Femtocell is emerging as a key technology to secure the coverage and capacity in indoor environments. However the deployment of a new femtocell layer may originate undesired interference to the whole system. This paper investigates spectrum resource coordination and interference management for the femtocell networks. A resource coordination scheme based on broadcasting resource coordination request messages by the femto mobile is proposed to reduce the system interference.
Resource coordination and interference management is the key to achieving the benefits of femtocell networks. Over-the-air signaling is one of the most effective means for distributed dynamic resource coordination and interference management. However, the design of this type of signal is challenging. In this letter, we address the challenges and propose an effective solution, referred to as coded single-tone signaling (STS). The proposed coded STS scheme possesses certain highly desirable properties, such as no dedicated resource requirement (no overhead), no near-and-far effect, no inter-sign…

Femtocell networks are promising for not only improving the coverage but also increasing the capacity of current cellular networks. The interference-limited reality in femtocell networks makes interference management (IM) the key to maintaining the quality of service and fairness in femtocell networks. Managing interference in a network of macrocells underlaid with femtocells presents an important, yet challenging problem. A majority of spatial (frequency/time) reuse based approaches partition the users based on coloring the interference graph, which is shown to be suboptimal. Some spatial time reuse based approaches schedule the maximal independent sets (MISs) in a cyclic, (weighted) round-robin fashion, which is inefficient for delay-sensitive applications. Our proposed policies schedule the MISs in a non-cyclic fashion, which aim to optimize any given network performance criterion for del…
Heterogeneous networks are a flexible deployment model that rely on low power nodes to improve the user broadband experience in a cost effective manner. Femtocells are an integral part of heterogeneous networks, whose main purpose is to improve the indoor capacity. When restricting access to home users, femtocells cause a substantial interference problem that cannot be mitigated through coordination with the macrocell base station. In this paper, we analyze multiple antenna communication on the downlink of a macrocell network, with femtocell overlay. We evaluate the feasibility of limited feed…
In this paper, we develop novel two-tier interference management strategies that enable macrocell users (MUEs) to improve their performance, with the help of open-access femtocells. To this end, we propose a rate-splitting technique using which the MUEs optimize their uplink transmissions by dividing their signals into two types: a coarse message that is intended for direct transmission to the macrocell base station and a fine message that is decoded by a neighboring femtocell and subsequently relayed over a heterogeneous (wireless/wired) backhaul. For deploying the proposed technique, we form…
One of the main problems in wireless heterogeneous networks is interference between macro- and femto-cells. Using Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) to create multiple frequency orthogonal sub-channels, this interference can be completely avoided if each sub-channel is exclusively used by either macro- or a femto-cell. However, such an orthogonal allocation may be inefficient. We consider two alternative strategies for interference management, opportunistic resource allocation (ORA) and interference alignment (IA). Both of them utilize the fading fluctuations across frequenc…
This paper presents a hierarchical approach to resource allocation in open-access femtocell networks. The major challenge in femtocell networks is interference management which in our system, based on the Long Term Evolution (LTE) standard, translates to which user should be allocated which physical resource block (or fraction thereof) from which femtocell access point (FAP). The globally optimal solution requires integer programming and is mathematically intractable. We propose a hierarchical three-stage solution: first, the load of each FAP is estimated considering the number of users connec…
We consider a general class of wireless scheduling and resource allocation problems where the received rate in each link is determined by the actions of the transmitter in that link along with a single dominant interferer. Such scenarios arise in a range of scenarios, particularly in emerging femto- and picocellular networks with strong, localized interference. For these networks, a utility maximizing scheduler based on loopy belief propagation is presented that enables computationally-efficient local processing and low communication overhead. Our main theoretical result shows that the fixed p…
