We have studied hydrogen-hydrogen-alkali three-body systems in the adiabatic hyperspherical representation. For the spin-stretched case, there exists a single $X$H molecular state when $X$ is one of the bosonic alkali atoms: $^7$Li, $^{23}$Na, $^{39}$K, $^{87}$Rb and $^{133}$Cs. As a result, the {\em only} recombination process is the one that leads to formation of $X$H molecules, H+H+$X$$\rightarrow$$X$H+H, and such molecules will be stable against vibrational relaxation. We have calculated the collision rates for recombination and collision induced dissociation as well as the elastic cross-sections for H+$X$H collisions up to a temperature of 0.5 K, including the partial wave contributions from $J^Π$=$0^+$ to $5^-$. We have also found that there is just one three-body bound state for such systems for $J^Π$=$0^+$ and no bound states for higher angular momenta.
In this theoretical work, we calculate potential energy curves, spectroscopic pa- rameters and transition dipole moments of molecular ions BeX^+ (X=Na, K, Rb) composed of alkaline ion Be and alkali atom X with a quantum chemistry approach based on the pseudopotential model, Gaussian basis sets, effective core polarization potentials, and full configuration interaction (CI). We study in detail collisions of the alkaline ion and alkali atom in quantum regime. Besides, we study the possibility of the formation of molecular ions from the ion-atom colliding systems by stimu- lated Raman adiabatic p…
Results. We consider the problem of isotropic collisions between an alkali atom and neutral hydrogen. We calculate the collisional tensorial components of general p and s-states, characterized by their effective principal quantum number $n^{*}$. It is found that the behaviour of the tensorial components obey simple power laws allowing quick calculations of the depolarizing collisional rates. As application, our results should allow a rigorous treatment of the atomic polarization profiles of the D1 -D2 lines of alkali atoms. Conclusions. Close coupling treatments of atomic collisions are needed…
We demonstrate a novel way to form and deplete a vapor-cell magneto-optic trap (MOT) using a reversible, solid-state alkali-metal source (AMS) via an applied polarized voltage. Using ~100 mW of electrical power, a trapped-atom number of 5x10^6 has been achieved starting from near zero and the timescales of the MOT formation and depletion of ~1 s. This fast, reversible, and low power alkali-atom source is desirable in both tabletop and portable cold-atom systems. The core technology of this device should translate readily to other alkali and alkaline-earth elements that could find a wide range …
The potential energy curves, permanent and transition dipole moments, and the static dipolar polarizability, of molecular ions composed of one alkali-metal atom and a Strontium ion are determined with a quantum chemistry approach. The molecular ions are treated as effective two-electron systems and are treated using effective core potentials including core polarization, large gaussian basis sets, and full configuration interaction. In the perspective of upcoming experiments aiming at merging cold atom and cold ion traps, possible paths for radiative charge exchange, photoassociation of a cold …
The reaction of alkali (Na, Cs) clusters with water clusters embedded in helium nanodroplets is studied using femtosecond photo-ionization as well as electron impact ionization. Unlike Na clusters, Cs clusters are found to completely react with water in spite of the ultracold helium droplet environment. Mass spectra of the Cs$_n$+(H$_2$O)$_m$ reaction products are interpreted in terms of stability with respect to fragmentation using high-level molecular structure calculations.
We calculate the light-induced collisional loss of laser-cooled and trapped magnesium atoms for detunings up to 50 atomic linewidths to the red of the ^1S_0-^1P_1 cooling transition. We evaluate loss rate coefficients due to both radiative and nonradiative state-changing mechanisms for temperatures at and below the Doppler cooling temperature. We solve the Schrodinger equation with a complex potential to represent spontaneous decay, but also give analytic models for various limits. Vibrational structure due to molecular photoassociation is present in the trap loss spectrum. Relatively broad st…
The van der Waals coefficients for the alkali-metal atoms from Na to Fr interacting in their ground states, are calculated using relativistic ab initio methods. The accuracy of the calculations is estimated by also evaluating atomic static electric dipole polarizabilities and coefficients for the interaction of the atoms with a perfectly conducting wall. The results are in excellent agreement with the latest data from ultra-cold collisions and from studies of magnetic field induced Feshbach resonances in Na and Rb. For Cs we provide critically needed data for ultra-cold collision studies.
A glass ultrahigh vacuum chamber with rubidium alkali metal dispensers and non-evaporable getter pumps has been developed and used to create a cold atomic sample in a chamber that operates with only passive vacuum pumps. The ion-mass spectrum of evaporated gases from the alkali metal dispenser has been recorded as a function of dispenser current. The efficacy of the non-evaporable getter pumps in promoting and maintaining vacuum has been characterized by observation of the Rb vapor optical absorption on the D2 transition at 780 nm and vacuum chamber pressure rate of rise tests. We have demonst…
The retarded long-range potentials for hydrogen and alkali-metal atoms in their ground states and a perfectly conducting wall are calculated. The potentials are given over a wide range of atom-wall distances and the validity of the approximations used is established.
