The generalization of the geometric mean of positive scalars to positive definite matrices has attracted considerable attention since the seminal work of Ando. The paper generalizes this framework of matrix means by proposing the definition of a rank-preserving mean for two or an arbitrary number of positive semi-definite matrices of fixed rank. The proposed mean is shown to be geometric in that it satisfies all the expected properties of a rank-preserving geometric mean. The work is motivated by operations on low-rank approximations of positive definite matrices in high-dimensional spaces.
An algorithm for computing the Karcher mean of $n$ positive definite matrices is proposed, based on the majorization-minimization (MM) principle. The proposed MM algorithm is parameter-free, does not need to choose step sizes, and has a theoretical guarantee of asymptotic linear convergence.
A nonzero nonnegative definite hermitian m by m matrix A has increasing principal minors if the value of each principle minor of A is not less than the value each of its subminors. For $m>1$ we show $A$ has increasing principal minors if and only if $A^{-1}$ exists and its diagonal entries are less or equal to 1.
The thresholding covariance estimator has nice asymptotic properties for estimating sparse large covariance matrices, but it often has negative eigenvalues when used in real data analysis. To simultaneously achieve sparsity and positive definiteness, we develop a positive definite $\ell_1$-penalized covariance estimator for estimating sparse large covariance matrices. An efficient alternating direction method is derived to solve the challenging optimization problem and its convergence properties are established. Under weak regularity conditions, non-asymptotic statistical theory is also establ…
We consider the projected semi-definite and Euclidean distance cones onto a subset of the matrix entries. These two sets are precisely the input data defining feasible semi-definite and Euclidean distance completion problems. We classify when these sets are closed, and use the boundary structure of these two sets to elucidate the Krislock-Wolkowicz facial reduction algorithm. In particular, we show that under a chordality assumption, the "minimal cones" of these problems admit combinatorial characterizations. As a byproduct, we record a striking relationship between the complexity of the gener…
In this work, we generalize the probability simplex constraint to matrices, i.e., $\mathbf{X}_1 + \mathbf{X}_2 + \ldots + \mathbf{X}_K = \mathbf{I}$, where $\mathbf{X}_i \succeq 0$ is a symmetric positive semidefinite matrix of size $n\times n$ for all $i = \{1,\ldots,K \}$. By assuming positive definiteness of the matrices, we show that the constraint set arising from the matrix simplex has the structure of a smooth Riemannian submanifold. We discuss a novel Riemannian geometry for the matrix simplex manifold and show the derivation of first- and second-order optimization related ingredients.
Determinantal polynomials play a crucial role in semidefinite programming problems. Helton-Vinnikov proved that real zero (RZ) bivariate polynomials are determinantal. However, it leads to a challenging problem to compute such a determinantal representation. We provide a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of definite determinantal representation of a bivariate polynomial by identifying its coefficients as scalar products of two vectors where the scalar products are defined by orthostochastic matrices. This alternative condition enables us to develop a method to compute a moni…
It is shown that the polynomial \[p(t) = \text{Tr}[(A+tB)^m]\] has positive coefficients when $m = 6$ and $A$ and $B$ are any two 3-by-3 complex Hermitian positive definite matrices. This case is the first that is not covered by prior, general results. This problem arises from a conjecture raised by Bessis, Moussa and Villani in connection with a long-standing problem in theoretical physics. The full conjecture, as shown recently by Lieb and Seiringer, is equivalent to $p(t)$ having positive coefficients for any $m$ and any two $n$-by-$n$ positive definite matrices. We show that, generally, th…
In this paper, we comparatively analyze the Bures-Wasserstein (BW) geometry with the popular Affine-Invariant (AI) geometry for Riemannian optimization on the symmetric positive definite (SPD) matrix manifold. Our study begins with an observation that the BW metric has a linear dependence on SPD matrices in contrast to the quadratic dependence of the AI metric. We build on this to show that the BW metric is a more suitable and robust choice for several Riemannian optimization problems over ill-conditioned SPD matrices. We show that the BW geometry has a non-negative curvature, which further im…
We have recently presented a method to solve an overdetermined linear system of equations with multiple right hand side vectors, where the unknown matrix is to be symmetric and positive definite. The coefficient and the right hand side matrices are respectively named data and target matrices. A more complicated problem is encountered when the unknown matrix is to be positive semi-definite. The problem arises in estimating the compliance matrix to model deformable structures and approximating correlation and covariance matrices in financial modeling. Several methods have been proposed for solvi…
In this work we study the set of strictly accretive matrices, that is, the set of matrices with positive definite Hermitian part, and show that the set can be interpreted as a smooth manifold. Using the recently proposed symmetric polar decomposition for sectorial matrices, we show that this manifold is diffeomorphic to a direct product of the manifold of (Hermitian) positive definite matrices and the manifold of strictly accretive unitary matrices. Utilizing this decomposition, we introduce a family of Finsler metrics on the manifold and charaterize their geodesics and geodesic distance. Fina…
We consider certain matricial analogues of optimal mass transport of positive definite matrices of equal trace. The framework is motivated by the need to devise a suitable geometry for interpolating positive definite matrices in ways that allow controlling the apparent tradeoff between "aligning up their eigenstructure" and "scaling the corresponding eigenvalues". Indeed, motivation for this work is provided by power spectral analysis of multivariate time series where, linear interpolation between matrix-valued power spectra generates push-pop artifacts. Push-pop of power distribuion is object…
Symplectic eigenvalues are conventionally defined for symmetric positive-definite matrices via Williamson's diagonal form. Many properties of standard eigenvalues, including the trace minimization theorem, are extended to the case of symplectic eigenvalues. In this note, we will generalize Williamson's diagonal form for symmetric positive-definite matrices to the case of symmetric positive-semidefinite matrices, which allows us to define symplectic eigenvalues, and prove the trace minimization theorem in the new setting.
