A new package, DISPred, is described. The package can be used to calculate ep deep inelastic scattering cross sections at Born level in Electroweak theory and at both leading and next-to-leading order in QCD.
We present a new parton level Monte Carlo program for the calculation of jet cross sections in Deep Inelastic Scattering based on Born and next-to-leading order matrix elements. Using a class of invariant jet definition schemes, the program allows for the calculation of differential distributions of jet cross sections in the basic kinematical variables (like s, x, y, W^2, Q^2...) as well as for total jet cross sections. Various kinematical cuts can be chosen from an input file.
We present a brief description of the recently developed Fortran code TERAD91 for semi-analytical calculations of the double differential cross sections of NC and CC deep inelastic electron-proton scattering and of some related observables. The code is mainly intended for the calculations at HERA or other ep-colliders but may be also used for similar processes like muon-proton scattering in fixed-target experiments.
A description of the Fortran program HECTOR for a variety of semi-analytical calculations of radiative QED, QCD, and electroweak corrections to the double-differential cross sections of NC and CC deep inelastic charged lepton proton (or lepton deuteron) scattering is presented. HECTOR originates from the substantially improved and extended earlier programs HELIOS and TERAD91. It is mainly intended for applications at HERA or LEPxLHC, but may be used also for muon scattering in fixed target experiments. The QED corrections may be calculated in different sets of variables: leptonic, hadronic, mi…
Physics and programming aspects are discussed for a Fortran 77 Monte Carlo program to simulate complete events in deep inelastic lepton-nucleon scattering. The parton level interaction is based on the standard model electroweak cross sections, which are fully implemented in leading order for any lepton of arbitrary polarization, and different parametrizations of parton density functions can be used. First order QCD matrix elements for gluon radiation and boson-gluon fusion are implemented and higher order QCD radiation is treated using parton showers. Hadronization is performed using the Lund …
PROJET is a parton level Monte Carlo program for the calculation of jet cross sections in deeply inelastic electron proton scattering. In its present version it contains the Born level diagrams for the production of (1+1), (2+1) and (3+1) jets and the next-to-leading order corrections for the production cross sections of (1+1) and (2+1) jets for all polarisations of the exchanged virtual photon. In particular, the full angular correlations between the lepton and jet momenta are implemented. The program permits the application of acceptance cuts on all external momenta. For this purpose, the pr…
We compare different next-to-leading order calculations of jet cross sections in deep-inelastic scattering as implemented in the programs DISASTER++, DISENT, JETVIP and MEPJET. In all phase space regions under study DISENT and DISASTER++ agree better than 2%. MEPJET shows systematic deviations of being typically 5-8% lower than the other programs. The JETVIP results show a significant dependence on the phase space slicing parameter $y_{\rm cut}$. In the cases where the $y_{\rm cut}$ dependence within $10^{-4} \le y_{\rm cut} \le 10^{-3}$ is smaller than 3% the JETVIP results are often comparab…
We study the sensitivity of the Fermilab Short-Baseline Neutrino (SBN) experiments, MicroBooNE, ICARUS, and SBND, to MeV- to GeV-scale inelastic dark matter interacting through a dark photon mediator. These models provide interesting scenarios of light thermal dark matter, which, while challenging to probe with direct and indirect detection experiments, are amenable to accelerator-based searches. We consider production of the dark sector states with both the Fermilab Booster 8 GeV and NuMI 120 GeV proton beams and study the signatures of scattering and decay of the heavy excited dark state in …
The status of the calculation of next-to-leading-order QCD corrections to hadronic final states in deeply inelastic scattering is reviewed, and an overview of the phenomenology (including the measurement of the strong coupling constant and the gluon density via jet rates) is given. We also describe a new universal program (DISASTER++) for the calculation of (2+1)-jet observables.
A next-to-leading order Monte Carlo program for the calculation of heavy quark cross sections in deeply inelastic scattering is described. Concentrating on charm quark and D^*(2010) production at HERA, several distributions are presented and their variation with respect to charm quark mass, parton distribution set, and renormalization-factorization scale is studied.
