Once mixed in the ambient galactic plane stellar population, young stars are virtually indiscernible because neither their global photometric properties nor the presence of nearby gas can help to disentangle them from older ones. Nevertheless, the study of the RasTyc sample revealed 4 lithium-rich field stars displaying the same space motion, which are located within a few degrees from each other on the celestial sphere near the Cepheus-Cassiopeia complex and at a similar distance from the Sun. Both physical and kinematical indicators show that all these stars are young, with ages in the range 10-30 Myr. Using multivariate analysis methods, we selected optical counterparts of ROSAT All-Sky Survey / XMM-Newton X-ray sources cross-identified with late-type stars around these 4 young stars. Recent spectroscopic observations of this sample allowed us to discover additional lithium-rich sources. Our preliminary results showed that some of them share the same space motion as the 4 young comoving stars. They have properties rather similar to the members of the TW Hydrae association, although they seem to be slightly older and are located in the northern hemisphere. Nearby young stars in the field are of great importance to understand the recent local history of star formation, as well as to give new insight into the process of star formation outside standard star-forming regions and to study the evolution of circumstellar discs.
We report on observation and determination of rotational periods of ten weak-line T Tauri stars in the Cepheus-Cassiopeia star-forming region. Observations were carried out with the Cassegrain-Teleskop-Kamera (CTK) at University Observatory Jena between 2007 June and 2008 May. The periods obtained range between 0.49 d and 5.7 d, typical for weak-line and post T Tauri stars.
We present the results of multi-epoch very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) water (H2O) maser observations carried out with the VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry (VERA) toward the Cepheus A HW3d object. We measured for the first time relative proper motions of the H2O maser features, whose spatio-kinematics traces a compact bipolar outflow. This outflow looks highly collimated and expanding through ~ 280 AU (400 mas) at a mean velocity of ~ 21 km/s (~ 6 mas/yr) without taking into account the turbulent central maser cluster. The opening angle of the outflow is estimated to be ~ 30{\circ}…
We present a photometric study of I-band variability in the young association Cepheus OB3b. The study is sensitive to periodic variability on timescales of less than a day, to more than 20 days. After rejection of contaminating objects using V, I, R and narrowband H-alpha photometry, we find 475 objects with measured rotation periods, which are very likely pre-main-sequence members of the Cep OB3b star forming region. We revise the distance and age to Cep OB3b, putting it on the self-consistent age and distance ladder of Mayne & Naylor (2008). This yields a distance modulus of 8.8 +/- 0.2 mags…
Young field stars are hardly distinguishable from older ones because their space motion rapidly mixes them with the stellar population of the Galactic plane. Nevertheless, a careful target selection allows for young stars to be spotted throughout the sky. We aim to identify additional sources associated with the four young comoving stars that we discovered towards the CO Cepheus void and to provide a comprehensive view of the Cepheus association. Based on multivariate analysis methods, we have built an extended sample of 193 young star candidates, which are the optical and infrared counterpart…
Results from optical CCD photometric observations of 13 pre-main-sequence stars collected during the period from February 2007 to November 2020 are presented. These stars are located in the association Cepheus OB3, in the field of the young star V733 Cephei. Photometric observations, especially concerning the long-term variability of the stars, are missing in the literature. We present the first long-term $V(RI)_{c}$ monitoring for them, that cover 13 years. Results from our study indicate that all of the investigated stars manifest strong photometric variability. The presented paper is a part…
During the course of a large spectroscopic survey of X-ray active late-type stars in the solar neighbourhood, we discovered four lithium-rich stars packed within just a few degrees on the sky. These very young stars are projected several degrees away from the Cepheus-Cassiopea clouds, in front of an area void of interstellar matter. As such, they are very good "isolated" T Tauri star candidates. We acquired high-resolution optical spectra as well as photometric data allowing us to investigate in detail their nature and physical parameters with the aim of testing the "runaway" and "in-situ" for…
OB associations are home to newly formed massive stars, whose turbulent winds and ionizing flux create H II regions rich with star formation. Studying the distribution and abundance of young stellar objects (YSOs) in these ionized bubbles can provide essential insight into the physical processes that shape their formation, allowing us to test competing models of star formation. In this work, we examined one such OB association, Cepheus OB4 (Cep OB4) - a well-suited region for studying YSOs due to its Galactic location, proximity, and geometry. We created a photometric catalog from Spitzer/IRAC…