In this paper, we consider a heterogenous network (HetNet), where low-power indoor femtocells are deployed in the coverage area of the existing macro base station (MBS). This paper proposes a novel coordinated random beamforming and user scheduling strategy to improve the throughput of users served by the femtocell access point (FAP) while satisfying the quality-of-service (QoS) requirements of users served by both MBS and FAP. The strategy, termed as QoS-Aware Coodinated Scheduling (QACS), requires limited coordination between the MBS and FAP, i.e., only the indexes of the qualified beams are…
Heterogeneous networks (het-nets) - comprising of conventional macrocell base stations overlaid with femtocells, picocells and wireless relays - offer cellular operators burgeoning traffic demands through cell-splitting gains obtained by bringing users closer to their access points. However, the often random and unplanned location of these access points can cause severe near-far problems, typically solved by coordinating base-station transmissions to minimize interference. Towards this direction, the 3rd generation partnership project Long Term Evolution-Advanced (3GPP-LTE or Rel-10) standard …
In two-tier networks -- comprising a conventional cellular network overlaid with shorter range hotspots (e.g. femtocells, distributed antennas, or wired relays) -- with universal frequency reuse, the near-far effect from cross-tier interference creates dead spots where reliable coverage cannot be guaranteed to users in either tier. Equipping the macrocell and femtocells with multiple antennas enhances robustness against the near-far problem. This work derives the maximum number of simultaneously transmitting multiple antenna femtocells meeting a per-tier outage probability constraint. Coverage…
3GPP LTE-Advanced has started a new study item to investigate Heterogeneous Network (HetNet) deployments as a cost effective way to deal with the unrelenting traffic demand. HetNets consist of a mix of macrocells, remote radio heads, and low-power nodes such as picocells, femtocells, and relays. Leveraging network topology, increasing the proximity between the access network and the end-users, has the potential to provide the next significant performance leap in wireless networks, improving spatial spectrum reuse and enhancing indoor coverage. Nevertheless, deployment of a large number of smal…
Future multi-tier communication networks will require enhanced network capacity and reduced overhead. In the absence of Channel State Information (CSI) at the transmitters, Blind Interference Alignment (BIA) and Topological Interference Management (TIM) can achieve optimal Degrees of Freedom (DoF), minimising network's overhead. In addition, Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) can increase the sum rate of the network, compared to orthogonal radio access techniques currently adopted by 4G networks. Our contribution is two interference management schemes, BIA and a hybrid TIM-NOMA scheme, empl…
The heterogeneity in cellular networks that comprise multiple base stations types imposes new challenges in network planning and deployment of future generation of cellular networks. The Radio Resource Management (RRM) techniques, such as dynamic sharing of the available resources and advanced user association strategies, determine the overall network capacity and efficiency. This paper evaluates the downlink performance of a two tier heterogeneous network (consisting of macro and femto tiers) in terms of rate distribution, i.e. the percentage of users that achieve certain rate in the system. …
Heterogeneous base stations (e.g. picocells, microcells, femtocells and distributed antennas) will become increasingly essential for cellular network capacity and coverage. Up until now, little basic research has been done on the fundamentals of managing so much infrastructure -- much of it unplanned -- together with the carefully planned macro-cellular network. Inter-cell coordination is in principle an effective way of ensuring different infrastructure components behave in a way that increases, rather than decreases, the key quality of service (QoS) metrics. The success of such coordination …
The densification and expansion of wireless network pose new challenges on interference management and reducing energy consumption. This paper studies energy-efficient resource management in heterogeneous networks by jointly optimizing cell activation, user association and multicell multiuser channel assignment, according to the long-term average traffic and channel conditions. The proposed framework is built on characterizing the interference coupling by pre-defined interference patterns, and performing resource allocation among these patterns. In this way, the interference fluctuation caused…
Device-to-device (D2D) underlaid cellular network, enabled with radio frequency energy harvesting (RFEH), and enhanced interference management schemes is a promising candidate to improve spectral and energy efficiency of next generation wireless networks. In this paper, we propose a time division duplexing (TDD)-based protocol, in which allows the devices to harvest energy from the downlink transmissions of the base station, while controlling the interference among D2D and cellular communication in the uplink. We propose two schemes for transmission coordination, based on fixed transmission pr…
