We revisit the problem of model-based object recognition for intensity images and attempt to address some of the shortcomings of existing Bayesian methods, such as unsuitable priors and the treatment of residuals with a non-robust error norm. We do so by using a refor- mulation of the Huber metric and carefully chosen prior distributions. Our proposed method is invariant to 2-dimensional affine transforma- tions and, because it is relatively easy to train and use, it is suited for general object matching problems.

The dynamics of human skeletons have significant information for the task of action recognition. The similarity between trajectories of corresponding joints is an indicating feature of the same action, while this similarity may subject to some distortions that can be modeled as the combination of spatial and temporal affine transformations. In this work, we propose a novel feature called spatio-temporal dual affine differential invariant (STDADI). Furthermore, in order to improve the generalization ability of neural networks, a channel augmentation method is proposed. On the large scale action…

In this paper, we present a novel affine-invariant feature based on SIFT, leveraging the regular appearance of man-made objects. The feature achieves full affine invariance without needing to simulate over affine parameter space. Low-rank SIFT, as we name the feature, is based on our observation that local tilt, which are caused by changes of camera axis orientation, could be normalized by converting local patches to standard low-rank forms. Rotation, translation and scaling invariance could be achieved in ways similar to SIFT. As an extension of SIFT, our method seeks to add prior to solve th…

In this paper we address the problem of offline Arabic handwriting word recognition. Off-line recognition of handwritten words is a difficult task due to the high variability and uncertainty of human writing. The majority of the recent systems are constrained by the size of the lexicon to deal with and the number of writers. In this paper, we propose an approach for multi-writers Arabic handwritten words recognition using multiple Bayesian networks. First, we cut the image in several blocks. For each block, we compute a vector of descriptors. Then, we use K-means to cluster the low-level featu…

In this paper, we address the problem of hand-drawn sketch recognition. Inspired by the Bayesian decision theory, we present a deep metric learning loss with the objective to minimize the Bayesian risk of misclassification. We estimate this risk for every mini-batch during training, and learn robust deep embeddings by backpropagating it to a deep neural network in an end-to-end trainable paradigm. Our learnt embeddings are discriminative and robust despite of intra-class variations and inter-class similarities naturally present in hand-drawn sketch images. Outperforming the state of the art on…
In this paper, we present a novel Bayesian approach to recover simultaneously block sparse signals in the presence of outliers. The key advantage of our proposed method is the ability to handle non-stationary outliers, i.e. outliers which have time varying support. We validate our approach with empirical results showing the superiority of the proposed method over competing approaches in synthetic data experiments as well as the multiple measurement face recognition problem.

This paper presents a new probabilistic graphical model used to model and recognize words representing the names of Tunisian cities. In fact, this work is based on a dynamic hierarchical Bayesian network. The aim is to find the best model of Arabic handwriting to reduce the complexity of the recognition process by permitting the partial recognition. Actually, we propose a segmentation of the word based on smoothing the vertical histogram projection using different width values to reduce the error of segmentation. Then, we extract the characteristics of each cell using the Zernike and HU moment…

Group emotion recognition in the wild is a challenging problem, due to the unstructured environments in which everyday life pictures are taken. Some of the obstacles for an effective classification are occlusions, variable lighting conditions, and image quality. In this work we present a solution based on a novel combination of deep neural networks and Bayesian classifiers. The neural network works on a bottom-up approach, analyzing emotions expressed by isolated faces. The Bayesian classifier estimates a global emotion integrating top-down features obtained through a scene descriptor. In orde…

Face recognition (FR) is an important task in pattern recognition and computer vision. Sparse representation (SR) has been demonstrated to be a powerful framework for FR. In general, an SR algorithm treats each face in a training dataset as a basis function, and tries to find a sparse representation of a test face under these basis functions. The sparse representation coefficients then provide a recognition hint. Early SR algorithms are based on a basic sparse model. Recently, it has been found that algorithms based on a block sparse model can achieve better recognition rates. Based on this mo…
We demonstrate that a generative model for object shapes can achieve state of the art results on challenging scene text recognition tasks, and with orders of magnitude fewer training images than required for competing discriminative methods. In addition to transcribing text from challenging images, our method performs fine-grained instance segmentation of characters. We show that our model is more robust to both affine transformations and non-affine deformations compared to previous approaches.