OB associations, birthplaces of the most luminous stars, are key objects for understanding the formation of high-mass stars and their effects on their environments. The aim of this work is to explore the structure and kinematics of the Cepheus OB2 association and characterize the history of star formation in the region -- in particular, the role of the Cepheus Bubble, surrounding Cepheus OB2. Based on \gaia\ DR3 data we study the spatial and age distribution and kinematics of young stars in the region. We select candidate pre-main-sequence stars in the $M_\mathrm{G}$ vs. \gbp$-$\grp\ colour-ma…
We present results of optical spectroscopic and BVR_CI_C photometric observations of 77 pre-main sequence (PMS) stars in the Cepheus flare region. A total of 64 of these are newly confirmed PMS stars, originally selected from various published candidate lists. We estimate effective temperatures and luminosities for the PMS stars, and comparing the results with pre-main sequence evolutionary models we estimate stellar masses of 0.2-2.4M_sun and stellar ages of 0.1-15 Myr. Among the PMS stars, we identify 15 visual binaries with separations of 2-10 arcsec. From archival IRAS, 2MASS, and Spitzer …
We have measured the internal proper motions of the 6.7 GHz methanol masers associated with Cepheus A (Cep A) HW2 using Very Long Baseline Interferometery (VLBI) observations. We conducted three epochs of VLBI monitoring observations of the 6.7 GHz methanol masers in Cep A-HW2 with the Japanese VLBI Network (JVN) over the period between 2006-2008. In 2006, we were able to use phase-referencing to measure the absolute coordinates of the maser emission with an accuracy of a few milliarcseconds. We compared the maser distribution with other molecular line observations that trace the rotating disk…
The presence of three more Herbig Ae/Be (HAeBe) stars in the Cepheus Flare within a 1.5$^{\circ}$ radius centered on HD 200775 suggests that star formation is prevalent in a wider region of the LDN 1147/1158, LDN 1172/1174, and LDN 1177 clouds. A number of young stellar objects (YSOs) are also found to be located toward these clouds. Various star formation studies indicate ongoing low-mass star formation inside this region. Sources associated with less near-infrared (IR) excess and less H-alpha emission raise the possibility that more low-mass YSOs, which were not identified in previous studie…
We present new results on the young star population of the Lynds~1188 molecular cloud, associated with the Cepheus Bubble, a giant interstellar shell around the association Cep~OB\,2. In order to reveal the star-forming scenario of the molecular cloud located on the supershell, and understand the history of star formation in the region, we identified and characterized young star candidates based on an H$α$ emission survey and various published photometric datasets. Using Gaia DR2 astrometry we studied the spatial distribution of the young star candidates and isolated three groups based on thei…
Young stellar populations provide a record of past star formation, and by establishing their members' dynamics and ages, it is possible to reconstruct the full history of star formation events. Gaia has greatly expanded the number of accessible stellar populations, with one of the most notable recently-discovered associations being Cepheus Far North (CFN), a population containing hundreds of members spanning over 100 pc. With its proximity (d $\lesssim$ 200 pc), apparent substructure, and relatively small population, CFN represents a manageable population to study in depth, with enough evidenc…
We present an analysis of the rotation of young stars in the associations Cepheus OB3b, NGC 2264, NGC 2362 and the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC). We discover a correlation between rotation rate and position in a colour-magnitude diagram (CMD) such that stars which lie above an empirically determined median pre-main sequence rotate more rapidly than stars which lie below this sequence. The same correlation is seen, with a high degree of statistical significance, in each association studied here. If position within the CMD is interpreted as being due to genuine age spreads within a cluster, then th…
We study the three dimensional arrangement of young stars in the solar neighbourhood using the second release of the Gaia mission (Gaia DR2) and we provide a new, original view of the spatial configuration of the star forming regions within 500 pc from the Sun. By smoothing the star distribution through a gaussian filter, we construct three dimensional density maps for early-type stars (upper-main sequence, UMS) and pre-main sequence (PMS) sources. The PMS and the UMS samples are selected through a combination of photometric and astrometric criteria. A side product of the analysis is a three d…
The Cepheus B (CepB) molecular cloud and a portion of the nearby CepOB3b OB association, one of the most active regions of star formation within 1 kpc, have been observed with the IRAC detector on board the Spitzer Space Telescope. The goals are to study protoplanetary disk evolution and processes of sequential triggered star formation in the region. Out of ~400 pre-main sequence (PMS) stars selected with an earlier Chandra X-ray Observatory observation, 95% are identified with mid-infrared sources and most of these are classified as diskless or disk-bearing stars. The discovery of the additio…
