We have identified several lithium-rich low-mass (0.08<M<0.3 Msun). stars within 5.5 deg of the young open cluster Eta Chamaeleontis, nearly four times the radius of previous search efforts. We propose 4 new probable cluster members and 3 possible members requiring further investigation. Candidates were selected on the basis of DENIS and 2MASS photometry, NOMAD astrometry and extensive follow-up spectroscopy. Several of these stars show substantial variation in their H-alpha emission line strengths on timescales of days to months, with at least one event attributable to accretion from a circumstellar disk. These findings are consistent with a dynamical origin for the current configuration of the cluster, without the need to invoke an abnormally top-heavy Initial Mass Function, as proposed by some authors.
The nearby Eta Chamaeleontis association is a collection of 4-10 Myr old stars with a disk fraction of 35-45%. In this study, the broad wavelength coverage of VLT/X-Shooter is used to measure the stellar and mass accretion properties of 15 low mass stars in the Eta Chamaeleontis association. For each star, the observed spectrum is fitted with a non-accreting stellar template and an accretion spectrum obtained from assuming a plane-parallel hydrogen slab. Five of the eight stars with an IR disk excess show excess UV emission, indicating ongoing accretion. The accretion rates measured here are s…
Z Camelopardalis (Z Cam) stars are a subset of dwarf novae distinguished by the occurrence of standstills, periods of relative constant brightness one to one and a half magnitudes fainter than maximum brightness. As part of an ongoing observing campaign, the Z CamPaign, the authors focused attention on several Z Cam suspects in the southern hemisphere. Two stars, BP Coronae Australis and ST Chamaeleontis were found to exhibit standstill behavior in 2013, thus confirming them as Z Cam type systems. This adds two more bona fide members to the 19 confirmed Z Cams, bringing the total to 21.

We present multi-epoch medium-resolution observations of two M4.5 candidate members in the halo of the ~8 Myr Eta Chamaeleontis open cluster. Over six months of observations both stars exhibited variations in their H-alpha line profiles on timescales of days to months, with at least one episode of substantial activity attributable to accretion from a circumstellar disk. We derive an accretion rate ~10^-8.7 Msun/yr for this event, with a rate of ~10^-10.6 Msun/yr in quiescence. Episodic accretion like that observed here means existing surveys of accreting Weak-lined T-Tauri Stars in young clust…
We aim at determining the rotational and magnetic-related activity properties of stars at different stages of evolution. We focus our attention primarily on members of young stellar associations of known ages. Specifically, we extend our previous analysis in Paper I (Messina et al. 2010, A&A 520, A15) to 3 additional young stellar associations beyond 100 pc and with ages in the range 6-40 Myr: epsilon Chamaeleontis (~6 Myr), Octans (~20 Myr), and Argus (~40 Myr). Additional rotational data of eta Chamaeleontis and IC2391 clusters are also considered. Rotational periods were determined from pho…
We characterize the physical properties of T Chamaeleontis, a transitional T Tauri star showing UX Ori-type variability, and of its associated disc, and probe possible effects of disc clearing processes. Different spectral diagnostics are examined, based on a rich collection of optical high- and low-resolution spectra. We determine radial and projected rotational velocities, and measure equivalent widths of the Li I (6708 A) line and of the most prominent emission lines (e.g. Ha, Hb and [OI] 6300A); we analyse shape changes of photospheric lines via bisector-method, while variability in Ha and…
We used the Magellan adaptive optics (MagAO) system and its VisAO CCD camera to image the young low mass brown dwarf companion CT Chamaeleontis B for the first time at visible wavelengths. We detect it at r', i', z', and Ys. With our new photometry and Teff~2500 K derived from the shape its K-band spectrum, we find that CT Cha B has Av = 3.4+/-1.1 mag, and a mass of 14-24 Mj according to the DUSTY evolutionary tracks and its 1-5 Myr age. The overluminosity of our r' detection indicates that the companion has significant Halpha emission and a mass accretion rate ~6*10^-10 Msun/yr, similar to so…
We present IRS spectra and revised MIPS photometry for the 18 members of the Eta Chamaeleontis cluster. Aged 8 Myr, the Eta Cha cluster is one of the few nearby regions within the 5-10 Myr age range, during which the disk fraction decreases dramatically and giant planet formation must come to an end. For the 15 low-mass members, we measure a disk fraction ~50%, high for their 8 Myr age, and 4 of the 8 disks lack near-IR excesses, consistent with the empirical definition of "transition'' disks. Most of the disks are comparable to geometrically flat disks. The comparison with regions of differen…
