We study axisymmetric perturbations of neutron star endowed with a strong magnetic field (magnetars), considering the coupled oscillations of the fluid core with the solid crust. We recover discrete oscillations based mainly in the crust and a continuum in the core. We also confirm the presence of "discrete Alfvén modes" in the gap between two contiguous continua (see Van Hooven& Levin (2011)) and, in addition, we can resolve some of them also inside the continua. Our results can explain both the lower and the higher observed quasi periodical oscillations (QPOs) in SGR 1806-20 and SGR 1900+14 and put constrains on the mass, radius and crust thickness of the two magnetars.
The seismological dynamics of magnetars is largely determined by a strong hydro-magnetic coupling between the solid crust and the fluid core. In this paper we set up a "spectral" computational framework in which the magnetar's motion is decomposed into a series of basis functions which are associated with the crust and core vibrational eigenmodes. A general-relativistic formalism is presented for evaluation of the core Alfven modes in the magnetic-flux coordinates, as well for eigenmode computation of a strongly magnetized crust of finite thickness. By considering coupling of the crustal modes…
Quasi-Periodic Oscillations (QPOs) observed during Soft Gamma Repeaters giant flares are commonly interpreted as the torsional oscillations of magnetars. The oscillatory motion is influenced by the strong interaction between the shear modes of the crust and Alfven-like modes in the core. We study the dynamics which arises through this interaction, and present several new results: (1) We show that global {\it edge modes} frequently reside near the edges of the core Alfven continuum. (2) We compute the magnetar's oscillatory motion for realistic axisymmetric magnetic field configurations and cor…
In a realistic model of magneto-elastic oscillations in magnetars, we find that crustal shear oscillations, often invoked as an explanation of quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) seen after giant flares in soft gamma-ray repeaters (SGRs), are damped by resonant absorption on timescales of at most 0.2s, for a lower limit on the dipole magnetic field strength of 5 x 10^13 G. At higher magnetic field strengths (typical in magnetars) the damping timescale is even shorter, as anticipated by earlier toy-models. We have investigated a range of equations of state and masses and if magnetars are dominat…
Working with a magnetic field periodic along $Oz$ and decaying in time, we deal with the Dirac-type equation characterizing the fermions evolving in magnetar's crust. For ultra-relativistic particles, one can employ the perturbative approach, to compute the conserved current density components. If the magnetic field is frozen and the magnetar is treated as a stationary object, the fermion's wave function is expressed in terms of the Heun's Confluent functions. Finally, we are extending some previous investigations on the linearly independent fermionic modes solutions to the Mathieu's equation …
We study the effect of the magnetic field geometry on the oscillation spectra of strongly magnetized stars. The magnetic field distributions include both toroidal and poloidal contributions. We observe that the toroidal contribution does not influence significantly the torsional oscillations of the crust. Moreover, in the case that the core is a type I supercontactor and the magnetic fields are confined in the crust, the torsional oscillation spectrum is drastically affected by the presence of the strong magnetic fields. Comparison with results and estimations for the magnetic field strength, …
We study the torsional magneto-elastic oscillations of relativistic superfluid magnetars and explore the effects of a phase transition in the crust-core interface (nuclear pasta) which results in a weaker elastic response. Exploring various models with different extension of nuclear pasta phases, we find that the differences in the oscillation spectrum present in purely elastic modes (weak magnetic field), are smeared out with increasing strength of the magnetic field. For magnetar conditions, the main characteristic and features of models without nuclear pasta are preserved. We find in genera…
In the late inspiral phase of a double neutron star (NS) or NS-black hole system in which one NS is a magnetar, the tidal force on the magnetar arisen from its companion will increase dramatically as the binary approaches. The tidal-induced deformation may surpass the maximum that the magnetar's crust can sustain just seconds or subseconds before the coalescence. A catastrophic global crust destruction may thus occur, and the magnetic energy stored in the magnetar's interior will have the opportunity to be released, which would be observed as a superflare with energy 100s of times larger than …
According to the strange quark matter hypothesis, pulsars may actually be strange stars composed of self-bound strange quark matter. The normal matter crust of a strange star, unlike that of a normal neutron star, is supported by a strong electric field. A gap is then presented between the crust and the strange quark core. Therefore, peculiar core-crust oscillation may occur in a strange star, which can produce distinctive gravitational waves. In this paper, the waveforms of such gravitational waves are derived using a rigid model. We find that the gravitational waves are extremely weak and un…