Ultra-cold alkali atoms trapped in two distinct hyperfine states in an external magnetic field can mimic magnetic systems of spin 1/2 particles. We describe the spin-dependent effective interaction as a spin-spin interaction. As a consequence of the zero-range, the interaction of spin 1/2 bosons can be described as an Ising or, alternatively, as an XY-coupling. We calculated the spin-spin interaction parameters as a function of the external magnetic field in the Degenerate Internal State (DIS) approximation. We illustrate the advantage of the spin-spin interaction form by mapping the system of…
We describe and characterize a device for alkali vapor pressure modulation on the 100ms timescale in a single-cell cold atom experiment. Its mechanism is based on optimized heat conduction between a current-modulated alkali dispenser and a heat sink at room temperature. We have studied both the short-term behavior during individual pulses and the long-term pressure evolution in the cell. The device combines fast trap loading and relatively long trap lifetime, enabling high repetition rates in a very simple setup. These features make it particularly suitable for portable atomic sensors.

The profiles obtained with that approach, have peculiar trends, narrower than hydrogen, all quantum defects used are taken from atomic database topbase. Illustration of stronger effects of ions and electrons on the alkaline profiles, than neutral-neutral collision mechanism. We consider collisional studies of linear polyatomic ions immersed in ultracold atomic gases and investigate the intermolecular interactions and chemical reactions of several molecular anions ($\mathrm{OH}^-$, $\mathrm{CN}^-$, $\mathrm{NCO}^-$, $\mathrm{C}_2\mathrm{H}^-$, $\mathrm{C}_4\mathrm{H}^-$) with alkali-metal (Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs) and alkaline-earth-metal (Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba) atoms. State-of-the-art ab initio techniques are applied to compute the potential energy surfaces (PESs) for these systems. The coupled cluster method restricted to single, double, and noniterative triple excitations, C…
Apropos to the growing interest in the study of long-range interactions which for their applications in cold atom physics, we have performed theoretical calculation for the two-dipole $C_6$ and three-dipole $C_9$ dispersion coefficients involving alkaline-earth atoms with alkaline-earth atoms and alkaline-earth ions. The $C_6$ and $C_9$ coefficients are expressed in terms of the dynamic dipole polarizabilities, which are calculated using relativistic methods. Thereafter, the calculated $C_6$ coefficients for the considered alkaline-earth atoms among themselves are compared with the previously …
We have developed an improved scheme for loading atoms into a magneto-optical trap (MOT) from a directed alkali metal dispenser in < 10^-10 torr ultra-high vacuum conditions. A current-driven dispenser was surrounded with a cold absorbing "shroud" held at < 0 C, pumping rubidium atoms not directed into the MOT. This nearly eliminates background alkali atoms and reduces the detrimental rise in pressure normally associated with these devices. The system can be well-described as a current-controlled, rapidly-switched, two-temperature thermal beam, and was used to load a MOT with 3 x 10^8 atoms.
We study theoretically interaction potentials and low energy collisions between different alkali atoms and alkali ions. Specifically, we consider systems like X + Y$^{+}$, where X(Y$^{+})$ is either Li(Cs$^+$) or Cs(Li$^+$), Na(Cs$^+$) or Cs(Na$^+$) and Li(Rb$^+$) or Rb(Li$^+$). We calculate the molecular potentials of the ground and first two excited states of these three systems using pseudopotential method and compare our results with those obtained by others. We derive ground-state scattering wave functions and analyze cold collisional properties of these systems for a wide range of energi…
We study the proton-hydrogen collision in the energy range from 0 to 5 K where the hyperfine structure of the hydrogen atom is important. The proper multichannel treatment of the hyperfine structure is found to be crucial at cold temperatures compared to the elastic approximation used for higher temperatures. Both elastic and hyperfine-changing inelastic processes are investigated using the newly developed multichannel quantum-defect theory (MQDT) as well as the traditional coupled-channel numerical method. Cross section results from the two methods coincide well throughout the energy range. T…
Single-electron ionization and excitation cross sections as well as cross sections for excitation into the first excited p state of the alkali metal atoms Li(2s), Na(3s) and K(4s) colliding with antiprotons and protons were calculated using a time-dependent channel-coupling approach. For antiprotons an impact-energy range from 0.25 to 1000 keV and for protons from 2 to 1000 keV was considered. The target atoms are treated as effective one-electron systems using a model potential. The results are compared with theoretical and experimental data from literature and calculated cross sections for a…
Laser spectroscopy studies are being prepared to measure the 1s ground state hyperfine splitting in trapped cold highly charged ions. The purpose of such experiments is to test quantum electrodynamics in the strong electric field regime. These experiments form part of the HITRAP project at GSI. A brief review of the planned experiments is presented.
We theoretically characterize interactions, energetics, and chemical reaction paths in ionic two-body and three-body systems of alkali-metal and alkaline-earth-metal atoms in the context of modern experiments with cold hybrid ion-atom mixtures. Using \textit{ab initio} techniques of quantum chemistry such as the coupled-cluster method, we calculate ground-state electronic properties of all diatomic $AB^+$ and most of triatomic $A_2B^+$ molecular ions consisting of Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, and Yb atoms. Different geometries and wave-function symmetries of the ground state are found fo…
We have observed the cold collision frequency shift of the 1S-2S transition in trapped spin-polarized atomic hydrogen. We find $Δν_{1S-2S} = -3.8(8)\times 10^{-10} n Hz cm^3$, where $n$ is the sample density. From this we derive the 1S-2S s-wave triplet scattering length, $a_{1S-2S}=-1.4(3)$ nm, which is in fair agreement with a recent calculation. The shift provides a valuable probe of the distribution of densities in a trapped sample.