Protoplanetary discs are the birthplace for planets. Studying protoplanetary discs is the key to constraining theories of planet formation. By observing dust and gas in associations at different ages we can study the evolution of these discs, their clearing timescales, and their physical and geometrical properties. The stellar association Eta Cha is peculiar; some members still retain detectable amounts of gas in their discs at the late age of 7 Myr, making it one of the most interesting young stellar associations in the solar neighbourhood. We characterise the properties of dust and gas in pr…
The nearby young open cluster eta Chamaeleontis has been observed by eROSITA/SRG during its CalPV phase for 150 ks. The eROSITA data were taken in the field-scan mode, an observing mode of Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG) that follows a rectangular grid-like pattern, here covering a 5x5 deg field with an exposure depth of about 5 ks. We study the known members in X-rays and search for potential new members of the anticipated dispersed low-mass cluster population. Detected sources were identified by cross-matching X-ray sources with Gaia and 2MASS, and young stars were identified by their X-ray ac…
Although advances in exoplanet detection techniques have seen an increase in discoveries, observing a planet in the earliest stages of formation still remains a difficult task. Here four epochs of spectra of the transitional disk object T Cha are analysed to determine whether spectro-astrometry can be used to detect a signal from its proposed protoplanet, T Cha b. The unique properties of T Cha are also further constrained. Hα and [O I]λ 6300, the most prominent lines, were analysed using spectro-astrometry. Hα being a direct accretion tracer is the target for the T Cha b detection while [O I]…
In the scope of the star formation process, it is unclear how the environment shapes the initial mass function (IMF). While observations of open clusters propose a universal picture for the IMF from the substellar domain up to a few solar masses, the young association eta Chamaeleontis presents an apparent lack of low mass objects (m<0.1 Msun). Another unusual feature of this cluster is the absence of wide binaries with a separation > 50 AU. We aim to test whether dynamical evolution alone can reproduce the peculiar properties of the association assuming a universal IMF. We use a pure N-body c…

We present the results of an optical photometry and high-resolution spectroscopy campaign for a modest sample of X-ray selected stars in the Chamaeleon and Rho Ophiuchus star forming regions. With R~50000 optical spectra, we establish kinematic membership of the parent association and confirm stellar youth for each star in our sample. With the acquisition of new standardized BVIc photometry, in concert with near-infrared data from the literature, we derive age and mass from stellar positions in model-dependent Hertzsprung-Russell diagrams. We compare isochronal ages derived using colour-depend…
We report the discovery of two young M-dwarfs, RX J0942.7-7726 (M1) and 2MASS J09424157-7727130 (M4.5), that were found only 42 arcsec apart in a survey for pre-main sequence stars surrounding the open cluster eta Chamaeleontis. Both stars have congruent proper motions and near-infrared photometry. Medium-resolution spectroscopy reveals that they are coeval (age 8-12 Myr), codistant (100-150 pc) and thus almost certainly form a true wide binary with a projected separation of 4000-6000 AU. The system appears too old and dynamically fragile to have originated in eta Cha and a traceback analysis …
We present a comprehensive investigation of the Epsilon Chamaeleontis association (Epsilon Cha), one of several young moving groups spread across the southern sky. We re-assess the putative membership of Epsilon Cha using the best-available proper motion and spectroscopic measurements, including new ANU 2.3-m/WiFeS observations. After applying a kinematic analysis our final membership comprises 35-41 stars from B9 to mid-M spectral types, with a mean distance of 110+/-7 pc and a mean space motion of (U,V,W)=(-10.9+/-0.8,-20.4+/-1.3,-9.9+/-1.4) km/s. Theoretical evolutionary models suggest Epsi…
Spectral energy distributions are presented for 94 young stars surrounded by disks in the Serpens Molecular Cloud, based on photometry and Spitzer IRS spectra. Taking a distance to the cloud of 415 pc rather than 259 pc, the distribution of ages is shifted to lower values, in the 1-3 Myr range, with a tail up to 10 Myr. The mass distribution spans 0.2-1.2 Msun, with median mass of 0.7 Msun. The distribution of fractional disk luminosities in Serpens resembles that of the young Taurus Molecular Cloud, with most disks consistent with optically thick, passively irradiated disks in a variety of di…