(abridge) The nearby young stellar association Epsilon Cha association has an estimated age of 3-5 Myr, making it an ideal laboratory to study the disk dissipation process and provide empirical constraints on the timescale of planet formation. We combine the available literature data with our Spitzer IRS spectroscopy and VLT/VISIR imaging data. The very low mass stars USNO-B120144.7 and 2MASS J12005517 show globally depleted spectral energy distributions pointing at strong dust settling. 2MASS J12014343 may have a disk with a very specific inclination where the central star is effectively scre…
Contemporary theory holds that massive stars gather mass during their initial phases via accreting disk-like structures. However, conclusive evidence for disks has remained elusive for the most massive young objects. This is mainly due to significant observational challenges. Incisive studies, even targeting individual objects, are therefore relevant to the progression of the field. NGC 3603 IRS 9A* is a young massive stellar object still surrounded by an envelope of molecular gas. Previous mid-infrared observations with long-baseline interferometry provided evidence for a disk of 50 mas diame…
In this work, we identify 63 bona fide new candidates to T Tauri stars (TTSs) in the Taurus-Auriga region using as baseline its ultraviolet excess. The initial data set has been defined from the GALEX all sky survey (AIS). The GALEX satellite obtained images in the near ultraviolet (NUV) and far ultraviolet (FUV) bands where the TTSs show a prominent excess, compared with main sequence or giants stars. GALEX AIS surveyed the Taurus-Auriga molecular complex, as well as, a fraction of the California Nebula and the Perseus complex; bright sources and the dark clouds themselves are avoided. The pr…
We investigate the relation of the stellar initial mass function (IMF) and the dense core mass function (CMF), using stellar masses and positions in 14 well-studied young groups. Initial column density maps are computed by replacing each star with a model initial core having the same star formation efficiency (SFE). For each group the SFE, core model, and observational resolution are varied to produce a realistic range of initial maps. A clumpfinding algorithm parses each initial map into derived cores, derived core masses, and a derived CMF. The main result is that projected blending of initi…
Main sequence turnoff ages in young open clusters are complicated by turnoffs that are sparse, have high binarity fractions, can be affected by differential reddening, and typically include a number of peculiar stars. Furthermore, stellar rotation can have a significant effect on a star's photometry and evolutionary timescale. In this paper we analyze in 12 nearby open clusters, ranging from ages of 50 Myr to 350 Myr, how broadband UBV color-color relations can be used to identify turnoff stars that are Be stars, blue stragglers, certain types of binaries, or those affected by differential red…
We aim to characterize the distribution and composition of circumstellar material around young massive stars, and to investigate exactly which physical structures in these objects are probed by long-baseline mid-infrared interferometric observations. We used the two-telescope interferometric instrument MIDI of the Very Large Telescope Interferometer of the European Southern Observatory to observe a sample of 24 intermediate- and high-mass young stellar objects in the N band (8-13 micron). We had successful fringe detections for 20 objects, and present spectrally-resolved correlated fluxes and …
We present the results of a long term orbit monitoring program, using sparse aperture masking observations taken with NIRC2 on the Keck-II telescope, of seven G to M-type members of the Upper Scorpius subgroup of the Sco-Cen OB association. We present astrometry and derived orbital elements of the binary systems we have monitored, and also determine the age, component masses, distance and reddening for each system using the orbital solutions and multi-band photometry, including Hubble Space Telescope photometry, and a Bayesian fitting procedure. We find that the models can be forced into agree…
We have used fibre spectroscopy to establish cluster membership and examine pre-main-sequence (PMS) lithium depletion for low-mass stars (spectral types F to M) in the sparse young (~30 Myr) cluster IC 4665. We present a filtered candidate list of 40 stars that should contain 75 per cent of single cluster members with V of 11.5 to 18 in the central square degree of the cluster. Whilst F- and G-type stars in IC 4665 have depleted little or no lithium, the K- and early M-type stars have depleted more Li than expected when compared with similar stars in other clusters of known age. An empirical a…