We extend a general-relativistic ideal magneto-hydrodynamical code to include the effects of elasticity. Using this numerical tool we analyse the magneto-elastic oscillations of highly magnetised neutron stars (magnetars). In simulations without magnetic field we are able to recover the purely crustal shear oscillations within an accuracy of about a few per cent. For dipole magnetic fields between 5 x 10^13 and 10^15 G the Alfvén oscillations become modified substantially by the presence of the crust. Those quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) split into three families: Lower QPOs near the equat…
The violent giant flares of magnetars excite QPOs which persist for hundreds of seconds, as seen in the X-ray tail following the initial burst. Recent studies, based on single-fluid barotropic magnetar models, have suggested that the lower-frequency QPOs correspond to magneto-elastic oscillations of the star. The higher frequencies, however, in particular the strong 625 Hz peak, have proved harder to explain, except as high mode multipoles. In this work we study the time evolutions of non-axisymmetric oscillations of two-fluid Newtonian magnetars with no crust. We consider models with superflu…
We study coupled axial and polar axisymmetric oscillations of a neutron star endowed with a strong magnetic field, having both poloidal and toroidal components. The toroidal component of the magnetic field is driving the coupling between the polar and axial oscillations. The star is composed of a fluid core as well as a solid crust. Using a two dimensional general relativistic simulation and a magnetic field B = 10^16 G, we study the change in the polar and axial spectrum caused by the coupling. We find that the axial spectrum suffers a dramatic change in its nature, losing its continuum chara…
In this work, we have studied oscillations in the crust of a neutron star which magnetic field has both dipolar and toroidal components, the former extends from the stellar interior to the outer space and the later is confined inside the star radius. Our study is based on the solutions we have got for perturbations in the star fluid, confined to the crust thickness. Our results are compared to the frequencies observed in the Soft Gamma Repeaters signals.
We study the effect of superfluidity on torsional oscillations of highly magnetised neutron stars (magnetars) with a microphysical equation of state by means of two-dimensional, magnetohydrodynamical- elastic simulations. The superfluid properties of the neutrons in the neutron star core are treated in a parametric way in which we effectively decouple part of the core matter from the oscillations. Our simulations confirm the existence of two groups of oscillations, namely continuum oscillations that are confined to the neutron star core and are of Alfvénic character, and global oscillations wi…
We investigate torsional Alfvén modes of relativistic stars with a global dipole magnetic field. It has been noted recently (Glampedakis et al. 2006) that such oscillation modes could serve as as an alternative explanation (in contrast to torsional crustal modes) for the SGR phenomenon, if the magnetic field is not confined to the crust. We compute global Alfvén modes for a representative sample of equations of state and magnetar masses, in the ideal MHD approximation and ignoring $\ell \pm 2$ terms in the eigenfunction. We find that the presence of a realistic crust has a negligible effect on…
Oscillation modes of isolated compact stars can, in principle, be a fingerprint of the equation of state (EoS) of dense matter. We study the non-radial high-frequency l=2 spheroidal modes of neutron stars and strange quark stars, adopting a two-component model (core and crust) for these two types of stars. Using perturbed fluid equations in the relativistic Cowling approximation, we explore the effect of a strangelet or hadronic crust on the oscillation modes of strange stars. The results differ from the case of neutron stars with a crust. In comparison to fluid-only configurations, we find th…
We study torsional oscillations of neutron stars in the scalar-tensor theory of gravity using the relativistic Cowling approximation. We compute unperturbed neutron star models adopting realistic equations of state for the neutron star's core and crust. For scalar-tensor theories that allow for spontaneous scalarization, the crust thickness can be significantly smaller than in general relativity. We derive the perturbation equation describing torsional oscillations in scalar-tensor theory, and we solve the corresponding eigenvalue problem to find the oscillation frequencies. The fundamental mo…
Nonradial oscillations of relativistic neutron stars with a solid crust are computed in the relativistic Cowling approximation, in which all metric perturbations are ignored. For the modal analysis, we employ three-component relativistic neutron star models with a solid crust, a fluid core, and a fluid ocean. As a measure for the relativistic effects on the oscillation modes, we calculate the relative frequency difference defined as $δσ/σ\equiv(σ_{GR}-σ_N)/σ_{GR}$, where $σ_{GR}$ and $σ_R$ are, respectively, the relativistic and the Newtonian oscillation frequencies. The relative difference $δ…
We present the results of the first study of global oscillations of relativistic stars with both elastic crusts and interpenetrating superfluid components. For simplicity, we focus on the axial quasi-normal modes. Our results demonstrate that the torsional crust modes are essentially unaffected by the coupling to the gravitational field. This is as expected since these oscillations are known to be weak gravitational-wave sources. In contrast, the presence of a loosely coupled superfluid neutron component in the crust can have a significant effect on the oscillation spectrum. We show that the e…
