In this paper, by a new method we establish the Weyl-type asymptotic formula for the counting function of biharmonic Stekloff eigenvalues with Neumann boundary condition in a bounded domain of an $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold.
Let $Ω$ be a bounded domain with $C^2$-smooth boundary in an $n$-dimensional oriented Riemannian manifold. It is well-known that for the bi-harmonic equation $Δ^2 u=0$ in $Ω$ with the $0$-Dirichlet boundary condition, there exists an infinite set $\{u_k\}$ of biharmonic functions in $Ω$ with positive eigenvalues $\{λ_k\}$ satisfying $Δu_k+ λ_k \varrho \frac{\partial u_k}{\partial ν}=0$ on the boundary $\partial Ω$. In this paper, by a new method we establish the Weyl-type asymptotic formula for the counting function of the biharmonic Stekloff eigenvalues $λ_k$.
Let $Ω$ be a bounded domain in $\mathbb R^2$ with smooth boundary $\partialΩ$, and let $ω_h$ be the set of points in $Ω$ whose distance from the boundary is smaller than $h$. We prove that the eigenvalues of the biharmonic operator on $ω_h$ with Neumann boundary conditions converge to the eigenvalues of a limiting problem in the form of system of differential equations on $\partialΩ$.
We consider the biharmonic operator subject to homogeneous boundary conditions of Neumann type on a planar dumbbell domain which consists of two disjoint domains connected by a thin channel. We analyse the spectral behaviour of the operator, characterizing the limit of the eigenvalues and of the eigenprojections as the thickness of the channel goes to zero. In applications to linear elasticity, the fourth order operator under consideration is related to the deformation of a free elastic plate, a part of which shrinks to a segment. In contrast to what happens with the classical second order cas…
We introduce the biharmonic Steklov problem on differential forms by considering suitable boundary conditions. We characterize its smallest eigenvalue and prove elementary properties of the spectrum. We obtain various estimates for the first eigenvalue, some of which involve eigenvalues of other problems such as the Dirichlet, Neumann, Robin and Steklov ones. Independently, new inequalities relating the eigenvalues of the latter problems are proved.
Polar differentiation matrices for the Laplace equation in the disk subjected to nonhomogeneous Dirichlet, Neumann and Robin boundary conditions and the biharmonic equation subjected to nonhomogeneous Dirichlet conditions
In this article, stability estimates are given for the determination of the zeroth-order bounded perturbations of the biharmonic operator when the boundary Neumann measurements are made on the whole boundary and on slightly more than half the boundary, respectively. For the case of measurements on the whole boundary, the stability estimates are of ln-type and for the case of measurements on slightly more than half of the boundary, we derive estimates that are of ln ln-type.
This paper deals with the initial-boundary value problem of the biharmonic cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation in a quarter plane with inhomogeneous Dirichlet-Neumann boundary data. We prove local well-posedness in the low regularity Sobolev spaces introducing Duhamel boundary forcing operator associated to the linear equation to construct solutions on the whole line. With this in hands, the energy and nonlinear estimates allow us to apply Fourier restriction method, introduced by J. Bourgain, to get the main result of the article. Additionally, adaptations of this approach for the biharmonic…
This paper deals with the stabilization of the linear Biharmonic Schrödinger equation in an $n$-dimensional open bounded domain under Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions considering three infinite memory terms as damping mechanisms. We show that depending on the smoothness of initial data and the arbitrary growth at infinity of the kernel function, this class of solution goes to zero with a polynomial decay rate like $t^{-n}$ depending on assumptions about the kernel function associated with the infinite memory terms.
We consider an operator $Δ^2 + A(x)\cdot D+q(x)$ with the Navier boundary conditions on a bounded domain in $R^n$, $n\ge 3$. We show that a first order perturbation $A(x)\cdot D+q$ can be determined uniquely by measuring the Dirichlet--to--Neumann map on possibly very small subsets of the boundary of the domain. Notice that the corresponding result does not hold in general for a first order perturbation of the Laplacian.
We prove that a continuous potential $q$ can be constructively determined from the knowledge of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map for the perturbed biharmonic operator $Δ_g^2+q$ on a conformally transversally anisotropic Riemannian manifold of dimension $\ge 3$ with boundary, assuming that the geodesic ray transform on the transversal manifold is constructively invertible. This is a constructive counterpart of the uniqueness result of [51]. In particular, our result is applicable and new in the case of smooth bounded domains in the $3$-dimensional Euclidean space as well as in the case of $3$-dimen…
We study the local and global wellposedness of the initial-boundary value problem for the biharmonic Schrödinger equation on the half-line with inhomogeneous Dirichlet-Neumann boundary data. First, we obtain a representation formula for the solution of the linear nonhomogenenous problem by using the Fokas method (also known as the \emph{unified transform method}). We use this representation formula to prove space and time estimates on the solutions of the linear model in fractional Sobolev spaces by using Fourier analysis. Secondly, we consider the nonlinear model with a power type nonlinearit…
We revisit a construction principle of Fredholm operators using Hilbert complexes of densely defined, closed linear operators and apply this to particular choices of differential operators. The resulting index is then computed with the help of explicitly describing the dimension of the cohomology groups of generalised (`harmonic') Dirichlet and Neumann tensor fields. The main results of this contribution are the computation of the indices of Dirac-type operators associated to the elasticity complex and the newly found biharmonic complex, relevant for the biharmonic equation, elasticity, and fo…
It was shown by the second author in (CPAA, 2019) for the biharmonic Schrödinger equation and most recently by Himonas and Mantzavinos (Nonlinearity, 2020) for 2D Schrödinger equation that Fokas method based formulas are capable of defining weak solutions of associated nonlinear initial boundary value problems (ibvps) below the Banach algebra threshold. In view of these results, we revisit the theory of interior-boundary Strichartz estimates for the Schrödinger equation posed on the right half line, considering both Dirichlet and Neumann cases. Finally, we apply these estimates to obtain low r…
We study boundary value problems for the Laplacian on a domain $Ω$ consisting of the left half of the Sierpinski Gasket ($SG$), whose boundary is essentially a countable set of points $X$. For harmonic functions we give an explicit Poisson integral formula to recover the function from its boundary values, and characterize those that correspond to functions of finite energy. We give an explicit Dirichlet to Neumann map and show that it is invertible. We give an explicit description of the Dirichlet to Neumann spectra of the Laplacian with an exact count of the dimensions of eigenspaces. We comp…
We consider a classical shape optimization problem for the eigenvalues of elliptic operators with homogeneous boundary conditions on domains in the $N$-dimensional Euclidean space. We survey recent results concerning the analytic dependence of the elementary symmetric functions of the eigenvalues upon domain perturbation and the role of balls as critical points of such functions subject to volume constraint. Our discussion concerns Dirichlet and buckling-type problems for polyharmonic operators, the Neumann and the intermediate problems for the biharmonic operator, the Lamé and the Reissner-Mi…