The young (~16 Myr) pre-main-sequence star in Sco-Cen 1SWASP J140747.93-394542.6, hereafter referred to as J1407, underwent a deep eclipse in 2007 April, bracketed by several shallower eclipses in the surrounding 54 d. This has been interpreted as the first detection of an eclipsing ring system circling a substellar object (dubbed J1407b). We report on a search for this companion with Sparse Aperture Mask imaging and direct imaging with both the UT4 VLT and Keck telescopes. Radial velocity measurements of J1407 provide additional constraints on J1407b and on short period companions to the cent…

The distribution of young stars found in the Chandra Carina Complex Project (CCCP) is examined for clustering structure. X-ray surveys are advantageous for identifying young stellar populations compared to optical and infrared surveys in suffering less contamination from nebular emission and Galactic field stars. The analysis is based on smoothed maps of a spatially complete subsample of about 3000 brighter X-ray sources classified as Carina members, and about 10,000 stars from the full CCCP sample. The principal known clusters are recovered, and some additional smaller groups are identified. …

The Massive Young Star Forming Complex in Infrared and X-ray (MYStIX) project provides a new census on stellar members of massive star forming regions within 4 kpc. Here the MYStIX Infrared Excess catalog (MIRES) and Chandra-based X-ray photometric catalogs are mined to obtain high-quality samples of Class I protostars using criteria designed to reduce extragalactic and Galactic field star contamination. A total of 1,109 MYStIX Candidate Protostars (MCPs) are found in 14 star forming regions. Most are selected from protoplanetary disk infrared excess emission, but 20% are found from their ultr…
The kinematics of young stellar population in the W5 region of the Cassiopeia OB6 association: implication on the formation process of stellar associations
Star clusters are key to understand the stellar and Galactic evolution. ASCC 123 is a little-studied, nearby and very sparse open cluster. We performed the first high-resolution spectroscopic study of this cluster in the framework of the SPA (Stellar Population Astrophysics) project with GIARPS at the TNG. We observed 17 stars, five of which turned out to be double-lined binaries. Three of the investigated sources were rejected as members on the basis of astrometry and lithium content. For the remaining single stars we derived the stellar parameters, extinction, radial and projected rotational…
As part of a wider investigation of evolved massive stars in Galactic open clusters, we have spectroscopically identified three candidate classical Cepheids in the little-studied clusters Berkeley 51, Berkeley 55 and NGC 6603. Using new multi-epoch photometry, we confirm that Be 51 #162 and Be 55 #107 are bona fide Cepheids, with pulsation periods of 9.83+/-0.01 d and 5.850+/-0.005 d respectively, while NGC 6603 star W2249 does not show significant photometric variability. Using the period-luminosity relationship for Cepheid variables, we determine a distance to Be 51 of 5.3(+1.0,-0.8) kpc and…
Open clusters belonging to star-forming complexes are the leftovers from the initial stellar generations. The study of these young systems provides constraints to models of star formation and evolution as well as to the properties of the Galactic disc. We aimed at investigating NGC1981, a young open cluster in the Orion Nebula Region, using near-IR and BV (RI)C photometric data.We devised a method that accounts for the field contamination and allows to derive photometric membership for the cluster stars. A new cluster centre was determined by Gaussian fittings to the 2-D stellar distribution o…
We present a study of accretion and protoplanetary disks around M-type stars in the 4 Myr-old cluster Tr37. With a well-studied solar-type population, Tr37 is a benchmark for disk evolution. We used low-resolution spectroscopy to identify 141 members (78 new) and 64 probable members, mostly M-type stars. Hα emission provides information about accretion. Optical, 2MASS, Spitzer, and WISE data are used to trace the SEDs. We construct radiative transfer models to explore the structures of full-disks, pre-transition, transition, and dust-depleted disks. Including the new and previously known membe…
Observational data on companion statistics around young stellar systems is needed to flesh out the formation pathways for extrasolar planets and brown dwarfs. Aperture masking is a new technique that is able to address an important part of this discovery space. We observed the two debris disk systems HD 92945 and HD 141569 with sparse aperture masking (SAM), a new mode offered on the NaCo instrument at the VLT. A search for faint companions was performed using a detection strategy based on the analysis of closure phases recovered from interferograms recorded on the Conica camera. Our results d…
We explore here the young stellar populations in the Rosette Molecular Cloud (RMC) region with high spatial resolution X-ray images from the Chandra X-ray Observatory, which are effective in locating weak-lined T Tauri stars as well as disk-bearing young stars. A total of 395 X-ray point sources are detected, 299 of which (76%) have an optical or near-infrared (NIR) counterpart identified from deep FLAMINGOS images. From X-ray and mass sensitivity limits, we infer a total population of about 1700 young stars in the survey region. Based on smoothed stellar surface density maps, we investigate t…
