Localization of solitons: linear response of the mean-field ground state to weak external potentials

Two aspects of bright matter-wave solitons in weak external potentials are discussed. First, we briefly review recent results on the Anderson localization of an entire soliton in disordered potentials [Sacha et al. PRL 103, 210402 (2009)], as a paradigmatic showcase of genuine quantum dynamics beyond simple perturbation theory. Second, we calculate the linear response of the mean-field soliton shape to a weak, but otherwise arbitrary external potential, with a detailed application to lattice potentials.

Breakdown of Anderson localization of interacting quantum bright solitons in a disorder potential

The center of mass of a bright soliton in a Bose-Einstein condensate may reveal Anderson localization in the presence of a weak disorder potential. We analyze the effects of interactions between two bright solitons on the Anderson localization phenomenon. Perturbation calculus shows that even very weak interactions modify localization properties of the system eigenstates. For stronger interactions, i.e. when the solitons are close to each other, the localization is totally broken. Anderson localization of solitons

At low temperature, a quasi-one-dimensional ensemble of atoms with attractive interaction forms a bright soliton. When exposed to a weak and smooth external potential, the shape of the soliton is hardly modified, but its center-of-mass motion is affected. We show that in a spatially correlated disordered potential, the quantum motion of a bright soliton displays Anderson localization. The localization length can be much larger than the soliton size and could be observed experimentally.

Soliton localization in Bose-Einstein condensates with time-dependent harmonic potential and scattering length

We derive exact solitonic solutions of a class of Gross-Pitaevskii equations with time-dependent harmonic trapping potential and interatomic interaction. We find families of exact single-solitonic, multi-solitonic, and solitary wave solutions. We show that, with the special case of an oscillating trapping potential and interatomic interaction, a soliton can be localized indefinitely at an arbitrary position. The localization is shown to be experimentally possible for sufficiently long time even with only an oscillating trapping potential and a constant interatomic interaction.

Quantum bright soliton in a disorder potential

Emergence of Calogero family of models in external potentials: Duality, Solitons and Hydrodynamics

We present a first-order formulation of the Calogero model in external potentials in terms of a generating function, which simplifies the derivation of its dual form. Solitons naturally appear in this formulation as particles of negative mass. Using this method, we obtain the dual form of Calogero particles in external quartic, trigonometric and hyperbolic potentials, which were known to be integrable but had no known dual formulation. Dark soliton in a disorder potential

We consider dark soliton in a Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of a weak disorder potential. Deformation of the soliton shape is analyzed within the Bogoliubov approach and by employing expansion in eigenstates of the Pöschl-Teller Hamiltonian. Comparison of the results with the numerical simulations indicates that the linear response analysis reveals good agreement even if the strength of the disorder is of the order of the chemical potential of the system. Stabilization of solitons under competing nonlinearities by external potentials

We report results of the analysis for families of one-dimensional (1D) trapped solitons, created by competing self-focusing (SF) quintic and self-defocusing (SDF) cubic nonlinear terms. Stabilization of ring dark solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates

Earlier work has shown that ring dark solitons in two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate are generically unstable. In this work, we propose a way of stabilizing the ring dark soliton via a radial Gaussian external potential. We investigate the existence and stability of the ring dark soliton upon variations of the chemical potential and also of the strength of the radial potential. Self-trapping of excitations: Two-dimensional quasiparticle solitons in an extended Bose-Hubbard dimer array

Considering a two-dimensional Bose-Hubbard spinor lattice with weak nearest neighbour interactions and no particle transfer between sites, we theoretically study the transport of energy from one initially excited dimer, to the rest of the lattice. Many-body localization in a quantum gas with long-range interactions and linear external potential

We study theoretically transitions between the localized and chaotic many-body regimes in one-dimensional quantum lattice systems with long-range couplings between particles and linear external potential.
