We compute analytically the anisotropic flow in an expanding mixture of several species of relativistic massive particles. We find that a single collision per particle in average already leads to sizable elliptic flow, with mass ordering between the species.
We consider the development of anisotropic flow in an expanding system of particles undergoing very few rescatterings, using a kinetic-theoretical description with a nonlinear collision term. We derive the scaling behaviors of the harmonic coefficients $v_n$ with the initial-state eccentricities and the mean number of rescatterings, and argue that hexagonal flow $v_6$ should follow a nontrivial behavior, different from that of the lower harmonics. Our findings should be observable in experimental data for small systems.
We determine the dynamical attractors associated with anisotropic hydrodynamics (aHydro) and the DNMR equations for a 0+1d conformal system using kinetic theory in the relaxation time approximation. We compare our results to the non-equilibrium attractor obtained from exact solution of the 0+1d conformal Boltzmann equation, Navier-Stokes theory, and second-order Mueller-Israel-Stewart theory. We demonstrate that the aHydro attractor equation resums an infinite number of terms in the inverse Reynolds number. The resulting resummed aHydro attractor possesses a positive longitudinal to transverse…
We generalize the hard-thermal-loop effective action of the equilibrium quark-gluon plasma to a non-equilibrium system which is space-time homogeneous but for which the parton momentum distribution is anisotropic. We show that the manifestly gauge-invariant Braaten-Pisarski form of the effective action can be straightforwardly generalized and we verify that it then generates all n-point functions following from collisionless gauge-covariant transport theory for a homogeneous anisotropic plasma. On the other hand, the Taylor-Wong form of the hard-thermal-loop effective action has a more complic…
Prior studies of non-equilibrium dynamics using anisotropic hydrodynamics have used the relativistic Anderson-Witting scattering kernel or some variant thereof. In this paper, we make the first study of the impact of using a more realistic scattering kernel. For this purpose, we consider a conformal system undergoing transversally-homogenous and boost-invariant Bjorken expansion and take the collisional kernel to be given by the leading order 2 <-> 2 scattering kernel in scalar lambda phi^4. We consider both classical and quantum statistics in order to assess the impact of Bose enhancement on …
We calculate the $p_T$ distributions of jet conversion photons from {\em Quark Gluon Plasma} with pre-equilibrium momentum-space anisotropy. A phenomenological model has been used for the time evolution of hard momentum scale $p_{\rm hard}(τ)$ and anisotropy parameter $ξ(τ)$. As a result of pre-equilibrium momentum-space anisotropy, we find significant modification of the jet conversion photon $p_T$ distribution. For example, with {\em fixed initial condition} (FIC) pre-equilibrium anisotropy, we predict significant enhancement of the jet-photon $p_T$ distribution in the entire region, whereas…
We calculate leading-order medium photon and dilepton yields from a quark-gluon plasma using (3+1)-dimensional anisotropic hydrodynamics. In the case of dileptons, at leading-order it is sufficient to take into account non-equilibrium corrections to the rate through the use of anisotropic distribution functions. In the case of photons, non-equilibrium corrections to the rate are taken into account using a self-consistent modification of the distribution functions and the corresponding anisotropic hard-loop quark self-energies. We present predictions for the high-energy photon and dilepton spec…
We develop a far-from-equilibrium hydrodynamic model to evolve ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions in event-by-event simulations. Anisotropic hydrodynamics is designed to better handle the strong and highly anisotropic expansion during the early stages of the collision. The large gradients cause conventional second-order viscous hydrodynamic approaches to break down at early times. Anisotropic hydrodynamics evolves the large pressure anisotropies present in the quark-gluon plasma non-perturbatively, which prevents negative longitudinal pressures from developing even under extreme conditions…
We study the far-off-equilibrium dynamics of a Bjorken expanding non-conformal system within kinetic theory and hydrodynamics. We show that, in contrast to the conformal case, neither shear nor bulk viscous pressure relax quickly to a non-equilibrium attractor. In kinetic theory an early-time, far-from-equilibrium attractor exists for the scaled longitudinal pressure, driven by the rapid longitudinal expansion of the medium. Second-order dissipative hydrodynamics fails to accurately describe this attractor, but a modified anisotropic hydrodynamic formulation reproduces it and provides excellen…
Isolated quantum systems in extreme conditions can exhibit unusually large occupancies per mode. This over-population gives rise to new universality classes of many-body systems far from equilibrium. We present theoretical evidence that important aspects of non-Abelian plasmas in the ultra-relativistic limit admit a dual description in terms of a Bose condensed scalar field theory.