The coefficient functions for heavy-flavour production in deeply inelastic electron-hadron scattering have been calculated previously. Analytic expressions are impossible to publish due to their length. Therefore we have tabulated them as two-dimensional arrays as is often done for the scale-dependent parton densities. Using this computer program we present event rates for charm production at HERA in bins of $x$ and $Q^2$. These rates are insensitive to variations in the factorization and renormalization scale $μ$.
The analysis of event shape variables enable studies of QCD and determinations of alpha-s, but require predictions to next-to-leading order. The predictions of two next-to-leading order programs are compared for current jet thrust, current jet-broadening, C parameter and jet-mass in deep inelastic scattering.
The numerical study of QED radiative corrections in the low x region for the H1 experiment at HERA was performed. The analytical program TERAD91 was used to obtain the values of the radiative correction factor for the first measurement of the proton structure function F2(x,Q2) in the range x= 10^{-2} - 10^{-4} and 5 < Q2 < 80 GeV2.
An introduction and summary is given of the main results achieved by working group 1: Structure Functions in Deep Inelastic Scattering at HERA. The prospects were discussed of future measurements of the structure functions $F_{2}, F_{L}, xG_{3}, F_{2}^{Q\overline{Q}}$ and $F_π$ at HERA. The results represent a long term programme of experimentation with high luminosity, different lepton beam charges, proton and deuteron beams, allowing for precision measurements. The theoretical investigations focussed on QED corrections, higher order QCD corrections for different observables, resummation of s…
A new version of a Monte Carlo Program for hadronic multi-particle production is presented. It is based on the two-component Dual Parton Model which includes the dual topological unitarization of soft and hard cross sections. The model treats both soft (low $p_{\perp}$) and hard (minijet, large $p_{\perp}$) processes in a unified and consistent way. The unified description is important at TeV-energies of hadron colliders, where the hard perturbative cross sections of QCD become large and comparable to the total cross sections.
POLDIS is a Monte Carlo program for polarized (semi-inclusive) deep inelastic scattering (DIS). Unpolarized DIS events are generated with the existing lepto-production event generators LEPTO for DIS and AROMA for Heavy Flavor production. The relevant spin asymmetries are computed at partonic level to first order in alpha_s for each generated event, and are then convoluted with the corresponding ratio between the polarized and unpolarized parton distribution functions (i.e. parton polarization). This procedure provides a polarization weight for each event. The average of these polarization weig…
Based on the requirement in the simulation of lepton-nucleus deep inelastic scattering (DIS), we construct a fortran program LDCS 1.0 calculating the differential and total cross sections for the unpolarized charged lepton-unpolarized nucleon and neutrino-unpolarized nucleon neutral current (charged current) DIS at leading order. Any set of the experimentally fitted parton distribution functions could be employed directly. The mass of incident and scattered leptons is taken into account and the boundary conditions calculating the single differential and total cross section are studied. The cal…
We derive semi--analytic expressions for the analytic continuation of the Mellin transforms of the heavy flavor QCD coefficient functions for neutral current deep inelastic scattering in leading and next-to-leading order to complex values of the Mellin variable $N$. These representations are used in Mellin--space QCD evolution programs to provide fast evaluations of the heavy flavor contributions to the structure functions $F_2(x,Q^2), F_L(x,Q^2)$ and $g_1(x,Q^2)$.