This paper considers the remote state estimation in a cyber-physical system (CPS) using multiple sensors. The measurements of each sensor are transmitted to a remote estimator over a shared channel, where simultaneous transmissions from other sensors are regarded as interference signals. In such a competitive environment, each sensor needs to choose its transmission power for sending data packets taking into account of other sensors' behavior. To model this interactive decision-making process among the sensors, we introduce a multi-player non-cooperative game framework. To overcome the ineffic…
In this paper we use game theoretic techniques to study the value of cooperation in distributed spectrum management problems. We show that the celebrated iterative water-filling algorithm is subject to the prisoner's dilemma and therefore can lead to severe degradation of the achievable rate region in an interference channel environment. We also provide thorough analysis of a simple two bands near-far situation where we are able to provide closed form tight bounds on the rate region of both fixed margin iterative water filling (FM-IWF) and dynamic frequency division multiplexing (DFDM) methods…
Highly directional millimeter wave (mmWave) radios need to perform beam management to establish and maintain reliable links. To do so, existing solutions mostly rely on explicit coordination between the transmitter (TX) and the receiver (RX), which significantly reduces the airtime available for communication and further complicates the network protocol design. This paper advances the state of the art by presenting DeepBeam, a framework for beam management that does not require pilot sequences from the TX, nor any beam sweeping or synchronization from the RX. This is achieved by inferring (i) …
We consider the problem of cache-aided interference management in a network consisting of $K_{\mathrm{T}}$ single-antenna transmitters and $K_{\mathrm{R}}$ single-antenna receivers, where each node is equipped with a cache memory. Transmitters communicate with receivers over two heterogenous parallel subchannels: the P-subchannel for which transmitters have perfect instantaneous knowledge of the channel state, and the N-subchannel for which the transmitters have no knowledge of the instantaneous channel state. Under the assumptions of uncoded placement and separable one-shot linear delivery ov…
Providing consistently high wireless capacity is becoming increasingly important to support the applications required by future digital enterprises. In this paper, we propose Eigen-direction-aware ZF (EDA-ZF) with partial coordination among base stations (BSs) and distributed interference suppression as a practical approach to achieve this objective. We compare our solution with Zero Forcing (ZF), entailing neither BS coordination or inter-cell interference mitigation, and Network MIMO (NeMIMO), where full BS coordination enables centralized inter-cell interference management. We also evaluate…

This paper presents a machine learning strategy that tackles a distributed optimization task in a wireless network with an arbitrary number of randomly interconnected nodes. Individual nodes decide their optimal states with distributed coordination among other nodes through randomly varying backhaul links. This poses a technical challenge in distributed universal optimization policy robust to a random topology of the wireless network, which has not been properly addressed by conventional deep neural networks (DNNs) with rigid structural configurations. We develop a flexible DNN formalism terme…
This paper investigates the co-existence of Wi-Fi and LTE in emerging unlicensed frequency bands which are intended to accommodate multiple radio access technologies. Wi-Fi and LTE are the two most prominent access technologies being deployed today, motivating further study of the inter-system interference arising in such shared spectrum scenarios as well as possible techniques for enabling improved co-existence. An analytical model for evaluating the baseline performance of co-existing Wi-Fi and LTE is developed and used to obtain baseline performance measures. The results show that both Wi-F…
Ultra network densification is considered a major trend in the evolution of cellular networks, due to its ability to bring the network closer to the user side and reuse resources to the maximum extent. In this paper we explore spatial resources coordination as a key empowering technology for next generation (5G) ultra-dense networks. We propose an optimization framework for flexibly associating system users with a densely deployed network of access nodes, opting for the exploitation of densification and the control of overhead signaling. Combined with spatial precoding processing strategies, w…