In heavy-ion collisions, the quark-gluon plasma is produced far from equilibrium. This regime is currently inaccessible by quantum chromodynamics (QCD) computations. We calculate shear transport and entropy far from equilibrium in a holographic model, defining a time-dependent ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density, $η/s$. Large deviations of up to 60% from its near-equilibrium value, $1/4π$, are found for realistic situations at the Large Hadron Collider. We predict the far-from-equilibrium time-dependence of $η/s$ to substantially affect the evolution of the QCD plasma and to impact the…
We present VAH, a (3+1)-dimensional simulation that evolves the far-from-equilibrium quark-gluon plasma produced in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions with anisotropic fluid dynamics. We solve the hydrodynamic equations on an Eulerian grid using the Kurganov-Tadmor algorithm in combination with a new adaptive Runge-Kutta method. Our numerical scheme allows us to start the simulation soon after the nuclear collision, largely avoiding the need to integrate it with a separate pre-equilibrium dynamics module. We test the code's performance by simulating on the Eulerian grid conformal and non-c…
We calculate leading-order dilepton yields from a quark-gluon plasma which has a time-dependent anisotropy in momentum space. Such anisotropies can arise during the earliest stages of quark-gluon plasma evolution due to the rapid longitudinal expansion of the created matter. Two phenomenological models for the proper time dependence of the parton hard momentum scale, p_hard, and the plasma anisotropy parameter, xi, are constructed which describe the transition of the plasma from its initial non-equilibrium state to an isotropic thermalized state. The first model constructed interpolates betwee…
Using gauge/gravity duality, we study emission and absorption rates of scalar quanta from far-from-equilibrium N = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills plasma. By comparing the emission and absorption rates to expectations from the Fluctuation-Dissipation Theorem, we study how the spectrum thermalizes and how the thermalization time depends on the four momentum of the emitted quanta.
Prescaling is a far-from-equilibrium phenomenon which describes the rapid establishment of a universal scaling form of distributions much before the universal values of their scaling exponents are realized. We consider the example of the spatio-temporal evolution of the quark-gluon plasma explored in heavy-ion collisions at sufficiently high energies. Solving QCD kinetic theory with elastic and inelastic processes, we demonstrate that the gluon and quark distributions very quickly adapt a self-similar scaling form, which is independent of initial condition details and system parameters. The dy…
We study the energy loss of a heavy quark propagating through the matter produced in the collision of two sheets of energy [1]. Even though this matter is initially far-from-equilibrium we find that, when written in terms of the energy density, the equilibrium expression for heavy quark energy loss describes most qualitative features of our results well. At later times, once a plasma described by viscous hydrodynamics has formed, the equilibrium expression describes the heavy quark energy loss quantitatively. In addition to the drag force that makes it lose energy, a quark moving through the o…

We compute the photon emission rate from a quark-gluon plasma with an anisotropic particle momentum distribution induced by a non-vanishing local shear pressure tensor. Our calculation includes photon production through Compton scattering and quark-antiquark annihilation at leading order in $α_s$, with all off-equilibrium corrections to leading order in the momentum anisotropy. For fermions we prove that the Kubo-Martin-Schwinger (KMS) relation holds in the hard loop regime for any particle momentum distribution function that is reflection-symmetric. This supports the equivalence, for 2 to 2 s…

The shear viscosity $η$ of a quark-gluon plasma in equilibrium can be calculated analytically using multiple methods or numerically using the Green-Kubo relation. It has been realized, which we confirm here, that the Chapman-Enskog method agrees well with the Green-Kubo result for both isotropic and anisotropic two-body scatterings. We then apply the Chapman-Enskog method to study the shear viscosity of the parton matter from a multi-phase transport model. In particular, we study the parton matter in the center cell of central and midcentral Au+Au collisions at $200A$ GeV and Pb+Pb collisions …