Complete next-to leading order QCD predictions for (2+1) jet cross sections and jet rates in deep inelastic scattering (DIS) based on a new parton level Monte Carlo program are presented. All relevant helicity contributions to the total cross section are included. Results on total jet cross sections as well as differential distributions in the basic kinematical variables $x,W^2$ and $Q^2$ are shown for HERA energies and for the fixed target experiment E665 at FERMILAB. We study the dependence on the choices of the renormalization scale $μ_R$ and the factorization scale $μ_F$ and show that the …
We present results on the fourth-order splitting functions and coefficient functions obtained using Forcer, a four-loop generalization of the Mincer program for the parametric reduction of self-energy integrals. We have computed the respective lowest three even-N and odd-N moments for the non-singlet splitting functions and the non-singlet coefficient functions in electromagnetic and nu+nu(bar) charged-current deep-inelastic scattering, and the N=2 and N=4 results for the corresponding flavour-singlet quantities. Enough moments have been obtained for an LLL-based determination of the analytic …
The solution to the BFKL equation grows like a power of center of mass energy, s, violating unitarity conditions at high energies. The growth of the cross section can be tamed by taking into account multiple pomeron exchanges. This is known as saturation and it is expressed in the Balitsky-Kovchegov equation. Conservation of energy should also slow down the growth of the cross section, and our aim in this work is to study the effects of enforcing energy conservation in DIS-events. Using the dipole picture, onium-onium collisions can be viewed, in the large N_c and the leading logarithmic limit…
This is a review of the program we started in 1968 to understand and generalize Bjorken scaling and Feynman's parton model in a canonical quantum field theory. It is shown that the parton model proposed for deep inelastic electron scatterings can be derived if a transverse momentum cutoff is imposed on all particles in the theory so that the impulse approximation holds. The deep inelastic electron-positron annihilation into a nucleon plus anything else is related by the crossing symmetry of quantum field theory to the deep inelastic electron-nucleon scattering. We have investigated the implica…
The problem of electron-proton scattering is handed over both the elastic and inelastic scattering. Two models are presented in this sense. The first, depends on the multi photon exchange ladder diagram, where the transition matrix is expanded in multi steps form. The second model uses the multi peripheral mechanism developed for the electromagnetic field. It allows the particle production in the inelastic scattering processes. An iterative procedure is found and inserted in a Monte Carlo program to reproduce the differential cross section of the reaction. The comparison with the experimental …
The extension of interpolation-grid frameworks for perturbative QCD calculations at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) is presented for deep inelastic scattering (DIS) processes. A fast and flexible evaluation of higher-order predictions for any a posteriori choice of parton distribution functions (PDFs) or value of the strong coupling constant is essential in iterative fitting procedures to extract PDFs and Standard Model parameters as well as for a detailed study of the scale dependence. The APPLfast project, described here, provides a generic interface between the parton-level Monte Carlo…
We present a program to measure the parton densities in the pomeron using diffractive deep inelastic scattering and diffractive photoproduction, and to test the resulting parton densities by applying them to other processes such as the diffractive production of jets in hadron-hadron collisions. Since QCD factorization has been predicted NOT to apply to hard diffractive scattering, this program of fitting and using parton densities might be expected to fail. Its success or failure will provide useful information on the space-time structure of the pomeron.
Atomic nuclei can be used as spatial analyzers of the hadronization process in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering. The study of this process using fully-identified final state hadrons began with the HERMES program in the late 1990s, and is now continuing at Jefferson Lab. In the measurement described here, electrons and positive pions were measured from a 5 GeV electron beam incident on targets of liquid deuterium, C, Fe, and Pb using CLAS in Hall B. The broadening of the transverse momentum of positive pions has been studied in detail as a function of multiple kinematic variables, and i…
JetViP is a computer program for the calculation of inclusive single- and dijet cross sections in eP- and e-gamma-scattering in NLO QCD. The virtuality of the photon, radiated by the incoming electron, can be chosen in a continuous range, reaching from photoproduction into deep inelastic scattering. The various contributions to the full jet cross section, including the resolved photon contributions, are implemented. The calculation is based on the phase-space-slicing method.