As autonomous decision-making agents move from narrow operating environments to unstructured worlds, learning systems must move from a closed-world formulation to an open-world and few-shot setting in which agents continuously learn new classes from small amounts of information. This stands in stark contrast to modern machine learning systems that are typically designed with a known set of classes and a large number of examples for each class. In this work we extend embedding-based few-shot learning algorithms to the open-world recognition setting. We combine Bayesian non-parametric class prio…

Current face recognition systems robustly recognize identities across a wide variety of imaging conditions. In these systems recognition is performed via classification into known identities obtained from supervised identity annotations. There are two problems with this current paradigm: (1) current systems are unable to benefit from unlabelled data which may be available in large quantities; and (2) current systems equate successful recognition with labelling a given input image. Humans, on the other hand, regularly perform identification of individuals completely unsupervised, recognising th…

In many real-world applications, image data often come with noises, corruptions or large errors. One approach to deal with noise image data is to use data recovery techniques which aim to recover the true uncorrupted signals from the observed noise images. In this paper, we first introduce a novel corruption recovery transformation (CRT) model which aims to recover multiple (or a collection of) corrupted images using a single affine transformation. Then, we show that the introduced CRT can be efficiently constructed through learning from training data. Once CRT is learned, we can recover the t…

We present a new approach for recognition of complex graphic symbols in technical documents. Graphic symbol recognition is a well known challenge in the field of document image analysis and is at heart of most graphic recognition systems. Our method uses structural approach for symbol representation and statistical classifier for symbol recognition. In our system we represent symbols by their graph based signatures: a graphic symbol is vectorized and is converted to an attributed relational graph, which is used for computing a feature vector for the symbol. This signature corresponds to geomet…

Capturing reliable uncertainty estimates in safety and security critical applications will help to establish trust in the AI system. Our contribution is to apply Bayesian deep learning framework to visual activity recognition application and quantify model uncertainty along with principled confidence. We utilize the stoc…
Object recognition is an important task in image processing and computer vision. This paper presents a perfect method for object recognition with full boundary detection by combining affine scale invariant feature transform (ASIFT) and a region merging algorithm. ASIFT is a fully affine invariant algorithm that means features are invariant to six affine parameters namely translation (2 parameters), zoom, rotation and two camera axis orientations. The features are very reliable and give us strong keypoints that can be used for matching between different images of an object. We trained an object…

This paper proposes a statistical approach to 2D pose estimation from human images. The main problems with the standard supervised approach, which is based on a deep recognition (image-to-pose) model, are that it often yields anatomically implausible poses, and its performance is limited by the amount of paired data. To solve these problems, we propose a semi-supervised method that can make effective use of images with and without pose annotations. Specifically, we formulate a hierarchical generative model of poses and images by integrating a deep generative model of poses from pose features w…
Image feature matching is to seek, localize and identify the similarities across the images. The matched local features between different images can indicate the similarities of their content. Resilience of image feature matching to large view point changes is challenging for a lot of applications such as 3D object reconstruction, object recognition and navigation, etc, which need accurate and robust feature matching from quite different view points. In this paper we propose a novel image feature matching algorithm, integrating our previous proposed Affine Invariant Feature Detector (AIFD) and…

This paper tackles the problem of efficient video recognition. In this area, video transformers have recently dominated the efficiency (top-1 accuracy vs FLOPs) spectrum. At the same time, there have been some attempts in the image domain which challenge the necessity of the self-attention operation within the transformer architecture, advocating the use of simpler approaches for token mixing. However, there are no results yet for the case of video recognition, where the self-attention operator has a significantly higher impact (compared to the case of images) on efficiency. To address this ga…

An interesting development in automatic visual recognition has been the emergence of tasks where it is not possible to assign objective labels to images, yet still feasible to collect annotations that reflect human judgements about them. Machine learning-based predictors for these tasks rely on supervised training that models the behavior of the annotators, i.e., what would the average person's judgement be for an image? A key open question for this type of work, especially for applications where inconsistency with human behavior can lead to ethical lapses, is how to evaluate the epistemic unc…

Facial emotion recognition is the task to classify human emotions in face images. It is a difficult task due to high aleatoric uncertainty and visual ambiguity. A large part of the literature aims to show progress by increasing accuracy on this task, but this ignores the inherent uncertainty and ambiguity in the task. In this paper we show that Bayesian Neural Networks, as approximated using MC-Dropout, MC-DropConnect, or an Ensemble, are able to model the aleatoric uncertainty in facial emotion recognition, and produce output probabilities that are closer to what a human expects. We also show…

A comprehensive artificial intelligence system needs to not only perceive the environment with different `senses' (e.g., seeing and hearing) but also infer the world's conditional (or even causal) relations and corresponding uncertainty. The past decade has seen major advances in many perception tasks such as visual object recognition and speech recognition using deep learning models. For higher-level inference, however, probabilistic graphical models with their Bayesian nature are still more powerful and flexible. In recent years, Bayesian deep learning has emerged as a unified probabilistic …