The momentum distribution of particle production in heavy-ion collisions encodes information about thermalization processes in the early-stage quark-gluon plasma. We use kinetic theory to study the far-from-equilibrium evolution of an expanding plasma with an anisotropic momentum-space distribution. We identify slow and fast degrees of freedom in the far-from-equilibrium plasma from the evolution of moments of this distribution. At late times, the slow modes correspond to hydrodynamic degrees of freedom and are naturally gapped from the fast modes by the inverse of the relaxation time, $τ_R^{-…
Strongly correlated systems far from equilibrium can exhibit scaling solutions with a dynamically generated weak coupling. We show this by investigating isolated systems described by relativistic quantum field theories for initial conditions leading to nonequilibrium instabilities, such as parametric resonance or spinodal decomposition. The non-thermal fixed points prevent fast thermalization if classical-statistical fluctuations dominate over quantum fluctuations. We comment on the possible significance of these results for the heating of the early universe after inflation and the question of…
The effective low-energy late-time description of many body systems near thermal equilibrium provided by classical hydrodynamics in terms of dissipative transport phenomena receives important corrections once the effects of stochastic fluctuations are taken into account. One such physical effect is the occurrence of long-time power law tails in correlation functions of conserved currents. In the hydrodynamic regime $\vec{k} \rightarrow 0$ this amounts to non-analytic dependence of the correlation functions on the frequency $ω$. In this article, we consider a relativistic fluid with a conserved…
Initial conditions for relativistic heavy-ion collisions may be far from equilibrium (i.e. there are large initial contributions from the shear stress tensor and bulk pressure) but it is expected that on very short time scales the dynamics converge to a universal attractor that defines hydrodynamic behavior. Thus far, studies of this nature have only considered an idealized situation at LHC energies (high temperatures $T$ and vanishing baryon chemical potential $μ_B=0$) but, in this work, we investigate for the first time how far-from-equilibrium effects may influence experimentally driven sea…
New constraints are found that must necessarily hold for Israel-Stewart-like theories of fluid dynamics to be causal far away from equilibrium. Conditions that are sufficient to ensure causality, local existence, and uniqueness of solutions in these theories are also presented. Our results hold in the full nonlinear regime, taking into account bulk and shear viscosities (at zero chemical potential), without any simplifying symmetry or near-equilibrium assumptions. Our findings provide fundamental constraints on the magnitude of viscous corrections in fluid dynamics far from equilibrium.
Detailed knowledge about equilibration processes is of interest for various fields of physics, including heavy ion collision experiments and quantum quenched condensed matter systems. We study the approach to equilibrium at late times within two types of strongly coupled thermal systems in 3+1 dimensions: systems in the presence of (i) a non-zero charge density, or (ii) a magnetic field at vanishing charge density. Utilizing the gauge/gravity correspondence, we map the aforementioned problem to the computation of quasinormal frequencies around two particular classes of black branes within the …
Fluid dynamics is traditionally thought to apply only to systems near local equilibrium. In this case, the effective theory of fluid dynamics can be constructed as a gradient series. Recent applications of resurgence suggest that this gradient series diverges, but can be Borel-resummed, giving rise to a hydrodynamic attractor solution which is well defined even for large gradients. Arbitrary initial data quickly approaches this attractor via non-hydrodynamic mode decay. This suggests the existence of a new theory of far-from-equilibrium fluid dynamics. In this work, the framework of fluid dyna…
