According to recent results of Ho & Heinke (2009) and Heinke & Ho (2010), the Cassiopeia A supernova remnant contains a young neutron star which has carbon atmosphere and shows noticeable decline of the effective surface temperature. We report a new (November 2010) Chandra observation which confirms the previously reported decline rate. The decline is naturally explained if neutrons have recently become superfluid (in triplet-state) in the NS core, producing a splash of neutrino emission due to Cooper pair formation (CPF) process that currently accelerates the cooling. This scenario puts stringent constraints on poorly known properties of NS cores: on density dependence of the temperature $T_\mathrm{cn}(ρ)$ for the onset of neutron superfluidity [$T_\mathrm{cn}(ρ)$ should have a wide peak with maximum $\approx (7-9)\times 10^8$ K], on the reduction factor $q$ of CPF process by collective effects in superfluid matter ($q > 0.4$), and on the intensity of neutrino emission before the onset of neutron superfluidity (30--100 times weaker than the standard modified Urca process). This is serious evidence for nucleon superfluidity in NS cores that comes from observations of cooling NSs.
Observations of the ejecta of core-collapse supernovae have shown that dust grains form in over-dense gas clumps in the expanding ejecta. The clumps are later subject to the passage of the reverse shock and a significant amount of the newly formed dust material can be destroyed due to the high temperatures and high velocities in the post-shock gas. To determine dust survival rates, we have performed a set of hydrodynamic simulations using the grid-based code AstroBEAR in order to model a shock wave interacting with a clump of gas and dust. Afterwards, dust motions and dust destruction rates ar…
Core-collapse supernovae can condense large masses of dust post-explosion. However, sputtering and grain-grain collisions during the subsequent passage of the dust through the reverse shock can potentially destroy a significant fraction of the newly formed dust before it can reach the interstellar medium. Here we show that in oxygen-rich supernova remnants like Cassiopeia A the penetration and trapping within silicate grains of the same impinging ions of oxygen, silicon and magnesium that are responsible for grain surface sputtering can significantly reduce the net loss of grain material. We m…
We report on the result of He abundance analysis of dense circumstellar clumps in the young supernova remnant Cassiopeia A. These clumps, which are called quasi-stationary flocculi (QSFs), are known from previous optical studies to be enriched in He along with N, but the degree of He overabundance relative to H has remained uncertain. For several QSFs with near-infrared spectroscopic data, we have analyzed their He I 1.083 $μ$m/Pa$γ$ ratios together with the ratios of [Fe II] lines by using the Raymond shock code. According to our analysis, He is overabundant relative to H by a factor of $\les…
We have conducted a large-field simultaneous survey of $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, and C$^{18}$O $J=1-0$ emission toward the Cassiopeia A (Cas A) supernova remnant (SNR), which covers a sky area of $3.5^{\circ}\times3.1^{\circ}$. The Cas giant molecular cloud (GMC) mainly consists of three individual clouds with masses on the order of $10^4-10^5\ M_{\odot}$. The total mass derived from the $\rm{^{13}CO}$ emission of the GMC is 2.1$\times10^{5}\ M_{\odot}$ and is 9.5$\times10^5\ M_{\odot}$ from the $\rm{^{12}CO}$ emission. Two regions with broadened (6$-$7 km s$^{-1}$) or asymmetric $^{12}$CO line pr…
The cooling of the Cassiopeia A neutron star as a probe of a triplet neutron pairing in the core
Cassiopeia A (Cas A) is one of the best studied young Galactic supernova remnants. While providing a rare opportunity to study in detail the remnant of a Type IIb supernova, questions remain regarding the nature of its progenitor, its mass-loss history, and its pre-SN evolution. Here we present an optical investigation of the circumstellar environment around Cas A and find clumpy and filamentary Halpha emission nebulosities concentrated 10-15 pc (10-15 arcminutes) to the north and east. First reported by Minkowski as a faint H II region, these nebulosities exhibit distinct morphological and sp…
Cassiopeia A is a nearby young supernova remnant that provides a unique laboratory for the study of core-collapse supernova explosions. Cassiopeia A is known to be a Type IIb supernova from the optical spectrum of its light echo, but the immediate progenitor of the supernova remains uncertain. Here we report results of near-infrared, high-resolution spectroscopic observations of Cassiopeia A where we detected the pristine circumstellar material of the supernova progenitor. Our observations revealed a strong emission line of iron (Fe) from a circumstellar clump that has not yet been processed b…
We explore a new scenario for producing stripped-envelope supernova progenitors. In our scenario, the stripped-envelope supernova is the second supernova of the binary, in which the envelope of the secondary was removed during its red supergiant phase by the impact of the first supernova. Through 2D hydrodynamical simulations, we find that $\sim$50-90$\%$ of the envelope can be unbound as long as the pre-supernova orbital separation is $\lesssim5$ times the stellar radius. Recombination energy plays a significant role in the unbinding, especially for relatively high mass systems ($\gtrsim18M_\…
The study of how neutron stars cool over time can provide invaluable insights into fundamental physics such as the nuclear equation of state and superconductivity and superfluidity. A critical relation in neutron star cooling is the one between observed surface temperature and interior temperature. This relation is determined by the composition of the neutron star envelope and can be influenced by the process of diffusive nuclear burning (DNB). We calculate models of envelopes that include DNB and find that DNB can lead to a rapidly changing envelope composition which can be relevant for under…
