We investigate relations between different width parameters of graphs, in particular balanced separator number, treewidth, and cycle rank. Our main result states that a graph with balanced separator number k has treewidth at least k but cycle rank at most k(1 + log (n/k)), thus refining the previously known bounds, as stated by Robertson and Seymour (1986) and by Bodlaender et al. (1995). Furthermore, we show that the improved bounds are best possible.

Partitioning a graph using graph separators, and particularly clique separators, are well-known techniques to decompose a graph into smaller units which can be treated independently. It was previously known that the treewidth was bounded above by the sum of the size of the separator plus the treewidth of disjoint components, and this was obtained by the heuristic of filling in all edges of the separator making it into a clique. In this paper, we present a new, tighter upper bound on the treewidth of a graph obtained by only partially filling in the edges of a separator. In particular, the meth…
We give polynomial-time approximation schemes for monotone maximization problems expressible in terms of distances (up to a fixed upper bound) and efficiently solvable in graphs of bounded treewidth. These schemes apply in all fractionally treewidth-fragile graph classes, a property that is true for many natural graph classes with sublinear separators. We also provide quasipolynomial-time approximation schemes for these problems in all classes with sublinear separators.
We prove that if every subgraph of a graph $G$ has a balanced separation of order at most $a$ then $G$ has treewidth at most $15a$. This establishes a linear dependence between the treewidth and the separation number.
We present a method for reducing the treewidth of a graph while preserving all of its minimal $s-t$ separators up to a certain fixed size $k$. This technique allows us to solve $s-t$ Cut and Multicut problems with various additional restrictions (e.g., the vertices being removed from the graph form an independent set or induce a connected graph) in linear time for every fixed number $k$ of removed vertices. Our results have applications for problems that are not directly defined by separators, but the known solution methods depend on some variant of separation. for example, we can solve simila…
In this work we consider balanced Schnyder woods for planar graphs, which are Schnyder woods where the number of incoming edges of each color at each vertex is balanced as much as possible. We provide a simple linear-time heuristic leading to obtain well balanced Schnyder woods in practice. As test applications we consider two important algorithmic problems: the computation of Schnyder drawings and of small cycle separators. While not being able to provide theoretical guarantees, our experimental results (on a wide collection of planar graphs) suggest that the use of balanced Schnyder woods le…

