometric to a quotient of $N^k\times \mathbb{C}^{n-k}$, where $N$ is a Kähler-Einstein manifold with positive (or negative) scalar curvature.
