We perform the a posteriori error analysis of residual type of a transmission problem with sign changing coefficients. According to [6] if the contrast is large enough, the continuous problem can be transformed into a coercive one. We further show that a similar property holds for the discrete problem for any regular meshes, extending the framework from [6]. The reliability and efficiency of the proposed estimator is confirmed by some numerical tests.
The spectral deferred correction method is a variant of the deferred correction method for solving ordinary differential equations. A benefit of this method is that is uses low order schemes iteratively to produce a high order approximation. In this paper we consider adjoint-based a posteriori analysis to estimate the error in a quantity of interest of the solution. This error formula is derived by first developing a nodally equivalent finite element method to the spectral deferred correction method. The error formula is then split into various terms, each of which characterizes a different co…
We consider locally stabilized, conforming finite element schemes on completely unstructured simplicial space-time meshes for the numerical solution of parabolic initial-boundary value problems with variable, possibly discontinuous in space and time, coefficients. Distributional sources are also admitted. Discontinuous coefficients, non-smooth boundaries, changing boundary conditions, non-smooth or incompatible initial conditions, and non-smooth right-hand sides can lead to non-smooth solutions. We present new a priori and a posteriori error estimates for low-regularity solutions. In order to …
This paper proposes a method for rigorously analyzing the sign-change structure of solutions of elliptic partial differential equations subject to one of the three types of homogeneous boundary conditions: Dirichlet, Neumann, and mixed. Given explicitly estimated error bounds between an exact solution $ u $ and a numerically computed approximate solution $ \hat{u} $, we evaluate the number of sign-changes of $ u $ (the number of nodal domains) and determine the location of zero level-sets of $ u $ (the location of the nodal line). We apply this method to the Dirichlet problem of the Allen-Cahn…

We construct a space-time parallel method for solving parabolic partial differential equations by coupling the Parareal algorithm in time with overlapping domain decomposition in space. The goal is to obtain a discretization consisting of "local" problems that can be solved on parallel computers efficiently. However, this introduces significant sources of error that must be evaluated. Reformulating the original Parareal algorithm as a variational method and implementing a finite element discretization in space enables an adjoint-based a posteriori error analysis to be performed. Through an app…
The aim in model order reduction is to approximate an input-output map described by a large-scale dynamical system with a low-dimensional and cheaper-to-evaluate reduced order model. While high fidelity can be achieved by a variety of methods, only a few of them allow for rigorous error control. In this paper, we propose a rigorous error bound for the reduction of linear systems with balancing-related reduction methods. More specifically, we consider the simulation over a finite time interval and provide an a posteriori adaption of the standard a priori bound for Balanced Truncation and Balanc…
Reduced order models (ROM) are commonly employed to solve parametric problems and to devise inexpensive response surfaces to evaluate quantities of interest in real-time. There are many families of ROMs in the literature and choosing among them is not always a trivial task. This work presents a comparison of the performance of a priori and a posteriori proper generalised decomposition (PGD) algorithms for an incompressible Stokes flow problem in a geometrically parametrised domain. This problem is particularly challenging as the geometric parameters affect both the solution manifold and the co…
In this paper, we present a hybridized discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method for Poisson-type problems with sign-changing coefficients. We introduce a sign-changing stabilization parameter that results in a stable HDG method independent of domain geometry and the ratio of the negative and positive coefficients. Since the Poisson-type problem with sign-changing coefficients is not elliptic, standard techniques with a duality argument to analyze the HDG method cannot be applied. Hence, we present a novel error analysis exploiting the stabilized saddle-point problem structure of the HDG method. Num…
Problems with sign-changing coefficients occur, for instance, in the study of transmission problems with metamaterials. In this work, we present and analyze a generalized finite element method in the spirit of the Localized Orthogonal Decomposition, that is especially efficient when the negative and positive materials exhibit multiscale features. We derive optimal linear convergence in the energy norm independently of the potentially low regularity of the exact solution. Numerical experiments illustrate the theoretical convergence rates and show the applicability of the method for a large clas…