Studies on the interactions between an alkali atom and an alkaline earth ion at low energy are important in the field of cold chemistry. In this paper we, extensively, study the structure, interactions, and dynamics of (MgCs)$^+$ molecular ion. We use an ab initio approach based on the formalism of non-empirical pseudo-potential for Mg$^{2+}$ and Cs$^+$ cores, large Gaussian basis sets and full valence configuration interaction. In this context, the (MgCs)$^+$ cation is treated as an effective two-electron system. Potential energy curves and their spectroscopic constants for the ground and the…
The long-range non-additive three-body dispersion interaction coefficients $Z_{111}$, $Z_{112}$, $Z_{113}$, and $Z_{122}$ are computed for many atomic combinations using standard expressions. The atoms considered include hydrogen, the rare gases, the alkali atoms (up to Rb) and the alkaline-earth atoms (up to Sr). The term $Z_{111}$, arising from three mutual dipole interactions is known as the Axilrod-Teller-Muto coefficient or the DDD (dipole-dipole-dipole) coefficient. Similarly, the terms $Z_{112}$, $Z_{113}$, and $Z_{122}$ arise from the mutual combinations of dipole (1), quadrupole (2), …
Experiments with cold ion-atom mixtures have recently opened the way for the production and application of ultracold molecular ions. Here, in a comparative study, we theoretically investigate ground and several excited electronic states and prospects for the formation of molecular ions composed of a calcium ion and an alkali-metal atom: CaAlk$^{+}$ (Alk=Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs). We use a quantum chemistry approach based on non-empirical pseudopotential, operatorial core-valence correlation, large Gaussian basis sets, and full configuration interaction method for valence electrons. Adiabatic potentia…
We use accurate ab initio and quantum scattering calculations to explore the prospects for sympathetic cooling of the heavy molecular radical SrOH($^2Σ$) by ultracold Li atoms in a magnetic trap. A two-dimensional potential energy surface (PES) for the triplet electronic state of Li-SrOH is calculated ab initio using the partially spin-restricted coupled cluster method with single, double and perturbative triple excitations and a large correlation-consistent basis set. The highly anisotropic PES has a deep global minimum in the skewed Li-HOSr geometry with $D_e=4932$ cm$^{-1}$ and saddle point…
We consider light trapping in an amplifying medium consisting of cold alkali-metal atoms; the atomic gas plays a dual role as a scattering and as a gain medium. We perform Monte-Carlo simulations for the combined processes. In some configurations of the inhomogeneous distribution this leads to a point of instability behavior and a signature of random lasing in a cold atomic gas.
In this work we report the results concerning calculations for quantum-mechanical rotational transitions in molecular hydrogen, H$_2$, induced by an ultra-cold ground state anti-hydrogen atom $\bar{H}_{1s}$. The calculations are accomplished using a non-reactive close-coupling quantum-mechanical approach. The H$_2$ molecule is treated as a rigid rotor. The total elastic scattering cross section $σ_{el}(ε)$ at energy $ε$, state-resolved rotational transition cross sections $σ_{jj'}(ε)$ between states $j$ and $j'$ and corresponding thermal rate coefficients $k_{jj'}(T)$ are computed in the tempe…
We present a detailed study about ion-atom-atom three-body recombination in hydrogen and deuterium plasmas based on classical trajectory calculations in hyperspherical coordinates. Our results, due to the predominant role of the long-range charged-induced dipole interaction, indicate that H$_2^+$ and D$_2^+$ are the main reaction products in the case of hydrogen and deuterium plasmas, respectively. Besides, we find a more steep energy-dependent reaction rate when the collision energy surpasses the dissociation energy of the molecular ion, thus entering a new dynamical regime dominated by short…
We study ultracold collisions in fermionic ytterbium by precisely measuring the energy shifts they impart on the atom's internal clock states. Exploiting Fermi statistics, we uncover p-wave collisions, in both weakly and strongly interacting regimes. With the higher density afforded by two-dimensional lattice confinement, we demonstrate that strong interactions can lead to a novel suppression of this collision shift. In addition to reducing the systematic errors of lattice clocks, this work has application to quantum information and quantum simulation with alkaline-earth atoms.
In recent years, light-induced atomic desorption (LIAD) of alkali atoms from the inner surface of a vacuum chamber has been employed in cold atom experiments for the purpose of modulating the alkali background vapour. This is beneficial because larger trapped atom samples can be loaded from vapour at higher pressure, after which the pressure is reduced to increase the lifetime of the sample. We present an analysis, based on the case of rubidium atoms adsorbed on pyrex, of various aspects of LIAD that are useful for this application. Firstly, we study the intensity dependence of LIAD by fitting…