The physics, and a design, of a Large Hadron Electron Collider (LHeC) are sketched. With high luminosity, 10^{33}cm^{-2}s^{-1}, and high energy, \sqrt{s}=1.4 TeV, such a collider can be built in which a 70 GeV electron (positron) beam in the LHC tunnel is in collision with one of the LHC hadron beams and which operates simultaneously with the LHC. The LHeC makes possible deep-inelastic lepton-hadron (ep, eD and eA) scattering for momentum transfers Q^2 beyond 10^6 GeV^2 and for Bjorken x down to the 10^{-6}. New sensitivity to the existence of new states of matter, primarily in the lepton-quar…
Light dark sectors in thermal contact with the Standard Model naturally produce the observed relic dark matter abundance and are the targets of a broad experimental search program. A key light dark sector model is the pseudo-Dirac fermion with a dark photon mediator. The dynamics of the fermionic excited states are often neglected. We consider scenarios in which a nontrivial abundance of excited states is produced and their subsequent de-excitation yields interesting electromagnetic signals in direct detection experiments. We study three mechanisms of populating the excited state: a primordial…
A new release of the Monte Carlo program Herwig++ (version 2.3) is now available. This version includes a number of improvements including: the extension of the program to lepton-hadron collisions; the inclusion of several processes accurate at next-to-leading order in the POsitive Weight Hardest Emission Generator (POWHEG) scheme; the inclusion of three-body decays and finite-width effects in Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) physics processes; a new procedure for reconstructing the kinematics of the parton shower based on the colour structure of the hard scattering process; a new model for bar…
SIDIS-RC EvGen is a C++ standalone Monte-Carlo event generator for studies of semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) processes at medium to high lepton beam energies. In particular, the generator contains binary and library components for generating SIDS events and calculating cross sections for unpolarized or longitudinally polarized beam and unpolarized, longitudinally or transversely polarized target. The structure of the generator incorporates transverse momentum-dependent parton distribution and fragmentation functions, whereby we obtain multi-dimensional binned simulation resul…
We compute the ${\cal O}(α^2α_s^2)$ perturbative corrections to inclusive jet production in electron-nucleon collisions. This process is of particular interest to the physics program of a future Electron Ion Collider (EIC). We include all relevant partonic processes, including deep-inelastic scattering contributions, photon-initiated corrections, and parton-parton scattering terms that first appear at this order. Upon integration over the final-state hadronic phase space we validate our results for the deep-inelastic corrections against the known next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) structure …
We briefly describe a new general algorithm for carrying out QCD calculations to next-to-leading order in perturbation theory. The algorithm can be used for computing arbitrary jet cross sections in arbitrary processes and can be straightforwardly implemented in general-purpose Monte Carlo programs. We show numerical results for the specific case of jet cross sections in deep inelastic scattering at HERA energies.

We have implemented in the RAPGAP program a previously derived subtraction method for next-to-leading order (NLO) corrections in Monte-Carlo event generators, and we show results for jet production in deep inelastic scattering. At small x_{bj}, NLO corrections are comparable to the LO cross section, because of the large gluon density. We devise a jet observable that is particularly sensitive to the treatment of parton kinematics, which our method is intended to treat correctly. We compare the results of the calculation with LO calculations and with the previously existing treatment of NLO proc…
Deep Inelastic Scattering would be brought into the unexplored TeV regime by the the proposed Large Hadron Electron Collider at CERN. Its rich physics program, includes both precision Standard Model measurements to complement LHC physics as well as studies of QCD in the high energy limit. The present proceeding reports on studies included in the updated LHeC Conceptual Design Report. We study the impact of LHeC simulated data on Parton Distribution Functions uncertainties. We also assess the LHeC potential to allow the determination of the strong coupling constant $α_{S}$, at per-mille level a…
Close to one half of the LHC events are expected to be due to elastic or inelastic diffractive scattering. Still, predictions based on extrapolations of experimental data at lower energies differ by large factors in estimating the relative rate of diffractive event categories at the LHC energies. By identifying diffractive events, detailed studies on proton structure can be carried out. The combined forward physics objects: rapidity gaps, forward multiplicity and transverse energy flows can be used to efficiently classify proton-proton collisions. Data samples recorded by the forward detectors…

New and more precise measurements of neutrino cross sections have renewed the interest in a better understanding of electroweak interactions on nucleons and nuclei. This effort is crucial to achieve the precision goals of the neutrino oscillation program, making new discoveries, like the CP violation in the leptonic sector, possible. We review the recent progress in the physics of neutrino cross sections, putting emphasis on the open questions that arise in the comparison with new experimental data. Following an overview of recent neutrino experiments and future plans, we present some details …