Let G be a subgraph-closed graph class with bounded maximum degree. We show that if G has balanced separators whose size is smaller than linear by a polynomial factor, then G has subexponential expansion. This gives a partial converse to a result of Nešetřil and Ossona de Mendez. As an intermediate step, the proof uses a new kind of graph decompositions.
For real numbers c,epsilon>0, let G_{c,epsilon} denote the class of graphs G such that each subgraph H of G has a balanced separator of order at most c|V(H)|^{1-epsilon}. A class of graphs has strongly sublinear separators if it is a subclass of G_{c,epsilon} for some c,epsilon>0. We investigate properties of such graph classes, leading in particular to an approximate algorithm to determine membership in G_{c,epsilon}: there exist c'>0 such that for each input graph G, this algorithm in polynomial time determines either that G belongs to G_{c',epsilon^2/160}, or that G does not belong to G_{c,…
We study the problem of embedding a guest graph with minimum edge-congestion into a multidimensional grid with the same size as that of the guest graph. Based on a well-known notion of graph separators, we show that an embedding with a smaller edge-congestion can be obtained if the guest graph has a smaller separator, and if the host grid has a higher but constant dimension. Specifically, we prove that any graph with $N$ nodes, maximum node degree $Δ$, and with a node-separator of size $O(n^α)$ ($0\leqα<1$) can be embedded into a grid of a fixed dimension $d\geq 2$ with at least $N$ nodes, wit…
We present a method for reducing the treewidth of a graph while preserving all the minimal $s-t$ separators. This technique turns out to be very useful for establishing the fixed-parameter tractability of constrained separation and bipartization problems. To demonstrate the power of this technique, we prove the fixed-parameter tractability of a number of well-known separation and bipartization problems with various additional restrictions (e.g., the vertices being removed from the graph form an independent set). These results answer a number of open questions in the area of parameterized compl…
We prove a geometric version of the graph separator theorem for the unit disk intersection graph: for any set of $n$ unit disks in the plane there exists a line $\ell$ such that $\ell$ intersects at most $O(\sqrt{(m+n)\log{n}})$ disks and each of the halfplanes determined by $\ell$ contains at most $2n/3$ unit disks from the set, where $m$ is the number of intersecting pairs of disks. We also show that an axis-parallel line intersecting $O(\sqrt{m+n})$ disks exists, but each halfplane may contain up to $4n/5$ disks. We give an almost tight lower bound (up to sublogarithmic factors) for our app…
Inspired by a question of Yannakakis on the Vertex Packing polytope of perfect graphs, we study the Clique-Stable Set Separation in a non-hereditary subclass of perfect graphs. A cut (B,W) of G (a bipartition of V(G)) separates a clique K and a stable set S if $K\subseteq B$ and $S\subseteq W$. A Clique-Stable Set Separator is a family of cuts such that for every clique K, and for every stable set S disjoint from K, there exists a cut in the family that separates K and S. Given a class of graphs, the question is to know whether every graph of the class admits a Clique-Stable Set Separator cont…
The traditional multi-commodity flow problem assumes a given flow network in which multiple commodities are to be maximally routed in response to given demands. This paper considers the multi-commodity flow network-design problem: given a set of multi-commodity flow demands, find a network subject to certain constraints such that the commodities can be maximally routed. This paper focuses on the case when the network is required to be a tree. The main result is an approximation algorithm for the case when the tree is required to be of constant degree. The algorithm reduces the problem to the m…
Kloks, Kratsch, and Spinrad showed how treewidth and minimum-fill, NP-hard combinatorial optimization problems related to minimal triangulations, are broken into subproblems by block subgraphs defined by minimal separators. These ideas were expanded on by Bouchitté and Todinca, who used potential maximal cliques to solve these problems using a dynamic programming approach in time polynomial in the number of minimal separators of a graph. It is known that solutions to the perfect phylogeny problem, maximum compatibility problem, and unique perfect phylogeny problem are characterized by minimal …
An intersection graph of curves in the plane is called a string graph. Matousek almost completely settled a conjecture of the authors by showing that every string graph of m edges admits a vertex separator of size O(\sqrt{m}\log m). In the present note, this bound is combined with a result of the authors, according to which every dense string graph contains a large complete balanced bipartite graph. Three applications are given concerning string graphs G with n vertices: (i) if K_t is not a subgraph of G for some t, then the chromatic number of G is at most (\log n)^{O(\log t)}; (ii) if K_{t,t…
In this article we study the treewidth of the \emph{display graph}, an auxiliary graph structure obtained from the fusion of phylogenetic (i.e., evolutionary) trees at their leaves. Earlier work has shown that the treewidth of the display graph is bounded if the trees are in some formal sense topologically similar. Here we further expand upon this relationship. We analyse a number of reduction rules which are commonly used in the phylogenetics literature to obtain fixed parameter tractable algorithms. In some cases (the \emph{subtree} reduction) the reduction rules behave similarly with respec…
Partitioning the vertices of a graph into two roughly equal parts while minimizing the number of edges crossing the cut is a fundamental problem (called Balanced Separator) that arises in many settings. For this problem, and variants such as the Uniform Sparsest Cut problem where the goal is to minimize the fraction of pairs on opposite sides of the cut that are connected by an edge, there are large gaps between the known approximation algorithms and non-approximability results. While no constant factor approximation algorithms are known, even APX-hardness is not known either. In this work we …

Let $G$ be a connected $n$-vertex graph in a proper minor-closed class $\mathcal G$. We prove that the extension complexity of the spanning tree polytope of $G$ is $O(n^{3/2})$. This improves on the $O(n^2)$ bounds following from the work of Wong (1980) and Martin (1991). It also extends a result of Fiorini, Huynh, Joret, and Pashkovich (2017), who obtained a $O(n^{3/2})$ bound for graphs embedded in a fixed surface. Our proof works more generally for all graph classes admitting strongly sublinear balanced separators: We prove that for every constant $β$ with $0<β<1$, if $\mathcal G$ is a grap…
